Does the e4gt have nfc hardware inside?

I have been trying to find out if it has nfc. Some sites say yes others say no and some say it has the hardware but sprint disabled it because they want us to use their mobile payment instead. So can anyone clarify this for me...
Might need too return this phone if when ics drops I can't use android beam

The other US versions of the SGS2 have NFC, not our E4GT.
On those phones the NFC antenna is in the battery. The rest of the hardware is in the phone itself, so we can't get NFC by simply swapping batteries.
I was pretty disappointed by this since Sprint is a Google Wallet partner and all.

It's all over my area. Could have used it a lot christmas shopping.
This sucks, I thought the sgII had one but i guess the sprint version doesn't.
Didn't know that...

soon there will also be nfc enabled sd cards like the wifi sd cards for dslrs

I'm used to seeing the 'Express Pass' stuff almost everywhere, but this was the first time I saw the Google Wallet ones.
I can't post links, but wikipedia google wallet and go to the partners section...
these places are indeed 'all over' where I live.

Until Mastercard makes it "standard" for all of their customers, its still just a "fad", at least around here, at this point

I'm more worried that android beam uses nfc and its a huge part of ics. If you guys aren't sure what I'm talking about I believe there is a youtube video. With nfc and android beam you can seamlessly send maps and directions, website links and a bunch of other cool stuff between two different phones

I think NFC will be nice in one regard - electronic receipts. I hate dealing with paper receipts. When I use Wells Fargo ATMs I can have the receipt emailed to me, which is awesome.
Having electronic receipts tied to NFC payments will be great.
I look forward to progress with NFC in 2012.
Too bad the Epic Touch 4G doesn't have it built in, but perhaps there will be an add-on solution like the microSD card as someone mentioned.

If they were smart they'd create a system where you can pay via NFC and have the receipt emailed to you.

Yeah, I would like to have NFC just as much as the next guy, but it'll have to be in my next phone. And let's face it, until the iphone adds NFC, retailers won't pick it up nationwide.

NFC everywhere?
Even if it is everywhere it isn't used much yet. The store employees probably don't know how to use it. Give it time. I am sure when it get more common every smart phone will have NFC. The better question isn't when is our phone getting it, it is when will vending machines get it? No more scratching up change at work for a pop would be awesome.

Yeah, for now it's pretty useless in the U.S. Other countries are using it though, we have just fallen behind as far as NFC goes.

NFC doesn't seem to work with CM7 on my phone, it just straight doesn't turn on. I haven't seen it in the list of "not working" stuff in the threads, but I'm not sure what I'd do with it yet, so I'm not too worried

I use it, I bought my own programmable tags from tagsfordroid.com , I have one stuck in my car mount so as soon as I put it in the car mount, it goes to driving mode , turns wifi off and bluetooth on ...
I made another so as soon as I get home it is right next to my desk, so it turns wifi on connects , turns bluetooth off .

I've been playing with it also with simple routine stuff like this. As soon as I get more tags i'm going to make some for checkins at my favorite hangouts... etc. But to date the most useful tasks I use NFC are checking the balance on my Clipper Card and Door entry access.
I've been trying the ports of CM7 but as soon as I've checked it out I bounce back to a backup because it won't work under CM7 and I need that door entry access.

that´s not right, in the us you can already pay at Mc Donalds with nfc (Nexus S 4g). For example in Germany, we don´t even have nfc phones.

It's a shame so many people think NFC is "useless" - they don't see the potential it holds. If the iPhone5 comes with NFC I guarantee we'll see real-world adoption very quickly.

Buy some blank NFC tags and let your imagination guide you.

It pains me to agree that if the next iphone (iphone 6? iphone 4sx?) has NFC that it'd become more mainstream. To be honest if I say that my phone is capable of nfc noone knows what the hell I'm talking about

Worst part is iphone users will act like apple pioneered and invented NFC.

I disagree. I think you will see a lot of the users of older iPhones will upgrade and if NFC is incorporated into the phone those pesky Apple Fanboys you love to deride will be advocates for the cause. The monolithic platform will work in it's favor unlike Android phones that have NFC built in and functional but crippled because the platform is fragmented by the carriers. All those users coming online at once will be what gets us to critical mass... but I doubt they will claim it as an apple discovery.

I disagree. I have an all out apple fanboy at work that swears the drop down notification bar was invented by apple even though it just got implemented in ios5. Swears that apple pioneered 4g. Invented the touchscreen. And a few others.

Have you considered the dev broke nfc? Have you verified nfc works? Does your extended batery have an nfc antenna in it?

If you're using a generic extended battery that is most likely the problem, as I believe the antenna for the NFC functionality is located in the battery. If you are using the correct battery then it is quite possible that the dev of that particular ROM may not have it functional yet.

I use NFC all the time, alot more than I expected because of Wallet. Alot more places take it than you think and being able to add money to a prepaid card is cool too.

just wish there was a way to top it up internationally!

Why can't it be topped up internationally?

I'll never forget my first time I used it at a BP gas station to get smokes. The cashier did the WTF??!?!? Face expression when I took out my phone and paid for it. I tried to keep a straight face until I exited the place than I bursted laughing lol. I should have recorded it.

Thought it could be used here, haven't people been using NFC at McDonalds. A few years ago there was a huge trial of NFC in London. I'm sure the stuff is still in place there. (I have GWallet on My nexus here in the UK but never used it)

There's a large scale trial in Nice (France) where I live, and they sell NFC phones (a modified Galaxy S II among others) with the ability to add your credit card, pay your bus fare with your phone bill, know exactly when the next bus arrives by tapping your phone on the NFC tag at your stop, or learn stuff about monuments and landmarks by tapping your phone on a NFC tag placed on a glass pane. Pretty cool stuff!

Nice video! I used mine the first time the other day at a 7-11. I was concerned because I had put the new extended battery in and my OtterBox case on. Worked like a champ. I really like being able to pay that way. I recommend downloading the PayPass Locator app from the market to help find locations.
Two questions though, at Home Depot when it said to show your card what did the cashier do? Also, did you hit cancel when it said to enter the pin and run it as credit?

I had to explain to her that there was no physical card to show. I explained to her how NFC works and she still wasn't buying it lol. So I had to open up the Wallet app and show her the picture of the virtual card to further explain it. Finally she understood (somewhat) and let it go through....the funny thing was it was only a 34 cent purchase! lmao.

So I guess my mom is tracking my phone with the sprint family locator, one I figure this will drain battery because my location will constantly be sent, two I don't want my mother knowing when I'm getting high (jk, but I do enjoy privacy), and 3 I beleive she's tracking my father to. This wouldn't be bad except he doesn't want her to, not to bring you guys into my family life, but they just got divorced and long story short they don't trust each other and my father doesn't want her tracking his phone as she's lied to him about this tracking thing before.
SFL is most likely a hidden stock all or just something like ciq hidden in running programs somewhere.
My question : Is there a way I can prevent it from tracking my father and my phones? Such as deleting the service, in installing the app through root, or any way really.
Second question, if I did this would she know through say a notification we cannot be tracked anymore, or perhaps it just won't show up at all?

I installed and tried the app. It only has to be on the primary account holders phone and tracks through gps. I tried tracking my families phones and my girl turned her location services off, so it wouldn't track her phone. Try turning your location services off in settings.

Actually, I have had the locator still able to find phones even if the person has GPS extra off. The only way is to use roam control and use verizons tower. I'm not one hundred percent sure, but I think the locator triangulates your location from the cell phone towers.

Yeah but you could drive around where it says they are all day and not find them. Not that that isn't the case with gps in a building as well. I get good reception for gps in my house but the accuracy bounces around to wider than this block a lot of the time.
If your under 18 there isn't much to say. People want to be left alone and or rebel. But when your a minor and a dependent of someone not only is anything you own their property they are responsible for you.

I remember reading there is a bug that google voice sprint integration breaks family locator, I don't know if sprint fixed it yet.

Just force roam, I don't think there is any other way honestly. But I know that is a for sure method.

The phone triangulates off the towers. It shouldn't matter if you turn GPS off. The force roam idea may work, if he keeps his GPS off. Depending on how often she is checking it, she'll know something is up if the phone is on and the service is not working. (Trust me, I get calls like this all the time.) If you do a change of ownership you keep the same phone number, same contract dates, no ETF, thus you would still get his upgrade. If you roam too much you'll get terminated. Best solution is get a boost mobile and use *73 and leave the sprint phone at home when he's traveling.
She may still catch on, but it could take a while.

If you have a Google voice number integrated with your sprint number it will prevent sfl from obtaining your location. It did for me anyways. It either doesn't affect everyone or others haven't noticed. I haven't found any official confirmation anywhere yet.

My point was there is probably no way to stop her from tracking him, seeing what numbers he calls and texts. With the phone in her name, unfortunately for you and him, there is no way to stop it. Also even without sfl, she can see any number he texts by requesting the info from sprints security department. I have done it myself. its an easy process.

[Q] Anyone else using NFC tags?

So I got the 10 pack + keychain kit from tagsfordroids.com. So far, the only real uses I have found were one for work and one for home. When I get my Bluetooth carkit thing from Dice Electronics this weekend, I may go ahead and program the keychain as well so the phone will connect to the car and such once I am in it. I am using NFC Task Launcher to program to tags.
I was wondering if anyone else uses NFC tags and for what uses?

I just got a few and do the same. I have one where I come home it turns on certain features, I have one in the car that turns on bluetooth, and one on my keychain that turns off WiFi, BT and a bunch of other stuff to save battery while I'm out. It would be even easier if someone would hack our nfc.apk so the setttings would apply at the lock screen or while screen off.

I use AnyTAG (free market app). It doesn't actually write the NFC tag, just reads the ID number from it (so you can still reuse "locked" tags). Would highly recommend it if you're the only person using your tags.

This was one of the first things I noticed immediately. Yeah, we know it's not much more to unlock the phone first, but would be soooo convenient.

I am moving this from General to Q&A because well, its a question. But I am very interested in how to use these better. It is a function out there for these phone that I think is not tapped enough. Maybe this thread will generate more information on the subject.

You have to unlock the phone to use them?? From a security standpoint I guess that's good but for convenience it almost makes them pointless.

I wouldn't say pointless. They can be programmed like a batch file, performing multiple tasks, not just a single function, but I agree that being able to do them with the phone locked would be nice.
I suppose though from a security standpoint, it does make more sense, didn't think of potentially harmful NFC uses.

For me its not worth buying tags for something I can just take a couple seconds to do or automate with tasker.

Others have said this, and I simply say "6 in one, half dozen in the other"... really just a preference at this point. In the meantime, I would like to keep this thread going as a discussion of uses for it, not reason to not get them.

FWIW, here is a small 8 min video I just saw when I was looking for something else about some of the functions of NFC. He is using the same NFC launcher app that you are using as well. But also talks about how some Samsung NFC tags won't work with Nexus 4 but do obviously with GNex.

Can't watch it while at work so I will check it later, but I have heard of some tags having weird incompatibilities and such. Every now and then, when formatting a tag or programming, I will get the weird error about the tag's memory being too small. Not sure if thats what the video is getting at, but I will check it when I get home.

Those seem fine and dandy, but would be nice if these could be applied to non-rooted folks. This is the first Android I have had where I did root and went back to stock as the stock software was just about perfect for me.
