If you're using a generic extended battery that is most likely the problem, as I believe the antenna for the NFC functionality is located in the battery. If you are using the correct battery then it is quite possible that the dev of that particular ROM may not have it functional yet.
I use NFC all the time, alot more than I expected because of Wallet. Alot more places take it than you think and being able to add money to a prepaid card is cool too.

Thought it could be used here, haven't people been using NFC at McDonalds. A few years ago there was a huge trial of NFC in London. I'm sure the stuff is still in place there. (I have GWallet on My nexus here in the UK but never used it)
There's a large scale trial in Nice (France) where I live, and they sell NFC phones (a modified Galaxy S II among others) with the ability to add your credit card, pay your bus fare with your phone bill, know exactly when the next bus arrives by tapping your phone on the NFC tag at your stop, or learn stuff about monuments and landmarks by tapping your phone on a NFC tag placed on a glass pane. Pretty cool stuff!

Nice video! I used mine the first time the other day at a 7-11. I was concerned because I had put the new extended battery in and my OtterBox case on. Worked like a champ. I really like being able to pay that way. I recommend downloading the PayPass Locator app from the market to help find locations.
Two questions though, at Home Depot when it said to show your card what did the cashier do? Also, did you hit cancel when it said to enter the pin and run it as credit?

I had to explain to her that there was no physical card to show. I explained to her how NFC works and she still wasn't buying it lol. So I had to open up the Wallet app and show her the picture of the virtual card to further explain it. Finally she understood (somewhat) and let it go through....the funny thing was it was only a 34 cent purchase! lmao.

Anyone use nfc? I still have yet to find a use for it. If you use it then what do you do with it. If you don't then do you feel it is useless?
at least we have it... some dont

Yeah, for now it's pretty useless in the U.S. Other countries are using it though, we have just fallen behind as far as NFC goes.
NFC doesn't seem to work with CM7 on my phone, it just straight doesn't turn on. I haven't seen it in the list of "not working" stuff in the threads, but I'm not sure what I'd do with it yet, so I'm not too worried
I use it, I bought my own programmable tags from tagsfordroid.com , I have one stuck in my car mount so as soon as I put it in the car mount, it goes to driving mode , turns wifi off and bluetooth on ...
I made another so as soon as I get home it is right next to my desk, so it turns wifi on connects , turns bluetooth off .
Yeah these are mundane uses but until we get google wallet or something like it, real world uses are slim to none ...

I've been playing with it also with simple routine stuff like this. As soon as I get more tags i'm going to make some for checkins at my favorite hangouts... etc. But to date the most useful tasks I use NFC are checking the balance on my Clipper Card and Door entry access.
I've been trying the ports of CM7 but as soon as I've checked it out I bounce back to a backup because it won't work under CM7 and I need that door entry access.
Cheers

It's a shame so many people think NFC is "useless" - they don't see the potential it holds. If the iPhone5 comes with NFC I guarantee we'll see real-world adoption very quickly.
I wrote a really big blog post on my personal blog about the potential of NFC.
There's also some great demos showing what it can be used for on this Google I/O talk.
Buy some blank NFC tags and let your imagination guide you.

Worst part is iphone users will act like apple pioneered and invented NFC.
I disagree. I think you will see a lot of the users of older iPhones will upgrade and if NFC is incorporated into the phone those pesky Apple Fanboys you love to deride will be advocates for the cause. The monolithic platform will work in it's favor unlike Android phones that have NFC built in and functional but crippled because the platform is fragmented by the carriers. All those users coming online at once will be what gets us to critical mass... but I doubt they will claim it as an apple discovery.

Use it. That's about it. To be honest though, there really isn't a big demand for the technology at the moment. Few people have devices that can use the technology, and fewer still actually bother with it even if they have a capable device. The physical wallet isn't going anywhere anytime soon because it contains many things that your phone probably won't be privy to for a long time. Why bother with Google Wallet when you can just as easily pull out the credit card that your google wallet uses anyway, and not have to worry about whether or not the place you're at has NFC support?
I would LOVE for Google Wallet to catch on (and get a few more features <.<; ) and I think it will-- in a few years. For now, however, Google Wallet hasn't really proven itself to businesses and the average user as anything more than a gimmick.
I won't even bother using it until I can link it to my debit card.
More and more places accept paypass all the time. Google wallet isn't the only thing that uses it btw. I've never had an issue with a paypass machine myself.
I FINALLY found a place in my town where it works. It was a McDonalds, heh. Too bad I almost never go to McDonalds....

The feature I like the best is that it's not linked to my atm/debit card or my personal credit cards. That its only linked to the Google card and I have to put money into it makes me feel very safe and secure. I would have never activated Google wallet if it linked to my personal banking and credit info. This is by far the safest rout.

Linking it to debit would help acceptance a lot I think. And perhaps digital ids but that may be a ways off unless governments step in and push that. But as is, it is probably too easy to hack, fake or manipulate digital ids. But it would be sooooo freaking awesome to get other cards working with this tech. Car insurance, health insurance, club, grocery store cards/ids. A true digital wallet would be awesome. Would have to get a leather case for my nexus then.

That's probably another "issue". If iPhone doesn't have it is no good or not cool.

Basically companies have to pay for the machines that they use to accept credit cards etc. The only way for this to get HUGE and FAST is for Google to become contracted with certain businesses to provide them with these PayPass scanners, even if they have to produce their own Google Branded versions. This way they have control and can distribute them. Otherwise ATM we are stuck with places that have the PayPass machines. Most companies go cheap and get those ugly looking grey plastic card machines that aren't very advanced, just for the fact they are cheap. Google will have to make the move though, businesses will not pay the dough to switch to these machines.

McD's, 7-11, CVS and even Whole Foods. There's an app for MC Paypass locations and I've found everywhere that's on the list generally accepts them. I have to agree with it being limited. Google Wallet needs to stop treating this like a hobby and add cards other than Citibank. GW needs to mature a lot before ISIS or even Apple arrives on the scene.

clearly you aren't on food stamps or you would know how to work those angles. Lol.
And, I was being sarcastic about everything I said. just to make sure everyone knows. But you can bet that someone will figure out how to link their food stamps to this. Here in Illinois food stamps are on a debit card called "Illinois link". And like most states, there are people who use them that know how to work the system to get all sorts of crazy stuff.
This morning I was at the gas station behind a guy who used his link to buy candy and soda not just for him but for his buddy too. Wearing 200 Jordans, gold chains, about 250 worth of clothes on, a gold grill, and diamonds in his ears. Talking on an iphone 4 the whole time. Then watched him get into his relatively new Lincoln Navigator with 20+" wheels. Then I had the privilege of following him on my way to work. His stereo booming the two blocks until he pulled into the govt housing authority homes, where I wouldn't be surprised if he lived.
So...I guess that probably contributed to my sarcasm this morning.

I hear ya. I used to live directly across from govt projects. I would always see aarons and rent a center trucks there dropping off big screen TV's. I even see several 50"+ televisions on the trash curb. Aside from that it wasn't a horrible place to live. if you don't mind loud music, large groups of 50+ people fighting with everything from broom sticks to tire irons, and weekly shootings that is.
But yeah. My sister is a cashier @ Walmart a and says a large portion of the people are rude. I've seen it myself standing in line behind many of them.
And don't get me wrong. A good deal of those people are in legitimate need of assistance. They are grateful for the help and do what they can to become self sufficient as time goes on.
But a significant portion of the people are not deserving, are rude, dishonest, and generally don't deserve anything they get.
and as for the comment about how putting food stamps on these devices would probably drive Google wallet. It probably would. And even though it is only on high end phones, you can bet your bottom dollar that a lot of people on welfare have high end phones.

Just how we used to attach things to Palm/PalmOne devices back in the day. I mean you know Apple didn't actually invent the smart phone or anything. I have always owned and loved android devices since the g1. I always got carrier branded devices and switch every so often. I thought it would make sense to grab a gsm nexus so I started researching, and boy did I research. I thought that the price of a gnex from google is not bad and i had enought money to get one, but for whatever reason i figured i'd check ebay, but they sell for the same or more used. so I checked craigslist- on payday i saw what looked like a great deal... new gnex with extra battery 300, so i contacted the dude and met up about 40 minutes drive. the phone was in new condition there was the extra battery and vanilla ics, tried it made a call so i took it. while driving away i started playing with it.. i went to the camera app, got a message stating to insert sd card, i was like wth a gnex with an sd card. then i got a call the there was a flashing led at the bottom. i got home and examined it well, turns out its a fake ( my fingernail can operate the capacitve sereen) it looks so damn real... now im screwed out of 300 bux. I was so upset i went to google and got a new one, so I should have it soon... learnt my lesson well.- i really didnt think that fake phones existed and damn they did a great job... i think ill just give it to my son- he will by happy to have it

Yeah that's a fake. The site even looks like amazon, with the way it's laid out and even some of the graphics.
This is why I like buying things eBay over CraigsList. eBay has gone to great lengths to protect buyers. With that being said it is such a pain any more to sell things on eBay (major hassle listing/shipping items, excessive fees, picky buyers) which is why I usually won't sell things on eBay any more.
In your case though you got a fake phone, which may have been hard to tell when you bought it but hypothetically if it were a Verizon phone for example it could have been completely real but may have been stolen and had a bad ESN. Even then though I believe you can check with the carrier to see if the ESN is clean. I guess what it boils down to is you just have to be very cautious whenever buying something from an 'un-trusted' source.
On a side note, I just received my Verizon Nexus that I bought on eBay for $240. This thing was listed at 'Used' but it is seriously in like new condition, not a scratch or scuff on it (and it came with a nice case). I am absolutely loving the phone so far. Only thing I don't like is that I didn't upgrade to it sooner.

I'll just get a simple mobile sim and give it to my kid, so its not a total loss, he will be happy with it. I'm just amazed of what a good job they did with it. and the fingernail test is how I narrowed it down - compared it to my girl's SG2. Im getting withdrawals waiting for the real phone to ship from google.

Pictures! Please!? I'm dying to see the fake. :silly: :cyclops:
I wouldn't say he was careless. How many people have reported purchasing a FAKE Galaxy Nexus. I personally didn't even know they existed. I'm sure this could happen more than we like to think. Know we know to be even more careful.

Thinking of getting some tectiles and wanted to know you guys experiences with them?

It was cool, but I dont really use them like I hoped I would
I got a set but I've only played with them. It's a neat novelty but at the cost not really practical. If they were cents each rather than dollars I might use them more.
Just register your phone on Samsung.com and you'll get a 50% off coupon...buy your TecTiles with that. I have mine by the door to toggle WiFi, in the bathroom to launch Play Music, and by the toilet to launch YouTube.
I use mine a lot, but my only gripe is that the phone has to be on and unlocked in order for it to work...but its better than nothing I guess.
I have thought about putting one in the living room for guests to use to connect to WiFi without asking for the password.

There.....Meh....
I got them for 50% off, so the price was more of a non point for me. Honestly though, I've only used one of them and then sort of forgot about them. They're nothing you can't just do as well on the phone itself. Fun to show off for a second I guess.
I got 10 of them off eBay for under 11bucks but only found my self using 3 of them lol they cool to play with but i hardly find my self using it everyday lol

the way you set up yours are exactly the reasons why I didn't get any. couldn't think of any legitimate uses for them.

How is that not legitimate? Oh that's right, that is simply an opinion. Luckily, I live in America, and I am free to choose what is legitimate for my needs. I guess you missed the connect to WiFi without having to scrummage through to find the password.
What are your expectations? You want it to brew, make, and deliver your coffee to you in the morning?

woah buddy, lighten up, lol. of course that was "an opinion", and mine obviously. sorry that I think having an NFC tag setup to launch YT when I'm taking dump is ridiculous. if you don't want conversations that are inherently going to have opinions, and possibly opinions that are not yours, don't post in a public forum, maybe?

and while that sounds great, NFC is not ubiquitious enough to make that worthwhile. in my opinion.

no... just want to it things I would expect a phone to do. I'm not even sure how that statement is a "witty comeback", as it's contextually nonsense.
seriously, relax.
Not ubiquitous because people like you keep saying it isn't. Buy it, try it out...you may find something interesting that will intrigue another to do the same. My local mall uses NFC to give out free songs or magazine articles. What's a couple of bucks gonna hurt? You already bought a $300+ phone...might as well use its features.
You don't have to use the Samsung TecTiles...you can buy any of them, and download an NFC programmable app.

lol, fair enough, actually.
believe me, I wish I could think of uses for them that would do something I thought was functional, because gawdamn, the idea is cool. and I do love anything new tech-wise. i'm always an early adopter.
(and I bought the phone outright. $700 bucks w/ tax. worth every damn penny.)
so far, the only implementation I am seeing make NFC worthwhile is sBeam/filesharing, and google wallet (if it worked right now).
I will be keeping a watch on the tech, and I tend to make frivolous purchases (like the AllShare TV dongle), and perhaps I'll keep an eye on you, see if you come up with anything that sparks some ideas.
Anything useful for my personal routine (turning off ringer at work etc.) I have set up in tasker. For little stuff like opening you tube while on toilet, (lol) it just doesnt seem more convienent to tap phone to a tag than to click the app on my homescreen. Tasker really does all of the automation for me for work, my car etc.

A sprint tech said it (Google Wallet) should come in January, so add 4 months to that.

Jelly Bomb has nfc with the screen off built in. I tried pulling the Nfc.apk from the 10.20 build and putting it on my own deodexed LJC rom but it didn't allow nfc with the screen off.
One thing that I thought would be useful is if I could set it up as a proximity sensor. Ex: when I put the phone in my car dock it turns on blue tooth and when I take it out it turns it off without having to touch another tag?

It does with a little tweaking. It took me a little while to get working correctly but there is a how to thread floating around here.

That is the one I use. You can setup toggles with only one nfc label. For example. Scan it and it will turn off the alarm. And if you scan it again it will turn it on. It really expand the uses of the labels. And you can program e series of actions with it. Hope this help you

We got some demos (and extra for us) at work, it's a tectile arm band, but I could fully program it and everything, my co-worker thought it was cool since he couldn't do it (lol iPhone) so I was thinking about keeping one, never know when I could wanna "wow" a friend

yes, just set it up to Toggle the bluetooth - that way if it's on it will turn off and visa versa.
I have similar setups and it works like a charm.
and the tiles will work with Every phone that has NFC, so even when you get a future phone, the tiles will continue to work. I think they are the bees knees.
they become more useful once you mod the phone to work with nfc screen off (someone posted a mod but it only works from lockscreen not screen off hopefully that will be fixed soon)
I have one each on my washer and dryer. they set a "timer" that goes off and tells me when the washer and dryer are done (30 minutes for washer 70minutes for dryer)
I have one on my car to auto set my car locator position one the dev for car locator gets that working right.
I also plan to use them for geo caching. I hope geocaching.com integrates NFC functionality into their service soon is VERY ideal for that.
I also plan to use them on "bins" in storage. I store what is in the bin in the tag. tap and now I know whats inside (working on that soon)
you can use QR codes but they are a pain (have to load an app) and then wait for camera to focus AND they don't like low light. NFC don't care tap done.
also plan to put on on my Radio Transmitter for my competition rocket gliders. tap and 15minute countdown timer starts.
