Just upgraded to a Galaxy Nexus - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I just upgraded to a Galaxy Nexus from a Sony X10. It was kind of a forced upgrade since my Sony X10 power port died and won't charge the phone. I was outside the year warranty and Rogers wouldn't help with a replacement, figures. Got the Nexus for $99 CND though, but was hit with early upgrade fee :/
Anyway... loving the Nexus so far, but wondering are there issues/concerns or other cool things with the Nexus I should be aware of?

Welcome!

Root it and ROM it and unleash it's full potential! Welcome to the Nexus club!

Upgraded a couple of weeks ago. Didn't have any major issues with NS. Excellent device. the GN is far and away better though. 1 upgrade a year. Nexus line ftw!

Best device, after unlock and root permission i suggest you Franco kernel and some rom with 4.0.3 ICS.

I haven't rooted it yet, but plan on it later. Just really waiting for a rock solid ROM with no hassles.

Have you unlocked the bootloader yet? You'd want to do it as soon a possible because it will wipe your phone.

Another Rogers user, welcome OP!
I'm with Rogers, loving the Galaxy Nexus did an early upgrade to get it...was pretty expensive ($497 with tax! O_O) But its awesome!
Started my smart phone adventures with the Samsung Blackjack 2, Nokia XpressMusic, Xperia x10, iphone 3GS, Samsung Captivate (loved it), Xperia Arc, Nexus S, iphone 4, Another Xperia Arc, Desire Z Unlocked, Desire S Unlocked, A third Xperia Arc, Xperia Ray Unlocked, and a Second Nexus S and now....The Galaxy Nexus! I am obsessed with phones! But I don't think I will be rooting the Galaxy Nexus for a bit, though I love custom ROMS...its about perfect right now!
Anyways enjoy your new phone bro!
***I should note that I am not going to jump around anymore with devices, plan on upgrading every year with the latest Nexus device! Its awesome having "THE" Android device, and having pure Android!!!***

Yea, phone rocks just the way it is, so I'm not messing with custom ROMs ATM. Even though I used plenty of custom ROMs on my Sony X10, but that was a different animal all-together. Going from the Sony X10 to the Galaxy Nexus is a big jump in speed and everything else

Yeah that would be a massive upgrade. The only thing I have found with the Galaxy Nexus is because of the size of the device finding a case locally was hard (I live in Cobourg Ontario, an hour away from Toronto...not the biggest town lol)
So what I did was I bought just a "golla generation mobile" case and removed the velcro (sp?) and moved it up on the case and super glued it in place. The Nexus now fits in and the case shuts perfectly, and the case covers like 98% of the phone...good enough for me : )

To-Do List to Unleash the TRUE Power.
Welcom to Nexus. You will love it! (Get every Update as the first is very nice!)
If you want to unleash all the power of your Galaxy Nexus,
Root it
Unlock Bootloader
Flash CWM
Flash a ROM (I suggest you AOKP)
Flash a Custom Kernel (I suggest you Trinity Kernel or Franco Kernel)
Consider flashing a new Radio (get a list of all radios here! They does dramaticaly improve battery life and data and wifi speed.)
For Root, Unlocking Bootloader and CWM flashing use Galaxy Nexus Toolkit! It's a "One Click Happy Package"
If any questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Glad we're on the same boat, I just ditched my X10 and bought a GNex last weekend! and man I tell you this thing's a beast compared to the X10. I just sold the X10 and it pretty much paid for my GNex. I'd recently bought a case on eBay, I went with SGP's Neo Hybrid. I've heard great reviews on Youtube about the case. I've also unlocked and rooted it, but I haven't put any ROM on it though. Will give it a try when I have time. Although like you said, this things very speedy compared to the X10, I'm very happy with this phone

I also upgraded from an x10 to a GNex. It's the Japanese SC04D flavor, and I had a ton of reboots at first. I actually had the phone replaced and still had the reboots. Then I unlocked the boot loader, flashed it to generic 4.02, and rooted it. Not a single reboot since.
This phone blows the x10 out of the water. I couldn't sell my x10 though, so I'm just using it with my wife as a wifi only phone/NES emulator/web browser. She doesn't want a smart phone for a phone LOL. She like the flip and smash buttons kind I'm still trying to figure out how to make the phone happy with out a sim card though. It asks what language and demands a sim on every boot up

Is The Samsung Galaxy Epic Touch a worthy upgrade?

o you guys think the Galaxy S2 is a worthy upgrade from the nexus s because I have the choice to get one right now and wanted to know you guys opinion?

My buddy has a Nexus S and they're not even close. Go to the T-Mobile store and see for yourself. I always think of the Nexus S as being somewhere in between to Galaxy S and the Galaxy S2 (closer to the first Galaxy haha).
I say wait for the next flagship and not waste your upgrade unless you're itching for a new phone.
it's not an upgrade, the situation i'm in is either get a new phone now or wait 2 more years with the nexus s. Does that change things?

E4GT is a considerably better phone -
Check it out at the store first to compare the two, if it wont extend your current 2-year upgrade time. I got this from the G1, purposely passing on the Nexus One-S4G with the later being the only other phone I would of gotten. I have ZERO regrets! E4gt is a beast and the smoothest android phone ever!

Would you recommend the galaxy nexus

I have a galaxy s 2 I9100 but thinking of getting the galaxy s 2. Would you recommend it?
If I already had an s2, I probably wouldn't get a nexus. But if I had neither and wanted a new Android device, I would have a bit of trouble justifying the S2 over the nexus.
This is a question that has been raised many times in this forum, and ultimately can only be decided by you. No one knows your financial situation when it comes to throwing $650 at a phone, and no one knows what you consider a worthy upgrade or not.
Financial situation has nothing to do with it obviously if I'm considering the phone it means I can afford it. I guess my question is if you're to choose today between a S2 and a nexus which one would u go for?
If you want the latest, go for it, but since I see you're already here on XDA I don't think you have much too worry about.
Well, i guess it's pretty safe to say that almost everyone in GN forum were in this situation and chose nexus in the end, so your answer is that... but, if you already have a gs2, i dont think it's great move, i really think you could wait for the galaxy 3 or something else, i would expect...

I had a G2x which was a solid device.
My decision was based on the fact that mg work pays for me to carry a work phone. It was eligible for an upgrade. I waited for the Nexus. Then cancelled my personal line.
They paid for the phone, the monthly service, I only have to carry one phone instead of two, and I made a couple hundred off my G2x. That's a lot of wins.
Outside the above, I'd still have my G2x. Do I like the Nexus better... yea I do. $650 better... no.
If/when Samsung updates the SGSII to ICS, it'll be somewhat comparable to the Nexus. The SGSII still has plenty of life left. Maybe wait for the next nexus.
Their both sweet phones.

Well that's a different question that what you're asking. You own the S2 already, so you're not choosing whether to buy the S2 or the GN right now.
Pretty obviously if you had them both infront of you and had to pay for either one (you own an older phone and were choosing to upgrade to one of these 2), you'd choose the more recent model, the Galaxy Nexus.

I made the jump from an s2 to the nexus..
I miss the sd card, sharper camera quality, app compatibility (eg. NHL game center) and the size for one handed use.
On the nexus side I like the no lag shutter, the non physical soft keys, ics, and the screen resolution.
Another thing, you can only use the tacky wet applied screen protectors on the nexus because the hard ones will peel if they cover your entire screen due to the curved glass..
I need to jump from g2x to galaxy Nexus. This is the best Android phone I have ever used.
I have a Galaxy Note and the Galaxy Nexus and I would take the Nexus first. Highly recommend.
If that helps you any, I had galaxy s2, sold it for 350 and bought Nexus for 710.
Loved s2, but Nexus is worth every cent.

Happy with Nexus
I'm pretty happy with my Nexus. I'd prefer the volume was a bit louder. And there is a software bug or three. But, yeah, I'd recommend it. And I'm not even rooting it, yet.
I have a Gnex, my partner has a GS2. I thought of swapping with him for about five minutes when I realised my Gnex had no micro SD slot. Then I started using it and now I would not trade it for any phone on the market, SD or no SD.
My partner is always showing off the fancy things that TouchWiz on the GS2 can do and I just think "hmph, bloatware"...but if you like bloatware, by all means get a GS2.
This phone is so simple, yet not so simple that I see myself wanting something else before my contract is up. And I am a phone whore.
I love it. It is beautifully done and a pleasure to own.

Galaxy nexus or Xperia S ?

I am buying it as a gift for my GF who had been an ardent blackberry user ,, and finally wishes to jump into the "real" smartphone market ..
she already has an Ipad so an Iphone4s is a no no ... and the choices pretty much come down to Sony Xperia S vs Galaxy nexus ...
Which is better and why ?
galaxy nexus, since this us a galaxy nexus forums
but i think girls usually prefer the looks of sony
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
Xperia S is probably better for girls with its Facebook interaction and social stuff. The nexus would be better if your girlfriend like flashing roms and root and has big hands.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
Why is an iPhone a no-no because she has an iPad? They compliment each other great.
Just let her decide.. Don't think it'll matter that much since she's coming from BB.
Iphones are made for girls....well imho anyways
The answer is Galaxy Nexus. It's always Galaxy Nexus.
Unless she really wants an Xperia S... for some reason. And I have to agree that an iPhone 4S isn't a bad idea if she's used to iOS. There are pros to both views.
naha…
Girls like Android even if I do not know why… *shrugs*
My sister got pulled from iOS to Android by an HTC Wildfire (which really isn't a great experience).
She now uses an HTC Legend instead of an iPhone4 and will get some HTC One flavour with the ending of her old contract. (I would recommend the V) which does espc. affect women with all the Sense stuff…
A friends GF got an HTC Sensation XE/XT or whatever and her first move was to get to him and have it rooted because she missed some features he had on his phone (with CM7.x)
If you go the Sony route get her the Xperia P not the S. The aluminum on it super svelte.

I'm a girl who jumped from Blackberry to Xperia to Samsung. My son also has an Xperia Play. I love my Gnex, but I'd honestly recommend one of the new Xperias as an introduction to Android.
The build quality on Sony phones feels a lot more solid than Samsung phones. Samsungs just feel kinda cheap and plasticky, IMO. I have a Gnex now simply because I wanted pure stock ICS and updates direct from Google. If that were not important to me, I'd have waited a bit and gotten an Xperia S instead, simply because it's pretty much equivalent as far as hardware goes, and it's also prettier (IMO).
So my vote is to get her the Sony....maybe she'll want a Nexus eventually, like I did, and maybe by then the current Nexus will be something other than a Samsung.

I bought an Xperia S a couple of weeks ago, originally for my wife.
She hated it so I ended up using it.
If you're going to get one, at least wait for the ICS upgrade to see if it fixes the battery issues with Sony's GB rom (or even better, hang on for a good custom rom).
As it stood, I didn't get on with the Xperia S at all, so it sadly ended up on eBay.
I've just replaced it with a gnex, and couldn't I be happier.
The reasons my wife hated it?
The hardware buttons are a bit fiddly. She was forever pressing the back button again and again, trying to get it to register. I found this problem too.
The battery life (as mentioned above, this should be fixed by a software update, eventually)
Performance: the stock .67 sony rom is laden with rubbish. The launcher is laggy and the gb menus are awfully choppy. Again, hopefully the ICS update will cure this.
The screen was excellent though, and the camera was very good, for a phone. A potentially great phone, ruined by the software.
I am a BlackBerry user (please don't hate ). I use a BB on my main line and the Nexus One on my second line. I plan on getting the Galaxy Nexus. The reason why I chose the GNex is because it uses a regular sim and you can remove the battery. The Xperia S uses a micro sim and I change phones often on my second line. I have many micro sim adaptors and they don't work properly. Also correct me if I'm wrong, but the battery of the Xperia S is non removable. That's a dealbreaker for me. I can deal with the internal memory and eventually when all manufacturer's switches over to the micro sim or nano sim. But I like the choice to be able to buy an extended battery or extra battery if I need one. I have small hands and I played around with the GNex. It's not as big as I thought it would be. Also by looking at the specs of both devices, the Xperia S is not that much smaller.
Another thing to keep in mind is your GF is a BB user which means I'm sure she loves the led notification light. The GNex has it and I'm pretty sure the Xperia S has one has well. Sony has been known to have an led notification light. Thought I point that out to you just in case you change your mind and get her an iPhone or the SGSII and she's wondering where the led notification light is, because there isn't one.

Did I pick the right phone?

Verizon offered me any 4G phone on their network today sure to issues with my current phone. Among the phones the rep offered me were: Incredible 4G, Droid Razr Max, Galaxy S3, and the Galaxy Nexus. I went with the latter.
I enjoy AOSP roms, rooting, etc. Did I make the right choice, or should I have picked a next gen phone like the Galaxy S3?

Best phone ever. :good:
I think you definitely have the right phone.
With that said...I think you should have gotten the S3. Sold it for $500 (would have made a quick sale at that price) then picked up a Gnex and profited $250.
That's just me though.
Hands down the best phone I have owned.. I regret trading my first one and plan on keeping this one until the next nexus.

You picked the right phone but I would have grabbed a gs3 and sold it for ~$550 then bought a new or like new nexus and bagged ~$200.
Depends on where you live. Generally skipping on Verizon and getting the GSM nexus would have been better, IMO.
If I were to stick to Verizon, I'd get a RAZR Maxx. The s3 is great compared to most phones. Motorola makes crappy software, but you're a rooter/rommer, so that wouldn't matter.
If you look at the bigger picture, all the phones above are great, so just enjoy.
PS, Dont forget the VZN/Samsung extended battery, you'll need it.

Moto makes crappy software? Moto puts out probably the least Manufacturer bloated software out of any of the big names. Plus they do SOAK tests and actually take input from their users/testers (and anyone can do it, you don't have to be a somebody that knows somebody).
But with all that said...locked bootloaders suck.
honestly, s3 ain't that much improved over gnex. it's just super friggin overhyped.

skiping S3 is strange, coming from S2 international one 2 daysago this phone lags so so that i cried , than the buttery smooth came and now its like my S2 with CM9 / official 4.04 roms. yes S2 was really fast.
but now im started to loving the phone, was never a custom rom guy, using cm9 was only custom i ever used.
now my 2 grypes.....
no stock t9 in dialer
volume of external speaker is dead mute was'nt loud on S2 but but surely better than this.
on otherhand im glad the video it takes has no frame lags like on S2 in low light.

galaxy nexus / cyanogenmod 9

I come from a Samsung Galaxy Spica (I rooted and installed custom roms alot) so any new phone would be an huge improvement, but I really like the Gnex. At first I had it original unrooted and I was a bit surprised when I finally rooted my phone that it was as easy as it was. I don't feel like I could have gotten a better phone atm.

Is it worth getting the S Galaxy Nexus now in 2013?

Hi Guys,
First up I'm from India and have no way of getting my hands on the nexus 4 anytime soon ( with US stocks apparently refreshing on 20th , i doubt ill beat ppl to it ) so i was going to settle for the galaxy nexus instead. I'm getting it for around Rs 22K ( ~ 400 US$) .
The only reason i was going for this is because of the great number of devs for the phone and a good screen. ( Basically the only 2 things i'm looking for - good screen and custom roms). My other options are :
-The Xperia S/SL or ION which i'm also getting for 400$ ,
- Galaxy S 2
- Used galaxy S2 i1900 for 12k( ~ 210 $ about 1/12 years old)
The HTC One X is about Rs 30k( 550$) and the S3 which is quite high as well (600$)/
So is it worth getting the galaxy nexus now
I've had mine for about a year and have no desire to upgrade. The fact that the development community is so active with this device will prolong its life longer than the average phone.
I'm also from India looking to buy Gnex! And I heard that you can get it in Mumbai for 18 k very good deal!
Is absolutely still a superior phone and i highly recommend it still.

I agree with the others, the Gnex is a great phone still. The development community is its greatest asset. As long as I have the latest firmware I am content. The Galaxy S series has good development too.

If you get a good price. It got quite a outdated SoC, but that's alright if you don't care about gaming. Another positive thing is that it will get Ubuntu in the coming weeks, that's actually the only thing that keeps me from getting a new phone (N4/note2) right now.

No "S". Just Galaxy Nexus. The Nexus S is totally different and a lot of places mix up the names.
Just got my Galaxy Nexus (VZW) right after Christmas off eBay (mint condition, for $170). I kept my unlimited data plan, and couldn't be happier. I have never flashed/modded/tinkered with a phone more than the Nexus, and that's 1000% because of this forum and developer community. I love it!
Is it the fastest, most competent phone available today? No. But it's so much damn fun playing with!

Great device but I wouldn't pay $400 for it now. I got mine for about US$300 6 months back when a shop was running special deals. Wait a bit, prices might drop on those other devices, CES and all the new announcements will mean S3 etc might get cheaper soon.
Yes it's worth getting it. I had the galaxy note running cm10.1 and then I bought the galaxy nexus and I am just loving it.

Phone is outdated, better alternatives available. I wouldn't recommend it coz the price is quite high for what you get.
This is still a great phone to use although is 2013, the development community will continue for a time even Nexus 4 was out!
Recommend u grab a Galaxy Nexus XD
P.S. I still using one and do not got any desire to change it

Hi Guys,
First up I'm from India and have no way of getting my hands on the nexus 4 anytime soon ( with US stocks apparently refreshing on 20th , i doubt ill beat ppl to it ) so i was going to settle for the galaxy nexus instead.

Look, is very simple (for me) I bought the phone because: Is a samsung device, 1st to get upgrades, Decent speeds, good looking screen and resolution, unlocked. The only downside I see, and really see, is that the phone does not support external SDCARDS, for me thats a bummer since I dont have unlimited data, so streaming for me is not an option, I like having my stuff saved on a SDCARD. I had 20GB of pictures and music on my Galaxy skyrocket but now on my nexus I can't. For me that's the only mistake with this phone.
If I were you, try to get those 200.00 more an get the S3 (only if is the GT-i9300) if you don't care about always being up to date with the software. But I think your paying to much for the phones, I bought my nexus for 290.00 (e b a y) , and the galaxy S3 is arround 460.00. Those prices are for MINT condition phones. I can also find the S3 new for about 500.00.
Do not get the nexus s under any circumstances you won't get ota updates. I would recommend either the galaxy nexus or LG nexus 4.

I would suggest you wait till Jan end! I spoke to a few ppl who said that the Nexus 4 is going to launch in India and it's under 30k or so.. Wouldn't be surprised if it launches in mid Jan also at 27k maybe.
Galaxy Nexus is a good phone and is aging really well but the SOC just manges to keep up. The Nexus 4 development had just picked up pace and will get only better! I prefer to use a phone during its early development stages to its mature stages. That way it's more fun and you really get to know your phone
Yesterday I almost traded a guy for a galaxy s3, but I played with them side by side an honestly found the galaxy nexus snappier and apps worked better. There are faster phones out there in benchmark scores and gaming but for day to day use I still find the gnex the smoothest and most consistent experience. BTW the guy wasn't surprised I didn't trade because he uses his dads gnex and realised it just works better without all the bloat that the gs3 has. My phone also runs better then my wife's optimus 4x for everything but gaming. Only phone that will replace my gnex is a newer nexus device. Is it just me or did the camera become really good after 4.2?

Some good feedback here...
Glad to know the community is still strong for the Gnex since I just purchased one yesterday for $250.
Also, where is your source that says that American stock for the N4 will be refreshed on the 20th?
I personally got tired of waiting and that is the reason I got the Gnex.
GNEX is a good phone but its been in market for a year now, who knows wut would happen next year
when nexus 4 get good stock, many ppl may move to nexus 4 and leaving gnex less and less popular, its life maybe in question next year
but gnex still going healthy this year, imo, it depends on how long u want to use the phone for
