NOOOOOOOO I THINK IM BRICKED... Just cant tell if soft or hard. HELP PLEASE!!! - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

This morning while on the phone walking into work, my device suddenly dropped the call, and when I looked at it the screen was black, the samsung logo came up, and the Darkside splash screen appeared. The bar under the splash screen filled about maybe 1/4 of the way, before my phone began to go into an infinite boot loop. The only way for me to end the bootloop is to pull the battery out.
I've tried going into recovery mode, to no avail. I've also tried download mode... I can get to the point where I am asked if i want to continue on to download mode, or if I want to cancel. Once I select continue, it LOOKS as if i'm going to be able to get into download mode, but as soon as the Android logo appears, the screen quickly flashes blue, and the phone reverts to an endless boot loop.
I'm on TDJ's Darkside ICS 4.0.3, with the Venom 3 Kernel for TW (I've been using this all summer with no problems).
1) What would cause this sudden boot loop? The most recent app I added was Uno. I was also using the CPU Sleep app, but I only enable that when I know i'm not going to be near a charger. It was not enabled at the time that my device began boot looping.
2) Most importantly, HOW DO I FIX THIS? while I am uncertain of which type of brick this is, I am doubtful that it's a hard brick because I can still turn the device on, and get partially into download mode. From what I understand, a hard brick is one in which there is no power getting to the device, and not even the samsung splash appears.
I would GREATLY appreciate any and all help.

Go on internet and download unbrick sg2 tool. This might help since you cant get into recovery or download. As long as the computer recognizes your phone with USB connection you should be able to fix it. You could also try adb command in command prompt type in adb devices if numbers come up then adb will work with this command : adb reboot recovery.

also, is the "unbrick sg2 tool" the name of the program, or is it something else? doing a quick google search, i have not found any specific tool, just a bunch of forums and threads describing similar problems.
Thanks

Sounds like you have a sticky power button. Its a common problem with our device. I know mobiletechvideos.com fixes it but for a price

I am reluctant to concede that this is simply a sticky power button. How would this happen?

try to see if this works. just make sure you have the drivers for the phone installed first if not it won't work. the recovery zip will only reboot phone into recovery for you it does nothing else the rest is up to you.

This.
You're about the 4th person this has happened to in the past week. My phone is currently at MobileTechVideos having the power button replaced. It's $35 for the power button repair service. It's pretty much your only option that I have been able to determine - since it's a hardware issue, there is no "software" fix. I would not try flashing anything to the phone because it could randomly reboot in the middle of a flash; not good.

This is insane.
So i took the screws out in the back of the device, swabbed the general area with some denatured alcohol, and now i can get into recovery mode.
unbelievable. I'm attempting to do a backup, but literally halfway through, it bootloops.
This is amazing. I'm determined to backup before i ship it off.

Maybe you can trade with this guy:

Since I was able to get int download mode, what i ended up doing was flashing CWM Touch Recovery, as it seemed that each time i used the volume or power keys the device would restart. I'm backup up now. I will probably unroot, wipe the device, go back to stock and take it to the tmo store in the morning. Being that it's a hardware issue, and I'm still under warranty, I should be able to get a warranty exchange. it sucks that I lose my ghost armor screen protector, though.

Bricked Stock Samsung Galaxy S2

Well I recently bought a S2 with t-mobile, and just recently it received a OTA upgrade in December. I didn't install it until January, and it looked like everything went fine.
Until it rebooted at stayed on the white screen stating software update
installing and it never moved... Has anyone experienced anything similar?
Re-install Packages
Haven't seen the stock bootloader in a while but there should be an option to re-install packages. Do this.... If it doesnt work then we need to get you into download mode and have you try to use odin.
1. Turn off the device. Pull the Battery. Reinstall Battery.
2. Press and hold both Volume Up and Volume Down keys at the same time.
3. Press the Power key only until the phone vibrates once, then release only the Power key.
4. Continue to hold the Volume up and Volume Down keys until the Android System Recovery screen appears.
5. Press the Volume Down key to highlight Re-install packages(if it is there)
6. Press the Home key to select.
7. Press the Volume Down key to highlight Yes
If there is not a re-install packages try a data/factory reset and see what that does. If nothing, you are trying odin
don't worry, it isn't a brick, follow the instructions above. I think i fixed my friend's phone by simply flashing cwm, I was going to flash a rom... but that did the trick.. but each phone is different.

If you meant only download mode, then you should be able to flash stock with Odin.
If you meant or download mode, then you're probably bricked.
Was it a kernel for t989? Shouldn't be bricked if it was. If it was accidentally another phones kernel...then you're in trouble.

I flashed the wrong rom on my sgh-t989 and bricked it . I found Mobiletechvideos JTagging service, took the chance and sent my phone and 50 dollars , had it back in just about a week working like new . Very nice people and did exactly what they offered.
When I hard bricked my SGSII last month, I too went the MobileTechVideos route. Folks on the forum highly recommended their services, so I purchased their JTAG service and sent them my phone. I was not impressed. They had it for a week (which I'd expected), shipped it back to me uninsured in a padded envelope, and didn't tell me why my phone hadn't been fixed until after I'd received it--and only then because I asked why it wasn't fixed.
At least I received a refund.

[Q] Gnex wont boot. Cant flash from fastboot (too many links error)

CDMA GALAXY NEXUS> Hey guys, I was running Romanbb's 4.0.4 build earlier today. I clicked on a video (which may or may not have been on a porn site) all of a sudden my screen went all wacky. Where it was kind of fuzzy and running diagnal across the screen. I could only see part of it. I thought I might have gotten a virus or something because i have never had one of my devices do this before. So I immideatly rebooted the phone into recovery and wiped eveything including formatting system. I went to flash a nandroid I had of black ice and in the middle of flashing that my phone rebooted itself and stayed there (bootlooping at the google logo) I can get into fastboot and I can get into recovery about one out of every ten times but I cant do anything in recovery because the phone turns itself off insted of booting recovery most of the time (I have clockwork touch) When I do get into recovery without it turning off it reboots if I try to flash anything. It seems to be stable in fastboot (thank god!) but When I get it connected in Wugs Root tool kit and try to flash the stock image it goes through the motions and says FAILED on every step exept the first (which I believe is checking radio). It says ( error too many links) on the first two) and I cant remember the error on the last four but I have tried it a couple times so I can replicate it if needed. Can anyone tell me what to do from here? I really appreciate in advance!!! If this is a hardware error then I would like to get it back to stock to get it replaced. It is weird that it happened while running a rom. Its not like I messed up while flashing or anything.
ADB will recognize it in Fastboot. I already set all of that up when I rooted. when I try to flash the stock+unroot option on wugfresh's toolbox it errors out on every step like there is something wrong with my internal sd on my phone? Im wondering if I should try odin. IDK? Im hoping somebody who has seen this or had this happen before will save the day and tell me what to do.
lol why did you rush into CWM and start wiping things? you should have let it reboot and it probably could have been a one off..
you can try this http://rootzwiki.com/topic/14145-od...actory-odin-restore-402-with-radios-unrooted/
It is stable in fastboot but in cwr it is still geeking out
It still is glitching in cwr. most of the time it either turns off or reboots when I try to go into cwr. i can wipe but if I flash anything it freezes at the point where it starts writing to storage. I have never seen anything like this before.
I have now tried oden as well
It looks like it is a problem with the hardware. The phone is only a couple months old if that. So I really wish I could flash the stock image or at least get rid of cwm. but that is not looking likely. Here are a couple pics of odin showing the problem. Any guidace would be much appreciated. This SUCKS
Why in the heck are you trying to use Odin?
I can only get into fastboot and odin.
CWM wont let me do anything. it crashes and reboots into a bootloop if I try to flash anything. The poster above suggested odin. I dont know what else to do. Please help if you can!
Can you get a screencap of when it fails fastbooting the stock images?
yes
yes, give me couple min and I will post it. Thank you!
I guess I cant. This is all I get now

How are you attempting to access fastboot?
Vol + and Vol - and power all at the same time
Vol + and Vol - and power all at the same time from powered off
And oden was Vol - and power at the same time from powered off
Now no matter what I push it goes to the screen with the yellow triangle.
That screen says you (now) have a corrupt partition.
At this point, you must use Odin, which is unfortunate. What URL did you use to download the image? The current image in that thread was on multiupload.

I can't help but I wanted to share that I had a similar experience. I was bonne stock and clicked on a you tube video and my phone immediately shut down and tried to reboot itself, but only would boot loop. I had to manually reformat my partitions to recover. Sounds like your case might be even worse. Still don't know what my problem was.

so you can't get into bootloader or odin screen any more? if so try using a Jig it works to get the phone into odin mode for me. i used the same usb jig i made for the captivate.
I got the same suggestion from someone else. I have to wait until radio shack opens in the morning and I will give it a shot. Otherwise, I went by verizon and they are having samsung send me a replacment. I would much rather keep this one if I can though
I tried flashing the stock image from fastboot and it failed though when I could get there, and I also tried flashing the stock image through oden when I could get there and both failed multiple times so I don't have much hope. I think something broke.
I am headed to radio shack now. Be back soon with a answer as to wheather I can save my baby or not.

Nexus completely dead (just black screen)

After switching to a new rom and changing kernel my screen freezed quite a lot. I couldn't boot into CWM. So I tried to install a stock rom. Half way through Gnex Toolkit gave me a "too many links" error. The phone rebooted and than... nothing. Just a black screen, no Google logo, no battery logo. When I hit the power button (with or without volume button(s) combination) nothing happens. Completely dead. I'm pretty sure I'm #####. Maybe somebody still has a magic trick.

I don't think you're in trouble just yet. Read a post earlier today describing a similar situation. I think they were able to use OMAP4 or maybe Odin to get everything sorted out. Search "softbrick" here on XDA and see what you come up with. Sorry I don't have a link handy. This is probably going to take a little time and a lot of reading. Don't panic though. From everything I've read the GNex is Really hard to brick permanently. There are way more options for correcting a softbrick than my Evo had. One thing to check from the thread this morning. Pull your battery out, open the device manager on your computer, and connect the phone with the USB cable. You may very briefly see something like OMAP****. It will abort whatever it's trying to do, but it's a good sign. Means there's still something left on your phone that the PC can try to communicate with. Just make sure you read and understand the guides.

I did what he did last night. I got into fastboot again (no recovery mode, no normal boot). When trying to issue fast boot commands I got the "too many links" errors. Also the screen would show artefacts (strange thin stripes as if the GPU was having trouble). As a last resort I tried ODIN (not recommended, only as last resort, you have been warned!). And flashing through Odin gave errors as well... So still stuck. BTW Now I don't have a fastboot and downloading mode anymore. I think Odin screwed this up. Is there a way to restore this?

I just want to be able to download the data from my phone, I don't care about getting android working again right now, I just want to download my photos and videos from the phone. I have a Verizon Galaxy Nexus that's completely stock, including locked bootloader. I tried using the toolkit and I am able to have it see the device while it's in fastboot but I can't do any of the functions because it wants to unlock my bootloader which will erase all my data! I was just swapping the battery on my phone when this happened. I wasn't trying to do anything special, it was just supposed to be a normal boot up but it just got stuck on the "X". I'm running 4.1.1. My stock recovery shows a photo of a dead android and an exclamation point. It looks like this: http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-jF4CgOU8c...ASKg/m6YOuDRcs4g/s1600/AndroidRedTriangle.JPG
Can someone please help me? I will seriously send you a paypal for your time, just please help me the data from my phone. I am somewhat savvy, like I said...I am in fastboot, my drivers are installed, and the toolkit can recognize my phone without any issue.
Thank you soooo sooo much in advance!
Why don't you just boot into stock recovery and just wipe cache. Maybe some rogue app is preventing your boot up.
You will not lose any data by only wiping cache.

Don't fear....
Even if you unlock your boot loader your data is not actually gone. But let's cross that bridge if we get there.
First things first: take your battery out, take your sim card out, put your sim card in and put your battery in. Boot up the phone.
If that doesn't fix you then the next thing to do is try safe mode. Power off the phone. Then, press the power button and BOTH (yes both) the volume up AND the volume down buttons. Hold them until the phone boots up.
If that doesn't work write back. Don't worry though. Your data is safe.

First, thank you so much for replying.
I should have been more clear in my original message, I took my battery out and sim card in and out over 10 times and I even let the phone sit there for 30 minutes while it was at the X animation to no avail.
I have now also attempted a safe mode boot 4 times with no luck. During my safe mode boot attempts, the phone vibrated a few times but the display just remained at the X animation. It even did it after I let go of the volume key. I'm not sure what to make of this but I attempted it twice with holding both volume keys down as soon as the "google" logo appeared and twice with just the volume down key as soon as the "google" logo appeared. Same thing all 4 times, just sits at the X animation.
What would you recommend as a next step to recover the data? I really only care about the DCIM folder, nothing else matters that much.

Thank you for your reply. I was able to get there and I formatted my cache. After that completed I chose the option to reboot the phone. I didn't do anything special during that reboot like trying to hold the volume down button as well for safe mode, I just let it go. It sat at the "X" animation for about 15 minutes before I gave up and tried it again holding the down volume button, again...no luck. I tried it a third time with holding the down and up volume buttons, no luck.
Any other ideas? Again, I know I've said this a few times but believe me when I say...I really appreciate your guys' help.

I think you need to get into fastboot, unlock the bootloader (if it isn't already) and put a clean factory image on. You'll lose your data when you unlock, but there is a thread in this forum on recovering that information. If you're already unlocked, just flash the boot and system images individually - it may clean up whatever is corrupt.

I tried this, it recovered only 36 files out of a 28 GB data file, and the files it did recover were all just files that have been on the phone since I unlocked the bootloader, flashed a custom recovery and flashed a stock OS so I could boot up and do all this. Frankly it seems like the files recovered were all the ones that were on the phone since I flashed a rom, none of my previous data are there. I followed the instructions to a T. Am I doing something wrong? Is the recovery software limiting me somehow because I am not using the paid version?
You have been so kind and helpful thus far, please assist me in figuring out what else I can do.
Thank you!
How the hell..
You can unlock your bootloader using omap flash, doing so will not cause you to lose tour data..................................
There is a thread on it..

It's legit.
Figured out it's easier to download from dropbox as compared to rapidshare.

No matter how many darn times I try or how many different recovery software suites out there I try, I am getting nothing back. This is so disappointing. Can anyone please recommend something to me? A better data recovery solution? A better way to extract the data from the phone? Anything. I am desperate. I am contemplating going to a legit data recovery center and paying the $500 cause I don't know what to do anymore but I don't even know if they'll be able to do anything.

Which phone are you using? Make sure you are pulling from the correct partition for the userdata of your phone.

Not sure of the need to flash a new image. May do more harm than good....

You could have just transferred files using adb and then a factory reset on your phone with the recovery.

[Q] Am I bricked?

Today I was going to flash lifeless rom. So I downloaded it and was going to go into my recovery to flash by holding vol down and the power button. My screen went black. I have been turning it on and off multiple times and getting nothing but the lg screen then it goes black. Keep in mind so far I've only flashed two things. That mod kit and TWRP weeks before this. If I'm not though please help me out.
Your soft bricked.(Can be fixed) just lgnpst to stock there's threads on how to

Are you sure u have a full charge??? I'm just asking cause I got that same stupid black screen when I tried to flash something. Then the ****in phone wouldn't charge with the cord I had for some reason. Took to sprint and all they did was charge it. Felt like a ****in idiot.

Also, you used the wrong key presses to enter recovery.
You need to press volume up and power while the phone is off.
You can use my guide also to LGNPST.

Same issue here. LGPNST will not even detect my phone. Same drivers from rooting when i got the phone. Sucks.

No idea what happened, but after messing around in TWRP for a couple hours. I created a backup tried restoring no go. I selected the zv9 update twice. Flashed twice. rebooted. Boom, it works.
I think you are having a same issue that I had..
I have a special version of freegee app that shelnutt2 gave me in person, and it was the only way i could unlock my bootloader.
But i'm not sure if i can share it or not..

Please do not share it. For those that require the special unlock, you'll have to come to irc and I'll give you a 10 minute safety lecture first. Not trying to withhold anything but as many know with normal freegee you can just lgnpst back if it doesn't work. With this "special" freegee, more is replaced and if something doesn't work right, you might brick the phone. No lgnpst, just hard bricked. Thus we aren't publicly sharing it since only a very very small percentage of people actually need it and we don't want others to brick themselves.

I was one of the minority that could not unlock/install recovery without softbricking. I tried every way to get unlocked. But inevitably every time, it would flash LG and the screen would go black but still be backlit. Everytime I had to lgnpst back (probably close to a dozen times).
Shelnutt gave me the link to the special version of FreeGee and of course it worked! It's nice to finally be unlocked and have recovery because with the v9 OTA message popping up all the time, it's time to install a v9 rooted ROM.
Like others have said, even if you are rooted/unlocked or not, buy the freegee app from the play store and kick $1 to these guys like Shelnutt because not only do they create the work, they are always there willing to help!
I didn't see a donate button for Shelnutt and am wondering one exists...

i didnt have to use any program to fix mine .what you do is let your batter fully die because the sprint version of the phone you cant remove the battery and in order for you to get back to recovery more you have to get you phone to completly cut off.after it dies plug it back in .how you know if its working is you should see your charging icon come on screen .when you do let it charge for about 10 mins.when it does hold power and volume up key till use see the lg logo the let go.you should see writing on the bottom half of your screen if so your good just press volume down twice and the power button again and it will go into recovery mode. if i was you id do a factory restore and load a rom that you know that works.hope this helps.
{guide} soft-brick fix
I had this same issue lastnight. Follow these instructions and you should be G2G!
Rights and Props to AdriVelazquez.
Accessing Recovery Screen (First Step if you have bricked your phone)
This is our initial step for any problems that might arise. If you can access recovery, usually you're in a perfectly fine situation.
1. Power off your phone by holding Volume down & power at the same time.
2. When the screen shuts off, switch to entering fastboot by holding Volume Up & Power. Release immediately once you see a black screen with some text on the bottom.
3. You should see a black screen with some text at the bottom.
4. Press volume down 2x and then the power button.
5. You should see either TWRP or CWM recovery.
6. Wipe Cache, Dalvic Cache, and Factory Wipe
7. Flash new stock zip. Wipe caches again.
8. Restart.
