I have a nexus S looking to upgrade and I just cant make up my mind between galaxy S2 and galaxy nexus. I was waiting for S3 but it's nothing spectacular and I'll rather save money by getting a cheaper phone.
I obviously love the google experience and really glad how well google supported the nexus S, they got ICS running so well on it with 4.0.4. No other android OEM supports their year old phones like that. And I am not happy at all with how samsung treated the original galaxy S and galaxy S plus.
However I am just not sure about the hardware of the GN. The screen is touted as it's major feature but then I come across this,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1394358
How is that supposed to be the "best" screen? And then many tests have confirmed that the nexus has an extremely dim display compared to S2 and other amoled screens. How then is it the best display? Seems like it's just pixel density where it wins among amoled screens.
The other thing which worries me is the GPU and resolution combination. One of the only things my nexus S has really started struggling with is gaming, I surely want my next phone to be really good at it. But is the nexus very good at it with the old GPU but really high resolution?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rElZzjJk3yM
Why do I see slight lag in there? Can the galaxy nexus not run temple run at stutter free 60FPS?
Lastly I have heard the loudspeaker is on the quieter side? Another strange thing for a samsung phone, how much worse is it than nexus S?
Updates directly from Google, better screen, NFC, Next official Google Rom very likely supported. SGSIII just announced, why get an S2.
Root it and it's the best device on earth.

If you're looking for a reason to get the Galaxy Nexus and posting here you'll just get biased post. If you want it, just get the phone. Sitting there and being obsessed trying to justify your purchase won't get you anywhere, I had this obsession for like 1 week nonstop and gave in. I came from a Nexus S too.
Just do it.
Not sure whether or not to get it?
Go to a Verizon store and check it out for yourself.
I say if you aren't sure, then don't get it. Some we have a tendency to look for faults and more faults because of what we read. If you really want it on the other hand, go get it. The negative reviews you see at times will be brushed away because you like the phone you have. There isn't a perfect phone. What makes it perfect is the smile on your face every time you use it.
Just get it.
Don't like it. Return it.
Thing is, you'll love it.

I'm coming from a gs2 from tmobile and believe me the galaxy nexus is very nice. The gs2 development is slow and the phone is a bit laggy vs the GN. I say get it. Don't even bother with touchwiz and get pure Google's ics and way better development and faster updates.

I am using NS and my 1st GNex just came.
For real I don't see a better screen and a faster phone..
comparing both using stock lastest 4.0.4 rom...
Why do we need to convince you? What is in it for us?
Go to the store and play with one and see what you think.
If your after a cheaper phone than the SGS 3 i personally would say get the Gnex over SGS 2 ( i came from an sgs i9000 but my buddy has an s2 ) but its up to you.
Only you can say what you like best.
It depends how you use your phone and how much you flash it etc.
If your just a general user or a "hardcore" user.
They are both pretty much identical apart from the TW of course.
Easy; Don't think, just do it.

I also came from a Nexus S (just within the past 2 weeks actually), but was disappointed in the ICS experience on my Nexus S. I found it to be fairly laggy, especially with multiple apps open.
ICS on the Galaxy Nexus is a much better experience. The speaker volume on the Galaxy Nexus isnt as strong as the Nexus S, but its fine for normal use from what I've found. My screen has been just perfect too.
My recommendation is get the Galaxy Nexus if you are interested. I dont think you'll regret it. Its all the good stuff about the Nexus S plus better battery life and a better screen.
If you have a Nexus S, wait it out. See what Google has in store for Android and the Nexus program. Then invest.

honestly coming from a gnexus user.. i would say go for S3.. gnexus has a weak battery imo and isnt really that smooth( even after installing ROMs etc) compared to my older htc desire hd which is pretty stupid. the speaker is pretty soft but volume+ should fix it. if u hate touchwiz that much just flash a vanilla ICS rom on S3

I have a galaxy s 2 I9100 but thinking of getting the galaxy s 2. Would you recommend it?
If I already had an s2, I probably wouldn't get a nexus. But if I had neither and wanted a new Android device, I would have a bit of trouble justifying the S2 over the nexus.
This is a question that has been raised many times in this forum, and ultimately can only be decided by you. No one knows your financial situation when it comes to throwing $650 at a phone, and no one knows what you consider a worthy upgrade or not.
Financial situation has nothing to do with it obviously if I'm considering the phone it means I can afford it. I guess my question is if you're to choose today between a S2 and a nexus which one would u go for?
If you want the latest, go for it, but since I see you're already here on XDA I don't think you have much too worry about.
Well, i guess it's pretty safe to say that almost everyone in GN forum were in this situation and chose nexus in the end, so your answer is that... but, if you already have a gs2, i dont think it's great move, i really think you could wait for the galaxy 3 or something else, i would expect...

I had a G2x which was a solid device.
My decision was based on the fact that mg work pays for me to carry a work phone. It was eligible for an upgrade. I waited for the Nexus. Then cancelled my personal line.
They paid for the phone, the monthly service, I only have to carry one phone instead of two, and I made a couple hundred off my G2x. That's a lot of wins.
Outside the above, I'd still have my G2x. Do I like the Nexus better... yea I do. $650 better... no.
If/when Samsung updates the SGSII to ICS, it'll be somewhat comparable to the Nexus. The SGSII still has plenty of life left. Maybe wait for the next nexus.
Their both sweet phones.

Well that's a different question that what you're asking. You own the S2 already, so you're not choosing whether to buy the S2 or the GN right now.
Pretty obviously if you had them both infront of you and had to pay for either one (you own an older phone and were choosing to upgrade to one of these 2), you'd choose the more recent model, the Galaxy Nexus.

I made the jump from an s2 to the nexus..
I miss the sd card, sharper camera quality, app compatibility (eg. NHL game center) and the size for one handed use.
On the nexus side I like the no lag shutter, the non physical soft keys, ics, and the screen resolution.
Another thing, you can only use the tacky wet applied screen protectors on the nexus because the hard ones will peel if they cover your entire screen due to the curved glass..
I need to jump from g2x to galaxy Nexus. This is the best Android phone I have ever used.
I have a Galaxy Note and the Galaxy Nexus and I would take the Nexus first. Highly recommend.
If that helps you any, I had galaxy s2, sold it for 350 and bought Nexus for 710.
Loved s2, but Nexus is worth every cent.

Happy with Nexus
I'm pretty happy with my Nexus. I'd prefer the volume was a bit louder. And there is a software bug or three. But, yeah, I'd recommend it. And I'm not even rooting it, yet.
I have a Gnex, my partner has a GS2. I thought of swapping with him for about five minutes when I realised my Gnex had no micro SD slot. Then I started using it and now I would not trade it for any phone on the market, SD or no SD.
My partner is always showing off the fancy things that TouchWiz on the GS2 can do and I just think "hmph, bloatware"...but if you like bloatware, by all means get a GS2.
This phone is so simple, yet not so simple that I see myself wanting something else before my contract is up. And I am a phone whore.
I love it. It is beautifully done and a pleasure to own.

Only thing that makes the nexus sad to me is the camera....... D: 5mp compared to most others with 8mp is not worth it -_- but on the other hand it has freaking ICS which looks so nice

i use my Gnex more than my SGS2. pure vanilla 4.0 is awesome! i cant bring myself to use Touchwiz and Sense anymore. I dont use vanilla/CM on sgs2 cuz lack of some drivers.
so yeah, gnex ftw! and from now on, nexus line for me. i would never repeat the same mistake buying other powerful device until next Nexus. i dont care if its powerful or not, i'll get Nexus.
For something that you look at multiple times a day, you'll never feel bored. At the moment the maximum screen time I'm getting is about 2.5 hours a day. It's more than enough for me. If I were a power user I would get the Maxx of all the phones out there, but since I'm not this is perfect for me.
I have an IPad and love it, but phone wise ICS is much better than iOS.
I have gone through nine rezouds and probably thus have ample leverage for a different phone. I'm honestly fed up with it at this point. (No none of them were fraud they were legitimately flawed) anyway since you all own one of the devices I figured you could help me make an informed decision. Don't be too biased lol.

if you have the ability to take one or the other, I'd definitely pick the S3.. I played around with a store model for 20 minutes and already loved it so much that I signed a new contract on the spot (my old one with the nexus was near the end of it's life so it was free for me to change). Honestly the S3 is so quick it's not funny and the camera is absolutely amazing.

Not necessarily. I figured I would ask one group who ones one of the phones their opinion. Since the S3 hasn't been released in the US yet I figured I would ask you all. I doubt I can really make a bad decision here.
So im guessing for Verizon? If so i would go with the S3 its newer its a bit bigger and the camera is a phenomenal. You can't go wrong with either but with the nexus you get software superiority but with the S3 you get the hardware superiority.

Eh the S3 software isn't bad coming from an OG epic I didn't like old touchwiz. But the new TW is quite appealing although waiting for Jelly Bean would keep me away from it as I pay so much for it I expect it to run the latest version of android. But development for it should be sufficient.

Which SIII: North American (dual-core) or International (quad-core)? Sick hardware either way... and throw Apex Launcher on if you hate TouchWiz and don't want to root; it rocks on my girlfriend's SII, so I can only imagine on the SIII. I honestly prefer the way my Nexus looks and the stock experience though.
Honestly the S3 does not blow me away like it does for others. I think most of the hype about it is the same as any new phone from month to month. I think the S3 has some great qualities unique to itself as does the Nexus. However, most features can be duplicated with equal performance on the Nexus. Its like going to college. I could have learned the same things for about $20 in late fees at the library. But I would not be able to brag that I have a degree. So if you want the latest and greatest (for the moment) go for the S3. If you prefer a Nexus experience then get a Nexus. Either way you cant go wrong in my opinion.

For the same price, I'd say SGS3. The only reason I wouldn't get a SGS3 is because there's not a vast improvement that is worth getting a new phone. But if I had say, a One S, I'd choose the SGS3, the one with the dual A15s instead of 4 A9s.

I was very skeptical which was why I went for the Note first, but the Nexus is really the best smartphone I've ever used. If you care about customization then this is the device to go with, but if you don't mind using the interface that manufacturer/carriers give you, then go with the SIII. I just love how open the Nexus is, so easy to root and customize. If you have not use lots of custom roms before, this device seems very bare and light, but that is the advantage.
I bought the Nexus immediately after the SIII was announced because I didn't felt it was a major upgrade and the Nexus was going for $300 less. The most intensive thing I'll be doing is watch HD 1080p and the Nexus does it smoother than the Note. I feel buying the SIII would be a step backward to the freedom the Nexus provided. It's not pentaband, so I would have to wait for T-Mobile version to use their 3G. My family uses ATT so I can always hand the Nexus to them and not have to worry about 3G compatibilities. Though I heard T-Mobile SIII will support ATT 3G bands. In addition, the American version will be using proprietary Qualcomm CPU and GPU, I would have to wait longer for CM9 and AOKP roms and who knows if the development will be good as international version, which Samsung already released the source code for.
There is a major flaw with Nexus which is lacking microSD slot. Also the SIII use the same Sony camera sensor as iPhone 4S so it will take better photos and have fast shutter like the Nexus.
I'm keeping my eyes on the SIII, but I want to wait till there are lots of stable roms for the T-Mobile version and if the price go down enough by end of year holidays. Right now I rather wait for the next Nexus phone. It seems like a good phone, but isn't ground breaking like the SII was, especially in term of durability like some youtube drop test has shown.
Go Nexus or wait.
Pocketnow.com has a great overview of the GSIII that points out some niggles with how Samsung changed ICS over what you get on the Nexus. Button and menu placement. Terrible keyboard and how the phone is very slippery in hand.
I have a Nexus and Razor Maxx and would not trade either for the SIII.

3 days ago, the Galaxy Nexus was the first and the only device to receive the latest version of android : Jelly Bean.
This version adds so much smoothness and improvements to ICS that some people are giving up on buying the S3 coming from the Nexus.
Assuming S2<S3, you just got a logical explaination to as why you should get the Galaxy Nexus ( GSM if you can ).
Not an other on, gotta get a post in before the mods come

Here are the strengths of both phones over each other,
S2 over nexus
- Better camera
- Better GPU performance which doesnt mean much in day to day usage but for sure matters in 3D gaming as you get higher FPS
- More compact
- SD card slot
- Better speaker
- Better accessory market
Nexus over S2
- Bigger and better screen
- Much better future software support
- Looks way better in my opinion
- LED notification
- Better audio quality from headphones
The fact that the nexus S is getting jelly bean is huge, just goes to show how freaking long the galaxy nexus is going to be supported. That alone to me is far bigger advantage than all the other advantages the S2 has.
I'll say the biggest con of the galaxy nexus is the really weak speaker and only 16GB memory for the GSM version.
The biggest con of S2 is the low resolution screen and poor future software support.
If you have to think about it just get the S2. To even second guess the nexus is an insult to us. Its an amazing phone.

I picked the Nexus over the S3 and One X, so I would definitely pick it over the S2.
After using stock android, Jelly Bean in particular, everything else is really awful to me. Touch wiz is so bad. The Touchwiz apps are not very nice looking compared to stock ics/JB. I would get the Nexus for sure. I even highly value camera Quality and I decided that having better software is more important than camera.
Today I bought galaxy nexus and sold my Galaxy S II... I love Galaxy nexus bcoz of wide screen, better UI and direct support from Google beating apple.. hehehe I love you nexus ... I lost interest in SII bcoz SII Sucks with no more support from jelly bean very soon... even updating 4.0.4 version might get long month.

There's no need to think such thing, SGS2 is not even close to GN. The screen resolution itself is hideous.

I can confirm what has been written above. I sold my international S2 i9100, which I really loved!
Exynos with Mali 400 outperforms TI-OMAP 4460 with its PowerVR SGX540 I guess in every single test. (for example in case of Nenamark2 the difference is 48-52:28-32!) S2 has gorilla glass and better camera (8 mpix + 2 mpix), sd-slot, even hard home button can be considered as an advantage.
On the other hand. Nexus has much better screen, NFC, and great support! It depend what your priorities are but...If you're into aosp/cm world Nexus is far better solution.
Official updates. Even though I think samsung is the fastest update-provider among all manufacturers still S2 got recently...its second 4.0.4 update while GNex has 4.1.2! Samsung confirmed S2 to be scheduled to JB-update in november, but I highly doubt it'll be given more than this. In case of Nexus....I'm certain it'll be supported at least 12 more months.
Moreover...exynos is closed hardware, (while omap is dev's beloved device) which makes it extremely hard for devs to get fully functioning aosp rom. You can see the difference if you compare CM10 on both handsets.
- S2 - no jb-hwcomposer and thus no v-sync, no butter - jittery and yes laggy, problems with audio.
- GNex - almost perfectly smooth! I know that lot of people here complain over smoothness but seriously there's nothing to complain. IT's one of the smoothest android experience today even if you compare it to hardware monsters like international variant of S3.
Smoothness of stock roms cannot be even discussed here. Nexus wins fair and square. So...who cares what benchmarks say? The device is as good as the software running on it.
I wish this had gorilla glass while reinforced also its not as strong it scratches easily compared to my S1 it has small nicks on it and has been though worst then my nexus an nexus has a good 5 big scratches and also cracked display

I had both for a while, i really think the gnex outperforms the gs2 in every single way, sure gs2 have a better camera and it was pretty fast with gingerbread but it failed to delivery the same experience with ICS...and it took sooo much time to samsung release ics and with crappy touchwizz wich was the same skin as in gingerbread.
The gs2 has very low resolution and ppi screen so the gpu as an easy time. The iphonish home button really sucked balls. Basically gs2 is already outdated and doesnt deliver the same user experience as the gnex. IMHO.

I still have my i9100, purchased it before the nexus. there are things I prefer on it over the nexus, but not deal breakers.
The s2 has much better standard screen colors than the nexus, I had to tweak using a kernel that support color tweaking to get the same colors that pleased me on the s2.. However, after spending time on the higher resolution nexus screen, the s2 looks real bad.. But prior to purchasing the nexus I thought the s2 screen resolution was fine, but I did not have anything to compare it to.
Call quality I find to be much better on the nexus, much clearer voices.
Cameras.. I don't use them much so I don't have an opinion on it. as long as the phone takes pictures, I'm happy.
Wifi is much better on the s2.. I have fought with constant disconnects on the nexus hardware, while the s2 always had rock steady Wifi.
Speed... This depends on what you use the phone for. I do not play alot of games. I do not doubt the s2 has faster hardware to run games better, however I find the nexus offers a much more fluid experience when doing everything else. Simple things as such as dialing a phone number, typing, scrolling, and the nexus much more responsive and fluid. there are no annoying pauses or lags. the s2 no matter what rom I was using always had some sort of lag.
Ever thing just works on the nexus, while alot of things on the s2 were compromises. you get one feature but another was broken, especially when using custom roms.
I'm going to hang onto my s2 until the official jb release and see if jb can make it run as well as the nexus... If not, I'll be selling it.

That's right and Touchwizz is extremely ugly but ...ICS on Galaxy Nexus was laggy as hell to be honest, sometimes even worse than in case of S2. For example if you applied live wallpapers. I have never noticed any single scroll-lag on S2 (stock ICS rom), on GNex it was unfortunately pretty common.
Just switched from an i777 to the gal nex and I would never go back...the screen alone is enough...not to mention instant shutter speed on the camera, first to update, I've had much better battery life...plus when you go to a custom ROM, compared to the s2, everything just WORKS...and for $350 you won't regret it

s2 was my first android, gave it to my dad and now using gnex.
fundamentally the gnex has a higher screen resolution, but no hardware keys on the front so nav buttons are a must on it.. s2 has buttons, and side by side, the displays are actually a bit identical. the gnex looks somewhat better because of the higher ppi, but pentile is visible on text when you see it very closely..
performance wise, both have almost the same cpu specs, but gnex is slightly slower. its because of the higher resolution. and i can tell you this without any benchmark numbers. i tried fpse on both, there's a slight lag on the gnex. the sgs2 runs it smoothly..
jellybean on gnex is stable (of course) and awesome. on the s2, not so much...
all games/apps work on both, with slight differences in things like emulation as i said above..
battery life on both is more or less the same, both are battery hogs. but after using them both for well over two months each, i can say that gnex sucks from 100 to 0 slightly faster.. an extended battery wouldn't be such a bad idea, i personally bought myself an anker 5600mah portable charger, and it does the job for me battery life wise. easily get through the day with super heavy use (navigation, browsing hsdpa, etc)
if you're gonna buy one of these TODAY, it makes no sense to get a s2. nexus is cheaper, and you are guaranteed Key lime pie immediately, and even possible L-- version.. yes the camera is a bit bad compared to the s2, but it's a small trade off for the price difference and software update frequency.

I've heard about it but never experienced it myself because I've rooted and installed a custom rom+kernel in the second day i had it. I think that was with android 4.0.2 witch i never run on my phone. The only "stock" firmware i had was the jelly bean leak and it was great.

yeah but my xperia play beats both and have crappy hardware...why?
Same goes for some gameloft games like gangster in Rio or something like that runs beautifully on my xperia play and it is unplayable on the gnex.

I just recently got a gnex and gave my wife my gs2. I would never even think of going back. Might not ever own another non nexus phone. definitely the better phone imo.

That's exactly what I think I sold my S2, bought nexus....and today I bought my father a brand new S2 as a birthday gift. While i was configuring everything....I was like "Oh my how sluggish it is compared to Nexus". No more non-nexus androids!
can't ever go back to touchwiz... I used sgs2 i9100...love nexus software

Can't beat the nexus experience. I still have my i777, rooted weeks after I got it, and have loved tinkering, and tweaking the hell out of it ever since. Both phones are more than capable of remaining relevant for some time, but as I said, it's the Google flagship experience that really seals it. I love my s2, aokp with siyah is amazing, but I've had my nexus for just shy of 2 months now, and I honestly haven't found a reason to root it, official jb is just that good for me. Google wallet is about the only thing I've found that one phone has over the other, though Nfc is fully functional on the s2, aside from the secure hardware element needed for wallet. Not sure what the going rate is on the s2 anymore, but at best its just as good a deal as the gsm nexus right now. Long story short(kind of rambling, I apologize) love both phones, wouldn't ever discourage anyone from the s2, but of this comparison, I'd advise the gnex to anyone.
Pink pony Gs2 i777
Pure Google Gnex i9250
Pink stallion Gs3 i747
Stock tweaked Asus tf201
S2 is fast, like other people said, it out performs Gnexus a lot imo. Even on TW GB/ICS or AOSP, its still faster. Exynos are really good. But then, you wont get a proper OTA if you want JB or latest update in the future. I love the brick look of SGS2 though. when the screen is off, it looks so sexy. but gnex are sexy in both screen on and off.
For me, having the latest software in any hardware are important for me.So I am sticking with Gnex. I gave my S2 to my mum, and bought myself a One X. But then I still use Gnexus most of the time for pretty much everything. Cuz it has official Jellybean and all custom roms are stable enough since it is already an AOSP to begin with. One X still have some trouble with ICS/JB AOSP, so only choice to stick with Sense ICS for stability.
my friend always ask me if its worth to get a Gnex since it is 1 year old already. My answer for them are simple, if you care about updates every time they are announced, Gnex is the answer. and also, if you intent to use it to the fullest(3/4 years duration), its Gnex. Otherwise, buy anything you like. I always change phones, but Nexus is the one i wont replace until a next nexus(if they tempt me enough).
I got 2 phone. but i prefer GNX than GS2. GS2 outperform GNX but overall GNX better than GS2
Depends which s2 as well. I had the s2 skyrocket with the s3 processor and its a laggy pos next to the nexus. Lte was awesome and the camera pwns the gnex but that's it. I've had every nexus and every time I've strayed to get another phone I end up having nexus envy.
So the nexus is really that much better than the s2 skyrocket
