Hello! Im thinking to buy the Arc I have some questions.
1.Do all 720p formats (mkv,avi,mpg) play smooth?
I guess 1080i files or 1080i youtube wont play smooth right(+hdmi out)?
Should I update to latest fw?
2.If I download .apk games/apps not from the market, will I be able to install them or root is needed (want to keep the warranty for a while)?
3.Are the 320MB internal storage a problem? Maybe for the "install only in internal" apps?
4.Tell me the bad points of the phone (the ones that you find out after a few weeks using it)
Thank you in advance!

1. Most formats play very nicely on device. You will need a third party video player to play mkv, mpg, wmv etc.
2. There is an option, like on all android devices, to install non-market apps without root. I have a unlocked device so I'm not sure if some carriers restrict this option.
3. Internal storage is not a problem for me. 2.3.4 supports move to SD.
4. Bad points are few. WIFI connectivity is tempermental. Some complain about camera but I think it's fine. Some questions about build quality, but performance is impressive for single core processor. I have had both arc and arc s and I have been satisfied with both.
5. This is your first post, welcome to XDA!
Thanx augie7107!
I had an Xperia arc but i moved onto another phone for the following reasons.
-It cannot run a lot of HD games without getting hot or crashing.
-For me the screen was small
-It wasnt fast enough
-The internal memory was a let down, I always got the error about low internal memory. and so i was constantly having to dlete apps.
-The resolution of the screen was not good enough for me.
-The battery life was awful but it did improve a bit, not enough though.
-And lastly i do not think this phone recieves enough support in terms of roms and so on....
This is just my opinion of what i felt the phone was like. Everyone has thier own preferences so you may like the phone just like other people on this forum who own an Xperia arc.

720p will play completely smooth.
But you have to download an app for *.avi, etc.
I'd recommend QQ player.

Do you know "allow unknown sources"?
And I'd recommend to root, you won't avoid your warranty unless you don't unlock your BL.

You could use App2SD or my favourite Link2SD.
I've about 100 apps installed and never run out of memory with Link2SD.

A little bit more RAM for better multitasking would be great.
Some people talk about the heat, but I don't see that as a problem, because it doesn't interfere your daily use.
But I'm really satisfied about it and would it buy every time again.
I have the arc s and i think its very good, but it has a bit too less RAM and when you play it gets hot.

Wow, it gets hot.
Every phone is getting hot, but you just feel it on some devices more.
And it doesn't interfere anything.

Exactly.. It's a cellphone, the hardware doesn't have cooling but have to run (for me) at 1.4 ghz... I cannot pretend that stay cold.. I just think to the performance and for me it's more than I need or can do on a 4.2" screen..

Hello!
See the thing is that I used to be a worshiper of Nokia, until the doctors announced the inescapable soon to be natural death of Symbian. And now having seen the Android Beauty I feel like I have landed on Mars.
I know nothing about the Android devices but am planing to own an xperia Play in the coming days.
I am mostly interested in organizing life through the use of phone (like Reminders, Memos, Tasks, Calenders etc.), browsing Internet, and using applications (like FaceBook, Twitter, and several others) and user interface experience (I will mention what I mean by that).
1. Now as far as the organization stuff is concerned I have been told that Play hasn't got either one of them, but all can be download easily and in good quality. And I am okay with this issue. BUT CONFIRM IF THIS IS AS SIMPLE AS IT SEEMS?
2. Now about the Internet, well this is the main reason of opting for Play, instead of other Sony Ericsson or HTC or Samsung phones. I have read that the phone has got quality web browsing with 4-inch screen. Websites load quite fast comparred to even other SE phones. KINDLY CONFIRM IF THIS IS TRUE AT YOUR END?
3. I have no idea how good this third requirement is served up by SE Play. And that is the reason for this thread. PLEASE EXPLAIN THIS WITH EXTENSIVE DETAIL AS IF YOU WERE EXPLAINING TO A NEWBORN BABY. BECAUSE I HAVE SEARCHED SEVERAL FORUMS REGARDING THIS ISSUE AND ALL I HAVE GOTTEN SO FAR IS CONFUSION.
So here is the issue, CAN PLAY OR ANDROID (I DON'T KNOW WHICH TO MENTION) DOWNLOAD APPLICATIONS STRAIGHT TO SD, WITHOUT ANY HACK OR METHOD THAT GOES AGAINST THE WARRANTY CONDITIONS? SOME SAY IT CAN SOME SAY IT CAN'T BUT OTHER ANDROIDS CAN SOME SAY IT CAN'T BUT ONCE IT HAS BEEN INSTALLED THEN YOU CAN MOVE IT SOME SAY YOU CAN USING ROM (WHAT THE .... IS ROM, IS IT THE SAME READ-ONLY-MEMORY); WHICH IS IT?
AGAIN PLEASE AN XPERIA PLAY USER EXPLAIN BECAUSE THAT IS THE PHONE I AM GOING TO OWN.
ASSUMING THAT NO MATTER WHAT APPLICATIONS CAN'T BE MOVED TO SD, THEN DO YOU COMMON USERS FEEL THAT 400 MB IS GOOD ENOUGH?
4. Now the user interface, by this I mean the simplicity like we used to have in Nokia or we have in iOS. Like no techie stuff no booting, rooting, rebooting, rerooting etc. No need to dig into the files instead the phone. Also, no crashes, no bugs etc. Becasue I have also been told that Android is still in its developing stages and has problems of its own?
5. And now your opinion, DO YOU THINK PLAY IS WORTH BUYING? I mean I am not much into gaming as much I am into the things mentioned above. Although gaming seems an extra appeal to me. But from the user experience point of view would you recommend this phone.
Thanks for at least reading even if you have no solution.
Enough with the caps. No one's going to want to respond to you when you do that.
1) Yes, built-in calendar, rest can be downloaded.
2) Web browsing's only as good as your connection. Not a problem here.
3) There's a small hack but it doesn't void your warrantee or anything like that. Unless you install a ton of apps and games, 400MB internal should be enough for the average user.
4) Good luck finding any operating system out there that doesn't boot, has no bugs and has no crashes.
5) If you aren't a hardcore gamer or really enjoy emulating the classics, you could probably find a phone better suited towards your uses.

Hello!
Okay thanks for the reply and sorry about the CAPS.
Just 1 more things.
About the sd issue, after that hack does the phone run fine or have there been any issues. Also are there any hopes of this service to be included in the coming updates, I mean if you have heard so somewhere.
Thanks.
I'll confirm that Xperia play is a Sony ericsson phone.

It's not a hack, google had been evolving the move to SD function over the last few versions of the OS. In froyo only the actuall apps .apk could be moved to the SD card. But with the launch of gingerbread, google announed you could also move the apps .libs too. This will not slow your phone down or void your warrenty as its a native feature in the OS
Sent from my R800i using Tapatalk
Only thing to think about is if a package has widgets or has a service as part of it, putting the app on the SD card will break them.
@Jack Shepard: the wonderful thing about android is you can change and tailor any of the features you are concerned with to your liking. Claenders, memos, web browsing; even the ui, all without breaking any warrenties or using any hacks. Android comes with everything that you asked for already built in and if you don't like the layout or how it behaves, you simply download a different one to replace it. I can't even begin to count how many different Calender/memo apps there are in the market along with different keyboards, Widgets, etc... even if you don't like the stock web browser there are four others I could list just straight off the top of my head.
As far as web browsing in general, the chipset in the xperia play has hardware flash support so websites with a lot of flash will render a lot quicker then older phones.
As far as downloading apps to your sd card, it really is as simple as downloading it from the market. However keep in mind that the developer the makes the app has to include sd card support. Its much more comman place then it was a year ago but you still may run into an app or two that don't.
And finally yes, if you enjoy gaming on your phone and want to be able to enjoy something other then angry birds, you definately want to check out the play
Fix your grammer bro and use the search.
P.s. Why are you so angry?
Why would you consider the play if your not much of a gamer...that's the crowd this phone is tailored to. Android is highly customizable, you can change almost anything to match your needs. If you are unwillingly to spend extra time setting up your phone, reading and playing around with stuff... Then don't get android. Stick with the ios.

I'm on 2.3.3, and have everything I need to go to 2.3.4
All I'm really worried about is my gamesaves... I've made a megaton of progress in everything.
I really want 2.3.4, and I'm overjoyed to have found a way to get it on a R800a I imported to work on AT&T... but I really can't just throw away all the progress I've made in these games.
yea i have the same question in mind.. =\
Depending on the game, a Titanium Backup of it should definitely keep the saves. I've done it on a couple games and it worked
If you just update with FlashTool the saves will most certainly be gone. However if you back the games up with Titanium Backup as mentioned above, the saves should be backuped also. Though I can not guarantee anything. So for starters you need at least root.
Yeah, I actually already knew about Titanium Backup and figured I'd be SoL without root.
At any rate, I decided to cut my losses and just do it... and I'm SO glad I did!
2.3.4 kicks outstanding amounts of ass! xLoud is wonderful, I got my 720p recording, screenshots will be all too useful (especially for my game list!) I had like 280MB of free space as opposed to the pissweak 181MB I had on 2.3.3, battery life is amazing (I fell asleep with WiFi on and my battery barely dropped 3% overnight) connection is so much more stable... and I recovered most of my apps even though the saves were lost.
...the only thing that's bothering me is, for some reason, all the stuff I grabbed off GetJar is telling there's no Xperia PLAY version. Highly infuriating because a megaton of my games were grabbed for free off GetJar.
Yeah battery life is amazing on 2.3.4. Mine always drops 3% each night with 9 hours sleep. On 2.3.3 it dropped the same amount in like an hour or two. Lasts long in use too. Don't forget to uncheck autobrightness now that you can!
Can't help you with the GetJar stuff though, no idea what that is.

You don't need to unmound SD card when updating because the updating process doesn't touch it anyway. And if you badly want the new update you can just flash it yourself with FlashTool instead of waiting?

The update is for GSM handsets only, it would probably brick a CDMA unless you had a new kernel to flash and there's currently no 2.3.4 CDMA kernel available .

Ah too bad. The 2.3.4 update really is good so I hope they bring it to you soon.
I have just bought the PLAY (R800i, 2.3.4) from O2 in the UK after having a Sony Ericsson W995 for over 2 years. I've recently discovered this site and the possibilities for customisation seem endless!
I'm a blank slate when it comes to doing this sort of thing, especially when it comes to mobile devices (I never did get the courage to put Custom Firmware on my PSP.) But I have a shortlist of what I'd like to be able to do to my new phone :
-Increase Battery life
-Decrease booting up time from power off
-Get rid of some bloatware and free up phone memory
-Get 2 or 3 emulators with a fair few games on there
-GB: Pokemon
-PS1: Crash Bandicoots, Spyros, Final Fantasys
-N64: Mario Kart, Super Mario
-Be able to hold and use most of this stuff on my 32GB SD card
It may not seem like an awful lot, as I don't really want to risk bricking a rather expensive and mint condition phone. I know this can all be achieved, what I don't know is how, or more specifically: in which order.
So if there's anyone out there kind enough to help a noob I'd be very grateful to hear your advice Also if you think there's anything important or what you consider a must-have, I'm open to suggestions!
Hi!
I can give it a try and try to get you some easy tip how to go further with what you wanna do, here is some advices on apps:
-Increase Battery life
To do this, first root your device (Try search in the Xperia Play Development thread on how to get root.)
After you have rooted it, then you can use those apps for example:
No-frills CPU Control (changes the frequency of the cellphone, to the one you prefer, set it at a real low value to get longer batterylife, increase frequency manually when you wanna play for less lag )
And another app is:
Autokiller (Requires root as well, and you can find other apps who can help with improving batterylife as well.)
-Get rid of some bloatware and free up phone memory
Root your phone and get an app called "Root explorer", and then someone else can tell you the exact search-way to the path where you can delete the bloatware, and which bloatware are safe to remove and which you must have saved and such since I don't remember the path and the things around it.
And you can read more about what Root is in the link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1076720
And you can search for Xperia Play-compatible Emulators here on XDA in some Xperia Play-section as well cause it's not hard to find
Sorry for not being to too much help, but I hope I gave you some help on the way

Hi, thanks for the reply
Aha I see, so Rooting is a necessity to be able to do anything? That's number 1 then
Then after that I'll check out the apps you mentioned and have a look for those emulators. One thing I noticed was that apparently it doesn't let you store much on the SD card itself, and the phone memory gets taken up quite quickly. I'm mainly thinking about the games that I've heard store a large chunk of their data on the phone and can't immediately be moved to the SD manually?

Root is the first thing you want. You can move every app when you have root with titanium backup. Your phone is all shiny and new, but in 2 months you wanna tweak it how you want. I suggest you get clockworkmod so you can make full backups in case something goes wrong. After that install the supercharger script and by the time you get bored, ICS is coming out.

Gameloft games are made for maximum profit, they're the EA of mobile gaming. They forced their employees to work long hours, while this is the norm for gaming industry, 120hours a week has been quoted. They have poor users policy as well. They will purposefully make older games incompatible with newer devices or take them off the market even though you purchased the game and the device can run it, to promote their new ones. They originally charged 99cents for Asphalt 8, but the game is designed as free to play, as in you play for long hours to gain points/money in order to progress or upgrade and utilize in game purchases that way, milking more money from its users that way.

Really? Well thank you for the advice and info but i will certainly not disable my ad blocker for a paid game to show me ads i haven't had before. Also disabling is not that easy in my case since the ad blocker is included within my ROM (ARHD for HTC One). In order to disable it i would have to completely reflash it which i'm also not going to do just for this insolence on the part of Gameloft.
In what way is this even legal procedure by Gameloft making me pay for a game first and patching it to unplayability with an unrestorable update later on?

It's normal I think. My phone lags also when installing a downloaded app especially heavier apps. Of course this lag is minor and doesn't keep me from doing what I have in hand.

Not normal to have lag on this phone. I get lag on my 5yo tablet. Restart phone (sorry have to suggest that lately). Maybe try an app like ccleaner to clean up. Clear cache from playstore app. Lastly do factory reset and see if that fixes it. If factory reset fixes it, try to notice when issue begins again.
Do you have adoptable storage enabled?
