something went wrong - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I updated to the EL30 modem and my data slowed down quite a bit so i used heimdall and went back to eh17 then flashed back cleanGB mtd. now my phone gets stuck at a black screen any time i reboot after flashing a theme. i have tried several roms mtd and bml and i can no longer flash themes. i dont know what could have happened?

Are you on MTD now? If so you have to mount system in CWM just before flashing.

This happened to me at one time andd the only thing that fixed it was odining back to stock and starting over... either your cwm got corrupted or the mtd partition did...

I'd say that CWM got corrupted...I've had to go thru that at least 3-5 times. Yep, you gonna have to Odin back to stock EC05 and start over. EL30 has been running pretty good for me...running stock deodexed with EL30 modem. I had tried using just the modem on EI22 Roms with little luck.

i would use el30 but i cant stand the green when the screen turns off.

try this....
boot into recovery, go into mounts and storage, format EVERYTHING besides boot. Format Data, Cache, SD card, System. Then install your rom, and boot up. Once it boots up, turn your device off. boot into recovery, wipe dalvik and cache, mount system (do this ONLY if you are installing a BML theme on your MTD rom), install theme, umount system, reboot.

[Q] Can't boot past boot screen after botched ICS theme transition installation.

I was running Starburst v1.9 and saw a thread on Themes & Apps with ICS transitions. I downloaded both just in case (ICS Transitions & Revert back to stock). I went into Root Explorer and checked my Clockwork/Backup and saw that I had a backup in there. I booted into Recovery and flashed the theme transitions for ICS zip and thus problem began.
I then went to restore to restore the backup and it seems like that file was corrupted because it wouldn't restore. I ended up flashing the revert zip file and wiping my rom. It doesn't boot but I can still get into recovery. I believe that the issue is that the theme was made for the v1.9.5 and I had v1.9 of Starburst.
I was messing around with it and I was able to boot back in and click on the Android to set it up. After a while the phone will go crazy and the screen will flicker on and off. The buttons at the bottom became useless. How can I recover from this.
** I used my friend's Sensation and downloaded v.1.9.5 and threw it on my SD. I booted into Recovery and flashed the ROM and it still won't boot up. Any suggestions? **
The phone booting up I think was a luck of the draw thing. Since then the phone has not been able to boot into the actual ROM. I've been without a phone since yesterday and I'm planning on going into the Sprint store and getting it swapped.
Did you wipe system, data, cache, and dalvik?
THEN reflash the rom?
Yes. I was a flashaholic on my Evo.
I notice another thread in q&a with people the same issue as mines. I'm lost and haven't had my phone working for two days now.
Here's what I did:
Delete system, wipe factory reset, cache and dalvik, flashed ROM.
Could it be kernel related? I'm confused. I have a wedding tomorrow and this couldn't have happened at a worse time. Coincidentally something happened on my At&t dumb phone so I'm phoneless.
stupid suggestion...is your battery low?
with the evo it would see corrupted if the battery was low. may not apply, but hey its a shot.
if you cant figure out, theres always Odin to cure your issues
ReDL the ROM and reflash. Try mounting USB storage while in recovery. Alternatively, Odin the stock .tar for a full refresh.
If you've already retired reflashing I'd go with odin back to stock

here is the link for a format all then you can try and flash a rom again if you like. If not I would do like previously suggested and flash return to stock in Odin- link here

Awesome. The wedding made me forget about my phone but now that it's over I'm missing it.
I will flash to stock and re-root.

[Q] My Phone Unroots By itself?!?

PLEASE HELP! iv searched and searched! but im stuck in a WEIRD CASE!
after i use ODIN to flash a custom kernal with CWM it works fine.. i can boot up CMW but when i FLASH ANY ROM, after boot it loads the sprint screen.. and the "stock" looking home, BUT i cant go back to CMW. it goes to STOCK recovery.
WEIRD?
and NOW after i successfully flashed one of starburst early roms, it boots his rom (but i lose CMW! but i think im still rooted) and must flash CMW kernal to flash something else. so basically i can only use CMW ONCE!
and now i want to flash starburst latest rom but every time i try to flash it after using odin to flash kernal it goes BACK TO OLD starburst!
i dono whats going on.. seems like i cant flash anything or root phone properly.
ANY help would be appreciated.
i used (in odin):
Eg30 PLUS
STOCK CWM5
and i used the FORMAL ALL in CMW before any flash
Format all? I don't remember seeing that option in CWM but either way I'd stop using it. Just use 'wipe data/factory reset' or manually format the data partition.
If you're formatting everything(?) then you could be wiping the partition containing CWM.
Suppose to b formatting /system.. When going from one rom to the other
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
sorry i ment to say im using Calkulin FORMAL ALL.. its formats whats necessary before a flash
I think i had the same problem. Once flashed first kernel i could NOT get cwm to come up. Only nandroid recovery. I think what finally got everything to work right was that when i flashed the kernel again, i took out the sd card. I think that when i was flashing the kernel it was getting mixed up between internal and external sd's. Haven't had any touble since.
Just reinstall same kernel but take out sd card first.

[Q] CM9 Install went bad

I upgraded to CWM5 and tried to install CM9 and now I get Assert Failed Getprop..... and it stops now it is stuck in a boot loop. I am guessing I have a bad download of the flash and will have to re-download.

I agree with the former post.
For reference, here's an example of a question:
I'm Ron Burgundy?
Ok new Question now it is stuck in a reboot and I tried a new download of the flash. I odin back to stock then odin CWM5 wiped data and try to install the flash now it says verifying BLD/MTS (maybe) doesn't stay up very long and then goes into boot loop. now what should I try????
If I'm not mistaken converting from BML to MTD during the process you phone does reboot. I can't remember if it does it more then once.
But i could be wrong, i haven't flashed back to BML since i flashed CM7 before it was a RC0 build.

OK download a 3rd flash download and tried again gets to checking state and starts rebooting I stopped it after 10 mins of reboots about 10 secs each. These are the steps I am doing
Odin to stock
after reboot Odin CWM5
after reboot copy Zip from laptop to 0000Flash folder on SD Card
Boot into CWM5 wipe Factory data and Cashe
Install Zip for SD card and
Finding
Opening
the checking state
Then reboots and reboots and reboots
what am I doing wrong
FYI.. I have tried 3 different mirrors just to make sure one of the Mirrors went bad.
I've seen this before does it go into a reboot and then shows cwm and shows the cwm robot with an red x or an error?
This IS a bad download...redownload it from the last mirror and odin back to el30 via stock tar reroot it and flash the new cm9
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
If you are 100% sure you are on the epic 4g with the keyboard then you need to Odin el30 and then cwm then flash cm9. It is failing getprop either because you don't have the right epic or your rom dev of the rom you are on messed up. Just Odin to el30 and repartition with a pit.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
Yes I have the Epic 4G with keyboard I have had it for over a year and have flashed a bunch of different things to it. I have never seen it do this before. I will try and repartition but how should I go about doing it? I don't get the getprop error anymore just when verifying it goes for about a sec or two and then starts the reboots.
OK tried my 4th firmware download and same thing. all different mirrors anything else to try?

Give up
I'm not sure there's only been one case of this previously and even he got it done after a couple tries..
Wiped data cache and dalvik? I didn't see dalvik but don't see how that would cause this conflict.. I'm at a loss usually oding back to el30 rerooting then flashing a fresh cm9 works btw did you download cm9 via pc and transfer or your phone? Because I know data can be lost from phone to pc especially if its a bad cable aka stock usb.

I will try this I just read that you dont want to mess this up because you will brick your phone so I want to make sure I have the right file.

Never Mind got the Pit

rebooted
Odin CWM5
Rebooted
Wiped all data include Davlik
Installed Zip for SD
Checking state of BML/MTD
and rebooted but this time it booted all the Way. Thanks to all of you for the help.

CM9 GPS fix changing back to GB rom

I'm trying to fix GPS by locking on with a gingerbread rom, then powering off, then back to CM9. I'm just not sure how to do that since I don't have CWM recovery anymore. I'm not familiar with the recovery that came with CM9. Any help?
Possibly someone else knows a better way, but I honestly did it by using the autoflash to EL29 through Odin http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1433101.
I would then boot up, get the GPS lock and power off while in Maps and locked. Then flashed the CWM from the CM9 original post tar through odin, and flashed CM9 from there.
Bulky, painful process that upped the flash count again, but got it to work for me.
ok, so I there's no CWM style "install from zip" option with CM9A2. Is this something that is expected to change anytime soon? Will CWM recovery ever be included?
I have a fast and accurate fix by running two apps one time. Run Faster Fix, then run GPS Fix. My gps locks before my map is even done loading now.

I am sure there will be once we get out of alpha phase and get source code for a working custom ics recovery. You just have to remember that our devs are working with very very limited source code right now so it limits what they can do.
For what they have to work with they are doing an amazing job though.

tried this...still can't get a lock.
I also tried auto root package wich eventually said that it installed el26CWM, but it got stuck on the yellow triangle screen (which apparently was supposed to be gone.) So now I'm stuck in download mode looking or a gingerbread based rom in .tar format so that I can flash using regular old odin. Can anybody provide me a link to any gingerbread based rom that is a tar file. I thought that I could just download a gingerbread rom zip file, then extract and find the .tar file within, but apparently that is not the case. any one have a link?

I tried the one touch odin method and it passed, but my phone gets stuck on the sprint 4g boot animation loop. so then I found a el26cwm.tar file and went back into odin mode and tried flashing it through regular odin (in the pda slot) and everything passed, but I'm still stuck in the sprint 4g boot animation. What am i doing wrong?
That is usually from a bad install. Try flashing a kernel. Boot into recovery and flash a ROM from there. Don't forget to wipe or use Calkulins format all package.

before flashing cm9 in cwm wipe data/factory reset.
i was in a boot loop myself after going back to GB to get GPS.
i odin'd el26cwm, boot into cwm flashed calkulins 3.0 rom, got a gps lock, rebooted into cwm recovery that came with 3.0, flashed cm9, gapps and modem. got stuck in a bootloop....i never did reflash the GB rom, just odin'd el26cwm but this time in cwm recovery i wiped data/factory reset before flashing cm9 and gapps no need to redo modem.

finally got back to CM9w/GPS lock!!!!!
After boot loops from auto root, one touch odin, and regular odin, I finally went back into recovery, factory wipe, then install gunslinger, then install unammed ROM, then got a lock in google maps, power off, then followed the CM9 instructions again. Now I'm all good, but wasted 3 hours that I could have been working (which is my loss since I'm self-employed) However, now I have GPS on CM9, so I'm content. Thanks to everyone who helped I really appreciate it.

What was it that finally got you from Android Recovery and back to CWM??
I've been trying to get this corrected all day after I installed CM9 Alpha 3 last night from the stock ROM and found GPS didn't work which i need.
My issue is simply: I just can't get back to a normal CMW screen to install different ROMs that are on the phones internal storage.
I'm currently downgraded to the EL26 which I installed successfully through ODIN, however, I still get the Android Recovery instead of CWM. I've tried EL29, flashing CWM through ROM Manager, etc... Nothing works and Android Recovery will not let me install a ROM from the phones internal storage. I need CWM to install CM7, then CM9 again, to enable the CM9 Alpha 3 GPS fix.
Use mobile odin and flash this kernel: http://db.tt/0QJkleJR
When screen goes off hold power+volume up to boot into recovery. It won't boot up because its a gb kernel, but its the safest cwm to flash things with.
Sent using Tapatalk 2 Beta-5 on AOKP 32 ROM
Also, be sure to wipe before flashing.

[Q] Can't ODIN or flash, saying Unable to mount items

I tried billard412's Sprint ROM restore to stock and something went haywire.. It rebooted and then it would just boot loop. Ok I thought I'll just Odin back .. but everytime I tried any TAR to Odin it would just stop at cache.img.. I am able to get into TWRP and when I tried a restore, it restored fine, but then it would say
E: Unable to mount /efs
E: Unable to mount /preload
E: Unable to mount /carrier
I've tried various operations, megawipes and such and it would still give me that error on my Sprint Galaxy Note 2 at the end.
Can anyone help me please?
This is scary! I was about to use that so I could do the full ma7 update but now I'm not so sure.
Maybe you should ask billard for ideas since he knows what actions his zip takes and *should* have clues about what parts could go wrong.

I think if I had backed up my EFS folder I might be OK, but alas. I didn't .. This is my first Samsung phone, coming from HTC.... I asked in his thread but it's probably one of those one in a million chance type of things that happened to me
well if that didnt work i just had the same issue
due to upgrading to stock MA7 and flashing an LK8 rom with an MA7 stock kernal
i had to odin twrp recovery and run the restore zip from there since i cant mount preload
also if the zip dont work load a custom rom then go back to recover and try it then you should be able to odin again
*also when i went back to stock LJC i went to manual recovery and cleared cache and dalvik because when i did a factory reset E: failed again*

i dont think so i swear
i got same issue it even told me to connect to kies due to odin not working nor the restore for 1 click
you have to make sure when you went to recoevry and flashed the stock ljc
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2086769
it will take you back to stock period when your phone boots
you will have to shut it down and then go to recoveryt which it will be stock and then
wipe factory 2 times and then cache 2 times and that should repartition your phone
reboot it and then use a stock tar and then repartition you should be good to go and you even have 0 reset counts with stock LJC
