PLEASE HELP! iv searched and searched! but im stuck in a WEIRD CASE!
after i use ODIN to flash a custom kernal with CWM it works fine.. i can boot up CMW but when i FLASH ANY ROM, after boot it loads the sprint screen.. and the "stock" looking home, BUT i cant go back to CMW. it goes to STOCK recovery.
WEIRD?
and NOW after i successfully flashed one of starburst early roms, it boots his rom (but i lose CMW! but i think im still rooted) and must flash CMW kernal to flash something else. so basically i can only use CMW ONCE!
and now i want to flash starburst latest rom but every time i try to flash it after using odin to flash kernal it goes BACK TO OLD starburst!
i dono whats going on.. seems like i cant flash anything or root phone properly.
ANY help would be appreciated.
i used (in odin):
Eg30 PLUS
STOCK CWM5
and i used the FORMAL ALL in CMW before any flash
Format all? I don't remember seeing that option in CWM but either way I'd stop using it. Just use 'wipe data/factory reset' or manually format the data partition.
If you're formatting everything(?) then you could be wiping the partition containing CWM.
Suppose to b formatting /system.. When going from one rom to the other

sorry i ment to say im using Calkulin FORMAL ALL.. its formats whats necessary before a flash
I think i had the same problem. Once flashed first kernel i could NOT get cwm to come up. Only nandroid recovery. I think what finally got everything to work right was that when i flashed the kernel again, i took out the sd card. I think that when i was flashing the kernel it was getting mixed up between internal and external sd's. Haven't had any touble since.
Just reinstall same kernel but take out sd card first.

Need help I installed midnight rom v2.2 today I did the recommended wipes as instructed. I had cwm 4.0.1.5 and did my backup twice. When I installed midnight every thing went good but then during reboot it just rebooted back into cwm 5.0.2.3 I've pulled the battery and nothing. I can't even get into my restore files ......did flashing the new cwm erase the backup?????I'm stuck what do I do???????
in the older 4.x cwm backups are on the internal sd card
in the newer 5.x cwm backups are on the external card.
(may be the other way around)
as long as you didnt format the actual sd cards your alright the backups are still there.
i think from cwm you can mount both to a pc and just copy the clockwork folder from one to the other. though i may be wrong.
might be easiest to odin a kernel that has the old 4x cwm
check the dev section there are a few floating around.
edit this kernel has the old cwm as both a flashable zip from inside cwm
and a .tar from odin
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1284092
sometimes it takes more than 1 wipe/format to fully clear or you could have a bad download.
there are also a few full system .tar files that will get you back up and running on a stock system.
Thanks I used Odin to reflash a kernel with the cwm I needed and was able to restore. Ill try to flash midnight against knowing I'm this now!
no prob.
may think about copying the backups to the other sd card too.
that way they are still there even on the newer 5x cwm if you have a problem.
Would it work if I upgrade to zedomax v6.02 it comes with cwm5 same as what comes in midnight rom2.2 that way I don't go through the same problem if it happens again?
it should but your best bet would be to update to that kernel with cwm5
then create a new backup before continuing.
If your phone boots into CWM after a battery pull, just select reboot system now and that will boot the phone up. I see that on my phone as well at times. Not sure what causes it but that always fixes it for me.

I tried that about 5 times it just kept booting into cwm. Maybe a bad download im not sure, but ill try it again and see if it works this time around. Thanks!
Problem solved i just reflashed the rom and it booted up just fine. It works great. Very good rom!

Hi everyone, I have been lurking the forums for a while looking at info but I want to be sure before I brick this thing. I satrted with an EL29 and did the EL29 stock+ roo from qb king as well as the CWM+rogue for the EL29. Now I am looking to flash to just a GB ROM, no ICS, (Caulkin's maybe?). I want to knwo if I can go about it with what I have installed or if I shoudl flash to EL26 with Odin (if I can even do so?). I know thei has probably been asked a million times, but its so much information I dont even know what to look for. I appreciate the input everyone.
EL29 rogue is sufficient for flashing gb roms, feel free to flash away. The issues are from returning to gb front ics

Okay, so I can do the nandroid backup, and wipig of the disk and cache using the rogue CWM?
Yep. Your good to go!
okay, so i downloaded this ROM
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1332837
and i put it in the external sd
I also put the format all zip in the sd to be used first.
I have a nandroid backup and Titanium backup done.
Ill run the format all script then the rom flash after and I should be good? am I missing anything? I would hate for my next post to be that I bricked the thing lol
go grab it

Go to this location and download Calkulin's format all application.
What does it do? - Well my friend this masterpiece of technologically advanced mechanics and engineering does everything you need to do before you flash a ROM, automatically!!
But to be serious just download and put it into you external-SD card, or internal, and then enter CWM, volume-up+power, and then find where you put it into and then select flash and let it do it's magic. It's best to do it twice just in case.
Then flash the ROM, but be warned!, I wouldn't touch Ice Cream Sandwich ROMs until you become proficient in flashing terminology and techniques.
There are TONS of bricks involving "noobs" trying to flash ICS. So it's best you avoid it.
That's it man, you got it. Run calks format all and then flash that beast. Don't get impatient. It may take a little time to flash and then boot.

Let me double check out loud:
1.flash format all
2.wipe cache, dalvik-cache
3.flash ROM
4.reboot
5.connect to internet and download titianium backup
6.restore backups of the applications
7.have fun? lol
You are doing it right.
Titanium backup to SD card (for apps etc.)
Nandroid to SD card using Rogue CWM [as long as it is not TOUCH VERSION!]
back to recovery. Install zip from SD, choose Calkulin's format all.
Back and Install zip from SD and choose the ROM.
As a note; you may be able to get away with using the 'Modified format all' - save data. But if you start getting errors and force closes go back and use the format all.
Also don't forget to update your PRL and Profile afterwards too.
A few more questions, and I really appreciate it guys.
Where is my nandroid backup stored normally, I used the rogue CWM (I am assuming default location) and it finished but I dont know where it was saved.
Also, do I need to change or update the modem after I flash the ROM or no?
Finally, I guess I wont need to access the nandroid backup again unless I want to revert to an old ROM? would that be all I have to do if I decide I dont want to keep Calk's ROM?

The Nandroid is usually in your external-SD card, unless you don't have one, then it's in your internal storage. To access the Nandroids, to change the name, put your phone into debugging mode(settings-->applications) and then connect to your computer and select "view files".
A quicker method would be to use the built in app called "my files" then select clockworkmod(It might be in your ex-sd).
No you don't NEED to update your modem, only your PRL and Profile.
You don't have to mess with the Nandroid backup unless you want to revert back to whatever ROM you backed up.
For me its on external sd in a folder called clockworkmod. You can rename them to identify easier, ex: blazer_4.1_may11. Just make sure there are no spaces or it wont work on restore. Modems are completely interchangeable. You can flash any modem on any rom whether its gb or ics. just flash cache and dalvik cache first and update prl and profile upon reboot
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2
Edit: when switching roms you must completely wipe using format all. When I upgrade the same rom to a newer version, I normally get away with the modified format all. That way you don't lose any data or settings. If things start force closing and acting wonky, you know you then have to wipe and start over fresh.
Feel free to ask away. better you get the answers before you break your beautiful phone. Good luck!
Thanks everyone, I am now ROMmed. I appreciate everyone's input. I also installed the ACS ICS theme and it looks awesome. I'm glad I got clarification here. Now I read about flashing to EL26+ last official CWM before doing any ICS flash? I dont plan to but I want to know for when I do decide do (if before the official release)
Also on a side note, and I think this is better posted on the ROMS thread, but for anyone with Caulk's 3.0 mod, is there a way to disable the volume keys turning on the screen? its kind of a pain lol
Yes, el26 is the gateway to ics. How I do it is mobile Odin its a handy tool. Flash el26 tar in mobile Odin and it will reboot hold power + vol up till you get to recovery. wipe and flash ics. To get back to gb or to update an ics rom, I always mobile Odin el26. Its really easy actually once you do it. I understand the fear with all the bricks happening. The main plus either mobile Odin is I can flash on the go without a pc

Ok so I had a question...I flashed ICS. I've never had root as long as I've owned the phone. I flashed that "OTA" from EL29 to FD24zip after watching qbkings video. I was on stock nonrooted never flashed anything EL29,downloaded the update from EL29toFD24zip put it on my external SD card and flashed from stock recovery. Is it going to be a pain to get back to stock unrooted or rooted EL29?

Easy Peasy. Use sfhub's one-click 'reset data' http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1433101 If you wish to 'unroot' (don't know why though) use his Autoroot to 'unroot'
Is there any reason I would flash from EL29 to FD24 other than ICS? or rather is it ever required? benefits?
also, what is Odexed vs Deodexed? I have seen it a lot lately
anyone? I am especially curiosu about what being odexed vs deodexed is

thanks a lot man. I did a bunch of forum searches until i found some stuff on it. Another question, do thee phones take forever to charge for everyone else?
So i did the ULVH1 update through ODIN, followed the instructions. Once i was on ODIN picked the file for it. Ran it at firt it said Boot! Then Pass! So phone trys to reset but i get stuck on the reboot screen! Did i just brick the phone? Im rooted and using a custom rom (jedi mind trick v7). I need help on this.
Oh onre more thing. When i was stuck on the reboot. I tried getting into CWM and it got me through. Aren't i suppose to be unrooted already once this update occured?
Reboot loop? If you can get into CWM, you can always wipe, flash, wipe cache to fix things. If you can get into CWM you're still ok.
Now the thing about unroot and recovery, there's sort of different things. You can be unrooted, but still have CWM. CWM just lets you flash new ROMs that aren't manufacturer certified, I believe. I forget the details. So booting into ICS you could be unrooted, but the recovery is still CWM/TWRP
You are much better off using TWRP then CWM.

Would you still use TWRP to flash roms that the OP recommends using CWM or CWM Touch?
I also understand NAND backups you made with CWM won't be restored successfully by TWRP?
So I got it to work. Im a noob on this stuff, so i wasnt sure if the file that XDA had was bad or not. I used a diff. one from phandroid.com. Went through ODIN and it went through with no problem. Lost root and CWM. Basically im back to stock. I eventually rooted again and CWM. But the funny part about it is that why do i still have my pics on the gallery? I thought this deletes everything? Like i said. Im a noob! lol. Everything seems working fine. Screen shots (went back the old way, instead of Power and Volume down.) Also, ISIS is that on google play? :good:
No flashing back to stock does not erase your internal storage.

you're the 2nd person with the same issue in the last 10 mins...i wonder wth is going on with the stock files or odin. I'll tell you the same thing I told another user ...If you used odin 3.0.7...trying using 3.0.4 instead. Another user did that and it worked...so hopefully you'll get the same results.

I tried using 3.0.4 and it did not work, however i was able to flash CWM through odin so now everything is wiped clean. Hopefully stock rom will go through this time.
Edit: yup, that did it. flashing CWM was so crucial.

you should post what you did here...help em out.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1886634
SIMPLE FIX....
preform factory reset in recovery before (or after) flashing stock.
Stock odin flash does not flash or wipe data partition. and some files that you have in there become incompatible with older firmware and stop stock from booting.
NOTE!!!!! factory reset from STOCK recovery WILL WIPE SD CARD TOO!!!
CWM recovery factory reset WILL NOT wipe sd card... backup your pics and downloads!!!!
hey, what file did you use to flash cwm my problem seems to be nearly identical to yours please reply

Hey guys all my restores are failing half way through. It also fails if I try to factory reset or wipe dalvik but wipe cache works fine It fails if i try flash any ROM.. And if I try to boot to system it shows SG logo then black screen I'm really kind of lost here. I've already tried flashing 4 different versions of Twrp/clockworkmod and I get the same result every time. The roms I'm trying to flash were running fine on my device before this happened. Never seen this before please help thank you.

I have sgh i747 at&t us model. Unlocked Sim for Tmobile use. Before having problems. I flashed vanilla rootbox att nightly. it was running fine then I flashed acid audio mod. And it worked but not well with my player of choice. So i flashed a restore from fright before the sound mod. And all I got was 2 different Samsung logos then black screen. At this point Twrp started asking for a password. I tried an older backup. (rootbox stable) and it booted fine. Everything seemed to be working. But when I rebooted again I got the 1St SG logo then black screen. Now recovery doesn't read anything on the internal card as well as the other problems I stated. I used mskips toolkit to flash Twrp originally and now I've been flashing back and forth between recoveries using recovery flashable zips. Also every time I flash roms or restore I did factory wipe/cache/dalvik and after I started having these issues I tried wiping system and that didn't help either. Thanks for trying to help
Sent from RootBox infected sensation or my PacMan e739
what recovery are you currently sitting on?
Twrp 2.4.4.0 is what I started with and now I'm back on it but from a flashable zip this time instead of whatever mskips toolkit used
Sent from RootBox infected sensation or my PacMan e739
here is the link to an odin flashable twrp 2.5.0.0 tar: http://techerrata.com/file/twrp2/d2att/openrecovery-twrp-2.5.0.0-d2att.tar
and here's a recovery flashable twrp 2.5.0.0 zip link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1917517&d=1367104589
if you flash in recovery, be sure to reboot recovery in order to boot into the new version. i'm sure you know most of this but i'm just trying to cover all the bases.
is twrp still asking for the password or were you able to get passed that?
if you have a micro sd card, you could place a ROM/gapps on it, flash this latest twrp recovery from odin or recovery, perform a full wipe (cache, dalvik, data, system) and flash the ROM/gapps. see if that remedies your situation.
if you dont have a micro sd card, and it appears you've wiped the system so there's no OS, you may have to odin back to rooted stock and start over. keep me posted
Still no luck. i flashed twrp2.5 through recovery and after rebooting back to recovery it still asked for a password so I hit cancel at which point it lets me continue and after full wipe as you described above and a fresh flash of stable rootbox 3.9.1 (md5 matched) im still in the same situation. also factory wipe says failed still
I think at this point if it were me, I would Odin flash back to stock then start from scratch. Pain in the butt I know, and no guarantee, but usually flash back to stock is a safe bet.
Another option is to grab the Odin flashable cwm tar in the "root from recovery" method in the general section. Flash the tar, boot into recovery and flash the 6.0.3.1 zip in post #2 of my signature link. Reboot recovery and try wiping/flashing again.
Since you're not entering the password in TWRP, I think that's why you're not getting successful wipes and flashes.
now I used the power+home+vol down button combo to see if bootloader would start. it gave me a choice to download a custom rom or cancel so I canceled and the phone rebooted and i was blessed with the beautifull rootbox animation. my rootbox 3.9.1 nandroid booted and seems to be running fine. Now Im afraid to reboot in fear it will start the whole process over again. any suggestions? or should I just leave it powered on for the rest of its life lol
edit: well I got up the guff to reboot and everything came back fine again WTH. this is so weird, I wish I had a clue what happened. anyways I just wanted to thank you guys one more time for you help. hopefully we wont have to come back to this thread. Peace ;-]
Man that is strange. If that ever happens again it would be interesting to see the log if you can get it. I wonder if there were issues mounting a partition and/or your SD card. If TWRP and CWM were both having an error and the files were on your SD card that would probably be the only thing in common that could cause something like this. Some Transformers seemed to have the password issue, but doesn't seem related to your experience. Glad you got it sorted.
