Cleaning - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

How do you guys clean your phone? I usually use a alcohol pad and go over the front and back and wipe it off with a microfiber cloth. Think that does any damage to the phone itself?

Alcohol might be a very efficient way of removing the oleophobic coating on the screen. I prefer to use just a slightly damp microfiber cloth.

Hmm, only thing is that using just a cloth doesnt disinfect it :/

alcohol can be very aggrssive with phone and plasic part.
I use a microfiber wet cloth for "wash" and a similar microfibre cloth but dry to remove umidity.
I use the same as my samsung galaxy s and the results are very nice.

Do you really need to disinfect your phone?

I use the same stuff I use on my LCD TV, which doesn't contain alcohol protecting the coating. I really don't wipe off my phone very often though.

I use a slightly damp microfiber most of the time. I do have DirtRags wipes that are a little pricey but will disinfect and are safe for all electronics (no alcohol or harsh chemicals). The wipes actually work really well and leave a fresh surface with no residue.

I use bleach, and so far my phone hasn't had any problsme nkyf{} & ;-)¤{<°<<°^dv...

While we're on the topic of cleaning, anybody have an effective way of dealing with scratches? One popped up on the top bezel of my phone, right next to the speaker.

Why would you disinfect your phone? I usually clean mine with a damp microfibre cloth. Maybe there's a particular reason why you'd like to disinfect your phone but in my opinion there's no need for that in general.

He probably wants to sanitize his phone because it is a good safety practice. Think of how many things you touch, then your phone... Even if you wash your hands you will be touching your phone again which contains a lot of previous germs. I worked in the food industry before, and it was a requirement to wash your hands after each time you used your cell. Phones carry a lot more germs than people think about, simply because your touching it all the time

Well, #1 all this germ insanity is not helping at all. In fact, our obsessive use of antimicrobials and antibiotics are creating super germs and neglecting our immune systems of vital conditioning and strengthening that can only take place by exposing your body to bacteria and virus.
And #2, the best thing you can do is wash your hands regularly and don't touch your face. Keep your fingers out of your mouth, nose, eyes, and ears. Done.
If you have these habits, no amount of chemicals on your phone or the rest of the world is going to help you. Luckily, your immune system will.

Screen cleaning tip

Hey,
This probably sounds a little dumb but for anyone who likes to keep their screen really clean if you use a dried out baby wipe it works just as good as a micro fibre cloth. Just thought I would share as I did it last night and it saved me buying a cloth.
That does work very well indeed!

How does this compare to licking the screen and wiping on shirt/pants (user preference)?
On a scale of 1 to 10 please.

[Q] - What do you use to clean your Nexus?

Title says it all. What do you use to clean your galaxy nexus and keep it looking new? I have been using Zagg Clean for Gadgets but they recently changed their formula and it has a weird scent and makes my phone greasy after applying. I am on my last bottle of their old formula.
Also, when you name your product can you let me know if it is anti-bacterial or not?
Thanks fellow GNEX owners!
I use a small amount of soap and water.

You do realize your touch screen harbors more bacteria than a public restroom? Its the number 2 reason why people get sick now besides not washing their hands. Wiping your phone on your pants is a great way to add to the bacteria on the phone.
I use only microfiber. No chemicals, water only.
Thanks. That's what that zagg formula was water based. Does normal water help prevent finger prints?
Dettol wipes. Because I will breakout if I put a dirty screen to my face

Hey, I like backdoor fisting as much as the next guy, but I wash my hands before touching the phone.

Help...just did something dumb

Just got off work and took my phone out of my pocket and
Chewing gum is mushed all over the screen.
I've managed to get the big wobs off but sill lots on there.
I don't want to wet the screen much...helpz
Glass/multipurpose cleaner should cut away at it, provided nothing goes thru your speaker or any crevices on the side of ur phone your screen shouldn't be damaged by wetness or anything. If that were the case I woulda been plenty screwed when I used to wash dishes at a restaurant.
And that's why I never have ANYTHING in the same pocket as my phone.
You can try rubbing alcohol on a q-tip WITH THE PHONE OFF AND THE BATTERY PULLED.
I would try this
Purchase a multipurpose stain remover that dissolves glues and adhesives from your local home-improvement center or hardware store. Popular brands such as Un-Du, Goo Gone and Goof Off are solvents that safely eliminate glue from clothing and fabrics, among other surfaces.
2
Follow directions on how to apply the solution by referring to the product label. If you are instructed to spray or pour it onto a cloth, use a material that is gentle enough for your LCD screen, such as terry cotton or microfiber. Applying the solution with a cleaning cloth is recommended over spraying the screen directly and is less likely to make a mess.
3
Dab the glue residue with a cloth until the solvent begins to soften it. Wipe the area using moderate pressure and notice the glue loosen from the screen with ease.
4
Do not hesitate to allow the solvent to dissolve the residue longer if any stubborn film persists. The petroleum- or limonene-based solutions safely remove residue without harming the surface.
I would think because of the gorilla glass's chemical resistance the goo gone solution would work to dissolve the gum from any area's, yet maintain the integrity of the glass or surrounding area....
Solve
Go to Wal-Mart and but something called Goo-Be-Gone it is in a clear bottle and it is orange. Now just spray it on a rag and wipe, it will remove like butter.
nail polish remover
PEANUT BUTTER..
...and no, I'm not joking.
I heard of sticking it in the freezer til the gum is hard enough to pick off...but dont know if it would affect the internals. Works on jeans and tshirts though!

Nail polish remover is a huge NO! That will also slightly eat the surface of the screen resulting most likely in swirl marks, alcohol will not do this.

How to prevent dust when installing a screen protector?

Regardless of how much I clean the screen I always seem to end up with a few specks of dust underneath. Any tips?
Here is what you do. Have humidity in the air to keep the dust at bay. So go into the bathroom and turn the shower on where it's hot and steamy. Let the room get humid, but not where you can't see what your doing. I usually use a alcohol wipe first to remove oils. Then polish with a microfiber cloth and apply the protector. Works every time for me.

Depends.. I have improvised a makeshift clean room before.. if you clean the bathroom thoroughly and close the door and allow the shower to run on HOT to steam up the room... once the steam settles the dust should settle with it..
this is kinda extreme.. but have done this in the past when working on a hard drive and had to take the top off of the unit to free a stuck head..
That is overkill for this.. Just find an area with little or no airflow.. clean the area thoroughly.. and set everything there that you need and try to not stir up dust by moving around too much.... clean the device.. and apply the film....

Steam room is a great idea. Thanks.
Steam room is the best bet, but if you can't do that, I always have a micro-fiber cleaning cloth on hand and some canned air duster. I wipe the screen down real good, give it a few blasts of air, double check for anything and go from there.

try that, nothing as complicated as a steamy room, but with easily great results
I always had issues to like the OP. I found that using my downstairs bathroom which is hardly used helped a lot. All I did was wash my hands throughly without drying them. Then polished my screen with a microfiber cloth before putting on my DRY screen protector. It went on flawlessly and I have perfect optics. Couldn't be happier.

Oil/fingerprints on your screen (about 8 months into use)

Hi!
Particularly to people who've owned their GS3 for a number of months: has your screen become a oil/fingerprint magnet? It didn't used to be one in the beginning, but now I get it all the time (I got it in July 2012).
Sometimes, I get that odd rainbow effect when the oil just kind of "sits" on the screen. Disgusting, I know, but my hands aren't that oily...it just seems to pick up a lot more of it than it used to!
I just wipe it on my pants (lol): what do you guys do, if yours has this issue?
I think that's a property inherent to every touchscreen. Good thing about this one, though, is that it's very easy to clean.

If I tilt just right in the light, I do have some faint tiny scratches on the screen, but the "finger smears" are all over the screen (i.e. not localized to the scratches). But, I can see them playing a small part...
@dLo GSR
The oleophobic coating! That actually makes a ton of sense, as it just attracts oil like crazy. I Google'd it and it's a known problem with Apple iPhones and iPads (even the iPhone 5's manual says the coating will wear off!). Samsung's manual is worthless in this regard, but I don't think they've got anything better than Apple.
@KorGuy
Yeah, I think I have two options: screen protector (which will also protect against scratches) or re-apply the oleophobic coating (as stated through this iFixIt guide). Hmm...I need to sleep on this (the screen protector looks a lot simpler, haha).

Right...I didn't know about RainX working here (wouldn't it stop hydrophillic things, like water, but not hydrophobic things, like oil?), but it also only lasts 3-4 months on a car (http://www.rainx.com/tips-information/faqs/), so maybe 1 year on a phone? How do you know it's safe to use on the phone?
Yes, the Fusso I listed above; it again only lasts for 3-6 months. Here's a review posted last week of someone using it on their iPad: generally positive, but a commenter also mentions some car waxes as cheaper alternatives.

From what I've read the best way to clean your screen is to use distilled water and a microfiber cloth. Supposedly the toxins in tap water can be harmful to your screen. You can get a gallon of distilled water at the grocery store for like 70cents, which is what I've been doing since I bought my screen protector and so far oleophobic coating is still intact!
Sent from my SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
Unless you're living somewhere where the tap water is not treated, there shouldn't be any toxins in your tap water. If there are, you've got much bigger problems than oily smartphone screens... There will be some minerals in there and maybe fluoride. I doubt there's anything in tap water that would damage your screen, not that there's anything wrong with using distilled water. In either case, a damp microfibre cloth or a drop of water on your screen wiped with a microfibre cloth should be very effective at cleaning the screen and probably much safer than alcohol or solvent based cleaners (although the literature I've read on Gorilla glass suggests it's resistant to alcohol, acetone and a number of other chemicals, but maybe over time they do wear down the coating).
In any case, I'm really responding to this thread because I recently discovered this product:

I personally wouldn't put a lot of faith in anything from Monster (maybe they're better now but to me they will always be the company selling ludicrously overpriced HDMI cables and suing anyone with "monster" anywhere in their name regardless of context). But this product looks interesting. It seems to be similar to the original coating used on Gorilla and similar glasses.
I'm wondering if it adds scratch resistance and reduces visibility of existing scratches. If so, I think I'd prefer adding a coat of this every 3 months than using a screen protector. I have a semi-broken HTC phone with the original Gorilla Glass which happens to have a small but visible scratch on it. I think I'm going to order one of these and use the HTC screen to test it on. If it works well I'll try in on my S3 which has a much bigger scratch. I suspect it will be very difficult to photograph but I'll post results when I get it.

I didn't think the GS3 had an oleophobic coating.

or just apply RainX, it will make it more easy to clean.

I like that Rain-X option...
I'll probably even try some Aquapel on my good ol' GS1 next time I treat my windshield! :good:
Wouldn't it be simpler to put on a screen protector? I've had a screen protector on mine since day 1 (not even costly, I think I got like 3 for less than $10), and its still going strong... hard to say its even there
