[Q] Exchange Contacts Question - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I have a small problem with Exchange on my Nexus. I had a lot of duplicates entries so I used a program to delete all contacts. I am using the builtin exchange sync on the Nexus. When I removed all my contacts, it actually delted them from the Exchange Server. I assumed that the Exchange contact sync was downstream only, but I was wrong. No fear, I had a Nandroid backup. However, upon restoration there are still no Exchange contacts on the phone or server.
I was hoping someone could explain to me how this works so that I know moving forward. Interestingly enough I forgot that I use Enhanced Email on a Kindle Fire. To my amazement, the contacts are all there. So you can imagine my confusion as to how this all works. I should be able to export my contacts from the Kindle Fire and restore them properly. Please don't ask about the IT person restoring the contacts as he is not worth my keystrokes(said he had to restore the entire company mail).
Any thoughts?

Help! Wiped all contacts from Outlook!

Hi, After using gmail to sync al contacts, calendars & mail & getting fed up with the way google handles contacts, I decided to untick "contacts sync" from googlemail on the phone, then hooked phone up to pc & sync'ed calendar & contacts. In doing so, I have somehow & very stupidly removed ALL my outlook contacts...I can get to my googlemail contacts but outlook is now empty of contacts...please tell me there's a way to get them back from somewhere! Thanks very much
Check the Outlook trashcan.
lol...what a doozy. In the mad flap I was in just didn't think straight. Thanks very much indeed for that. Is there a way I can stop this happening again? I only want Outlook contacts on the phone but happy to sync email & calendar with my gmail account. Cheers again, appreciate your help.
I also decided to remove all sync'ing from my google account- if you have done the same, then you shouldn't have that issue again.
Just to be on the safe side, now that you have your contacts back in Outlook, I'd suggest creating a back up of it (perhaps regularly), to a PST file or similar. Might to be wise to use an app to backup contacts/calender entries directly from the phone- Wave Secure as an example.
Cheers for that, outlook contacts backed up yesterday straight after restoring them back! Appreciate the advice though sh500
Just a quickie now though, I've made a "group" to send funny texts onto and while ome of the texts go to the mobile number, some are being sent to emails...again, anything really simple & dumb I'm doing here? I have set the mobile number as "primary" on all the group members but the phone seems to mix up the emails with the mob' numbers if the contact has more than 1 email address, 1 of which I set as primary too. Cheers again...

[Q] Contact Management and Gmail

OK so here is my problem. I got my phone and was very excited. I started it up and set up my google account (not actually knowing that it was not the sense delivered one). Ok all is fine there... but I wanted to use the HTC Sense email client with m.google.com exchange service.
So I went and stopped the syncing from google. I then went and created a m.google.com exchange account and am getting my mail just fine... but now when I go into the people tab everything appears fine, but when I click on a contact I see 2 of almost everything. I unchecked see google contacts. But when you open it apparently already "linked" the google contact with the excahgne contact.
So, my question after all this is how do I clear all the google contacts and leave the exchange server contacts? will it take a reset? I would prefer not to have to do that.
Thanks in advance for any help.
SoBBie
Well from the response I guess I will have to go with a reset.
Oh well. If someone does know a way please let me know.
Thanks,
SoBBiE
Sent from my HTC Incredible.
Log into your gmail account, click on contacts. You should be able to delete them from there and it should remove them from your phone for you.
OK thanks for that. but the problem there is my Exchange is with Google.... and my google is with google.
So I exported all my contact both the google and the exchange (even though they are the same) to my SD card. I also exported them from google to a CVS file.
So I went into google contacts and deleted all of my contacts. I then went to my phone and did a "Sync" for my exchange and my google account. This removed all my contacts except facebook... GREAT. half way there.
Know I imported only my exchange contact back to my exchange account. Even better if linked my facebook and I see all my contacts (With Pictures) in people.
BUT here is the bad part. when I do a sync with Exchange all my contacts disappear again. What is going on? can I not update my contact from my phone to my exchange (remeber this is google exchange m.google.com).
Please give me some direction. I know that I can import the CVS file in google and only sync with exchange but I will loose all the pictures (250 contacts and almost everyone has a image even BW3's gets a food image ).
I dont want ot have to manually add all those pictures back. and the import on the phone seemed to work great. but it is not pushing the contacts out to google. Any advice would be great.
Kind Regards,
SoBBie
OK so I did the entire process again and it seem to take. I know see my contacts out on google.
Thanks for you help.

[Q] One X contacts only sync one way with Exchange

Hi, I'm a few days into using my HTC One X (first time Android user having just switched from WM6.5) and have found a problem with syncing with Exchange Activesync (Office 365). I'm set up to sync mail, contacts, calendar and tasks with EAS. The problem is with my contacts in the stock "People" app.
I notice for new EAS contacts that I create from the phone (i.e. from an incoming call or SMS), the contact is synced up to OWA and Outlook. But when I make a change to the contact item from OWA or Outlook, the changes do not sync back to the phone. However, if I make another change to the same contact from the phone, it will sync up. It's only syncing one way i.e. from the phone.
This does not happen to the other contacts that were originally downloaded to the phone from Exchange. Meaning, changes to these other contacts will sync both ways - from OWA/Outlook to the phone and vice versa.
Does anyone else have this problem? Better yet, a solution?
Thanks in advance.
ps. If it's any help, I've also downloaded Touchdown to my phone to test. But note that the contacts in Touchdown are not copied/linked to the native phonebook (People app).
Hi UKC1,
What happens when you add a new contact from the Exchange end? Does it sync to your phone, if so do edits to that contact on the phone sync back?
I have Exchange so I will test this for you now, but on the surface it would sound like the contacts that you have added from receiving a call or an SMS are going to a different address book behind the scenes, one that is outside of the Exchange sync scope.
EDIT: I note that when I enter the 'People' app on my phone, and manually add a new contact, I am able to choose from four address books (SIM, Phone, Exchange, Google).
Whilst I haven't tested any further just yet, it could be the issue I mentioned above that you are not creating the contact on the phone inside the 'Exchange' address book, and therefore it will not sync with Exchange.
I was able to reproduce your issue. Create contact on phone in default address book (which is Exchange), contact syncs to Exchange OK. Make change on phone, change updated Exchange OK. Make change in Outlook, contact did not get updated = FAIL. I waited quite a while too (all other changes were instant).
........
However, maybe I have some good news for you, the contact DID get updated after I rebooted the phone.
Can you please confirm that works for you?
Yes, you have reproduced my exact problem. And I tested it again today - same thing. I guess I'm not the only one with this problem then. I elevated it to HTC but there's no response yet.
Anyway, so I rebooted as you suggested but no it didn't work - the outlook/exchange-amended changes DID NOT sync back to my phone. Only when I removed the EAS account and re-setup the account did everything sync. Then I tested it again by creating more contacts from the phone.
Funny thing is that now some of phone-created contacts are syncing both ways now. But others are still not.
I can keep testing but my actual EAS account has 3000+ contacts. There's no way I can keep track what is synced.
This people app is just looking unreliable. Any other ideas?
Nothing that I know of with EAS support. Could be because you have a large number of contacts. If I was to suggest anything it would be split them up into groups. Then again with 3000 contacts I would assume you have already done that! Perhaps try an AOSP ROM such as Trips CM9 and try the default ICS experience to see if you have the same issue. Could be the People app, could be the EAS support within ICS itself. Would be interested in your findings.

[Q] Exchange contact sync works only partially

Hey there,
I am having trouble syncing my contacts (using the native android app) with my hosted exchange account.
New contacts added to the phone are synced to exchange, changes and new contacts addes via outlook and owa are synced to the phone BUT: changes that I make to existing contacts on the phone are not synced to exchange.
Calendar and email sync works without any problems. I have been using various ROMs, deleted and re-added the account, erased cache,... the problem remains.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. (I have tried touchdown and others, I don't like them)
Thanks
DoubleYou
No ideas? Well.... I don't blame you. I am speechless as well.
Oddly enough, I am having the exact same problem. There are ballpark 2,000 contacts in my local Outlook, but only 600-700 are sync'ing to my Galaxy S5. Another weird thing is that the Google Search feature on the phone no longer finds the contacts that DO show. I do the search for a contact I know is in the phone's database, scroll over to the phone results tab to be sure, and it says "no results found on your phone".
This is bizarre as both were working perfectly at one point. Something got gummed somewhere, and I have no clue??

[Q] Getting contacts saved from former Exchange account

This one is difficult for me.. And I have no idea how to solve it
I left the company where I've worked for 7 years. I have all my personal contacts synced to my former company's Exchange account. That account has since been locked, but my phone still retains all the contacts.
How do I move these Exchange account contacts to a specific contact list in Gmail (or another account)? When I try to do a backup of the phone, I can't find any backup program that lets me backup just my Exchange contacts.. instead. it tries to backup the 3,000 gmail "other" contacts as well, which is just a huge mess and what I don't want to retain or backup. I just want the Exchange contacts backed up.
BTW.. i also have the contacts synced on my ipad, so if u know of an IOS way to do this, I can do it on there.
Anyone? HELP!
