Radioactive Solar Storm To Disrupt GPS And Other Communications Systems... - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

...as of today!!!
http://www.cnn.com/2012/01/24/world/europe/solar-flare-nasa/index.html

Horray!!! More radiation for us to bake in

So I take it the speed tests from flashing my new modem are going to be less-than-truthful at the moment.

I haven't noticed any difference in GPS performance

This happens more often than you know. It must be a slow news day today.
Ask someone that's Ham radio operator and they'll say the same. Sometimes solar activity makes radio waves go nearer or farther than normal. Sometimes it heavily attenuates radio signals. Or, maybe that's the end of the world solar flare that toasts everything on the planet like in the movie 2012.

LOL... But actually that was the movie "Knowing" wasn't it?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App

Yes it was the movie "Knowing".

I don't know, GPS might not be affected but this could happen...

LOL @ the guy doing the seal/walrus XD.

And, of course, absolutely nothing deleterious happened whatsoever in North America. These predictions are ridiculous, yet they keep making them every solar flare above an M5.

radar detection program.

Does anyone know of any radar detection program for windows mobile 6 ?
I'm talking of the radar that traffic department use to detect you speed on the road. I know gadgets exist that detect the devices and give you early warning. iv'e heard the nokia phones have such a program, does anyone know if one exists for windows mobile phones ?

Tomtom only warns you about the permanent cameras, it does not detect radar, laser or "instant on" radar signals!!!
Yes i am talking about the live instant radar devices. the guy standing on the side of the road with the radar cam.
NOT the permenent camara's.
I need the phone to beep and warn me when a radar device is in close proximity.
Oh God... you can't be serious...
Re the nokia phone, check here:
http://www.warp2search.net/contentt...ia_mobile_phone_as_a_police_radar_detect.html
It's been proven and proven again - it doesn't work... The only part of your phone I could see somebody trying to say would work is the IR receiver, but IR and RADAR are two ENTIRELY different things. And even if your phone could detect RADAR or Laser (which, again, none can) - you'd have to place the phone somewhere on your windshield to make it useful - and given the Hermes configuration, you'd have to have your phone horizontal... Even if it did work, I'd not want the thing sitting all goofy in my windshield.
With all due respect this is one of the goofier requests I've ever seen on here.
In other words - buy a radar detector... A half-way decent one can be had for under $60

I had no idea, that this joke from early GSM will resurface again in PDAs. The only other popular GSM lamer-tester I know about was Polish invention of "marupy zwrotne" ~ "return/confirmation marupas" (yes, it makes no sense in Polish neither, but sounds... dumb and probable at the same time).
Do you know of any other gossip/fake GSM/PDA services that were used to joke of not-so-bright users?
Sorry, i think, that if you want to use the Hermes as radar detector, you can use it as microwave oven. The WiFi module works on 2,4 GHz like the oven too.

Just the whole horror story about cell phone towers in residential places has no scientific basis at all. The same people scaremongering about this stuff are probably responsible for this one:
In scotland a plan to build a wind farm, 10 or so wind turbines, was refused due to concerns by the local community about the risk of radiation!?!?!?! WTF!!!!!
Besides the mobile phone<->tumor thing has been disproven many times by (independant) scientific study, the public always go along with these STUPID rumours.
Of course it's stupid as hell. Why those people still use TV sets (after all CRT and plasmas are quite effective x-rays lamps), electric engine-based household devices (this is really powerful electromagnetic source) and microwave ovens (that in fact are causing problems with WLAN and some cell phone devices). And what about those electric cables in the walls? Slightly exaggerating those are giant antennas emitting 50/60Hz waves at very high power.
So if you (the reader, not mrvanx of course) are anti-cell phone tower activist, start with canceling you contract with company that delivers power to your house. Then we can continue talking.

Remember the email that said you could unlock any car that used a remote keyless system?
http://www.snopes.com/autos/techno/keyless.asp
the original point
regarding the RADAR guns that law enforcments use...
(i know about this i have 11 points on my license (3 have already come off once) and done the speed aware ness corse)
i do beleive they use a few different devices and on different frequancies, the devices you have in your car dont always detect the RADAR and they also change progressivly so you would need to keep buying the latests detectors... not to mention if you are speeding and your detector (even your phone is you got it to work (not likely)) picks up a signal and warns you... its already hit you the gun already knows how fast your traveling and its all too late!!
there are devices that emit a scramble frequancy and the copper will just get ERR on the gun but again they change the frequancy or method (lasers or RADAR) and your still boned and in UK if your caught with one of them you can then be prosicuted for preventing the corse of justice...
all in all its not worth it... the Tom Toms and the likes have notifacations for fixed cameras and 'black spots' were there is offten coppers park (this doesnt mean they wont change spots and they might never be there as you drive past but thought it was worth a mention)
If you want to find radars open your nostrils... They usualy smell like onions...
Cheers and good luck.

A quick review after 48 hours use

I have had the phone, bought from phones 4U contract free for the past few days and i wanted to give my views for people who may be undecided if it is a sound purchase. Just for the record i still have my iPhone 4 & Desire HD, so i am not biased.....
I was unsure about the form factor when reading the specs, but the lack of hardware buttons means it is literally 95% screen real estate, the display is a thing of beauty. I know others have reported colour issues, but i have not had problems with yellow hue. Or any other display issues. It also feels light but sturdy, i'm sure you will have seen the scratch test video. I'm confident that the screen will stay scratch free unless i drop it (To be fair i will probably drop it)
ICS - It is a great update for android. People have commented about it not being intuitive or user friendly. I spent the first few hours setting things up and finding my way around the OS and while it takes some getting used to it is far better than gingerbread. It is of course biased to Google+ - people who have concerns about not being able to sync their facebook contact pictures should use "syncmypix" it has done a great job populating my phonebook pictures. I have had some force closes, and apps from the market do need an update due to some compatibility issues. As this is a software issue i am not concerned. I would like to add that the face unlock is actually very good. I set the "gimmick unlock" to test it, and it has proved to be more than adequate for day to day use. It does not work in low light, but again hardly a surprise.
GPS is also excellent on the phone seeing a connection established nearly instantly.
I must be missing something with the connecting to other hardware issue. I guess people use their smartphones differently, but from my point of view i connect my phone to my PC to transfer files back and forth and sometimes tether my laptop to use the internet. Both of these things work fine and quickly, so i am clearly missing the issue.
The camera: Ok, the camera isn't going to set the world on fire. In the right lighting it takes a pretty decent snap, but if you are looking for a phone with a heavy emphasis on photos it probably isnt for you. No software updates will change that. I do like the instant shutter speed and it comes with some nice effects.
The battery: Hmmmm the jury is out on the battery. I usually like to cycle the battery over a few days till it settles down, i can then make a valid comment. So far though the battery is giving me approx 12 hours of use, i would consider myself a heavy user (It's a new phone and i'm playing with it lots)
Overall - If you love tech, and are an early adopter it's a great phone. The OS is lightening fast and the display is great. If you want something that 'Just works' i would hold on.
I HAVE NOT HAD THE VOLUME PROBLEMS THAT OTHERS HAVE COMMENTED ON. LITERALLY NOT ONCE.
Please feel free to ask anything about the phone, or if you would like me to try something out just let me know.
Cheers

Good to know about the battery. I've heard many bad things about the battery life, so it's good to know that yours is lasting as long as one would expect.
Please post what operator you're one so that we can determine if it's all handsets that are being plagued by the volume problems, or just some or most.
I'm with Optus in Australia and I'm fairly certain that they operate on the 900Mhz GSM frequency

Screen brightness auto. No live wallpapers. Two full charges. One gmail account on push and one Exchange on push. I browsed Reddit for about 10-15minutes after waking up and that saw the battery down about 6% or so.
Since then I listened to Spotify on the walk to work (15mins). I've replied to some texts, installed/used a network Speed Test app once, showed the camera to a friend and took a panorama. And played with a few settings. Nothing intensive.

Actual screen on time was 1h9m for 6h1m49s on battery. The % was where the battery was going (as displayed in the battery part of Settings).
I guess it's okay, but I'm used to a lot higher from my previous iPhone 4 and HTC Radar. But I guess they also didn't have 4.65" 720p displays
I've turned off Exchange push for now, as I don't really care about getting work emails on it anyway. Will see if that improves things, as read some vague topics saying that Exchange is a battery hog.

Now, two things. One, this should not be in the development section. Two, it's a question you really could have resolved yourself.

Your head is thousand times more baked by the NATURAL radiation of the sun than by your phone or even your microwave. Up till now i've never heard of anyone dying of sun or cosmic radiation in 2000 years
Sent from my 1Ghz CM7 + CM9 Defy
Have you ever held an iPhone? I bet you did. If you "felt" the Defy's radiation, you would probably died from the iPhone's radiation.
Anyway, the SAR level ranges from 1.52( body ) to 1.53( head ). Courtesy of Google.
People really have no clue when it comes to radiation, its different forms and how one can 'bake' with it.
Electromagnetic radiation in the area of radio waves simply is incapable of inflicting damage, especially at the very low intensities our devices are emitting. Microwaves are capable of heating substances (most notably 2400 MHz waves in your microwave oven) but for that we need hundreds of Watts of power. Your phone with wifi - around the same frequency - might be able to heaten up your head by a tenth of a degree. Just sitting in the sun or next to a heating radiator - oh dear! - has a much greater effect..
Visible light, also electromagnetic radiation, has a much much higher amount of energy than radio and micro waves. So if you are really worried you better stay indoors during the day, and full moon nights too.
When we raise the energy bar even higher we end up at UV, x-rays and the such. Then and ONLY then one has to start paying attention because those frequencies can conflict physical damage to DNA, tissues etc, which is a TOTALLY different process from heating up water in your microwave. A little heat never caused cancer. Well I hope not as I am living in the tropics. Now the only relevant x-rays on this planet are men-made in controlled environments so nothing to worry about there. Leaves out the UV radiation. Well yes THAT can cause skin cancer. No surprise there I guess.
People should stop talking nonsense about radiation when they have no idea what they are talking about.

Dont use Mobile phone...
use some headset or bluetooth device,
make your phone far away from your head
trust me
Try another baseband. This might reduce your signal strength. Use Baseband switcher for this,,,
I tried other baseband too least is 850/1900 and when i using that i cant hear other's voice.. Previously when i use samsung or Motorola i never received such high signals.. Thanks for your reply guys..

when trying the other basebands you can't swap the frequency range that the phone is receiving ie using 850/1900 when the phone is built for 900/2100 as the radio is not tuned to that frequency, also the service provider may not operate on that band,
teamwork makes the dream work
Even when i putting i my pocket i feel my thies and other parts feeling pain with that radiation i dont know how many observed it.. So finally came into conclusion to use headset, keeping far away from ears, not to use phone much and better try to hold in hands not in pockets and there is no alternative application or procedure to reduce signal strength.. Thank you guys

4g speed of S3 vs iPhone 5 from T-Mobile?

My brother just got new Tmobile branded iPhone 5's Friday. I've had my Tmobile T999 S3 since June'ish...
We live in Dallas, where there is no LTE support yet. So this is strictly HSPA+4g speeds here (supposedly)
Last night, side by side, using the speed test app from the play store and app store, we were getting very different speeds. His iPhone 5 was smoking my S3? I was getting download speeds of around 6-8mb/sec while he was getting a consistent 10-12mb/sec down.
Upload he nudged me out, he was getting around 2mb/sec upload compared to my 1.4(ish)mb/sec upload.
Again Dallas TX does not offer LTE on Tmobile (yet). So it wasn't that.
Sent using T999 with DarthStalker ROM
Don't do the speed test simultaneously, you both are the same tower and all, so going at the same time is dumb... regardless the iPhone 5 might have a better radio, start switching up radios and see which your phone likes more. It's all not going to make a difference while downloading Temple run any ways. Brothers man, always trying to one up the other lol.

LOL.. YOU KNOW IT! He soaked up the glory last night... We are like this commercial pretty funny.... we're both in our 40's! LMAO. Anyway, we did the tests about 10x last night. At the same time, taking turns, I tried power cycle... I COULDN'T BEAT HIS SCORE... :highfive:
Don't get me wrong, there were times I've gotten 14mb/sec download in certain areas... that's rare though... the "norm" is around 6'ish down. I just thought I'd ask why?
Oh, for the record I'm using the UVDJLC modem

Always til the end when it comes to bros lol. Like I said if you're rooted maybe try different modems/radios and see which is best for you, best not to test right now being high traffic times I'm sure. That and the iPhone coming out speeds will slowly get worse til the network is beefed up from the money T-Mobile will get from the iSheep.
Yeah you guys probably shouldn't do it at the same time. Try doing at different times from somewhere you both have good signal. I get around 14-15mb on average but might be because of location, I live in Miami.

I like how another member comes along and repeats what has already been said by another member lol.
Oh by the way you and your brother shouldn't do it at the same time

Lol and another comes to laugh off that comment, I always found that funny. I had classmates who did that. basically the teacher would say something and someone will just raise their hand repeating what the professor just said to show that she's learning, class participation ha.

LJC radio is total crap... I use LI7 and average 15 instead of 8 on LJC, have instantaneous GPS locks indoors, and much better WiFi range than LJC as well. It seems to be a pretty common consensus that LI7 and LI8 are much better.

Well so far the I8 modem does give slight better download data speeds vs the LC modem. But its not night and day or anything.....
On the "C" modem I was averaging 6'ish with bursts in the 10 range... So far with i8 modem I'm slightly higher with bursts in the 12-13 range. GPS locks fast, but did with "C" also.
I will report back after testing for a few more days... this is only a day or two of testing so far.

Make sure to test 6 and 7 as well. Glad to see you are noticing an improvement though - you also should notice better battery life and WiFi speed with those modems.
What part of DFW do you live in? Is it specifically Dallas?
Arlington, TX
A suburb of Dallas / Ft Worth. And spend lots of time in Dallas specifically

Better battery would be great. But so far not seeing that. My son who also has an S3 asked why not use the newest one?
All in all... hard to definitely say one is "better" than another... I don't think I was having issues before... Hard to tell day to day. Speed test is all I'm going by. Maybe I need more information to test? Other things to test or look for?

I'm in Irving and I get mixed bags from T-Mo since I've moved to The Metroplex. The highest I've gotten is 14mbps. A lot worse at my apartment. It really comes down to where you're at.

Speeds are a major factor... Also get GPS Test from the market and see how long it takes to lock and how many satellites you connect to, make some phone calls and check voice quality (I have noticed that LI* radios hold onto HSPA voice much longer than LJ* radios do, which results in a massive increase in voice quality and allows you to use voice and data simultaneously). Battery Benchmark from market is a great way to see what your battery life is like.
If you put your hand on the bottom of the phone where the radio antenna, that can affect speeds/signal for the gs3.

Insider News from Samsung Korea internal situation...

Source: Korea Samsung Headquarters clerk (from my country) sharing with his friend.
Reporting:
- Several High positioned personal resignations.
- The Firm stands strong and united, instead of despairing over the situation.
- Samsung's Engineers are working overtime over a new technology that will revolutionize the smartphone market. Priorly, this technology was supposed to be targeted for the following years. But after the Note 7 disaster, they decided to push it for the next Smartphone release.
----------
Opinion: Sounds legit. Just wanted to share the news. Nothing official of course.
I guess these "high positioned personnel" are the ones who pushed for batteries to be made by Samsung SDI. What makes it even more disappointing is, the replacement units are still SDI batteries. While we've heard nothing from the China region units with ATL batteries.
Samsung should shut their factory down and just stick with the winning formula.

Bad idea to start pushing for quick new technology. Look at the disaster the Note 7 was because it was rushed.

Agreed.
Instead they should solidify their present technology like avoiding explosions...

How do you know this? You don't. We don't know the cause yet.
Well! Tell them to fu** ing explain to us what was it they messed up so bad to infringe our personal property, safety and make us a ton of expences we will never get back!! Tell them they should be convincingnus they are not incompetent to make electronisc anymore in the first place!!
Its not the batteries that are causing the exploding. Its the tweaking of the software that controls the processor to run fast charging. Samsung tried to get a faster charge than all previous devices and screwed the pooch on the software. They can probably issue a software/firmware update but people will not be happy and it may not be a permanent fix.
I have turned fast charging off via the cable and wireless. I have zero over heating problems, zero lag issues, phone is acting like a phone. the real catch is concealing it when traveling on a plane etc.... That is the hard part. I will probably turn my Note 3 into my travel device for music and games and such. Like a glorified Android iPod touch. Ill just turn disable to mobile data and phone stuff, hide the sim card removed icon.
A lot of work still. Damnit Samsung.....
My note 7's (both the original and the replacement) have worked basically perfectly. They don't overheat, don't lag, really not a single problem. The Note 7 is by far the best overall smartphone made to date. Best display, best display to overall size ratio, best camera, waterproof, etc. Only two issues I would say are the edge display which makes a tempered screen protector impossible and a so-so external speaker. And of course the kicker - the non-removable battery. Had they just made it with a removable battery this issue would have not been a phone-killer. It is sad that the best phone ever made to date is killed off like this. And we still have no definitive answer to what is the problem? Seems incomprehensible.

That sounds like speculation. These devices have been melting without being charged. We don't even know if Samsung knows what the actual problem is. Hopefully it all comes out so we get some reassurance about their next phones.
I read a lil bit ago that they didn't know what the actual problem was which is why they decided to kill it. They had over 100 people testing them round the clock and could not duplicate the issue of causing one to smoke/catch fire... of course though they were an anonymous
person close to the situation.

"I think the phone, processor, get hot and bothered in its close quarters and makes the already temperamental battery mad and it throws a tantrum..."
* I heard this while hiding in a garbage pail in an undisclosed location.

Look, I get it, I want to keep my phone as well, and I am not sure what I will do. But to fly with it, while you base the rest on rumors, is plain irresponsible. What you do at home is your business, but getting on a plane with several hundred passengers and a possibly defective phone isn't (there's literally no way for you to tell whether your phone is safe or not). Samsung did after all improve the replacements as they are reportedly catching fire without being charged.
