Convince me to upgrade to galaxy nexus!

I have a nexus S looking to upgrade and I just cant make up my mind between galaxy S2 and galaxy nexus. I was waiting for S3 but it's nothing spectacular and I'll rather save money by getting a cheaper phone.
I obviously love the google experience and really glad how well google supported the nexus S, they got ICS running so well on it with 4.0.4. No other android OEM supports their year old phones like that. And I am not happy at all with how samsung treated the original galaxy S and galaxy S plus.
However I am just not sure about the hardware of the GN. The screen is touted as it's major feature but then I come across this,

How is that supposed to be the "best" screen? And then many tests have confirmed that the nexus has an extremely dim display compared to S2 and other amoled screens. How then is it the best display? Seems like it's just pixel density where it wins among amoled screens.
The other thing which worries me is the GPU and resolution combination. One of the only things my nexus S has really started struggling with is gaming, I surely want my next phone to be really good at it. But is the nexus very good at it with the old GPU but really high resolution?

Why do I see slight lag in there? Can the galaxy nexus not run temple run at stutter free 60FPS?
Lastly I have heard the loudspeaker is on the quieter side? Another strange thing for a samsung phone, how much worse is it than nexus S?

Updates directly from Google, better screen, NFC, Next official Google Rom very likely supported. SGSIII just announced, why get an S2.

Root it and it's the best device on earth.

If you're looking for a reason to get the Galaxy Nexus and posting here you'll just get biased post. If you want it, just get the phone. Sitting there and being obsessed trying to justify your purchase won't get you anywhere, I had this obsession for like 1 week nonstop and gave in. I came from a Nexus S too.
Just do it.

Go to a Verizon store and check it out for yourself.

I say if you aren't sure, then don't get it. Some we have a tendency to look for faults and more faults because of what we read. If you really want it on the other hand, go get it. The negative reviews you see at times will be brushed away because you like the phone you have. There isn't a perfect phone. What makes it perfect is the smile on your face every time you use it.

Just get it.
Don't like it. Return it.

I'm coming from a gs2 from tmobile and believe me the galaxy nexus is very nice. The gs2 development is slow and the phone is a bit laggy vs the GN. I say get it. Don't even bother with touchwiz and get pure Google's ics and way better development and faster updates.

I am using NS and my 1st GNex just came.
For real I don't see a better screen and a faster phone..

Go to the store and play with one and see what you think.
If your after a cheaper phone than the SGS 3 i personally would say get the Gnex over SGS 2 ( i came from an sgs i9000 but my buddy has an s2 ) but its up to you.
Only you can say what you like best.
It depends how you use your phone and how much you flash it etc.
If your just a general user or a "hardcore" user.
They are both pretty much identical apart from the TW of course.

Easy; Don't think, just do it.

I also came from a Nexus S (just within the past 2 weeks actually), but was disappointed in the ICS experience on my Nexus S. I found it to be fairly laggy, especially with multiple apps open.
ICS on the Galaxy Nexus is a much better experience. The speaker volume on the Galaxy Nexus isnt as strong as the Nexus S, but its fine for normal use from what I've found. My screen has been just perfect too.
My recommendation is get the Galaxy Nexus if you are interested. I dont think you'll regret it. Its all the good stuff about the Nexus S plus better battery life and a better screen.

If you have a Nexus S, wait it out. See what Google has in store for Android and the Nexus program. Then invest.

honestly coming from a gnexus user.. i would say go for S3.. gnexus has a weak battery imo and isnt really that smooth( even after installing ROMs etc) compared to my older htc desire hd which is pretty stupid. the speaker is pretty soft but volume+ should fix it. if u hate touchwiz that much just flash a vanilla ICS rom on S3

Nexus S already received the ota. There's nothing to really wait for it. $400 is a really good price for a non contract phone

What makes you NOT want to upgrade/purchase an SIII over a Galaxy Nexus?

There seems to be widespread disappointment in the SIII, but I don't fully understand why. The specs aren't jaw dropping, but they aren't much less than I expected. Other than the very valid "it's not Nexus" and "touchwiz" comments, why would you not upgrade/get a GNexus rather than an SIII? I just ask because I had purchased a GNex but took it back to wait out and see the SIII. However, despite the specs being upgrade over the GNex, people don't see to think it's all that great. Is development worse on the SGS phones?

An even better question could be. Why would you want a gnex over the now coming out to sprint htc evo 4g lte? It's very easily unlocked and easy to root.

It looks, well, bad. Touchwiz deserves to be mentioned again. Most of the upgrades are software specific. It will probably cost an arm and a leg. No quad core in America. To name a few.

Samsung decided to go back to physical buttons, virtual buttons on the galaxy nexus are so slick, to make things worse they brought back the menu button, which Google has been trying to kill, and I couldn't agree more. Plus 4.8" + the space required for physical buttons seems overkill.
The screen is pentile (Again !)
The nexus looks much better with its matte look, the sgs III looks very cheap with all that glosyness :/
The only thing I like about sg III is the 2000 mah battery and the fact that they got rid of the bump on the back found on all galaxy s phones

2. Its fuuugly. What would the ladies say if I walked around with that?

Unless battery life was battery life was significantly better (which it won't be), I wouldn't upgrade. Most things are the same, except for CPU/GPU, Camera sensors and such, internal memory, and TW. Unless someone with an SGS3 came to the Marketplace asking for someone to switch with him for a GNex+some cash?

There's 2 components to any phone, hardware & software. The GNex will always trump other devices in the software portion, and the hardware of the SGS3 is not a substantial upgrade to warrant further thought in changing devices. In my opinion, the most important aspect of a smart phone will always be the software. Without great cutting edge software, the hardware isn't worth ****. Its the software that makes a device a pleasure to use. It let's the user operate their phone with ease, allowing unparalleled customization while not sacrificing the devices utility. Its what we XDA members love about android. With the GNex, that ability is amplified giving the very best android expedience.......In addition, there is really nothing the SGS3 can do that my GNex can't. Only my GNex does it with style.
Development for any device that's not a Nexus will be less. The Nexus devices are built with development in mind, where other devices are built for the average consumer.

The next Nexus will probably be released just like in the Q4 of this year with carriers in the states getting it a few months later, at the latest next year. I would buy this phone for cheap considering it'll get Jellybean and its still a flawless and competitive phone. I'm personally looking to keep mine until late 2013.

It would depend on which carrier you want to use. I say that because I am not convinced the next Nexus will be available on CDMA carriers again. If you plan on going to a GSM carrier, try not to sign a contract with the current GNex. $400 retail is an absolute steal. If you don't mind waiting 8 months and would go GSM, then wait.

Galaxy Nexus Vs. Galaxy S III

I have gone through nine rezouds and probably thus have ample leverage for a different phone. I'm honestly fed up with it at this point. (No none of them were fraud they were legitimately flawed) anyway since you all own one of the devices I figured you could help me make an informed decision. Don't be too biased lol.

if you have the ability to take one or the other, I'd definitely pick the S3.. I played around with a store model for 20 minutes and already loved it so much that I signed a new contract on the spot (my old one with the nexus was near the end of it's life so it was free for me to change). Honestly the S3 is so quick it's not funny and the camera is absolutely amazing.

Not necessarily. I figured I would ask one group who ones one of the phones their opinion. Since the S3 hasn't been released in the US yet I figured I would ask you all. I doubt I can really make a bad decision here.

So im guessing for Verizon? If so i would go with the S3 its newer its a bit bigger and the camera is a phenomenal. You can't go wrong with either but with the nexus you get software superiority but with the S3 you get the hardware superiority.

Eh the S3 software isn't bad coming from an OG epic I didn't like old touchwiz. But the new TW is quite appealing although waiting for Jelly Bean would keep me away from it as I pay so much for it I expect it to run the latest version of android. But development for it should be sufficient.

Which SIII: North American (dual-core) or International (quad-core)? Sick hardware either way... and throw Apex Launcher on if you hate TouchWiz and don't want to root; it rocks on my girlfriend's SII, so I can only imagine on the SIII. I honestly prefer the way my Nexus looks and the stock experience though.

Honestly the S3 does not blow me away like it does for others. I think most of the hype about it is the same as any new phone from month to month. I think the S3 has some great qualities unique to itself as does the Nexus. However, most features can be duplicated with equal performance on the Nexus. Its like going to college. I could have learned the same things for about $20 in late fees at the library. But I would not be able to brag that I have a degree. So if you want the latest and greatest (for the moment) go for the S3. If you prefer a Nexus experience then get a Nexus. Either way you cant go wrong in my opinion.

What did you do to them?

For the same price, I'd say SGS3. The only reason I wouldn't get a SGS3 is because there's not a vast improvement that is worth getting a new phone. But if I had say, a One S, I'd choose the SGS3, the one with the dual A15s instead of 4 A9s.

I was very skeptical which was why I went for the Note first, but the Nexus is really the best smartphone I've ever used. If you care about customization then this is the device to go with, but if you don't mind using the interface that manufacturer/carriers give you, then go with the SIII. I just love how open the Nexus is, so easy to root and customize. If you have not use lots of custom roms before, this device seems very bare and light, but that is the advantage.
I bought the Nexus immediately after the SIII was announced because I didn't felt it was a major upgrade and the Nexus was going for $300 less. The most intensive thing I'll be doing is watch HD 1080p and the Nexus does it smoother than the Note. I feel buying the SIII would be a step backward to the freedom the Nexus provided. It's not pentaband, so I would have to wait for T-Mobile version to use their 3G. My family uses ATT so I can always hand the Nexus to them and not have to worry about 3G compatibilities. Though I heard T-Mobile SIII will support ATT 3G bands. In addition, the American version will be using proprietary Qualcomm CPU and GPU, I would have to wait longer for CM9 and AOKP roms and who knows if the development will be good as international version, which Samsung already released the source code for.
There is a major flaw with Nexus which is lacking microSD slot. Also the SIII use the same Sony camera sensor as iPhone 4S so it will take better photos and have fast shutter like the Nexus.
I'm keeping my eyes on the SIII, but I want to wait till there are lots of stable roms for the T-Mobile version and if the price go down enough by end of year holidays. Right now I rather wait for the next Nexus phone. It seems like a good phone, but isn't ground breaking like the SII was, especially in term of durability like some youtube drop test has shown.

Go Nexus or wait.
Pocketnow.com has a great overview of the GSIII that points out some niggles with how Samsung changed ICS over what you get on the Nexus. Button and menu placement. Terrible keyboard and how the phone is very slippery in hand.
I have a Nexus and Razor Maxx and would not trade either for the SIII.

Do you see yourself using the Galaxy Nexus for another year?

I have been using the HTC Sensation for a year now. I'm thinking of getting a new phone to use for at least a year. The Galaxy Nexus seems to have the best price to performance ratio right now. And I love the great support it gets from Google. If you're in my position, would you get the Galaxy Nexus?? Do you see yourself using the Galaxy Nexus for another year? Why?

Definitely, but then again I keep my phones until they die. My gnexus is my second smart phone, moto droid being first. Does what it needs to, it's quick, and lot of mods for it.

Since I won't be upgrading anymore to keep unlimited data I will be keeping mine regardless of what I buy next. It's paid for and I don't want the feeling of desperation If I need a replacement.

I too had the HTC Sensation. I just recently got the Gnex (GSM) and i am planning on keeping for atleast 2yrs. Even if the next Gnex comes out i don't think i will get it.
PS: Never getting any other phone UNLESS it is a nexus.

I never use to be someone that would waste so much money on phones every year but I find myself buying every Nexus that comes out every year.
I would probably keep the Galaxy Nexus for longer if my screen didn't have terrible stock whites (they are yellow) and terrible banding and gradient issues. All of these screen issues pretty much force me to use black colored themes which are nice, but is severely limiting.
For example, with JB and the lack of themes for it, it pains me to look at the stock screen/color settings on my phone. I don't think a phone should require 3rd party intervention to this degree.
Thus, when I buy the Nexus 4, I'm gonna make sure that it's a winner. I am absolutely enjoying my time with the Galaxy Nexus but I will not go through this annoyance again. Therefore, I'm moving onto the next Nexus ASAP.

Have you tried flashing another kernel like francokernel and tweaking the color multipliers and gamma settings? (I personally don't understand that stuff, but I've played with it a bit to get my whites whiter).

Ill probably stick with it. I feel guilty going from Nexus S to Galaxy Nexus already but it was so worth it ... except the part where the price just keeps going down (~700 to $399 to $349.99)
... depends on how much the Nexus 4 price is.

Oh I definitely tweak the colors using a custom kernel. Wouldn't be able to live without it.
My point is, however, that it reliance on a custom kernel and inverted Gapps shouldn't be necessary for my phone to look normal.
Right now I'm on JB and would love to stick to the stock kernel for performance and battery life but I'm forced onto Franco kernel for the color tweaks. That's the kind of limitations I'm talking about. This shouldn't be so.

I would love to use SGN as long as i keep getting new updates from google after using JellyBean on my SGN it makes the best smartphone i ever used

I see myself keeping it. Now with jelly bean LTE, I'm set. Since its the nexus, it will get all the updates first and the phone has one of the best developer communities.

I've never considered it.
The last thing I want is a refurbished Galaxy Nexus that may have tons of other problems. At least I know my problems here are restricted to the display.

Oh...hm are you sure Google would send a refurb rather than a new device? When did you buy it? Usually refurbs are used only if the device is an older model...though that's through carriers, who knows what Google will do.
I just found that Google actually has phone support for Nexus devices. If you head to www.google.com/nexus and follow the support link. They might be able to help you get a new device.

I'm keeping it. Love the phone, unless the next Nexus is a huge step up then I will not bother upgrading... we'll definitely be getting upgraded to whatever the next Nexus ships with so I'll be happy with this for a long time.

Verizon offered me any 4G phone on their network today sure to issues with my current phone. Among the phones the rep offered me were: Incredible 4G, Droid Razr Max, Galaxy S3, and the Galaxy Nexus. I went with the latter.
I enjoy AOSP roms, rooting, etc. Did I make the right choice, or should I have picked a next gen phone like the Galaxy S3?

For AOSP and rooting..... Nothing beats a nexus. Would have been a tough choice to pass up the S3 though..... But i probably still would have done the same as you did. After having other phones, nothing beats a nexus IMO

I think you definitely have the right phone.
With that said...I think you should have gotten the S3. Sold it for $500 (would have made a quick sale at that price) then picked up a Gnex and profited $250.
That's just me though.

Hands down the best phone I have owned.. I regret trading my first one and plan on keeping this one until the next nexus.

Depends on where you live. Generally skipping on Verizon and getting the GSM nexus would have been better, IMO.
If I were to stick to Verizon, I'd get a RAZR Maxx. The s3 is great compared to most phones. Motorola makes crappy software, but you're a rooter/rommer, so that wouldn't matter.
If you look at the bigger picture, all the phones above are great, so just enjoy.
PS, Dont forget the VZN/Samsung extended battery, you'll need it.

Moto makes crappy software? Moto puts out probably the least Manufacturer bloated software out of any of the big names. Plus they do SOAK tests and actually take input from their users/testers (and anyone can do it, you don't have to be a somebody that knows somebody).
But with all that said...locked bootloaders suck.

honestly, s3 ain't that much improved over gnex. it's just super friggin overhyped.

Isn't he on verizon?

Only one thing bad thing about this phone that bothers me. Speaker, i know about V+, but even with that its still the worst
I recommend a Nexus because its never meant to be a "flavor of the month phone". If the you like the specs, and you know how to use this site. Then you will love it till your next Nexus

As in buying the s3, selling it, and buying a nexus. Wouldn't he have to activate the phone on verizon?
I'm not sure how verizon works when it comes to switching phones.

skiping S3 is strange, coming from S2 international one 2 daysago this phone lags so so that i cried , than the buttery smooth came and now its like my S2 with CM9 / official 4.04 roms. yes S2 was really fast.
but now im started to loving the phone, was never a custom rom guy, using cm9 was only custom i ever used.

volume of external speaker is dead mute was'nt loud on S2 but but surely better than this.
on otherhand im glad the video it takes has no frame lags like on S2 in low light.

Something is wrong with your gnex...if you find it slower than the old gs2 running buggy cm9

If it was a choice between an S3 and a GSM gnex, I'd rather have the gnex. But if I had to be on Verizon, I'd probably take the S3. But either way, you got a good phone and shouldn't worry about it.

I come from a Samsung Galaxy Spica (I rooted and installed custom roms alot) so any new phone would be an huge improvement, but I really like the Gnex. At first I had it original unrooted and I was a bit surprised when I finally rooted my phone that it was as easy as it was. I don't feel like I could have gotten a better phone atm.
