how to a nandroid a stock device - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I want to oden the EL29 stock version with root without the data being overwritten. However before i do that I would like to nandroid backup my current configuration in case that goes wrong? how do i do that? I dont what to flash a bad kernal that causes the exclamation point.
I assume that i might need to use auto-root + cwm on my EK stock version to get the nandroid backup. Then after that flash the rooted stock EL29 rom?

Root your existing (assuming EK02 or before) using Auto Root Option A.
Then use Auto Root Option C to install CWM.
Then reboot to recovery and make your CWM/Nandroid backup.
If you already rooted, skip the first step.

thanks! Im going to try and flash the no-data version of EL29, but i want to backup all my data incase something goes wrong.

That's the right way to do things. Not that anything is expected to go wrong, but just be safe.

thanks for the quick comments. Everything worked well. Going to run stock root for a few days before loading EL29

[Q] Clockwork Recovery Question On Stock Rom

Hey, this may seem like a silly question but i would rather ask it than brick my device.
I have rooted and s-off my stock rom, i have installed all my apps and settings and ive got it just the way i like it. i have created a nandroid backup using clockwork mod.
I now want to try Gingervillian rom, ive got titanium backup to install all the apps back and that but what i want to know is:
Will i be able to restore my stock rom from the nandroid backup with all my apps and setting in tact, even though s-off is set and its rooted. i know a read somewhere that flashing a stock rom on a phone with s-off can semi-brick it... so will clockwork recovery do the same?
When you make a 'nandroid' backup via ROM manager/CWM Recovery, it makes essentially a carbon copy of the current setup of your ROM (not your radio, S-Off status, etc.). Literally everything is perfectly as you have it now. It just like doing a full HDD backup of your computer.
When you restore this backup, it simply brings back your ROM from exactly how it was. There is no effect on your root or S-off, or your radio.
So, if you do a nandroid backup, then wipe the device and flash another ROM i.e. Gingervillain, and make a nandroid of that, you can then freely switch back and forth between the 2 (or more) recoveries via ROM manager/CWM Recovery, with no issues.
The issues with bricking as you're referring to are if you for some reason try to somehow flash a non-rooted ROM, which would most definitely cause issues. In order to get back your phone to stock-stock-stock-stock (unroot and S-on), you will need to follow unroot instructions and flash an official unrooted RUU/PC10IMG.zip to get back to everything as it came out of the box.
Hope this helps, let me know if I need to clarify.
thank you very much matey much appreciated!!

[Q] Nandroid Backup?

Is it possible to have a rooted device, use nandroid to make a backup, revert to stock/unroot, and then restore data from that backup? Can you even use the backup after you unroot?
never tried that - although I do not see why not
odin back to factory reset
you will need to odin clockwork recovery as stock recovery will not work
three finger startup to Clockwork
then go to restore - advanced - pick the file and restore data only
I just learned about advanced restore recently but have not done what you ask
If it does not work you can restore to where you were with no harm done
remember that titanium backup only works with root access.
If you're stock then you won't have the recovery needed to do a restore from the nand backup.
Yes, you would have to have clockwork recovery installed also though. Then just odin back to one of the stock images. Then later re root and reinstall clockwork and restore back up.
If you are talking about EI22 and want to keep CWM as a recovery to be able to restore said backup then you will need a custom kernel anyway so that the stock recovery doesn't keep overwriting CWM. What is the reason why you want to do this?

I screwed up my phone a while back with the crappy samsung cable that comes with it. Ever since it has been slower and my pc won't recognize it no matter what I do. So I bought a new cable and I wanted to revert to stock to try and start over with the rooting and custom rom process, but I didn't want to lose all my contacts, apps, music, etc. in the process.

OK. once you root again and have CWM back on you will be able to restore everything. So Odin away to EC05 stock, one-click root, flash a GB ROM and restore your data.
Well you should always be saving your contacts to your google account, then when you sign back in it will just use your account to reload your contacts. Your music is saved to SD, so when yiou open any new music program it should search your SD and find the music. Likeness previous posts, the issue your going to have doing this is not having a custom recovery...you wont be able to restore a nand with stock recovery. I agree with previous posts, it sucks you'll lose data, but the most functional and clean way to do this would be to Odin to EC05, use the EC05 to EI22 modem zip in the development section, and flash your custom rom and kernel. If you are concerned with performance and lag, see Universeral Adrenaline Shot and Supercharger script...good Luck!

[Q] Can you Nandroid ICS using AGAT's?

I was wondering if I can Nandroid my current ICS setup using AGAT's? Whenever i backup using the EL26 Kernel, I have to go back to 1.85 odin, and Flash an ICS Kernel. This also adds the yellow triangle (ugh). I use mobile odin to flash my ICS Kernels. But when i restore using th EL26 Method, It requires me PC odin'ing a ICS Kernel. I learned my lesson hard bricking messing around a few days ago. I seemed to have no Problems Flashing multiple ICS roms with AGAT's recovery using the regular method (which was not how i bricked), And i even restored flawlessly a backed up setup without having to use Odin to flash a ICS tar since it can't boot without one. Anyone have a more convenient way? Or can i just use AGAT's to backup and restore my ICS roms?
Yes, the AGAT Recovery supports nandroid backup and restore.
Done it a few times going back to his earlier repacks. With the additional safety he has built in with the help of Chirs41g and sfhub I think they are very safe.
I actually create a nandroid close to every day to copy to my PC. Keep trying a few other ROMs; wiping flashing checking them out etc., but come back to Agat's work (via nandoids) because, for me anyways, everything works. And works very well.

Coming from E3D... Questions!

I know a lot of people are coming from the EVO 3D...
Anyway i have a few question becuase im reading stuff about flashing issues...
I was about to flash a ICS ROM(Paranoid or CM9) and i read that i have to be carefull beacuse if i want to go back Nandroids will not work?
Well how do i make a Nandroid that works? I read that the only way to go back is flashing Stock via Odin(Im i wrong?)
I just finish the rooting process and im ready to install ICS ROM.
In the evo way, only thing i need it to do was nandroid, wipe, install from zip, DONE.
Thanks guys!

Basically make a nandroid with GB recovery the flash ics. If you want to restore Odin GB rom then nandroid restore.
Every rom should have instructions and as long as they are followed you should be safe.
Look up sfhub (I think) and agats custom recovery threads for more info.
Happy independence day!

Nandroids are perfectly safe, the only time when they're not safe, is when you make/restore from one on ICS.
The problem with all these ICS leaks, is a bug plaguing the emmc, which I believe that some methods of using ICS recoveries makes it wipe or something. Point is, it causes a brick. Here is the method that I use when flashing ICS, which works for most ICS ROMs, as most ICS ROMs need an EL26/EL29 framework. Pretty sure Paranoidandroid recommends this method, too.
Download these drivers
Download this: OC ODIN File for EL26 and this: E4GT Root Utility
Using Titanium Backup, make a backup of all your stuff, or use your preferred back-upper, just not nandroid. I recommend buying the Pro version, because it will save you so many times, and the dev is great. It's a little expensive though for an app.
OC Odin back to EL26. The good thing about this is, the process is straight forward, and doesn't add to your flash counter, and does not yellow triangle either.
Open up e4gtauto-sfx.exe, option C, then I. This gives you CWM, And just in case, I do not recommend using other than standard CWM to flash ICS roms. but that's me.
When your phone reboots, it should have CWM, and be rooted, just load up the flashing files onto your sd card, load up CWM, do 1 system data wipe, and flash the files in the order they have to be flashed.
Also, really important, DO NOT DIRECTLY RESTORE FROM A NANDROID You will most likely cause a brick if you do.
If you want to go back to GB, you have to Odin back to GB, and THEN you can perform the Nandroid Restore.

For OC ODIN, you don't have to worry about flashing, just plug your phone into the computer once you have the program running, an the drivers, and you'll be fine.
And yeah, you can go back using ODIN.
You just shouldn't use CWM to flash an older version of something if you're on the newer version.
So if install ICS and I want to return to GB the safe thing to do is run Odin back to stock rooted then Nandroid Restore?

Best way to unroot and restore to stock to get OTA updates?

I finally figured out how to root my phone (thank Sithis)
I just flashed TWRP and SuperSU. Sadly I was only able to recover a handful of photos from my whack phone factory resetting itself. (my only reasoning for rooting, to use data recovery. I only found DiskDigger. didn't do that great sadly)
I think I MIGHT have picked up some sort of malware or virus; not entirely positive but since rooting, my phones camera flash randomly goes off as if something is taking pictures. I have GO Security and 360 Security downloaded and it didn't find anything. I don't know how thorough those apps are but hopefully they would have picked up any malicious thing invading my phone.
I know there is an unrooting option through the SuperSU app. Again, I don't know how "complete" of an unrooting that'd be.
I honestly wish I had the links I used to download TWRP and SuperSU. Maybe to see if anyone could figure out if they were legit.
I want to unroot, then factory reset. Would I have to flash a stock ROM before hitting the 'unroot' button? How would all this work? Anyone figure out how to get OTA updates after a complete unroot?
If anyone could point me in the correct direction I'd be thankful. I just don't want to deal with the security risks of a rooted phone and would like it back to stock. If I could do that without flashing a ROM to my phone that'd be great.
Since I couldn't find anything of the sorts for my N910PVPS4DPE2.
[edit: please delete post and redirect me if already asked and solved (within 2016)]
You could press that un-root button now but most likely you cannot take the next OTA without flashing the stock tar in Odin. Modifying some partitions will break OTA updates. Having custom recovery won't work.
I don't think it's ever been established as fact but in theory, you could root a stock phone with Chainfire's CF AutoRoot for Note 4 in Odin. Leaving as that root installer rooted, you could un-root later for OTA update within SuperSU application. It would prompt you to restore both kernel and recovery with the original stock ones and then reboot. *But* if Samsung flags modified read only partitions as being modified, even if modified temporarily, OTA would still be denied for modified status trip. Dunno if anyone has confirmed the theory on our phone or not.
To answer your question, I think you'll have to flash the stock tar in Odin to restore your OTA capability. I would recommend you press the full un-root. You can restore the original kernel, if it was stock, at prompt. But most likely you cannot restore the original recovery if flashed manually. You'll need to flash the stock tar again to both restore read only partitions and stock recovery. If you forget to to perform full un-root, I think factory reset will be enough to clear root and remnants with a stock tar flash. (Stock tar flash should wipe internal memory but to be sure, you could wipe that too).
It's up to you, you could wait until the next OTA to flash the stock tar.
For your camera issue, it might just be enough to factory reset for now.
Have you considered Titanium Backup to backup and restore applications? A lot of rooted users use that. I'm not sure copying and restoring a disk would mesh with Android package id used to link data to original application with proper linking and ownership. I do know that Titanium Backup complies with that. If the package id gets skewed, restoring data may not work as expected. Something to check or confirm beforehand. Just a suggestion.

Thanks for the reply man!
Looking over it, it seems like a true hassle to go through finding the stock ROM for my phone and unrooting and that whole process. I think I'll stick with the root for now. I have a couple more questions if you don't mind:
1) If I kept root, could I perform a factory reset without it screwing up the root? I think there's a 'factory reset' option when I boot into TWRP. I would just like to know if it'd remove TWRP/SuperSU. I have heard a lot about Titanium Backup so I will be giving that a try before doing so!
2) Any chance you'd know if when the new OTA comes out, they will have it flashable for my N910PVPS4DPE2? I'm relatively new to all of this and I know if I flashed something not meant for my exact device; I might as well slap some cement on my new Brick Note 4. I've never seen any ROMs/Mods that say 'For N910PVPS4DPE2' specifically. Maybe I'm being overly cautious and don't have all the new lingo down. So, are there ROMs and mods for my phone that I'm just completely overlooking?
Thanks again for helpin a newbie out!
Stock tars are here:

A stock ROM with system based root that isn't easily wiped or lost is here:

I believe factory reset still un-roots systemless root. There was a script that you may have been prompted to install to keep root but I'm not familiar with its retention capability because I use and prefer system based root in the ROM above. You can factory reset the ROM above without losing root.
You would need root for titanium backup. I would recommend factory reset and install the beta 3 ROM. You may not like the missing voicemail app. I use the long press of 1 key in dialer for voicemail. You could just save the apk and install with apk installer by tapping its file with root browser or MyFiles and install. But extract or copy and paste with root browser from current ROM.
OTA's can be expected nearly monthly now. Tars release a bit behind the OTA.
