Hello!
See the thing is that I used to be a worshiper of Nokia, until the doctors announced the inescapable soon to be natural death of Symbian. And now having seen the Android Beauty I feel like I have landed on Mars.
I know nothing about the Android devices but am planing to own an xperia Play in the coming days.
I am mostly interested in organizing life through the use of phone (like Reminders, Memos, Tasks, Calenders etc.), browsing Internet, and using applications (like FaceBook, Twitter, and several others) and user interface experience (I will mention what I mean by that).
1. Now as far as the organization stuff is concerned I have been told that Play hasn't got either one of them, but all can be download easily and in good quality. And I am okay with this issue. BUT CONFIRM IF THIS IS AS SIMPLE AS IT SEEMS?
2. Now about the Internet, well this is the main reason of opting for Play, instead of other Sony Ericsson or HTC or Samsung phones. I have read that the phone has got quality web browsing with 4-inch screen. Websites load quite fast comparred to even other SE phones. KINDLY CONFIRM IF THIS IS TRUE AT YOUR END?
3. I have no idea how good this third requirement is served up by SE Play. And that is the reason for this thread. PLEASE EXPLAIN THIS WITH EXTENSIVE DETAIL AS IF YOU WERE EXPLAINING TO A NEWBORN BABY. BECAUSE I HAVE SEARCHED SEVERAL FORUMS REGARDING THIS ISSUE AND ALL I HAVE GOTTEN SO FAR IS CONFUSION.
So here is the issue, CAN PLAY OR ANDROID (I DON'T KNOW WHICH TO MENTION) DOWNLOAD APPLICATIONS STRAIGHT TO SD, WITHOUT ANY HACK OR METHOD THAT GOES AGAINST THE WARRANTY CONDITIONS? SOME SAY IT CAN SOME SAY IT CAN'T BUT OTHER ANDROIDS CAN SOME SAY IT CAN'T BUT ONCE IT HAS BEEN INSTALLED THEN YOU CAN MOVE IT SOME SAY YOU CAN USING ROM (WHAT THE .... IS ROM, IS IT THE SAME READ-ONLY-MEMORY); WHICH IS IT?
AGAIN PLEASE AN XPERIA PLAY USER EXPLAIN BECAUSE THAT IS THE PHONE I AM GOING TO OWN.
ASSUMING THAT NO MATTER WHAT APPLICATIONS CAN'T BE MOVED TO SD, THEN DO YOU COMMON USERS FEEL THAT 400 MB IS GOOD ENOUGH?
4. Now the user interface, by this I mean the simplicity like we used to have in Nokia or we have in iOS. Like no techie stuff no booting, rooting, rebooting, rerooting etc. No need to dig into the files instead the phone. Also, no crashes, no bugs etc. Becasue I have also been told that Android is still in its developing stages and has problems of its own?
5. And now your opinion, DO YOU THINK PLAY IS WORTH BUYING? I mean I am not much into gaming as much I am into the things mentioned above. Although gaming seems an extra appeal to me. But from the user experience point of view would you recommend this phone.
Thanks for at least reading even if you have no solution.
Enough with the caps. No one's going to want to respond to you when you do that.
1) Yes, built-in calendar, rest can be downloaded.
2) Web browsing's only as good as your connection. Not a problem here.
3) There's a small hack but it doesn't void your warrantee or anything like that. Unless you install a ton of apps and games, 400MB internal should be enough for the average user.
4) Good luck finding any operating system out there that doesn't boot, has no bugs and has no crashes.
5) If you aren't a hardcore gamer or really enjoy emulating the classics, you could probably find a phone better suited towards your uses.

Hello!
Okay thanks for the reply and sorry about the CAPS.
Just 1 more things.
About the sd issue, after that hack does the phone run fine or have there been any issues. Also are there any hopes of this service to be included in the coming updates, I mean if you have heard so somewhere.
Thanks.
I'll confirm that Xperia play is a Sony ericsson phone.

It's not a hack, google had been evolving the move to SD function over the last few versions of the OS. In froyo only the actuall apps .apk could be moved to the SD card. But with the launch of gingerbread, google announed you could also move the apps .libs too. This will not slow your phone down or void your warrenty as its a native feature in the OS
Sent from my R800i using Tapatalk
Only thing to think about is if a package has widgets or has a service as part of it, putting the app on the SD card will break them.
@Jack Shepard: the wonderful thing about android is you can change and tailor any of the features you are concerned with to your liking. Claenders, memos, web browsing; even the ui, all without breaking any warrenties or using any hacks. Android comes with everything that you asked for already built in and if you don't like the layout or how it behaves, you simply download a different one to replace it. I can't even begin to count how many different Calender/memo apps there are in the market along with different keyboards, Widgets, etc... even if you don't like the stock web browser there are four others I could list just straight off the top of my head.
As far as web browsing in general, the chipset in the xperia play has hardware flash support so websites with a lot of flash will render a lot quicker then older phones.
As far as downloading apps to your sd card, it really is as simple as downloading it from the market. However keep in mind that the developer the makes the app has to include sd card support. Its much more comman place then it was a year ago but you still may run into an app or two that don't.
And finally yes, if you enjoy gaming on your phone and want to be able to enjoy something other then angry birds, you definately want to check out the play
Fix your grammer bro and use the search.
P.s. Why are you so angry?
Why would you consider the play if your not much of a gamer...that's the crowd this phone is tailored to. Android is highly customizable, you can change almost anything to match your needs. If you are unwillingly to spend extra time setting up your phone, reading and playing around with stuff... Then don't get android. Stick with the ios.

So far I have been largely impressed by Android OS. I really, really like the level of customization - the importance of which cannot be overstated. I'm not out to start a flamer thread, but there are lots of things that Android, given the proper hardware, does better. However, there are still a couple things that I'm missing before I can declare my Desire fully ready for the stresses of the day.
I'm fairly addicted to podcasts - I listen to then pretty much every day, most of the day while at work. I know there are several apps where I can download podcasts right from the phone as well a few iTunes hop-on software packages. The goal is to get as much like what I can do in iTunes as possible. Say I have an audiobook that gets interrupted or that I want to supplement with some music. Is there a music program that can decipher between normal audio files and ones that are tagged as being audiobooks? Meaning that when you stop it in order to play another audio file, does it pick up where you left off? Also, I have 29 gigs of podcasts that I have not yet listened to. This is where the need for a simple, elegant media program on my desktop comes in. I'd like to be able to individually select which episodes of each podcast I'd like to sync with my Desire or have the option of just syncing everything in that specific podcast that has not yet been listened to. So basically, the same sorting capabilities of iTunes. That's the first thing that is missing.
I know there are hundreds of these task killer programs; some more thorough than others. This is where the iPhone exceeds (now) - but webOS even more so. I've found something that is a push in the right direction; QuickDesk Beta. But I need something like that that can also be brought up in the lock screen. More importantly though, there needs to be some kind of widget that can be placed within QuickDesk that displays all the programs currently open (even if they're in a static state), so you can easily 'x' whichever ones you'd like to close out of. I'm talking actual apps, not background services or mods of that type. WebOS is pretty much the benchmark for mobile task management, so I'd love to come as close to it as possible. This is the second thing that's missing, or maybe that I'm just not aware of yet. Any suggestions / ideas?
I'm running DeFroST 2.0b
One more quick question: I installed DeFroST 2.0b over 2.0a. After I had done this, I reinstalled the baseband version update, cause the echo came back. It's great now, but I'm wondering if there is anything about that procedure that is prone to cause problems. I know you should factory reset / clear cache before a ROM install, but I really didn't want to re-enter all my info / re download all my apps. I understand Google does a backup of your personal information on Froyo, I'm just not sure to what extent. Anyway... just curious.
Thanks to richardtrip and everyone involved in the making of the DeForST ROM - It's great! Definitely a cause worth donating to.
regarding what you said about task killers - there has been hundreds of threads about it already and still people dont understand that YOU SHOULDNT USE a task killer on android system.

well, i need to from time to time. mainly for the browser.
For podcast have a look at Google Listen, might not do all you want but a good place to start.

I'm also a bit of a podcast nut, I've tried most of the podcatching apps and found doggcatcher to be the best. Listen is pretty good for a free one.
By the way is that baseband update a fix for everyone that has the echo problem? That echo is the only reason I am still using Pays Eclair rom...
As for task managers, I think there is a place for them on older devices where ram is limited. You don't need one on the desire though.

You do if you want to kill tasks. Are you saying no apps are badly written? Google for a bit, or read comments for various apps on the market-place.

They reason they don't understand it is that your link doesn't explain it. And the blog from google essentially says the OS just kills it when there is no memory left. If the OS can do it we can do it (and some of them do run in the background)
Thanks for all the suggestions and tips, guys. I guess it's not so much an app killer that i want, but rather, a nice looking way of seeing everything that's open. I dunno, I guess my thinking a little too conventional for the Android world. Google listen can't seem to find anything I'm looking for. And Doubletwist, while a great idea, is honestly the buggiest, slowest, something that should be labeled as being in alpha stages that I've ever seen. It is a step in the right direction though. I'll definitely check out doggcatcher. I'm loving the XDA app, btw!

Certainly agree about Doubletwist. Nice idea, not ready.
I find it odd that this is not a more frequented topic for this device.
I'm running JB and really, the lack of memory for these phones is appalling.
I found an app that would create swap space and it is really working quite well.
Before, I would have to free up ram in order to keep programs running like they should.
Now, I can practically boot my phone and not both with that anymore.
Yes, swap can slow the phone.
Yes, swap is slow and overly inefficient.
But, the benefits of a little swap space (32mb) is a VAST improvement.
I'd like to know everyone's thoughts on this. I am relieved to find an app that would do this automatically instead of having to code something up myself.
you don't need an app for this
just use the script I provided in the CM10 thread or wait for the next CM10 build. It will create about 200 mb of swap space by default
and this has been the topic in many threads so you are wrong on this

you might find it odd for the reason that hardly anyone has mem problems, i have a ton of apps installed and don't run out of mem....
I beg to differ.
Run:
IMO
Facebook
Twitter
Mail (Exchange Services)
Then proceed to browse the web and watch the lag happen on JB.
Running with 20mb free memory is not what I consider optimal. If this phone had even 512mb ram then I wouldn't even be having these issues.

I use many apps and don't run out of mem. And I don't RAM watch unless I know I've way too many apps. Just calm down, uninstall Facebook (RAM/lag hog) and you would be fine. There shouldn't be any lag in these ROMs, as we run ICS without lag whatsoever.
I do not see how uninstalling Facebook is the answer. It proves my point.
Basically, I have these phones and since my wife had an iPhone before this one I get an ear full every day.
She likes MIUI because it looks similar. So I have that installed for her. I've personally had a better experience with Pacman. So I'm going to move her to that.
What I have noticed is that swap works on these devices better than without.
To tell someone to uninstall a memory hog defeats the purpose of basic consumer usage of these phones.
They are low on memory. We cannot upgrade the ram, but we can work around it.
I would prefer to use a generic version of JB and not one all spiffed up with extras.

Facebook isn't only a problem on this device.
My device is the HTC One X. Its considered a "high-end" phone. Still though, my phone, along with other people's phones lag, and lose battery like crazy when it is installed.
Don't blame developers. The hardware in these phones is not the developers issue. Crappy apps is the issue.
I hope that I'm not sounding ungrateful. I'm extremely pleased with current rom progress. My issue is directly related to the lack of ram on these devices. I'm not sure exactly how a logcat would be helpful when there are no errors occurring. However, this device we released a few months ago. Their lack of a minimum of 512mb of ram is disheartening. Android and its applications have been moving forward with developing great devices that could one day relieve the need to goto a computer for specific tasks.
Facebook is a hog. I agree with this, but removing it is not a fix.
Android is great with memory management. Linux in general is. But forcing background apps that should stay running to close is something that swap helps to relieve.
I've currently had zero issues with apps that I have running in the background. They are now staying open like they should be.
I would love to build a rom. However, I wouldn't have a clue where to start. And as time permits, it's not really something I can pursue at the moment.

NO ONE CAN DO ANYTHING ABOUT FACEBOOK!!! Find a third party app or use the web! (http://facebook.com in case you need a link). Removing it is the only fix you have. Don't build a ROM, build a phone and build a third party Facebook app.

1. I feel the need to reply because swap won't solve the problem in your scenario. In your scenario, you need a Facebook replacement as swap will not not help. The Facebook app sucks; Facebook is not even meant for use on JellyBean.
2. Because you are being rude to devs who deserve your thanks, not your impatience.

1. This is the most ridiculous response I have ever seen. Facebook isn't supposed to be used on JB? Does FB know this?
2. I am not being rude at all. I'm trying to have a conversation with general HTC One V users that may have so opinions on using swap.
The devs believe its not needed. The devs are not typical users, nor am I.
For your info, swap DOES help. When using facebook on the phone, it does not kill off other processes that I want to continue running.
Lloir, logcat wont help. Best is to install a ton of apps that should stay running in the background when opened. I provided this list earlier. You will notice that ram will get low and kill off one of those processes that it needs to kill to continue running the opened app.

Wait. Why the duck do you blame ROMs if you use some apps on it? Did the ROM came with Facebook integration or any other social channel for that matter? NO!
You are using them solo, a developer is not here to help you if the Facebook app itself has problems. One v has small amount of ram? Go buy an iPhone. Why did you buy it in the first place?
Seems to me that you are the developer of that swap app and you expected everyone to ask you to give a link. We are not that stupid, we don't need an app to mk swap.
Your ungratefulness has driven me on the wall this morning and you don't deserve to run our crappy ROMs how you think they are.

I want to be able to granularly set the permissions for each app. From what I understand my options are:
Cyanogenmod - except CM10 for SGS2 is missing this at this time
Pdroid for GB
Pdroid 2.0 - running CM10 only
LBE (from China)
I have had Pdroid 2.0 running on CM10 for a few weeks but CM10 isn't stable - just had it auto-reboot in the middle of a call. Does anybody have any other ideas / suggestions?
On a related note - I'm wondering why it seems that most people aren't bothered with apps monitoring their use and even more important archiving all the data compiled on them?? The only thing that I can think of is that most cell phone / XDA users are really young and just don't know any better??? Didn't they pay any attention in history class?? What am I missing here?

Because phone security is generally easy to manage. Most apps make a good name for themselves. And many people check the security of an app as soon as it were to hit the Play Store. It doesn't mean we are young it means that we aren't dumb and know how modern technology works.

I highly doubt that anyone on XDA, regardless of age, is dumb. I do believe, however, that there are quite a few younger members who could be a bit naive due to a lack of experience. Younger folks tend to take most things at face value. Just because something is free monetarily doesn't mean it isn't costing you something. Just because an app is on Play Store doesn't mean it is "secure" - especially since the Play Store (as well as Android, Google, et.al.) operate on the same business model as the apps!
Just a random example - Why would Angry Birds need my Sim Card Serial number to operate properly? Why would it need to know the phone numbers of all my incoming calls? Answer - it doesn't - in fact it doesn't need ANY of the permissions it asks for to operate properly. So why does it ask for these permissions? Answer - it is data mining your phone.
Ok, so I think most XDA members are aware of WHAT these apps are doing. My original question is WHY don't more people seem to care?

I believe MIUI is also a viable option for this, no? You can set app permission on a "per-app" basis with MIUI security I believe.

I tried this app a while back and it basically does what you want but it got annoying https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lbe.security.lite
I don't use these because I am very selective about what goes on my phone.
Thanks Luke!
Not very familiar with MIUI ROM's will have to look into them.

Yes, this is the app I listed above - just had the initials wrong! :silly: It is a lot like pdroid but, like you, it scares me.
I have my own small business and run most of it from my phone, in the beginning I used the standard flip phone then graduated on to a touch pro 2 with Windows Mobile 6.5 as I began to accumulate massive amounts of data on my Windows Mobile phone, for some reason I still felt secure in the applications like ActiveSync that I was in control of my data.... A year ago last October I upgraded to the Samsung Galaxy s2.. this was my first real experience with Google's Android operating system. in the first few minutes of using the new phone I could see how deeply the hooks were being placed to data mine my information. I resisted at first but then came to realize if I wanted all the bells and whistles Google was offering I had to play the game... I use the security program mentioned above... maybe they should have an app were you sign a consent of exactly which data you would like to keep on your phone and not share with other people. then when you visit the play store apps that request more of your private data than you're willing to share won't show up? I would like to have an open sourced built firewall that monitors traffic, letting me choose the permissions per app as I see fit.

I've ran both Adhvanlt's and Lens's JB MIUI Roms, and they're both amazing! The standard MIUI launcher feels a bit like the iphone, and there is no app drawer, but that's easily fixed by downloading [insert favorite launcher here] if you don't care for it. There's hundreds of options for customization. They are literally the most customizable ROMs you'll ever run; All of this on top of the fact that it has the security features I believe you are after baked right in to it.

Looked at two MIUI ROM's for the E4GT. Both of them have issues with Google Voice. I need Google Voice.
I am also going to try +AF (Droidwall fork) firewall tonight to see if it will work on FK23. It apparently has issues with some ICS/JB ROM's. That will at least give some protection from apps that don't need network access at all. But for apps that need network access to do their intended job it's useless. Just read last night that the developer has added profiles to +AF - that should be really cool.
I guess I'm spoiled a bit with Pdroid - it works so well and is very detailed.
Thanks for all the replies! Other suggestions, ideas, thoughts, opinions welcomed!

As an app developer, I can tell you that there are some shady apps, but if you download from good devs, the permissions are *usually* necessary. Here's some examples that people question the most:
Access to contacts... Assuming it's not a contact or sms app, if any app has a "share" feature needs this permission.
Access to sd card... Any app that saves anything or lets you change a background needs this.
Read phone state... So the app can properly call the "onpause" method when a call comes in.
Access to location... Assuming it's not a location app or game like ingress or zombies!Run!, you'll typically see this on free apps that have ads. Ads allow developers to get paid for their work while keeping the app free. They don't have access to the ad data, though. They just put in the api and the ad company handles the rest.
On top of that, large organizations will seek phone specific permissions like sim card numbers for analytics.
Google makes most of its money from ads, so it reads your usage to better target ads. Google also uses location data to improve location services like maps.
If you're worried about security, don't download a random app that only has 100+ downloads. If an app has 50000+ downloads, you can rest assured that it's already been vetted.
Also if you're downloading pirated apps, you're just a moron who is opening up his world to who knows who. Many (not all) pirated apps have added data mining code.

I'm in stock/unrooted phone and I'm looking to disable as many apps as I can without negatively affecting performance.
I've seen lists for other phones but haven't seen one for the M10.
Be grateful if someone could signpost me to a list already made or just start one here.

All the Google stuff really, besides play services and play, gmail and whatever else you use.
The other apps unless identifiable is leave will alone. You could end up with an OS that won't boot and in all fairness the benefits are extremely minimal.
Personally I'm like yourself I don't like bloat, but I'm rooted, so I flash venom and then tick the compete removal of sense then install the pixel launcher. Battery wise there's very little difference though.

Also, I did find this link on line for another HTC phone and might try to disable some of the system apps outlined there.

Yea I've been through this before, I've streamlined my windows installation back when it was a benefit, but even then it wasn't a huge help.
If you ever root, check out apps like autostarts which stop apps from opening and that would probably have a bigger impact, haven't used autostarts for a while, minimal footprint from the app itself, but as I said you would need root access, plus removing ads etc and titanium to remove apps completey, for me rooting gives you the most flexibility and thus the largest benefit to better battery and performance, but again that's down the yourself.
Streamlining apps and removing things you don't need will give you a large benefit, get rid of apps that are intrusive like push ads, even Facebook has a massive impact on battery, Skype, Viber, they're all hogs.
Thanks for taking the time to reply again, I am a bit scared of the whole rooting process.. maybe I could take my phone to a repair shop so they can do it for me?

It's a couple clicks on your phone, just have to pay up $20. No worries. A phone shop probably won't do it for you
Repair shop will not guarantee anything in case something will go wrong.
Time to post first on topic list:

You can usually find some decent bloat removal lists here on XDA. Won't be made for the 10 and a little behind, but should help. I think getting a full updated safe to remove list is a great idea.
As for S-OFF (root), Sunshine crew does an amazing job to make the process as easy and safe as possible and provide really great support, even through phone I believe, as well as there irc channel.
Very good idea to do your M8 first as it can be very easy to permenantly brick your device IF you decide to mess around without research, which from your posts will not be an issue for you.
Basically once you are S-OFF, if you don't know what you're doing, just find a tutorial or ask in the appropriate thread, or create one.
Happy flashing.

highly unlikely you'll mess it up. Plus you don't need s-off so it is free. If you need help rooting IM me and i'll help, rooting is a process you want to be familiar with, getting someone to go do it for you isn't helpful because you don't learn anything, the root process isn't hard you'll be fine

Ah OK, yea I was referring to int unlocked. Provider specific I wouldn't know, I always buy unlocked. Less hassle.
I've recently come into possession of practically new Xperia Play. And while I know it's specs are less than ideal nowadays, I figured there must be something that can be done to it in order to turn it into a relatively good console. So, I wanted to ask you all if this is possible. I've rooted and put on Custom ROMs on phones before, but never on something this... old?
To be clear, playing games is basically the one and only thing I want to do with this Xperia Play. If I can get to GBA emulation I'd be thrilled, but I can understand if something like that is impossible. Overall, I just wanted to ask you about your recommendations of Custom ROM and Kernel, which SD of which Class and Capacity should I get for it (because I know I'll have to use that in addition to making that SD internal storage somehow, I appreciate advice on that as well), and which consoles can I "reliable" emulate and play in it.
Thanks to everyone for your time.
hello, i just got one myself and from the research I have done it seems its more than capable of emulaiting GBA games. that being said the whole process of "jailbreaking" the device is still a little hazy for me. im trying to find the ost recent guide on how to do so but no real luck so far. iv rooted/jailbroken/modded several systems in my life time but never something like this.....hybrid.... to I consider it a hand held console or an android device (probably the later).
cant wait to have it up and running!!!
EDIT: apparently this is a taboo question. youre just meant to test them all and see which one fits you best... see...

My recommendation is to follow that FAQ link and figure out how to unlock the bootloader, then root the phone. Then just use Root Explorer or some other app to delete unnecessary system apps to free up the internal storage. Don't bother with custom roms and kernels unless you really want to and feel comfortable with it, it just makes it more difficult to deal with. While the device is old, the emulators has improved, so it's not necessary to put custom rom to have a good experience.
The main problem with this phone is lack of internal storage. I recommend to not sign into Google account and not use the Playstore, by the time it updates Playstore and Google Play services, it takes up the entire's phone space (not that there's even enough space to do so) and slow down the entire phone. Just sideload apps.
For the Verizon model R800x, if I remember correctly you can't officially unlock the bootloader, but it run stock Android, instead of the skin version and is pretty light weight. I would just root and delete the bloatware apps. It's possible to install CWM recovery after rooting. I did remember using a third party kernel for R800x device, but I don't remember how I unlocked the bootloader if I did. I rather not care about it now because the R800i GSM version is much more recommended. I remembered the kernel and custom roms were unstable with the R800x, so except for rooting, I really don't think it's worth the time do go to such a depth with this device at this point.

If you already managed to root the phone you're good to go, but if you haven't customize it too much, hold off for now. I'm making a comprehensive guide that will cover all the basics, tips, and useful apps that make this device run great. I saved a lot of firmware and files that are difficult to find anymore. Guide will be done soon, in one or two days.
