Mods, if this is better in the general Android app section since it isn't really Epic exact, please move.
So, as most mobile phones do, the Epic records in 3gp format. Fine for playing back on the phone itself, but becomes a pain when you pull the file off to a PC, or any other media player that doesn't support that file. I know there are applications that can easily convert the 3gp file to a more broadly supported mp4, but I was wondering if there was an Android app out there that could convert 3gp files to mp4 (or any other more common type) actually on the phone?
That would be awesome. Then DLNA (via PS3) might be worth something.
It seems there's some type of video editor that comes on the Droid X stock called Arc Video Editor.
There's an .apk out there from a Droid X dump. Tried installing it, but there's no way to run it after installing. Doesn't show up in the apps list. Other users have reported they couldn't get it to run either.
Still looking around..

I want to try putting some DVD's onto my Touch HD. I'm looking for a program to rip a DVD and size it for the Touch HD's 800x480 screen.
I already use AnyDVD, and tried Clond DVD mobile - but couldn't find a compatible setting. What do you use?
As well, it's hard to find which video formats WMP mobile is compatible with. I'm hoping NOT to load a second player...so ideas?
I use PocketDivEncoder ( http://www.pocketdivxencoder.net/EN_index.htm ), it's a very good program with many options.
I use SPB Mobile DVD and then convert them using that HD encoder on the forums here. There's probably a better/easier/quicker way but I'm new to this and just latched on to the first posts I could find that told me how to do it.. hehe.
sschrup - why do you need BOTH spbMobileDVD and the HD encoder program? If spbMobileDVD will create a wmv file, aren't you ready to go?
What benefit does the HD encoder offer?

The encoder application they have here makes adjustments to the file that usually make it smaller and perform better on our devices. I don't think that the app rips DVDs though, which is why I use SPB Mobile DVD to rip it first. Although maybe they're added that functionality by now, I haven't checked the thread lately.
I noticed this on a site this morning, haven't tried it yet but it looks good

What intermediate format do you convert it to using CloneDVD mobile? (VOB passthough? mpg?) I assume minimal conversion to keep quality high...since every conversion degrades quality?
Just out of interest, try adding this to the top of your devices.ini file (in the CloneDVD Mobile directory). Then convert a file using this cloneDVDm profile and HDencoder. Both will produce mp4 files. How do they compare in size, quality, etc?
Code:

;Res2=720x480

Hi everyone,
Just to a couple of questions.
When I record a wide screen 800x480 video with the phone it plays back fine on the phone. When I copy it to my PC it won't play the audio. I have tried using VLC player, and Windows Media player. No sound.
The file is a .3gp type file (I chose mp4 encoding). I think a missing codec called samr is required to get sound on the clips on the PC. Anyone know a way around this?
Secondly, I have lots of clips I would like to look at on the phone. I tried uploading a H.264 file (mp4 file) and it won't playback. plays fine on my PC obviously. Tried using a conversion program to resize it to the exact 800x480 in H.264. Still won't play on the phone. what conversion tool do you use and what codec must the file be to play on the desire. H.264 doesn't seem to work?
the tool that works for me is "Convert Any to DVD Professional 4.0.5). It has an option for Nexus one H.264 and you can also crop the conversion etc. Oter conversion programs did not work for me even though I chose H.264. strange.
I use Any Video Converter Pro.
Also used it for my Magic without problems.
Winmenc works nicely with h264 encodes, someone posted a profile on these boards. However there is a lipsync issue.
I cant seem to get handbrake working with h264 which is a pain because that is what I normally use.
I have tried Google and searched this forum, no joy. My wife has an iPhone and emailed me a photo she took on it, its a .mov file. My hd7 sees it fine, but states it doesn't have an application to play it. Any ideas, I know I can convert the video and sync using Zune software on my of, but would like to see the videos directly on my phone. Any ideas would be very helpful.
i'm guessing she sent it to you via MMS? iPhone has the most wacked way of sending imagines and videos over MMS. What I would suggest is to find the iPhone app which sends them in accordance with every other phone that exists. Then tell her to send it to you using that app instead of the generic iPhone MMS sender.
.mov isn't exactly a standard format either, for example a stock windows 7 desktop machine might have issues playing .mov without a codec.
Yea. That's a Quicktime Format. Not going to have much luck with that. I know 3GPP is based on an Apple format, IIRC, but MOV files are pretty much off-limits unless Microsoft licensed it from Apple (which I'm more inclined to doubt).
I just got the GN 10.1 2014 tablet. Looks great, works great.
I am VERY new to the video game. I want to encode some DVDs and Blurays and move them onto this thing.
Apparently the free encoding app called HandBrake needs specific settings for each model tablet?
Where do I find settings for the Galaxy Note 10.1 2014?
A friend gave me a file he made with Handbrake that he encoded as an .mp4 for his Amazon Kindle Fire HD.
If I try to drag/drop copy that file from my PC over to the Galaxy Note 10.1, a dialog window comes up on the PC
saying that it will "convert" the file and take 2 hours. Why would it need to convert it, if the file is already a full HD
mpeg4? Or, is that the part about needing custom settings for each android device, to use in handbrake?
Ideally, I want to learn how to set the settings in Handbrake so that the completed file will SIMPLY copy over to
the galaxy note in a few minutes (normal file copy), and NOT be re-converted a second time.
Where would I learn about the settings needed for the Handbrake app?
I can see from google that several of the high-cost video encoder apps have already added a "profile" for this tablet.
But, Handbrake is free, if we can learn the proper settings.
Sincere Thanks,
Neal
Hi
Have a search on the internet for nexus 10 hand brake settings. Both tablets have the same screen resolution and the nexus has been out longer so the setting should be readily available. If you have a MPEG4 it should already play it on the samsung the only advantage of using handbrake is to reduce the file size whilst maintains the quality. Ripping your own DVD's and converting the for your tablet can be time consuming. I do not condone piracy at all but if you already own the physical DVD or blu ray to be honest you may be better down loading a digital copy. Someone else would of done the hard work of ripping and converting the files for you.
what i liked about the old galaxy note was that i didn't have to convert anything. everything played fine on it. this refresh doesn't support ac3 audio any more. you may be able to get by without conversion if you use mobo, mx, or buy archos player and us the free codec app. i know the archos has played everything so far.

Hi All,
I did a search and can't find an answer.
First off, I'm running stock build JZ054K with stock kernel and modem. I'm rooted and all, just decided to install stock stuff for now. Of course that's 4.1.2.
When I transfer video files to the phone memory or the SD card, I'm having trouble getting them to play back. I've tried MP4, AVI, Wave and have also let the phone convert them as they transfer. The AVI won't play at all, it just says this file won't play. The wave will but has terrible quality. The MP4 is really finicky. Sometimes they will transfer and play part way through, sometimes all the way and sometimes not at all. Could it be the stock video player? I also have MX player but it doesn't seem to do much better. In fact it general does worse.
Should I let the videos convert or should I just transfer them as is. I've even had videos I took with the phone that didn't want to play.
Any ideas?
Thanks.
When transferring files to your phone make sure to not convert... Download (and there are many more apps but my favorites are) MXplayer or DicePlayer and watch the videos through that... Not only are there options within each players settings that allow you to adjust playback options for optimization but then at least you don't have to convert files (a copy of a copy is quite like the original, etc)
