edit found the mobile convertor in it but very limited no options to change res or audio and doesnt seem to work i click next and nothing as though it doesnt see the file types

with core player its very stuttery

cant get this to run
keep getting msvcr71.dll was not found
download the eg fixer to cure it and says it cant be run on a 64 bit system

Didn't have a problem with it myself with vista x64.
I already had the Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime library installed and just used the 32bit version of mediacoder and didn't bother with the 64bit addons. Not having experianced the problem you have, I'm not really in a position to offer much more help than that. Sorry
If you keep having trouble with mediacoder, you could try SUPER. I used to use it, but found its UI a bit of a mess.

I use Visualhub on OSX. It will specifically do H.264 MP4 videos made for iPhone and iPod Touch but you can also specifically set the resolution and the bitrate so you can specifically set for the TP2 screen. I get faster and higher quality video at the iPhone resolution especially since high bitrates choke on the TP2. Couple that with Coreplayer and it's a done deal.

Have you picked your source at the top of the screen?

And put video out onto qtv display. Put video quality on high. Smooth zoom on.
Then try your mp4.
I find it best to convert videos to 320 x 194 or 320 x 176
The best video quality I have downloaded. (Trailers) .m4v but I can’t find any program that converts to that format

Visual hub (http://www.techspansion.com/) has been discontinued (sadly enough), but I use it as well. If you can get a copy somewhere, its really useful and piss easy to use. As an alternative i can also recommend Handbrake (http://handbrake.fr/). Its not as easy to use as Visual Hub, but it also produces great results which work very well with Core Player.

So what you could do is to find a converter from srt to Bitmap (VOBSUB), and then use that instead. Because handbrake is able to 'burn' those into the video.
OR! Use a player that supports subtitles... Is there one for Android that works properly?
total converter can add subtitles but i can't find a good setting for size and quality. i think the resolution being 800x480 but with low bitrate gives bad result. anyone with good settings ?

HandBrake has two methods of subtitle OUTPUT:
• Hard Burn: This means the subtitles are written on top of the image permanently. They cannot be turned on or off like on the DVD.
• Soft Subtitles: This means the subtitles will appear as separate selectable tracks in your output file. With the correct playback software, you’ll be able to enable / disable these subtitles as required.
Please read my quote from the handbrake wiki and stand corrected. The OP wants .srt subtitles in this movie.
So instead of telling people they cannot read please tell us which app can play soft subtitles.
I already thought of the other solution for handbrake, convert the srt's to bitmaps and then hard burn them.
edit: fast google showed you can convert srt to vobsub using SubtitleCreator. Open srt and then save as vobsub. Then use handbrake to convert and add the subtitles to your movie.
As for total converter, I have no idea. Cranking up the bitrate doesn't work? If space is not an issue that is usually the easiest way of getting better image quality.

Yes, and that continues stating that you cannot hard burn srt files. I have tried and it's indeed not possible. When you import a .srt file the 'burned in' option is greyed out.
Come on man, telling others to read while not doing that yourself is kinda awkward
My 'solution' doesn't work either. Guess handbrake cannot load external subtitles perhaps? I'm sure it works from a dvd, but so far external subs have not been burned into my movies.
Something else you might try is to download 'mVideoPlayer' from the market. Apparantly that one should be able to use .srt files.
Gave it a quick test and it seems to be working! So perhaps this is a better option than to hard burn those subs into your movies.

It can embed subtitles, has presets for most devices, unfortunately it doesn't support the native (800*480) resolution of the Desire but being an actively developed (and frequently updated) software I expect it to do so soon.

Most opensource softare is just benefit from free like handbrake. On the other hand, it is difficult to use for beginner, lack support and weak stability. handbrake attend technology and ignore user experience. I consider many other charge program are better than it.

so far the most effective combination that has proved in practice: Rock Player + Video Converter. Unfortunately, both programs must be purchased but the fact that real intelligence work perfectly on dezire HD. I recommend everyone to at least try, as both trials.

RockPlayer does support subtitles (.srt, don't know about .sub) and it works flawlessly. You can choose color and size of the subtitle in the settings.

Convert your video using whichever method you prefer to MP4 / M4V and copy it to your device (I prefer Handbrake).
Either copy your .srt subtitles to the same folder or else mVideoPlayer can search for subtitles for the video and download them - you just choose whether or not to display them.
It works well on my Advent Vega tablet, but I haven't tried the app on my Desire yet as I am waiting for it to come back from repair after a "bouncing down a flight of stairs" incident!

After a very frustrating week of trying to get feature length movies on my desire I have all but given up hope. I am able to convert and copy some movies and get them to run without the dreaded "This video cannot play" error message. Most that do play still play with out of sync sound, if they play at all. Occasionally, one plays correctly but I believe this is more an accident then a cure. I have tried several converters and every conceivable setting. I have come to the conclusion that this is a problem with the phone and most probably with the implementation of the operating system. I have an unbranded Desire that was purchased from an authorized dealer in Hong Kong. I have not attempted to root the phone or modify it in any way.
If anyone has had success at consistently putting feature length movies on their desire please post your methods. I am at the point where I believe this needs to be fixed with and update from HTC. I can only assume that the same problem exits on the Nexus One.

I have tried several converters designed for Nexus One or Desire. They all seem to want to convert to mpeg4. Some of the converters show that they are using an h264 codec. I have tested the converted files on my pc using Media Player Classic then if they run I copy and paste to the phone directory. A few actually work as planned. Most do not. I am converting avi, xvid and divix files that I have downloaded. They work fine on my Windows 7 computer using just about any video player (I have several).
The fact that an occasional feature film converts and works suggests to me that the HTC operating system is buggy. I would love to be proven wrong on this.
Here is a follow-up to my efforts. I actually purchased three converters and also tried some free ones. The converter called Any video converter Professional seems to have the best success rate. I have been using the setup on most of these with profiles for the Nexus One because the Desire is identical (as far as I know) in the video sense. Most of these converters have not yet offered updates to include a profile labeled Desire (but a few have and they are the worst).
I have spent many hours trying to get this to work consistently because I travel a lot and intended to use the phone for videos. I have been able to get as many as two working feature films onto my 16gb Kingston sd card, but adding even one more causes corruption of the entire card. That spells operating system problems to me. I also tried this with the original 4gb sd card with the exact same results. Anyone with consistent success at this please post your methods.
I just put movie 2012 on my phone with sound.. successfully.... MP4 format works great.. I use DVDFAB works great.. i have used it for many years burning movies, and has always worked great for iphone,wm phone and BB now Desire as well.. check it out.. you get a 30day trial then have to buy get lifetime upgrades..

but remember to set the Video Codec to H.264(x264), an opensource codec which works great on Android
also the Target Size should be less than 2GB as Android doesn't play file bigger than 2GB

Putting one feature length film on the sd card often works. It is the act of adding more than one (and always more than two) that causes the problems. When I add the second or third movie I get videos that won't play or corruption of the entire card. I have tried putting them in the same folder and also tried putting them in the root of the card. I started thinking that it was a size limit in the operating system? So to nail this, we would need to successfully put three or more feature length films on the sd card so that they work. I have a 16gb card installed so this is not a memory problem.

but I don't know why the files are corrupting your card, is your card faulty? I'm just guessing
After rather exhaustive experimentation I found the solution to this problem. It has to do with the bps rate. Most conversions programs default to 1200 or 1500bps for their conversion. I know cause I tried most of them. When I set the bps rate to 768 using Any Video Converter Pro the problem is solved. Odd thing is that the phone shows the resulting rate at 888bps for every video I convert at 768bps. No matter, it works. I did try Handbrake but found it to be way too slow. I am using an i7 processor with Windows 7 and I want to be able to use all the available threads for fast conversion. Any Video Converter Pro has an option for that and it works using all 8 threads. This also seems to resolve the video/sound sync problem that I was experiencing with some conversions. Must be a limit with the Android operating system.

Earlier I had this issue with the sound being of low quality (too low a bitrate), but the latest version seems to have fixed this.
I haven't tried feature length but I use handbrake to convert tv eps - edited the iphone profile so that width is set to 800 and height is blank to keep files to the right resolution for the screen (although check your source files, if they are less than 800px width there's no point upscaling them here). I usually then set the target size to 350mb for a tv episode. This gives me decent quality and works well.
For playback I'm using mvideoplayer it's great

All my video is encoded at 320x480 using Handbrakes iPhone profile so that it can be used on my wifes iPod Touch as well as my Desire. Despite the fact that it doesn't use the extra resolution of the Desire, it looks perfectly fine on a small screen using Meridian for playback.

It's got a Desire preset too!
Best thing to use in my experience is winavi to 3gp/mp4 convertor. It converts in no time at all, i tend to convert to 3gp as they take up the least amount of space but quality of playback/sound is still excellent.
I use the aplayer app to play the 3gp file.

Haven't received my Desire yet but tried encoding a few movies. Took about 20 minutes for a 2 hour movie on my quad core PC.

Strange, Miro consistently works for me.
i've never really watched videos on my phones (mostly due to screen size etc) but i figure now that I have the Galaxy Nexus i could watch a few things on it..
What would be the best video format to convert things to? I dropped an avi of a tv program onto it and it worked but it lagged a bit..
I just converted something to an HD mp4 using Permute for Mac, it bumped the filesize up about 100mb but tested it and it runs smooth in QuickPic or PlayerPro but when trying to use the built in video player (to get the true full screen) it plays for a second, stutters, then says it can't be played.. :S
has anyone managed to get moboplayer working ? says i need an arm7 neon codec - found that on their site ... followed instructions but it still wont work
Video playback may be a bit iffy until the apps are updated; one of the Diceplayer mob posted saying that it now supports HD playback for .mkv. They didn't mention .avi but that generally needs less resources than .avi so you could try your avi in Diceplayer.
The general trend in open source video development is towards .mkv, I'm trying that first.
I'd be surprised if much works well right out of the gate. The true beta is when the masses begin tinkering

I've got the same question. And I don't mean what other player can I download to play movies. I mean what format can I encode videos in to get them to play in the native player. I did find the article below. I have tried each of these formats with no luck. Anyone know why Android can't play a movie out of the box?

pretty much if you use a baseline .mp4 format you will be fine
basically:
h.264 video
LC-AAC audio
no CABAC
and you should be fine up to 1080p these settings work on all my android devices
just set mpeg 4 level 4 and it should take care of it by itself

I have tired those settings on several encoders (handbrake, Adobe Media Encoder, Magic DVD ripper) and still no success. What software are you using to encode? and have you tried the movies on the galaxy nexus? Because I have never had a problem on any other Android devices. Just this one.

I appreciate the feedback but I have two problems with this particular advice.
1 - Have you seen the permissions for that player? Why would a video player need access to my "Phone calls - Read phone status and identity" and "Your personal information - Read sensitive log data"? Really?
2 - Why the hell can't this phone play videos out of the box. <rant>I have, as I suspect a lot of us here do, a fair few friends that I would call iPhone fanboys. One of the biggest gripes I always hear about android is that every time you run into a problem on Android is the best answer is to root your phone and install cyanogen, or go get xxxx app and that will take care of it, or you should have bought this phone instead. So I get this phone and think that finally Android is going to hit the main stream and I can't even play a movie. WTF!</rant>
Like I said, I appreciate the feedback but I am still looking for a way to play a video in the default video player.

i use mediacoder to encode videos, cant speak for the GN but ive used it for my xoom, nexus S, desire hd, htc legend and SGS 2 in the past (however SGS2 supported all codecs quite nicely anyway)
according to the android dev site the supported video list hasnt changed so this is quite strange.

FYI...I got my GN SIM free from Phones 4U. It was not easy though. I went in to a few stores before finding one that would sell it to me SIM free. And I think that I happened upon the manager at the store that did sell it to me. What makes it even better is that I am in the UK on business for a few months and so I can get the VAT back on my way out. Which makes it nearly 90 quid cheaper.

Format factory works and it's easy as to use.

as far as video conversion, i take the geeky approach. AviSynth + x264 + neroAacEnc. with proper settings you will get the best results, ever... seriously. if you're scarred of command line, use the MeGUI or Handbrake frontends. same encoders, different approach.

Very true, our device will typically play most formats stock without a complaint. I mostly set this thread in motion for our fellow xda'ers who were having trouble finding options to overcome a single file size limitation without splitting. Your info was spot on my man.. well said!

I don't know off hand that phone in its list has similar resolution with our phone (800x480 I think) but it works without a fuss. It doesn't do batch, only one at a time. I don't know if it's 2 pass or not. My preference is handbrake. If you use something like that, check in the settings that CABAC is off. That is a feature that will make smaller files but it will need more cpu to decode during playback. Off setting has larger file sizes but it's less cpu intensive during playback. I haven't made a comparison between on and off but I don't think off makes the file really huge. If you're doing DVD resolution encodes, dual pass encoding with video bitrate of 2000 is sufficient with no noticeable difference in artifacting from 2500.
Another suggestion is with the video the phone camcorder makes. It's bigger than it needs to be file size wise. Run it through handbrake with default settings, only changing CABAC to off, and perspective (screen) to none. That makes a 1080 2 gig 20 minute video down to about 300mb and I don't see the difference in video quality.

Thanks for this heads up, but I have a question. I was converting a DVD to test this one out, and it seems to work flawlessly so far, but I did notice if I choose to convert to Android 800x480 with the defaults everywhere else, I wind up with files around 1.25GB. Is there a particular set of settings I can use to shrink that size or a way to take the mp4 files and reduce their size? I'm used to mp4s being ~300 - 500MB, so just wondering if there is a way to set it up I'm not seeing.
I use Hand brake without issue on my epic touch. Just throwing out another program for everyone to try.

Welcome! Yeah you can change a few things, the bit rate and format play a lot in the over all file size. Mp4 will compress more as apposed to avi. The ps3 setting is a useful one for that. You can click on each of the presets setting and get an overview of the container/codec/bit rate/frame rate that are being used to give you an idea.

Thanks again. I found in the dialog box that allows me to rename the mp4 I can also limit the maximum size of the file. It automagically changes the bitrate that way, and I have much more manageable files now.
