Hi All,
I did a search and can't find an answer.
First off, I'm running stock build JZ054K with stock kernel and modem. I'm rooted and all, just decided to install stock stuff for now. Of course that's 4.1.2.
When I transfer video files to the phone memory or the SD card, I'm having trouble getting them to play back. I've tried MP4, AVI, Wave and have also let the phone convert them as they transfer. The AVI won't play at all, it just says this file won't play. The wave will but has terrible quality. The MP4 is really finicky. Sometimes they will transfer and play part way through, sometimes all the way and sometimes not at all. Could it be the stock video player? I also have MX player but it doesn't seem to do much better. In fact it general does worse.
Should I let the videos convert or should I just transfer them as is. I've even had videos I took with the phone that didn't want to play.
Any ideas?
Thanks.
When transferring files to your phone make sure to not convert... Download (and there are many more apps but my favorites are) MXplayer or DicePlayer and watch the videos through that... Not only are there options within each players settings that allow you to adjust playback options for optimization but then at least you don't have to convert files (a copy of a copy is quite like the original, etc)

Before I start, let me clarify that this is about playback of stored videos files (avi, mp4, wmv, mov, etc), not recording frame rate or the playback of recorded videos from the phone. Searching yielded hundreds of results, but none of them fit the scope of my question as far as I could tell. If there is something out there, please link and excuse this question.
So, my question and issue is pretty straight forward: whenever I try to play video files I have (IE: downloaded mp4 files), I get really really poor frame rates. Poor meaning 7-13 frames per second.
So the video sucks, and plays in a fairly smooth slow motion. The sound is fine, causing the video to go out of sync, and once the audio timeline ends the video file closes. The built-in player won't even load them, but RockPlayer does. I think I tried xyplayer as well. I figure this is just a codec / software issue, but all lower resolution video files (same format) play fine, so it seems to be unrelated to the applications I'm using. 800x640 video files, no problem; 1280x720 video files, not gonna happen. The videos play fine on a computer, obviously, and my buddy's Windows Phone 7 plays them fine as well (Zune software).
Any ideas?
what bitrate are the videos that skip?
I don't have many on my phone right now, but one of them is 741Kbps, about one third larger than another video that plays perfectly fine, albeit at a lower resolution. Admittedly I know very little about video encoding and all of that.
What rom are you using?
Currently Burnt Droid (1.4), but I've had the same problem on other roms (sense). I recall having this issue on an AOSP rom once, but I can't say that with complete confidence.
Bump; is this really not an issue for people? I can try and grab a sample video if that helps? I figured this would be a more global thing, not just me. The main reason I need (or want) this to work is because all of my online class lectures are recorded in this format and being able to watch the lectures on the go would be extremely beneficial.
I can play a 4gb hd rip of avatar on my phone in rockplayer (hardware mode) with no skipping
please post a link to a vid your having problems with

Hmm, ok, so it took that sentence for me to realize I'm an idiot. I've tried hardware mode with every video file I have put on my phone (avi, mp4, wmv), but wasn't surprised when they didn't play-- if they did, couldn't I just use the stock video player?-- but my school files for example are .mp4, which should play, but I guess the system player doesn't support whatever encoding/bitrate these videos are made with? Does this mean I won't get this to work unless I re-encode / convert the files I have into a new mp4 the phone will support natively?
Excuse my ignorance on the issue; I guess my understanding of the application and android system is more limited than I initially thought.
thanks..and as far as setups go.... I am not running any modifications, roms, roots, flashing or whatever other tricks that most are. My sprint samsung galaxy s epic4g sph-d700 is NOT moified ANY different than the day I purchased it. 100% factory settings, not even an ota upgrade done. As far as what's happening, the music player/ers don't seem to remember some 200 tracks I've been playing since I found my mp3 download capabilities. No files exsist, even after I play them from the file, in which they only exist, through the players their instantly gone once I close the player, although they still remain in the original file they were downloaded to. The media, movie, player is doing the same with the handfull of movies I've installed. My movie player was full , like music players were, yesterday, now "no files exist", says the according app. To add all of my camera pics and image downloads are wiped clean from the gallery. If I snap a new pic it will show up in the gallery, until I close it. When I return their gone, but again still exist in its folder. I don't get it and need a bit of advise on my next move to fix. Thanks people. I hope I've explained my issue good enough for diagnosis.

Back up everything on your sd card and format the card. See if that helps

interesting problem u have there.....I would try to back up all the music and format the sd card, then try it again if that fails then I would reccommend using a friends sd card to make sure its ur epics software and not the sd card. Also if u want to try a great music player app, winamp is free and works very nicely. Good luck I hope everything works out for u.

Hey guys,
I recently bought my HOX and I love it !!
I have one little question. I Own a iconiaTab A510 which is on tegra3 and ICS as well. When i try to play avi file (3-10Mo) from dropbox app on my tab they just play fine. But on my HOX it just doesn't work. I tried mxplayer, vlc, vplayer but none of them worked ! Do you have any idea why ??
dropbox app v 2.1.10 on both
I don't think it's related to the Dropbox app, since once the file is downloaded, it's job is done and another app is called to handle the file. What software are you using? MX Player works flawlessly here, both with SD and HD videos.
Hi,
With latest dropbox app, you don't need to download files anymore, you can play them in streaming. If I download my video, you're right, mxplayer works fine. Unless the streaming feature only works on tablet...

I will try to upload a video and stream it, though my Dropbox always uploads unbelievably slow, so it might take a while...
EDIT: I have tried several mp4, 3gp and avi files, and all streamed well (a bit slowly, but I could get the to play after a bit of buffering) except for the avi ones. I'm pretty sure it's because of the dropbox app, because if you click Export -> Save to SD Card and play it from there it works just fine. I also have a 720p mkv file uploading now, but I couldn't find a smaller one around, so it might take a while, and I expect the result is just as it is with the avi file. I'll update if I find anything more.
EDIT 2: Just as I thought, the mkv file refuses to stream, but will play just fine if downloaded first. So it looks like you'll have to store your videos locally while you watch them, or find some other way of streaming them
Ok, you're right...if you do export>mxplayer it works after a bit of buffering...but if you just click on your video and select mxplayer, it doesn't play...which is weird because my A510 does play the video this way without buffering...anyway thanks for your help

ok, i really have the lg optimus L9 from tmobile. but no forum yet for the L9 so here i am. just got the phone and am new to andriod, have ice cream.
just want to play a frickin mp3 and avi files that are on the sd card. if i use file manager and naviagate to avi video, i see a small thumbnail. but when i try to click it i get 'try again after scanning media file'. no idea how to scan media files. navigate to mp3 and click get a choice of google play music or music player. music player gives me again "try again after scanning media files'. now all of a sudden the google media works for my mp3 - no idea why.
guess i am trying to understand how to scan media files. and which program will use the library, google play music or music player. and how can i play video. i am ok with even purchasing a player as i really like to play just about any format without having to convert. what is the player out there that will play the most formats?
thanks
For media searching use the SD Sync app from market. Works well.
where is the best place to go to download apps?
Google Play ofcourse
ok. guess i am trying to figure for now
1) if i copy a media file to my storage card, how can i play it right away, without having to update my whole library. i want to download, point an applicaiton to it an play it.
2) what is the video player that can play the most formats?
1)Open the file with file manager. I prefer the root explorer.
2)LG stock player supports everything, at least no problems even with .mkv packed files.
Oh, you got the L9. Not sure about yours but must be same i think
Also if the file was downloaded from web, you can select/open in directly in the download manager.
Just Figured this out M'Self
OK, just had same issue (same 'system message') trying to watch videos using the built-in Video Player. Maybe it was the first time I used it, but I was actually trying to figure out how to use the new 'Q-Slide' feature to watch a video while doing something else on the phone.
I actually pulled up the manual PDF (downloaded from LG, here), then <CTRL+F> (searched the document for similar system mssgs), and got a 'hit' on Page 49 of the OEM manual (my search, BTW, was 'media files'--'scan for' never found it).
You have to let the system do this for the 'FileShare' app also (I'm sure it's about 'indexing'), so I did, and it worked.
Not so much a 'system error', as a little 'systemic quirk' (much like a cosmic queef)
See attached JPG.
so i am wondering if it's my SD card, but it should be a good quality sony one. anyways. I am trying to play either a 720 or 1080 video file and at least in the stock video app the phone studders/stops and it can't keep up. anyone else have this issue?
Is it uhd card?
What type of HD video is it (what container does it use)?
Have you checked for an excess of processes running in backround eating resources?
Have you tried running from the device storage? If so does it work?

OK well it could be so many different things...
Just to clarification UHD card is needed to record in full HD and certain other modes (I believe it is required to use the full HD settings and should automatically detect if it is, and not allow you to choose certain settings if it is not). Obviously if you can record in full hd should have no issue viewing in full hd. Again I am not 100% sure about that, I believe I read something about that in documentation, but I may be confusing that with something else. So you may want to do some research on it yourself.
I have no issues playing x264 1080p movies from device, currently I don't have a SD card installed. they play fine in stock player (except some of the videos I have the audio stream isn't supported by stock video player but plays video stream fine) but I use MX or xbmc I prefer those players.

so i copied some files to the phones storage, and the issue's still happening. files that played fine on my note 2 do it as well too. if i just tape the screen while the video's playing it unfreezes the video (while audio playing) it still happening . haven't tried another video player app yet, just stock.
urgggghh. but watching video on the phone while flying this week has been incredible.
Are u sure the video files are ok?
Did you checksum files after xfering or moving files?
You sure it has nothing to do with the settings on your phone, running apps, system resources or lack thereof? Maybe they were encoded with abnormal settings, causing higher player resources.
Other than that there is really nothing else I can think of atm to help you out sorry.
I have not had any issues watching Full HD mkv's on stock player, MX Player, or XBMC/KODI. From device storage, sdcard, or network.
