Okay, so currently my epic is on BML, and I've been considering switching to MTD. I'm using the Legendary Era ROM and Seppeku Kernel, and I'm loving my phone so far and don't really want to change anything. But, MTD does look very promising, aswell as the new update, plus I'm getting sick of my phone bugging me to update.
So, my question is... How can I convert my current ROM backup to MTD? I know there are links to switching to MTD, and I plan on using those but I just want to make sure I've got my backup switched over to MTD aswell, so I don't lose it. But I've got TB pro, so I'm not TOO worried about it.
Umm, one more thing... If I upgrade to EL30, will I have to re-root? Also, will the process be the same and will I be able to restore my old backup?

Yes if you upgrade you will have to reroot... you can't update unless you go back though because you can't update while running a custom rom... if you wanna just keep your current setup for now until legendary updates to mtd but wanna stop the update message then just press install now... it will fail... pull battery and reboot... hope this helps you out... also the threads that you were refering to teach you how to convert your backup... pretty much just renaming files... ext4/rfs to yaffs2...
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
El30 would not be a good replacement for your current setup. Its still missing most of the tweaks and hacks.
If you are just tired of the update bugging you then let it try and update. It will fail and you can pull the battery. When you reboot there will be no more prompting.
Legendary doesn't have an mtd version and while its possible to convert it I wouldn't recommend it to anyone unless they are comfortable finding all the into on their own. If you really want mtd the best is just switch to the latest cm7 nightly and start from scratch. You will have no shortage of things to feed that flashing addiction the
I loved the LegendaryRom 2.2 myself and that was what I was using for awhile. MTD is the bomb though, and if you want to switch now, I would recommend MarcusantROM v3 MTD. Otherwise just stay on Legendary until version 2.3 comes out and is available in MTD. Also, a lot of people have had problems with the EL30 modem, so I would just stay on EI22 for now. If the modem ended up not working for you very good, then you would have to ODIN back to EC05, then upgrade back to EI22. Save yourself the time.

Thanks for all the helpful replies guys, much appreciated c:
Okay... so, I know if I want to convert my legendary backup to MTD I'd have to go out and figure out how to do so myself. I don't have a problem doing so, it would be a learning process for me and I don't mind learning more. That being said, do you think it's worth it? I'd like to give marcusant's rom a go, but that being said i'd like to be able to switch back to my legendary rom if needed. So before all, i'd like to switch my legendary backup from BML to MTD first.
So, for those of you on MTD, what are some of the pro's you've noticed so far? Any cons? And yes, I've read up on the MTD thread, but i'd like to hear some opinions on this. That being said, I might just end up switching to MTD tonight.
And about EL30, I guess I'll wait until Legendary supports it. Samurai already supports EL30 though, correct?

I'm on an MTD Epic, running Marcusant's ROM Revival V3 w/ Shadow Kernel for TW v.04 kernel. Let me just start by saying that I was on the verge of switching to the Epic Touch, but thanks to this forums Devs dedication and hard work, this ROM,kernel and, E22 ICS theme have brought new life to my device. I've noticed better battery life and responsiveness on MTD. Just IMO this has been the best thing to happen to the Epic 4g since Ext4. Sorry for describing everything I have running...it's just THAT good lol. Try it out, you can always ODIN back to BML.

Hmmm... so that being said, I think I want to convert my ROM backup to MTD and check out the marcusant rom. My legendary rom, once converted to MTD will still work properly though while I'm on MTD right?
Sent from the one and only Legendary Samurai ;]
Most definitely. As long as the Dev has worked out everything properly, you showed be fine once it's converted. Just make sure to follow all procedures as usual and if the Dev makes the ROM possible to auto-switch to MTD then your good to go. If you have to switch to MTD yourself and then flash the ROM, look around the Development forum to find your answer. For a fact MarcusantROM Revival takes care of all that for you. You can always flash that ROM to convert and re-flash the MTD ROM of your choice. Good luck!!

Absolutely! I have been running RC 2.1 on MTD since MTD conversion procedure came out. Just remember to change themes you have to mount system in CWM just before flashing, then unmount before rebooting. Other than that the only thing you'll notice is all the extra app space and stability!

So after trying to go to EB13 with the samsung tool i still get the internal error when trying the update.
before heading over to sprint i was going to try flashing a custom rom. my question is normally are you able to update prl with custom roms?
2nd question, i'm looking for a stable rom that has good battery life, will syndicate frozen be a good choice with the 1ghz undervolt?
Thank you!

Yes, you can update your prl with a custom rom. I just install the sprintzone.apk after flashing.
I use bonsai and love it but many people swear by acs frozen. The best part of bonsai is the backup feature, but since you're comings from 2.1 a fresh install is necessary anyway. Take your time and read read read before flashing a custom rom. Also, be sure to check out lostandtired.com as I'm sure you'll need to get the sprintzone edified app on the right side of the main page for your prl and he does the midnight rom to spread autism awareness and is a really good dude. He also has some videos that will show you the basics.
Whew... my thumbs are tired.

Hey guys, I've been running into a ton of issues. Basically, all I want to do is get to the point where I can flash custom ROM's onto my Samsung Epic 4G. I am on Stock Froyo EC05 Rooted and have ClockWorkMod 2.5.1.0! I understand that the best way to go about things is to first update the Clockworkmod to 3.1.x.x but what is an easy way to do this from 2.5.1.0? Do I have to go through the entire root process again just to update clockwork or do I have to remove my root entirely and start from scratch? What's the best way to go about this and how do you do it?
Hope to hear what you guys think.

As for custom roms just go into development and pick on that you think you'll like read the included list and pick from that. Id suggest checking out legendary 2.2 as a starting point if you don't like the theme you can always flash one. As for a custom kernel check out the samurai kernel from earthbound. Make sure you get the TW.BML version not mtd.

Yeah, I've checked out a few Rom's and I know what I'm looking for, I just want that ClockworkMod updated. Also, for custom ROM's, is it better to have the EXT4 filesystem instead of RFS? which clockwork version will automatically covert it to EXT4?

The ROM does the conversion.... and EXT4 is for speed but RFS is more for reliablity not to say the ext4 isn't safe but its not as reliable as RFS. But it safe to use but I know very few people losing data because of undervolting but that was the only thing that caused it. However you need rfs then I can give you the zip to flash and convert it.

Rfs, because its still considered more stable. Ext4 still has stability issues, although considered faster.

Ok. Also, I made a complete backup with Mybackup Pro to my SD card and it works great! However, would it still restore everything If I'm on a different filesystem? I was also wonderung, since I'm on stock froyo, are you sure I can upgrade CWM 2.5.1.0 straight to 5.x.x.x? I heard there might be some issues with that.
Another thing, What ROM do you recommend to be the best. I do want certain features and was looking at the CleanGB and the Legendary ROMS. I basically want one that is fast, barely any bloatware, has the 3d app drawer, and the CRT animation. I also want it to have loopback so I could put Backtrack 5 on my phone just in case I need to use it.
Recovery is independent of the software version. I had cwm 5 on froyo before.

Legendary is faster cleangb is stock really and is on rfs..... and ur fine just flashing my upload... as for the apps don't use that for your apps bringing over apps from different roms escpecially froyo to gb is dangerous and I recomend you just download the apps again from the market. Your not supposed to restore nandroids of bml on an mtd clockworkmod
I'm guessing you where on era's legendary rom? That's bml partition cm9 is on mtd partition that's why this happened.
You'll need to repartition and odin stock ec05 or el30 if you need el30 it can be found by toadlife if you need stock ec05 that's in the android development stickies at the top named "bring an epic back from the brink"

I have the old epic 4g with the slide out keyboard

I want to update to stock 2.3 as I think its available (or is that the other epic 4g again?) and then go about picking a new rom to use
I cant remember if I have to convert back to rfs before using odin, or can I just get a 2.3 stock ext4 rom with cwm or bonsai whatever is used now
I have been away from the forums for a few months and I am way behind - like I said I spent like 2-3 days so far searching and reading all sorts of crap that wasnt helpful or got me confused so I am coming here for help
what do I do first?
Sounds like you should be able to flash the new CWM 5.0.2.7 which can be found in the Roll up sticky in the top of Development and then flash an EL30 or FC09 ROM. You will also have to look into whether you want to switch to MTD (non samsung partition gives you more app space) or stick to BML. You may want to try Sleeper which detects your file system and keeps it. CleanGB and The People's ROM are good choices too. Or you may want to brave new frontiers altogether and choose an AOSP ROM based on ICS like CM9 or AOKP. You might want to take it slow and just update to a Touchwiz ROM for now. The People's ROM is very Bonsai-ish.

And of course backup 2 ways before flashing anything. Use Titanium Backup and make a nandroid backup.

first is odin still used, I dont see much mentioning it anymore other then for CWM - some roms were odin files that did everything for you all at once
I think I have CWM on there also but at the time I needed bonsai (I think thats the name) to flash the midnightrom 5.5 so I installed that, if I can have both at the same time then I have both, if not then can I just install CWM5 the normal way or do I have to go back to stock first
probably going to do the CM9 rom I am using midnightrom and it was one of the best when it was new but the developer has sick kids and cant really keep up which makes sense so I want a new one and I dont want unstable roms - so most of what I have read has said that CM9 is really good and its ICS so thats cool I am still on 2.2 now
I dont need to backup anything other then sms which I have already so thats no problem all the apps I will just reinstall anyways and google backups my contacts
I really dont care if I start from scratch and I would prefer to wipe everything and start over because in the past with roms on other phones and this one updating wasnt as good as a new install so I will probably go that route
not sure about the MTD/BML I will have to look into that but I am running ext4 now journaling on so I assume I have to change the format back to rfs before messing with that
No one is making odin ROM tars anymore because there is a general dislike of Odin. You can flash the CWM 5.027, then 3 finger into, wipe data, cache and dalvik the flash CM9 and the immediately flash the gapps which is the google apps for things like the market (Play store now), Gmail and other stuff. Odin whichever modem you like at anytime.

Well there are some flashable deltas that can get you from EC05 to EI22, then from there to EL30, then another to get you to FC09. Some have had unreliable results on the last one. It is easier to just Odin the one you want.

well thanks for the help I have installed CM9 and I am happy with it
I have some questions or comments about it so I will post them in the CM9 topic
First, Merry Christmas!
So here is my situation. I planned to give my sister my old Samsung Epic for Christmas. I put CM10 on it, threw in a new battery and watched her unwrap it. She was happy. Unfortunately, I discovered that you cannot activate a CM10 modded phone on Sprint, so I need to flash a stock ROM. I have never done this before, and it's been a while since I messed with Android and since she leaves the state in a few days, I need to do this quickly. I hope you can bear with my possibly silly questions so I can get this done ASAP!
1) I have seen the ROM listed here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=12755712 recommended. I plan to use this. Any issues?
2) I understand this will revert the file system back to RFS. Will I be able to restore my CM10 nandroid, or will I need to re-run the CM10 flash from scratch in order to reformat?
3) Are any of my assumptions incorrect?
Normally I would research the hell out of this rather than ask for help, but under the circumstances, I am in a bit of bind time-wise.
Thanks!
1. EC05 too old. Get FC09 tar here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1592994
2. Yes, you have to flash CM10 to convert to MTD in order to restore nandroids of the format. Don't forget to wipe /system if you ever wanna flash a CM10 package, or you'll have to pull the battery...
3. IDK, I'm in China and have no knowledge of carriers

Just flash a stock based mtd ROM like the peoples ROM mtd. Activate and then flash back or restore back to cyanogen. I've heard that some people have issues flashing back to another ROM from cm10 because of the partition resizing. But I've jumped back to cm9 which should have been an issue, but was not. Give it a try after a backup. Worst case you have to Odin back to stock like originally planned.

As suggested you can just flash a Touchwiz MTD ROM like The People's ROM. Activate then restore your CM10 nandroid or wipe data in CWM and flash back to CM10 after.

Or just stay on TPR and enjoy the succulent battery life
I've done the multi boot method where you boot off the sd card. It works great and is a lot faster than I thought it would be. You keep your cm10 system exactly as it is. You also can leave the OS files on your sd card and install the zip from recovery any time you need to update the prl or adjust radio settings.
