Well I recently bought a S2 with t-mobile, and just recently it received a OTA upgrade in December. I didn't install it until January, and it looked like everything went fine.
Until it rebooted at stayed on the white screen stating software update
installing and it never moved... Has anyone experienced anything similar?
Re-install Packages
Haven't seen the stock bootloader in a while but there should be an option to re-install packages. Do this.... If it doesnt work then we need to get you into download mode and have you try to use odin.
1. Turn off the device. Pull the Battery. Reinstall Battery.
2. Press and hold both Volume Up and Volume Down keys at the same time.
3. Press the Power key only until the phone vibrates once, then release only the Power key.
4. Continue to hold the Volume up and Volume Down keys until the Android System Recovery screen appears.
5. Press the Volume Down key to highlight Re-install packages(if it is there)
6. Press the Home key to select.
7. Press the Volume Down key to highlight Yes
If there is not a re-install packages try a data/factory reset and see what that does. If nothing, you are trying odin
don't worry, it isn't a brick, follow the instructions above. I think i fixed my friend's phone by simply flashing cwm, I was going to flash a rom... but that did the trick.. but each phone is different.

If you meant only download mode, then you should be able to flash stock with Odin.
If you meant or download mode, then you're probably bricked.
Was it a kernel for t989? Shouldn't be bricked if it was. If it was accidentally another phones kernel...then you're in trouble.

I flashed the wrong rom on my sgh-t989 and bricked it . I found Mobiletechvideos JTagging service, took the chance and sent my phone and 50 dollars , had it back in just about a week working like new . Very nice people and did exactly what they offered.
When I hard bricked my SGSII last month, I too went the MobileTechVideos route. Folks on the forum highly recommended their services, so I purchased their JTAG service and sent them my phone. I was not impressed. They had it for a week (which I'd expected), shipped it back to me uninsured in a padded envelope, and didn't tell me why my phone hadn't been fixed until after I'd received it--and only then because I asked why it wasn't fixed.
At least I received a refund.

So I managed to Brick my sprint version of the galaxy s3. Like an idiot I overlooked a rom and used the i9300 version instead of my model version(nood move). Anyway I can't turn my phone on AT ALL!! I tried putting in into download and recovery and I get nothing. How do i fix this?? Anyone???
If u can't get download mode or recovery than there is no help. Maybe a jig if u have one but I'm not sure if they even work for the s3.

I thought I hard brick my sons phone and here is what I did: Worth a try at this point.
Take battery out and do NOT put it back in. Take SD card out. Plug phone into computer and attempt download mode. Mine booted right up with this method when it wouldn't with anything else. If it does flash the stock rom through Odin right away and you are good to go.

I just tried that and no luck. sounds like u soft bricked it. I can't get it to turn on period. The only thing that turns on is the lcd light but only for 10 seconds then shuts off. Thanks for the help though!

Do you get a screen at all? You say you're softbricked but you also say it doesnt start up. If you are really just softbricked then you have a screen too, in which case you'll just look like an ass going to sprint because they will see you fuucked with it and laugh you out the store. If you are hardbricked then you would have just a black screen. If you have a screen, do some reading like you shouldve done in the first place and fix it yourself.

Mine was hard bricked and it couldn't be turned on period. If yours is soft brick then you should be able to get it back into download mode but you can't get it to turn on at all, then you have a hard brick. I went to sprint and got a brand new one because they couldn't fix it either. So unless they can fix it you will have to get a new one!
Also Hard Bricked.

[JellyBombed S3 via XDA premium]
This morning while on the phone walking into work, my device suddenly dropped the call, and when I looked at it the screen was black, the samsung logo came up, and the Darkside splash screen appeared. The bar under the splash screen filled about maybe 1/4 of the way, before my phone began to go into an infinite boot loop. The only way for me to end the bootloop is to pull the battery out.
I've tried going into recovery mode, to no avail. I've also tried download mode... I can get to the point where I am asked if i want to continue on to download mode, or if I want to cancel. Once I select continue, it LOOKS as if i'm going to be able to get into download mode, but as soon as the Android logo appears, the screen quickly flashes blue, and the phone reverts to an endless boot loop.
I'm on TDJ's Darkside ICS 4.0.3, with the Venom 3 Kernel for TW (I've been using this all summer with no problems).
1) What would cause this sudden boot loop? The most recent app I added was Uno. I was also using the CPU Sleep app, but I only enable that when I know i'm not going to be near a charger. It was not enabled at the time that my device began boot looping.
2) Most importantly, HOW DO I FIX THIS? while I am uncertain of which type of brick this is, I am doubtful that it's a hard brick because I can still turn the device on, and get partially into download mode. From what I understand, a hard brick is one in which there is no power getting to the device, and not even the samsung splash appears.
I would GREATLY appreciate any and all help.
Go on internet and download unbrick sg2 tool. This might help since you cant get into recovery or download. As long as the computer recognizes your phone with USB connection you should be able to fix it. You could also try adb command in command prompt type in adb devices if numbers come up then adb will work with this command : adb reboot recovery.

This.
You're about the 4th person this has happened to in the past week. My phone is currently at MobileTechVideos having the power button replaced. It's $35 for the power button repair service. It's pretty much your only option that I have been able to determine - since it's a hardware issue, there is no "software" fix. I would not try flashing anything to the phone because it could randomly reboot in the middle of a flash; not good.

Since I was able to get int download mode, what i ended up doing was flashing CWM Touch Recovery, as it seemed that each time i used the volume or power keys the device would restart. I'm backup up now. I will probably unroot, wipe the device, go back to stock and take it to the tmo store in the morning. Being that it's a hardware issue, and I'm still under warranty, I should be able to get a warranty exchange. it sucks that I lose my ghost armor screen protector, though.

Hello everyone.
I have tried searching a few threads but i have not found the right info i needed. Here is my story. I am also sorry i am new to Android so i have no knowledge of what Rooting & such is.
I bought a S3 from someone on Kijiji. The phone worked fine & he told me he JUST unlocked the device. I said alright & went ahead & bought the phone from him. I came home & looked at the device. The Device Status said " Modified" What does that mean?. I started downloading apps & a app called "SuperUser" wanted permissions to some apps i downloaded. So searched & found it it was rooted because of that app.
After that i downloaded " Rom Manager" seeing as a few people told me to do it to check if it has been trully rooted. ( Bad idea). I did the Factory reset from there & boom the phone just shut off & never came back alive. Did all the reset that everyone said & nothing. Computer wont even see its on or anything. Odin wont show anything either " Thinking he may have rooted it" I tried charging it & nothing. I tried the Vol down, power & home button but nothing will show up. Black screen. When i take the battery out & plug the phone on the charger the red LED comes on but comes off after a few seconds.
Seeing as it may be hardbricked, i contacted Rogers & they are sending me out a replacement S3 for $35. The thing is i want to ask you guys, will they see if it has been truly rooted & such? Rogers tech support agent told me they send it to Samsung & they deal with it & if they see its been rooted i will be charged around $600 for the refurbished device they are sending me. The phone was warranty until Sept 13, 2013.
So all in all, what does "Modified" On the device status mean & will Samsung see if it has been rooted if the phone won't even power on or anything at all? I am just worried that i will have to pay $600 fee for the refurb device.
Thank you for you time & i am sorry if this has been answered somewhere.
Bump for any help. Thanks

What exactly did you do in Rom Manager? Did you flash a recovery from there and say choose the wrong recovery? If so you hard bricked it for sure cause it will have written the recovery to the wrong partition (most likely the bootloader partition). If you did not do that, then need exact info on what you did inside Rom Manager.
MODIFIED on the status only means its rooted, thats all, nothing bad.
Dixit

BTW to answer your other question, Samsung will probably not be able to tell it was rooted since from your description you clearly hard bricked it to the point where the bootloader was wiped. So Samsung would have to re-write that bootloader which takes JTAG work for them to find out your phone was rooted, I doubt they will do that, plenty of others have been in your situation and Samsung as replaced it without a problem. I dont think their service dept goes to the level of JTAG'ing a device to check if it rooted or check what happened.
Hello Dixit & thank you for the reply.
I opened up Rom Manager & pressed the " Reboot into Recovery" Once i pressed that, the phone just shut off & never came back alive ever again. The person that sold me it STILL says he never rooted the phone. Of course we all know why but anyways. I did all the power trickes like holding down the Vol down, Home & power button & nothing comes up at all.
Before all this happened i did see the Status saying " Modified" That is why i asked about it. Rogers techs told me that Samsung will try & force the phone to wake up or force the software back into the phone. They told me if Samsung find out its been rooted, it will cost $600 for me to pay for the refurb device. Funny thing is Refurb S3 from Telus is at $349.99 yet Rogers claims Samsung will charge $600 for it..
Anyways i am a bit worried as well.

Holding Volume Down + Home + Power won't boot it into Download Mode at all? If it's a firmware issue you'd just need to get to download mode to reflash via ODIN.

They told me if Samsung find out its been rooted, it will cost $600 for me to pay for the refurb device. Funny thing is Refurb S3 from Telus is at $349.99 yet Rogers claims Samsung will charge $600 for it..
Anyways i am a bit worried as well.

Well first off what the previous owner did isnt harmful as it was just rooted and was working fine when you got it. You can easily unroot and clear everything including putting it back to original stock recovery in about 30mins.
Now on your issue, I dont know if Rom Manager attempted to flash a recovery or not, normally just hitting the Reboot into Recovery basically issues a ADB Recovery command that just tells the phone to boot into recovery, that is not harmful in anyway. Looks more like the RomManager flashed a recovery and did so by flashing something that is not for the GS3 which then wiped the bootloader partition and basically hard bricked it.
If you too scared to send it to Samsung, then pay the $50 some dollars it costs to have the JTAG service done by MobiletechVideos

Nope wont help here, the bootloader partition looks like it got wiped out, nothing you can do except JTAG it at this point. If the SAMSUNG doesnt come up or the phone dont vibrate its toast. I had the same issue happen, same results of how just the LED comes on for 5secs and then goes off. Computer wont see anything except QUSB_DLOAD on the Device Manager. Meaning it would only work if someone had the QPST tool files to revive it but to date no one has those files or information.

Ouch.. that's rough..
I was hoping for his sake it was something much simpler.. lol
You should be able to force the phone into download mode with a Jig. Before you do that, I'd recommend doing some research to figure out what you need to do to properly re-image the phone.
And this is why those new to android should really do their research before modding their devices...I suggest every new android user read up on ADB and get that properly setup on their PC...ADB is very handy!!!! I have never once used an app to flash a recovery for a phone as choosing the wrong one can wipe bootlader partitions as seems to be the case here...I use either fast boot or ADB..using this I can double check to make sure I have selected the correct recovery and that it will flash to the proper partition...to the OP chances are Samsung won't go far as performing a JTAG in which case they won't see the phone is rooted and will just send you out a new phone...if you'd rather not deal with Samsung get in touch with mobiletechvideos and pay for the JTAG as another user has recommended.. its actually a great service as it makes your device essentially brick proof after the JTAG mod.

Thank you everyone for your help. The guy would owned it first still denies he did anything to it. I am waitinf for Rogers to send me a refurb S3 and I'm sending my back to them.
Also I never knew what to do with ROM MANAGER. I am new to thi stuff and I am sorry I did not read all about this before. I was to happy enjoying the phone and all.... I won't be rooting my other one seeing as I do NOT know how to root and such. I do not want to ruin this one. Also when I went into Rom Mer I pressed " reboot to recovery" that's how the phone stopped working. I have no idea what the other person did on it.

Btw whether he did anything to it or not, it's not his fault that your phone bricked. There's nothing he could've done that would brick your phone just by going into recovery.

I fully understand that BUT he could have been honest by saying that he did root it. He knew I never knew anything about rooting and such. So he never admitted he did. Oh well. Lesson learned. Never believe anyone.

Odin a stock rogers firmware thats all you gotta do bud it would unroot your device and allow you to get past that screen. and then you can reroot if you want to
it seems that my friend has bricked his phone by installing a verizon boot loader in a at&t gs3 i tried going into recovery and download but nothing the phone wont boot or anything seems to be dead.
question is is there any way to fix it I tried many methods but all failed ):
Why would he install a verizon bootloader? He might have to get a jtag service to fix it. Bummer

Jtag once i was having same issue with my brothers phone tried tiresly but no go

1) Charge battery & phone for an hour.
2) Pull battery for five minutes
3) Put battery back in
4) Press and hold VolumeDown+Power+Home
If that doesn't get you ANY display at all, not even a splash screen, then it's a "hard brick" and he'll need to send his phone out for "JTAG" repair. They are available on eBay for ~$50.
If you do get display, then come back and let us know for the next step (odin).
Some people think the phone is bootloader Locked. When they see that verizon version has bootloader unlock, they flash that.
I almost made that mistake, but I read and re-read everything for a week before even downloading stuff to try

Deoxlea...... WHAT.... HOW DARE YOU..... You mean you READ stickies? What are you trying to do. Set a good example?
My only option for the phone to start working is a jtag or a usb jig. I I ordered a usb jig and will report back if it fixes my phone
I have a jig from my old captivate that has worked both times I've tried to get into download.
Hi, I flashed a custom ROM with CWM.
I have flashed multiple ROMs before with no issues.
However, when I flashed CleanROM ACE for Galaxy Note 2 SGH-i317m, this time it has a boot loop issue.
It shows the samsung logo and it would not proceed.
The most troublesome thing is that I cannot get into download OR recovery mode because it stalls at the Samsung screen..
I would really really appreciate someone's help....
Thanks,

Are you on the Canadian carrier? if you are using the CR 4.2 it will go into a bootloop. But scrosler updated it to 4.2.5, which fixes the bootloop.

I really hope it isn't a hardbrick.. especially because I still see the samsung logo, it's just that the phone can't kick itself out of the boot screen..
I am going to try to use a usb jig and see if it'll force my phone into download mode..
Did you pull the battery and then put it back in and hold volume up, home, and tgen power to get ya into recovery? If ya get into recovery factory reset
Your not hardbricked calm down

Thanks for the suggestion, but as I mentioned in the original message, it does not let me get to recovery mode. When I try to get into recovery mode, it stalls at a samsung boot screen.
Same kind of issue with download mode and normal mode
Have you tried that battery pull? Ive been there many many times your not hard bricked . Hardbricked is no sign of life

Doesn't sound hard bricked. Try multiple times the home button/power/volume up till it comes up. It doesn't always work with mine either. With the S3 you can only hold them down for a few seconds then let go. If you hold them too long it will just reboot the phone again.
Certainly doesn't sound like a boot loop. There's still hope!

Yes I tried doing the battery pull a couple of times. I even tried leaving the battery out for up to an hour, but still no fix.
I always press down on the home button and the volume up key before pressing the power button to avoid the chance of turning on the phone without getting into recovery mode. (same with download mode)
I plan on getting some 300Kohm resistors tomorrow so I can try USB jig, but if there are any other things I can try before then, please let me know.
Thanks!
I think I always push volume up then home then power and when it shows samsung release all and let it do its thing it may have to be in that order

Exynos I have seen hard brick and still show start up screen. I read an article that about that that after it happen to my freind he still has the ohome and its still like that. The jig may "trick" it into recovery. His issue building from source his firsr rom he had heap so low it wouldnt even boot past screen and not enough heap to get to recovery. You jig may work . Dont leave it in too long . Just my opinion. Im a noob to android lol.
I read that too . No need to go into detail I'm not one to argue. Just keep trying bro I hate it for you. Just keep trying until it gives in good luck. Ill try to find that article again. Cyanogenmod had alot of write ups those exynos are different ball game than your usually hard brick thats the reason I said that in first post. Im not saying they did the write up it just seems like they did. Im no expert though

OMG I might have just saved my phone!
Thanks for nailing that thought into my mind tyshemi!
Whenever my phone stalled at the boot screen, I always tried just pressing the power button to reboot, or just take the battery out.
One thing I didn't think of doing was pressing the volume up key, home key and the power button WHEN I already was at the stalled screen!
I managed to get it into download mode and I was able to unbrick the phone via Odin!
Thank you so much tyshemi!!
