Last night I stepped on my phone, not hard just accidentally put some weight on it. After that when I turned it on the screen illuminates but stays black. Everything else works, the touch screen seems to be working fine I can even make calls if I guess what I'm pressing.
My question is, do I need to replace the LCD screen, or would the ribbon cable be the problem. I took the phone apart and it looks like the LCD has its own plug.
Did anybody else have this problem? And any suggestions on how I should fix it?
Really no way to tell until you start replacing things.
1st, make sure all the cables are firmly seated, then try to power it up.
If still no LCD, then try replacing the least expensive part, the ribbon cable, first.
If it still doesn't work with a new ribbon cable, then try a new screen...
I unplugged, and re plugged all the connections and started the phone up, still nothing. Im thinking about going for the lcd replacement first since its just under $30 and is a much simpler install than the ribbon calbe. Also Most places will do returns so if the screen does nothing for me I can return it and go for the ribbon calbe.
Replacement for under $30? Where do you live? In The Netherlands it is a bit more expensive.
is it possible that it can just be a software issue?

Hello guys,
Around a week back, my MT3G slide touch screen got unresponsive for a while. I rebooted around 2-3 times and thankfully the touchscreen worked fine.
Now, I am getting this unresponsive touchscreen more often and I have to pull out the battery from the phone and turn it on again. The last time this happened I had to do this about 8-10 times before the touchscreen would respond. I have no problems with my keypad, 4 buttons or the trackpad, just the touchscreen
I also did a factory reset and erased all the data that I had on my phone and SD card.
EDIT : I just figured that the touchscreen sometimes starts working if you slide out the keypad. But once the keypad is slid back in, it's back to being unresponsive.
My phone is out of warranty so I can not get a replacement I think.
Does anyone know what could be the problem for such frequent touchscreen unresponsive behavior. After a couple of reboots, everything returns to normal.
Any ideas ? I would appreciate any help..

I would say it's the flex ribbon cable which connects the motherboard piece to the screen and home button piece. I've purchased several "broken" my touch 3g slides from ebay that had either the screen shift problem when the keyboard was slid out or screen that was unresponsive/wouldn't come on. Both problems were fixed by purchasing an inexpensive flex ribbon cable like item 170747702766 on ebay. I watched a video and followed along on youtube /watch?v=-jgFHuVWlig (stop at 7:27 and reverse the process). However, my most used mt3gs is now starting to have the screen shift problem again and needs a new cable... it didn't last as long as I had hoped.
Did you try any custom roms?. reflashing/updating the device?
I guess it must be some driver issue!..

Seems to be a common issue. I've described the process of replacing the flex ribbon cable here - it's not a rocket science. Or just bring the phone to a serviceman who will do the same (if you lucky enough he could even have a spare cable, but I'd advice you to have your own bought from ebay to be sure).

Thank you for the information but another questiion that I do have is where would one get a serviceman that would repair or help repair a phone, usually the technicians are attached to the different cellular carriers and if one dosen't have a contract with them they are not likely to help repair your phone even if it is for a fee. Do you know any serviceman?
Hello, I saw that someone else asked a similiar question before but they did not word the question correctly and got little help.
On my HTC EVO logic board, there's three tan "ports" (I don't know what they are actually called). One for the front camera, one for the LCD, and one for the front panel.
While walking home one day, my screen started showing a dark spot. The spot got bigger, and I decided to take apart my phone (something I'd done before a few times) and try to clean things up. I put everything back together, and the LCD would not come on. After numerous tries, I finally decided the LCD was damaged. As I went back in the phone, I saw that regardless of whether you flipped the black tab on top of the LCD tan 'port' back or forward, the cable was capable of being pulled out, e.g., it was not secure. At the time, I thought nothing of it, but now that my new LCD should be here, I'm worried.
Is my LCD not working because the 'port' is broken? If so, what can I do to repair it? (I heard it is very difficult). I'm worried, because I paid a lot to buy a new LCD and will be unable to send it back.

Also, my front panel cable never sits 'perfectly'..that is, I have to connect everything else first, and then try my best with the front panel. The tape does not stay down flat completely.
These sorts of connectors can be fixed,but there is quite a bit of skill involved. Upload a picture and I can tell you better how hard it is. What I can tell you is that you probably cant do it yourself. I base this on the fact that those who have the necesesary skils will instantly know its going to be a pain. In fact,its easy to screw it up ,and sometimes you do,even if you DO know what your doing. Since I dont want to take my phone apart,Ill need to see a picture of it before I can tell you anything more. One thing to keep in mind is that sometimes the ribbon cable CAN be pulled out anyway,and is making good contact and there is some other problem. If you have not installed the new LCD,install it and see if it all works. If so,your good to go. As a general rule,the connectors are delicate and its not a good idea to pull them out. In fact,dont disconnect them if you dont have to. They have a limited number of connect/disconects they can take and they are very easy to break.

Well, I don't really have a means of taking a quality photo except with my computer webcam but I'll try in a second. I can't really show you because there isn't much to see. The little black bar that flips up and down to 'lock' the port is ineffective; the cable can be pulled out regardless. I know I can't fix the port/connector by myself, so I'm hoping that's not the issue. You have given me a lot of hope though. The new LCD should be here by Wednesday at the latest, so I'll be able to test it then.

I dont think so. I bet your ok. Just dont keep playing with the connector. I know,Ive done it. I sit there messing with it,wondering,is it broken? Is it good? Then the little black peice comes off in your hand or the plastic breaks and "well its sure broken now!" Remember,that little latch does not so much hold the cable in place as hold the cable against the contacts,if its making contact,its good to go.
Hi, all. The new LCD I receieved did not work. There are very minor differences in the two; such as some type of blue gunk on the silver part of the LCD, the connector is more of a dark orange on the new one while the original is a yellow-orange, etc. Also, again, the connector does not 100% fit in the slot. It goes in, but a small corner sticks out a bit and you have to either hold it in or clip it in [which I can't, because the black clip is broken].
The only possibilities I can think of are
A] Because the little black thing is damaged, no LCD will work in it. Therefore I need a new phone.
B] The LCD does not work.
C] The LCD is the wrong size.
At this point I want to just give up and get a new phone, which is very heart-wrenching because I love my EVO and I doubt I can afford the only other phone I like, the Samsung Galaxy S II Epic Touch 4G.
Is anyone able to identify what connector is used on this phone for the LCD? I broke a pin on the connector while trying to repair a cracked screen. I would like to buy it and re-solder it on to fix the phone.
Can someone link the correct connector maybe from digikey.com?

I too have a problem with the connector... the plastic part that connects the ribbon cable to the main board has broken. There must be a place to buy these tiny plastic latches... does anyone know? Your assistance will be greatly appreciated!

Hey guys, I cracked the screen on my HOX so I replaced the screen with a unit from directfix.com
After double checking all of the flex cables I tried to power the phone on and I am getting nothing from the screen and the vibration motor is constantly buzzing.
The only signs of life is the red LED, the three capacative buttons will light up, and the aforementioned constant vibrating. If i hold the power button to attempt to turn it off the buttons blink several times then it seems to stay on after that.
Has anyone heard of a problem like this before? Its killing me not having my HOX! I had to put my sim card in my old iphone 3gs and I have to say that this sucks really bad.
Are you sure you've connected everything correctly? It sounds like there's something being shorted! I'd recommend you to dissassembly again, an assembly again BUT THIS TIME VERY CAREFUL. Best is if you use a video tutorial if you think you're not experienced enough.

Thank you for the advice. I disassembled the phone and carefully put it back together. I took care to make sure the flex cables for the LCD, vibrator/button strip, antenna, volume buttons and digitizer were all carefully connected.
Now the vibrate function seems to work fine as it just gives me a short pulse when I turn the phone on as it usually does. The screen however, still refuses to turn on. I made extra sure that its flex cable was put in the right way and that it was secured with the jaw bone connector.

I tried exactly that and the LCD would still not turn on. I am just hesitant to return it because I know that the chances of the screen being a complete dud are very slim.

Update: So I was thinking the phone was booting up all the way, but I just saw that my computer won't recognize the phone beyond making a connection sound; I just can't see it in windows. As i said the capacitive lights stay on, but if I fold the power button they blink 15 times exactly and the phone seems to power off. Should I assume the SoC is dead or gamble with a replacement LCD?

Hi, I'm in the exact same situation you have described above! Did you ever manage to work it out, what was the solution? Any info or help at all would be great, thanks!!
I did replace my lcd+digitizer as well as yous. And I had same problem. But it does work now.
1.open up your phone . Take all parts off, separated.
2. Take battery off.
3.Now connect power button.
4. Connect battery.
5.Switch it on (hold pwbt for 2sec), mobo+battery+power button itself.
6.Now wait 20 sec.
7.Now connect LCD ribbon(bottom one),make sure it's right in, push it in far as you can.
8.Now put it righ on bezel and connect digitizer ribbon.
9.Press pwbt and see does it work. If does put rest of stuff together and be happy.
I can make phototutorial on request.
I did it few times. The battery was touching the LCD ribbon and it comes of very little but screen comes off and I have to start all over again.
So make sure that ribbon it's not getting any pressure from battery.

Hi,
Only thing I can think of is that somehow it has damaged the cable from the touchscreen or the tiny wires that feed into the cable without damaging the screen. I came across a brand new screen I was replacing once for someone that had a similar problem where the bottom left hand corner wouldn't respond to touch unless there was firm pressure on the screen to create contact, and this was a brand new screen. It could also be that the touchscreen connector needs to be pushed back onto the board if it's come a bit loose.
If this is the problem, you can fix it by yourself although I'd have a good look around youtube, there are heaps of DIY videos of how to replace screens. If you do go down this path I recommend you replace the touchscreen/LCD/LCD frame in one go, as it's generally already pre- assembled the only thing here is that there are 3 brands of LCD's HTC used with the phone and they aren't all compatible, and you can only tell by pulling down your phone and looking at the LCD flex cable colours, and the other thing is that the screens that are available aren't always the same quality as the original. If this sounds to hard your best bet is to take it somewhere and diagnose the problem just in case it's something else
The screen didn't break but after it fell it did look like the bottom left hand corner was visible darker than the rest of the screen. Today, almost a week after the initial tumble I decide to see if restarting it would fix the problem and it did but it lead to bigger problems. Now if the screen turns off for any reason it stays off until I do a hard reset by holding the power button for 10 seconds. When I try and turn it back on the captive buttons light up but nothing else happens. When the screen is on after a hard reset I'm unable to adjust the brightness level when I pull down the top.
How likely is it that the LCD ribbon came loose? It seemed like there were issues with it before.
I'm at a complete loss for what could be wrong with it. Any advice for recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
I'm really hoping I don't need any major repairs or even a new tablet because I can't afford much of anything.
My grandson recently had a tantrum and threw down my tablet. Afterwards the screen was flickering so I decided to restart it to see if that would fix it. The screen never came back on although I could hear it start up sounds and the capacitive buttons would light up. To make the story short, i contacted Samsung and they said it would be a standard $200 repair fee unless they found a loose cable. Today my credit card was charged $59 dollars by Samsung. I guess it was just the loose cable. Note that they sent me a prepaid UPS label to send it back to them and they are shipping it back to me all within that $59 charge. Well worth it for a great tablet.

You got to remove the back and disconnect the lcd and battery cables and reconnect them after 10 seconds and all should be good. This happened to me after I got the screen of death. I dropped it and the screen did it again. So I just disconnected them both, reconnected, and everything works fine.

Can you recommend any guides & kits that I can purchase from amazon to help me take the tablet a part?
YouTube it. It is real easy removing the back, patience is needed.
Yes go to youtube for the disassembly videos. I bought a generic repair kit from ifixit for the tools. Though guitar picks can also work well.
Basically when you drop it a cable gets loose. You just have to disconnect and reconnect it.
Mine was very clearly only half connected (not in the picture which is from when I replaced the battery). I also disconnected and reconnected the battery and lcd connectors to make sure. But the loose cable was on the top left and didn't seem to be one of those. Just reseat them all to be sure.
There is another thread on here about disassembly which has pictures that I used as reference.
I've had mine apart twice. Once when I dropped it and once when I replaced the battery for poor battery performance (this really was sooo worth it).
I just received a used Note today and was about to initiate a return because the screen was completely dark but the rest of the tablet seemed to be working, including touch. Removed the back, reseated the ribbon cable, and everything's good now.
Strange start to my experience with this tablet.
