I recently re-flashed my phone to a ROM I was running before however the functionality of one thing is not consistent. Before when I would click a file in the browser (an mp4 in this case) it would bring up the prompt to choose a video player. Now when clicking an mp4 file, android wants to save the file to the SD card and gives me no choice on playing it. I've tried setting a video player as default to play mp4's, this works in ES File Explorer when clicking on it however from both the Android stock browser as well as Dolphin Browser it only wants to save the file and never prompts to play it. Is there somewhere within the android OS I can choose file extensions I would like it to automatically play?
Edit: This shouldn't matter, but just in case, this is an Epic 4G running Legendary 2.2.

I'm having the same problem and it started a few days ago. I didn't reset the phone and to the best of my knowledge nothing has changed except for the save prompt. Any site with an mp4 will prompt to save the file instead of simply playing it. I have installed and reinstalled the browser with no luck. I also reset the browser features to default. Since it is also happening with the default browser I am suspecting something in the phone config.
My phone is Verizon Droid X2
What browser are you running?
Go to the market and make sure you have adobe flash player installed maybe that could help...also some roms don't play certain video codecs not sure if the one you are does or not but that might be the case

Mods, if this is better in the general Android app section since it isn't really Epic exact, please move.
So, as most mobile phones do, the Epic records in 3gp format. Fine for playing back on the phone itself, but becomes a pain when you pull the file off to a PC, or any other media player that doesn't support that file. I know there are applications that can easily convert the 3gp file to a more broadly supported mp4, but I was wondering if there was an Android app out there that could convert 3gp files to mp4 (or any other more common type) actually on the phone?
That would be awesome. Then DLNA (via PS3) might be worth something.
It seems there's some type of video editor that comes on the Droid X stock called Arc Video Editor.
There's an .apk out there from a Droid X dump. Tried installing it, but there's no way to run it after installing. Doesn't show up in the apps list. Other users have reported they couldn't get it to run either.

There is a website I go to that hosts flash videos...it's of the adult nature, but that's really not relevant...anyway, when using a previous ROM (Simply AOSP I believe) it would automatically open the video with an external app, which I set to use Rock Player. This was using the Dolphin HD browser, and I did no configuration/settings changes to get this to happen...in fact I found out about it by accident and was shocked it worked as it did.
Now I'm running ACS Frozen and it's back to "normal" where it'll play the video in the browser like it should...does anyone know what I'm talking about and how to get that working again?
I've tried a few times to copy a few .mkv files over to my Nexus and it continually crashes my Explorer. Details are:
- Connected via usb.
- Transfer method a simply copy and paste via Windows Explorer.
- Using Windows 7 x64.
- Already transfered .ogg, .avi, .mpg, .mpeg and no problems.
I saw this thread in the "similar threads" that popped up where there is a similar problem with the Xoom. I even tried using DoubleTwist but the newest version requires the device to be attached in mass storage mode. Bummer.
Has anyone had a similar issue? Apart from finding an easy transfer method (I'm currently setting up Songbird to try) I would like to know how transferring a .mkv file would crash Explorer. Please don't waste time saying Windows is crap (or any variant). It's not really that informative!

Songbird doesn't support .mkv.
Google for "mkv windows 7 exlorer crash". It may be related to your installed codecs.
Ive had problems moving just small jpgs to the nexus from w7 64bit along with a few others, think one guy was even on a mac.
ive managed to move a mkv to the phone no probs tho.
when it does lock up while transferring i use wifi and this works fine, just not as easy as drag n drop in windows.
it's most likely the MTP which is blocking non recognized or non allowed extensions
I was able to use WiFi File Explorer to transfer my .mkv files. I'm guessing any similar manner would work as well.

Just got my Nexus today. Naturally, the first files I tried to copy were a batch of 3 720p, H.264-encoded Matroska video files (.MKV). Explorer crashed and respawned.
Tried again. Explorer crashed and respawned.
Read this thread and renamed '.mkv' to '.mkv_'. No problems.
It seems already my gut reaction to the lack of a removable card and USB Mass Storage were justified...
(Now to see what codecs this device supports playback of...)
I've been able to put .mkv files in the movies folder just fine.

its your divx codec, I had to uninstall all my codecs, otherwise it would crash explorer everytime i moved over a mkv video
you can rename the files, but a pure fix is to UNINSTALL DIVX.
after uninstalling it i have no issues with MKVs transferring anymore.
if your worried about that making you unable to play AVIs, go download the shark007 codec package. i have that installed and i can play all videos on my PC and can transfer everything without issues.
Just a quick question... Can galaxy nexus play 720p mkv files by default, or do you have to install an external player? If so, which?

it can't. best player is DICE Player, it's not free, but it's simply the best for MKVs. plays my 720p mkvs perfectly.
ok, i really have the lg optimus L9 from tmobile. but no forum yet for the L9 so here i am. just got the phone and am new to andriod, have ice cream.
just want to play a frickin mp3 and avi files that are on the sd card. if i use file manager and naviagate to avi video, i see a small thumbnail. but when i try to click it i get 'try again after scanning media file'. no idea how to scan media files. navigate to mp3 and click get a choice of google play music or music player. music player gives me again "try again after scanning media files'. now all of a sudden the google media works for my mp3 - no idea why.
guess i am trying to understand how to scan media files. and which program will use the library, google play music or music player. and how can i play video. i am ok with even purchasing a player as i really like to play just about any format without having to convert. what is the player out there that will play the most formats?

1) if i copy a media file to my storage card, how can i play it right away, without having to update my whole library. i want to download, point an applicaiton to it an play it.
2) what is the video player that can play the most formats?
1)Open the file with file manager. I prefer the root explorer.
2)LG stock player supports everything, at least no problems even with .mkv packed files.

Also if the file was downloaded from web, you can select/open in directly in the download manager.

OK, just had same issue (same 'system message') trying to watch videos using the built-in Video Player. Maybe it was the first time I used it, but I was actually trying to figure out how to use the new 'Q-Slide' feature to watch a video while doing something else on the phone.
I actually pulled up the manual PDF (downloaded from LG, here), then <CTRL+F> (searched the document for similar system mssgs), and got a 'hit' on Page 49 of the OEM manual (my search, BTW, was 'media files'--'scan for' never found it).
You have to let the system do this for the 'FileShare' app also (I'm sure it's about 'indexing'), so I did, and it worked.
Not so much a 'system error', as a little 'systemic quirk' (much like a cosmic queef)

There are many ways, but one way is:
Connect your tab to a Mac or pc via usb and use file manager / Windows explorer to drag and drop files. You can put them in the Videos folder or create one. I don't know all the formats the built in app will play. You can also get BS player or MX player or vlc player from the play store. Those support a lot of formats
To delete the wonder of nature video, you can open the gallery app, select it by long press, and delete.
