Screen cleaning tip - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hey,
This probably sounds a little dumb but for anyone who likes to keep their screen really clean if you use a dried out baby wipe it works just as good as a micro fibre cloth. Just thought I would share as I did it last night and it saved me buying a cloth.

That does work very well indeed!

How does this compare to licking the screen and wiping on shirt/pants (user preference)?
On a scale of 1 to 10 please.
LTE EX Galaxy Nexus - AOSP KANG
Asus Transformer - 3.2.1 OC/UV

Personally, I prefer 80 grit.

Good to know, as I have a few of those lying around from time to time... (1 year old likes to pull wipes out of bag and let them dry )

i just use my shirt and my breath haha

I'd like to know the most effective way of cleaning in the crack between the outside housing of the phone and the screen. I have a little bit of stuff in there and that damn gap is so small.

what i do is use compressed air.
if it is in there tight i just use the corner of a piece of paper and run it out.

I just tear the corner of a magazine cover off. Gets deeper than compressed air. Accidentally put my phone in the same pocket as my cigarettes and had pieces of tobacco lining the phone. Magazine cover worked perfectly

[Q] Possible to polish Gorilla Glass? (need to remove residue from candle wax)

Edit: Solved! Read below
My SGS2 was sitting on a counter next to a lit candle. Someone blew out the candle and managed to get wax on the screen. I was able to get the wax off pretty easily but it left behind this residue that I cannot seem to get off, no matter how hard I try. When the screen is 100% clean you cannot see it. But after one wipe of your finger the smudges are blatantly noticeable and even have a texture to them.
I have tried everything from Windex to Goo-Gone and nothing works. At this point I'm thinking about treating it as a scratch and polishing the screen in an effort to remove the residue. I have looked at a few different techniques and I'm not sure which one to try.
I saw a thread on another forum mentioning using toothpaste and a paper towel to scrub the screen and polish it. I'd like to give this a try but I'm nervous about permanently damaging the glass by making it foggy.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks for any info!
SOLVED
Well after trying just about everything to get the wax residue off I finally resorted to what I feared the most, a razor blade. And much to my surprise it worked flawlessly. I held the razor blade at a 45 degree angle and just went to town scraping the screen. It was able to get underneath all the residue and any remnants of the wax. After scraping with the razor blade then wiping the screen with an alcohol wipe a few times my screen now looks and feels like it just came out of the packaging. And the razor blade didn't leave a single scratch on the screen.
What didn't work:
- Toothpaste and paper towel
- Alcohol wipes
- Dish soap and paper towel
- Damp paper towel heated in the microwave for up to 2 minutes
- 50/50 mixture of distilled white vinegar and water applied with paper towel
Tooth paste wont fog up your screen trust me i do it all the time. But what i do is use this spray you can buy at your local best buy called Monster

If that don't work, get a wet paper towel/shammy cloth. Wet and microwave it for about a minute, then vigorously rub the screen with the heated cloth. This will remove the wax residue.
How about using a hair dryer to melt it first, or at least make it pliable enough to remove?
I think I'm going to try the wet/heated paper towel trick first. If that doesn't work I will resort to the toothpaste/paper towel.
If neither of these tactics work I will just drink beer.
I'm going to give this a shot when I get home from work in 45 minutes. I'll keep yuo guys posted.
sixfoot7 - I'm hesitant to take extreme heat to my phone. Especially since I do not want to melt the glue holding the screen to the bezel.
Thanks for the input.
Microfiber cloth usually one that comes with a screen protector. 90 % isopropyl alcohol and distilled water mixture. Should give the screen a good cleaning. I think you can use and tv screen cleaner as well. Monster brand cleaner.
You needed 90% iso alcohol
just try

UPDATE
I gave the hot/wet paper towel trick a shot but it did nothing. I tried this like 5 times with no positive results.
So I wiped the hell out of the screen with toothpaste and paper towel. At first I thought it solved the problem but after I cleaned it all off and dried the screen it was clear that all I did was smear this crap onto a bigger portion of the screen. Now the entire bottom half of the screen feels like it has one of those glare-free screen protectors on it.
It's strange because you can't see it at all. It looks 100% fine. But it's almost sticky to the touch.
Tonight I will try using 90% iso alcohol, distilled water, and a microfiber towel.
We have some dish soap here in the office so I will give that a try right now.
After spending about 5 minutes rubbing dish soap on the screen with paper towel, I'm happy to post that this has been the best solution so far. It appears to have gotten rid of a lot of the residue left from the candle wax. However, here is still a little bit caked onto the screen.
Tonight I am going to give the alcohol/distilled water/micro fiber cloth a shot to remove the rest. I'll let you guys know how it turns out.
It really is crazy to me how difficult this process has been.
But one key takeaway that I think everyone should know is that after using the streak free dish soap, I'm finding it nearly impossible to leave any fingerprints or marks on the screen after using it. So for those plagued with finger prints and smudges on your screen, I recommend giving it a good scrub with some dish soap and you'll find that the screen will look spotless even after heavy use.

make sure you get a screen protector as well it could of been worse than what you had and actually damaged the screen.
I actually found some 80% iso alcohol wipes in the first aid kit here in the office. I wiped the screen with 3 of them until each of them were completely dry. This appears to have finally solved the problem.

Yeah, I've never been a fan of screen protectors but after this nightmare I'll be picking one up tonight.
Just thought I'd add that it's standard practice to remove things from glass with a razor blade. One of those standard flat ones. Razor blades work for removing stickers from windows or mirrors and any other crud or buildup. They work quick and very well. Also, they don't scrach the glass unless you hold them at 90 degrees and scrape.

I know this is true for standard glass. I used a razor blade to remove the tint from the windows of one of my cars and it worked well without showing any scratches.
But is the Gorilla Glass true "glass"?
UPDATE
Well now that the phone has been sitting for a bit, I went to use it again and the screen is back to having a sticky feel to it! Now the texture is just more spread out across the screen. I am truly stumped at this point. I am close to shelling out for a damn screen replacement.
Final update: the razor blade did the trick. I have updated the OP with the solution and the tactics that failed in hopes that it might help someone with similar issues down the road.
Learned. Thanks.
Not sure if we have an oleophobic coating on our screens, but any alcohol solution would remove that coating. I would avoid putting alcohol on the screen as well as ammonia based solutions such as Windex. Just a heads up.

Cleaning

How do you guys clean your phone? I usually use a alcohol pad and go over the front and back and wipe it off with a microfiber cloth. Think that does any damage to the phone itself?
Alcohol might be a very efficient way of removing the oleophobic coating on the screen. I prefer to use just a slightly damp microfiber cloth.

Hmm, only thing is that using just a cloth doesnt disinfect it :/
alcohol can be very aggrssive with phone and plasic part.
I use a microfiber wet cloth for "wash" and a similar microfibre cloth but dry to remove umidity.
I use the same as my samsung galaxy s and the results are very nice.

I use the same stuff I use on my LCD TV, which doesn't contain alcohol protecting the coating. I really don't wipe off my phone very often though.

I use a slightly damp microfiber most of the time. I do have DirtRags wipes that are a little pricey but will disinfect and are safe for all electronics (no alcohol or harsh chemicals). The wipes actually work really well and leave a fresh surface with no residue.

While we're on the topic of cleaning, anybody have an effective way of dealing with scratches? One popped up on the top bezel of my phone, right next to the speaker.
Why would you disinfect your phone? I usually clean mine with a damp microfibre cloth. Maybe there's a particular reason why you'd like to disinfect your phone but in my opinion there's no need for that in general.

He probably wants to sanitize his phone because it is a good safety practice. Think of how many things you touch, then your phone... Even if you wash your hands you will be touching your phone again which contains a lot of previous germs. I worked in the food industry before, and it was a requirement to wash your hands after each time you used your cell. Phones carry a lot more germs than people think about, simply because your touching it all the time

Well, #1 all this germ insanity is not helping at all. In fact, our obsessive use of antimicrobials and antibiotics are creating super germs and neglecting our immune systems of vital conditioning and strengthening that can only take place by exposing your body to bacteria and virus.
And #2, the best thing you can do is wash your hands regularly and don't touch your face. Keep your fingers out of your mouth, nose, eyes, and ears. Done.
If you have these habits, no amount of chemicals on your phone or the rest of the world is going to help you. Luckily, your immune system will.

Be careful while applying Zagg (and other WET apply protectors)!

As the title says BE CAREFUL. While installing the wet apply Zagg, I guess there was alot of excess liquid, and some of it got into the Power Button, and it STOPPED working. Couldn't press it at all, so I figured maybe it was SW related, and took out the battery. The moment I put it in, the phone started to boot and I knew something was wrong.
I freaked out, called Samsung, and put the Gnex in rice. Told them it just "stopped working" , and that I needed a replacement ASAP. Went through everything told me that I'd have to put a credit card on the line and they'll send me a new device, so I did.
30 minutes later, I go to check on my device (just bare Nexus, no battery, back cover, etc) and I stick the battery in. To my surprise, the phone didn't boot up by itself, and so I hold it down and viola! Worked like a charm. I looked up to the heavens, and screamed in joy (seriously, my gf was scared).
Anyways, BE CAREFUL. Don't add too much, I think the liquid is alcohol based as it dries quickly and smells like it, so I wouldn't be too worried, but still, I THOUGHT I BROKE MY NEXUS!
Now I have to call Samsung and tell them to cancel the order... Ugh. -__-
Anyone else have similar experiences? Also, I can't get the bottom and top pieces to attach, they just slide off at the corners, can anyone provide some insight?

Both videos on Youtube didn't have a problem, and if Zagg had included some instructions, I wouldn't have resorted to Youtube in the first place. Just trying to help out others.
I applied a wet shield to mine. Pulled battery, applied shield, let it dry, good to go.
I heard about letting it dry, which I thought I did, liquid still got in it however.

When I applied the Zagg protector, I got a bunch of the liquid on the front of the phone, but I was careful enough to make sure it didn't run off the sides. I was paranoid thinking the liquid would damage my phone, but it turned out okay in the end.
I just bought an XO Skins screen protector (wet application) and I haven't installed it yet. I'm thinking about using a tiny strip of masking tape for the ear piece and taping over the sides so everything is not exposed. Anyone think this is a good idea? I'm just really paranoid lol.

Just take out the battery before hand, don't drown your device in liquid when installing, and LEAVE IT OFF OVERNIGHT before putting the battery back in to let everything to dry. I've down about 7 wet installs and never had any issues, but I've always allowed for at least 8 hours before using the device again.
the glue of masking tape might stick to sides or skin.....generally the masking tapes are cheap....it would be a pain to remove the glue without scratching the screen or edges....i applied zagg....saw the orange peel effect, and removed it in 5 min.....although i kept it again in box....i dont think zagg is good in terms of orange peel.
I agree, Zagg has too much orange peel, XO skins are better.

I installed my XO Skins last night. Used painters tape and placed it over the ear piece and the whole outer parts(around the phone, covering the volume rocker, power/lock, micro USB, headphone jack and back speaker). I am usually very paranoid about doing wet installs with screen protectors and this process went well and there was no residue at all. Not even 24 hours later, my screen is clear and only a few micro-bubbles are left. To anyone looking to put XO Skins on and are a little weary, painters tape works flawlessly.

Hello! You have to be extremely cautious with wet-application films. Always. I've installed Zagg's IS on several apple products, like my ex-iphone 4, 2 macbooks pro, and my magic mouse. Apple products are made to tight tolerances, while our GNexes don't. When I saw the gap between the screen glass and the plastic outer housing I knew

Yeah, that and the entire front of the iPhone is a nice slab of glass.
After that, may be from user error, weird mistake, or act of god, sticking to dry install. Pretty good at it, and if you do it after a hot shower in the bathroom, no dust gets under it.

Mask properly.
Sand liberally, but not abusively.
Primer optional.
Paint lightly to prevent running.
Multiple layers. Let set in between.
Allow plenty of time to dry.
Use a dust free environment. I recommend rigging a couple CPU fans near it pointing away.

You can also use a paint that has the primer built in but again it is optional. Its not like your painting an orange wall white . Anyways I did I used rustoleum also the key is to LET IT DRY between applications. And do not do multiple applications because it will take forever to dry and u do not have forever as u need ur phone. Beside u only need 4 to 5 light coats. Distribute evenly good luck

My dad keeps saying I'm gonna fu×k up and that it will chip no matter what and I'm like, "challenge accepted.:sly:"
A chip is a chip.. but how bad it looks after the chip will depend on how thick the paint is. Considering the material you're painting, I would go with a paint specific for plastics. Try a hobby store that has a good model car section.

But to be perfectly honest, if you're asking us for painting advice then you probably aren't pro. That means there's a good chance your dad is right. My advice is don't do it. But if you do, mask the **** out of it.

Don't listen to him (your dad) and so far no chips and everything looks good its been about 3 weeks also. Anyways be careful when taking volume and power rockers off they are easy tho and for the gold pogo pins there is a black bar that goes over them work on each end and pry the bar up it will have a hole on each end. Then when the black bar is off u will see three individual pogo pins u have to stick something against them from outside (like pushing them inward) then they will fallout out. Tape off everything that is important. And remember this will prolly void your warranty so u should grab an extra grey housing and battery cover (if u decide to paint that). I personally am getting the white housing and white battery door I get bored quick

Yeah I'm gonna buy a new one before doing this and use the old one as my test since it has dings and scratches on it.

I have the Verizon i515 version.
The only thing available is the white door.
Damn those sellers!!!!! Selling stuff half way.
Vinyl dye bonds directly to plastic, dries in minutes, and won't chip or scratch away. Just 2-3 light coats is all you need for good coverage. The only limitation is that you don't have much choice in the color or finishes.

But to be perfectly honest, if you're asking us for painting advice then you probably aren't pro. That means there's a good chance your dad is right. My advice is don't do it. But if you do, mask the **** out of it.

It's a good word for what vinyl dye does. I've been using it for years when painting game controllers and have never had it wear off.

My Note 2 got bent???

I know this might sound wired but ya the title says it all!!!
I woke up in the morning i felt that the note is slightly bent as in its raised on the left hand side of the phone!!
I have a bad habit of keeping the note 2 next to me while sleeping so i must've rolled on top of it last night!!
Is it possible for it to happen in the first place???
Or may be keeping in my pocket of tight pants and riding the bike can do that to my note 2??
I'm shocked!! Its been hardly 15 days since i bought it!!

well this seems impossible as though the phone make is plastic it cant bent if you have rolled on top as the mattress is soft enough to protect the impact or rather it could have broken due to body pressure and to the contrary i have been carrying the phone in my jeans riding my bike to for the last 3 months and no issues whatsoever.
can you post screen of the bent position
I'm calling shenanigans.

Im taking pic with different cams but that slight bent is not visible in those pics so thats why wasnt responding buddy!! anyways I ll try something in order to show my note
N2 is a big phone, I carry mine in my pocket too, but I try to keep it safe from bending. Its a fact that its easy to bend such a big and long phone but riding a bicycle and bending it is a bit weird, we are waiting for pictures and further posting from you. And if thats true, try to use your warranty and get a new one? You might get lucky!

Is it really bent.... than thats one in a million production. Sounds weird thou...
I've seen videos of product testing for the GN2, and one test involved twisting the phone. It always returned to its original shape, and the twist was quite severe. You'd need a lot of force to bend this phone beyond the yield point and I'm not sure you can reach it by rolling over it on a bed. Check the battery, if you haven't already, maybe it's defective, bulging out and bending the phone in the process.
I've also carried my phone in different pockets on my bike since I got it, 1-2 months after it came out. I even fell on it once when my front wheel slipped on a patch of ice. There is a slight ripple in the glass now, only noticeable at a sharp angle, but I don't know if it's from my fall or just a manufacturing issue. Either way, I'm quite impressed with the phone's durability. If falling ass-first on it on the hard icy pavement didn't break it, I'm sure rolling over it in bed wouldn't either. I'd check it thoroughly to be certain that they couldn't blame me for damaging it and send it to warranty.
It doesn't make sense because the front panel which basically made of hardened glass shouldn't bend. If anything any stress beyond its limit will end up breaking it. Anyways, try getting a clear shot otherwise people will have a hard time believing you.

Exactly.
I would think that the only way to bend a glass panel would be to use an extreme amount of heat, like a torch. You would have to heat up the glass until glows red, and then bend the it. I just googled "how to bend glass" and here is a link for anyone interested, http://m.wikihow.com/Bend-Glass
You could possibly flex it, but it should snap right back into its original shape. Besides, the rest of the phone is a fairly flexible plastic.
