Title says it all. What do you use to clean your galaxy nexus and keep it looking new? I have been using Zagg Clean for Gadgets but they recently changed their formula and it has a weird scent and makes my phone greasy after applying. I am on my last bottle of their old formula.
Also, when you name your product can you let me know if it is anti-bacterial or not?
Thanks fellow GNEX owners!
I use a small amount of soap and water.

It's my goddamn phone...and I don't care if it's gross !
But I gleak on the screen and rub it down with the inside of the cotton shirt that I am wearing.
I clean it like other normal people do... wipe it on my pants leg.

You do realize your touch screen harbors more bacteria than a public restroom? Its the number 2 reason why people get sick now besides not washing their hands. Wiping your phone on your pants is a great way to add to the bacteria on the phone.
I use only microfiber. No chemicals, water only.
Thanks. That's what that zagg formula was water based. Does normal water help prevent finger prints?
Dettol wipes. Because I will breakout if I put a dirty screen to my face

Maybe I just don't get my phone as dirty as other people, but I've never felt a need to buy a special cleaner chemical for my phone. Its glass and plastic - I clean it like glass and plastic. And by that I mean I wipe it down with my shirt.
either soft paper or just what i use to clean my glasses

If you think of all the places your phone goes, and all the things your hands touch, which touch the phone....
And then you put that sh*t to your mouth.
But a shirt wipe fixes that right?

I was starting to think I was the only one who was concerned about all the crap and bacteria that collects on a phone, especially touch screen.
In all seriousness though, I used your water trick after the zagg clean and it works even better. Thanks for the tip.

In case of smudgy screen: I stick it in my pocket. It is incredibly cool that the screen cleans itself. It will be a sad day when the coating wears off, but hopefully the next Nexus will be out then.
The rest: water and a kleenex.

Corning themselves stated that the Nexus doesnt use gorilla glass but that doesnt mean they havent used some other type thats just as strong and durable. The guy did mention in his twitter that he managed to scratch it with a google mug a bit later so I dont know how he managed to do that maybe he threw the mug at the phone coz it wouldnt go get him another coffee haha.
Im not even sure if that type of key test would scratch normal glass if it was only done for a few seconds. I guess I could take my keys to a piece of glass on the shed and see what happens lol.

Just an ordinary key (especially a well used one) are quite round and soft in the edges so no, it should be hard to scratch regular glass even, an unpainted ceramic coffey mug bottom on the other hand is allmost like a fine sandpaper so it would cause more scratching

ye, dragging a coffee mug across the screen would be a much better test, I've often thought the same about the use of keys in scratch test videos.
Keys is a good test imo, what else is a common contact to the phone? throw it in your pocket, what is usualy in there? i know i keep mine in my rear pocket all by itself, but still keys could become a common contct with a phone. When I empty my pockets I tend to stack them all in a pile, wallet usually end up ontop of the phone, but occasionaly I realize my phone on my desk with keys on top. Yes,I can see people setting their coffee on top of their phone like a coaster, caeless, but i'm sure it happens when you are busy at work.

I don't really think anyone would really ever put a mug on their phone in day to day use, but there are plenty of things worse than keys that your phone can get in contact with that would be more abrasive than a key, the mug example would be a good method to test the screens resilience to such things.

I like you thought the same after having the SGS and mine already has 2 scratches.
Rub a few grains of sand or salt on any display and report back.
I actually drove by the Corning main campus last weekend in New York. I was close to stopping by and questioning why they wouldn't make every effort possible to get their product into the Nexus.
Of course I realized they wouldn't answer my questions or be helpful...but still.
I'm not worried, anyway. I'm sure whatever manufacturer Samsung got for this phone did a fine job.
BULL****! My screen is scratched after 3 days of using it in the house and I have OCD with my phone! the worst thing i did was put it in my pocket and take it out.
I have had a galaxy S2 for over 6 month and not had a scratch :/ this one is quite deep

How do you guys clean your phone? I usually use a alcohol pad and go over the front and back and wipe it off with a microfiber cloth. Think that does any damage to the phone itself?
Alcohol might be a very efficient way of removing the oleophobic coating on the screen. I prefer to use just a slightly damp microfiber cloth.

Hmm, only thing is that using just a cloth doesnt disinfect it :/
alcohol can be very aggrssive with phone and plasic part.
I use a microfiber wet cloth for "wash" and a similar microfibre cloth but dry to remove umidity.

I use the same stuff I use on my LCD TV, which doesn't contain alcohol protecting the coating. I really don't wipe off my phone very often though.

Why would you disinfect your phone? I usually clean mine with a damp microfibre cloth. Maybe there's a particular reason why you'd like to disinfect your phone but in my opinion there's no need for that in general.

He probably wants to sanitize his phone because it is a good safety practice. Think of how many things you touch, then your phone... Even if you wash your hands you will be touching your phone again which contains a lot of previous germs. I worked in the food industry before, and it was a requirement to wash your hands after each time you used your cell. Phones carry a lot more germs than people think about, simply because your touching it all the time

Well, #1 all this germ insanity is not helping at all. In fact, our obsessive use of antimicrobials and antibiotics are creating super germs and neglecting our immune systems of vital conditioning and strengthening that can only take place by exposing your body to bacteria and virus.
And #2, the best thing you can do is wash your hands regularly and don't touch your face. Keep your fingers out of your mouth, nose, eyes, and ears. Done.
If you have these habits, no amount of chemicals on your phone or the rest of the world is going to help you. Luckily, your immune system will.

I just want to know how you guys without screen protectors or cases feel about putting the phone face down when listening to music or something...
Are you afraid of scratches?
Guess it depends on the table/surface, but I'd never like to make a practice of it. I guess at worse it's scratching the top/bottom and not the middle, but more than likely it's going to scratch the plastic bezel on the top/bottom which looks terrible when it happens.
I just leave it back-down so I don't risk it.
I've only had mine for about two weeks but yes I'm not comfortable putting it face down unless it's on a smooth surface like my bed or bag or something like that.
People who are worried about scratches won't leave the phone naked in the first place.
My friend never puts any protector or case on his phones and his argument is 'it's just a phone, not my girlfriend. Why protect it so well when I'm gonna toss it away for a new one in about 1.5 years?'

That's not necessarily true. Sure it might be from some people but not for me and I'm sure others as well. Not really... I hate the feel of cases and screen protectors especially, so I'm extra careful with my phone because it's not protected.
I put mine facedown down on a supposedly smooth table and when i picked it up, scratches! Be safe just don't put it face down on anything but a soft surface - as suggested above. It is just a phone, but it is a very nice and expensive phone!
I can't stand those skins and screen protectors, takes away from the natural beauty of the phone. I have a SPG leather case so if it is face down, and it really never is I put it face down on the case.
I do take extra care of mt phones though because I like to switch up about every year. It is great for resale, plus more cash for towards the next phone.
Glass is hard, but not that hard. There are a ton of substances that can easily scratch it. I don't put it face down unless it's in a case.

We would put our phone face down to increase volume when listening to music?
I decided to put a protector on mine. While I like the look and feel of the screen better without it, it just isn't worth the risk to me. I plan on having this phone for a while. (I had my DroidX for almost two years prior to getting the Galaxy Nexus).
Besides, it is rarely your car keys that scratch the screen (because we are generally careful about those). More often than not it is something really small like a piece of sand or a tiny rock in your pocket or on the table that will get you. Unless you blow out your pockets and sweep the table before you put your phone down, you are likely to get a scratch eventually.

I also found this oleophobic coating kit. Could this potentially fix it? http://www.amazon.com/API-Fingerpri...1360793543&sr=1-1&keywords=oleophobic+coating
or should I just buy a screen protector and would that fix it? Recommendations?
Thanks?
I doubt your carrier would fix this problem of yours because it's not a mistake of theirs, they'd only fix the phone or screen if it was a manufacturer problem, which it clearly isn't.. if I were you, I'd do an insurance claim on your phone, pay $100 or whatever you're supposed to pay, get yourself a new s3 and sell the one you have now for as much as you can get out of it..

Ummm....I think that's insurance fraud. When you do an insurance claim you have to return the one that's broken if I'm not mistaken. Otherwise if you claim is as "lost" or "stolen", or even anything else, they deactivate the imei so it can't be used. I'd be pissed if I bought a phone that was blocked from a person like that. Be careful about the advice you give. Its a similar concept if you do a warranty exchange through Tmobile. They expect their device back otherwise you get charged the restocking fee.

Generally all touchscreen phones will have fingerprints after awhile. Mine didn't till after a couple weeks ago did then they started showing up.
It is what it is. Either wash your hands all the time or get a good screen protector. Really is that simple.

My wife's white s3 has the same issues, but not my blue one. I am going to change the outer glass/screen on the phone, and then add a screen protector. Hopefully it is not the digitizer. The issue is that the area at the bottom left side of the screen has to be pressed hard for a response, sometimes it goes into things when swipe as if a had taped on those only.

go to Orilley's or any other car care sales place and get a small spray bottle of a detail wax.
it is not expensive, and I use the Mothers brand because of the price and results. (I also use it on my car)
spray a little on a microfiber towel, or if you don't have any, use a paper towel. Wipe the product all around on the glass area and keep wiping till the product starts to dry up. You do NOT have to press hard. After that, just wipe up the glass and you'll see it's just as good as new.
I also do the camera lens and the pictures come out MUCH, MUCH sharper!
Good Luck!

yes! but don't Flood the juice.... dampen a small spot using the rag jcovering your pointer finger and rub lightly all around the glass and keep rubbing till the liquid starts to dry, but not totally dry, and wipe off the residue. be careful not to get anything in the buttons and speaker ports. You might even use painters tape to mask out the speaker and home keys till you get a feel of the procedure down. You won't have to do it too often, just when you feel the glass is getting too "sticky""
good luck!

Thanks! I will try this when my screen gets too sticky. Right now it is alright, though it's not as smooth as day one.
Hi!
Particularly to people who've owned their GS3 for a number of months: has your screen become a oil/fingerprint magnet? It didn't used to be one in the beginning, but now I get it all the time (I got it in July 2012).
Sometimes, I get that odd rainbow effect when the oil just kind of "sits" on the screen. Disgusting, I know, but my hands aren't that oily...it just seems to pick up a lot more of it than it used to!
I just wipe it on my pants (lol): what do you guys do, if yours has this issue?
I think that's a property inherent to every touchscreen. Good thing about this one, though, is that it's very easy to clean.

I have a zagg HD invisible skin. Super easy to clean. Don't even know its there.

Its developed micro scratches that are holding in the oils more.

@CZ Eddie
If I tilt just right in the light, I do have some faint tiny scratches on the screen, but the "finger smears" are all over the screen (i.e. not localized to the scratches). But, I can see them playing a small part...
@dLo GSR
The oleophobic coating! That actually makes a ton of sense, as it just attracts oil like crazy. I Google'd it and it's a known problem with Apple iPhones and iPads (even the iPhone 5's manual says the coating will wear off!). Samsung's manual is worthless in this regard, but I don't think they've got anything better than Apple.
@KorGuy
Yeah, I think I have two options: screen protector (which will also protect against scratches) or re-apply the oleophobic coating (as stated through this iFixIt guide). Hmm...I need to sleep on this (the screen protector looks a lot simpler, haha).

Yea man mines the same way. When I first got it, it was very resistant to fingerprints now one text message and it's nasty! Have you used any cleaners? I asked my gf to clean my screen and she used windex and I think that may have assisted in taking it off Now I'm using Spigen Ultra Nano Clear and it's great! Anyway, keep me updated if you reapply oleophobic coating. Would like to know how it works!

Oh, HOLY SNIPPETS. I totally forgot; about a month ago, I used a lens cleaner on the screen! I just checked it....90% alcohol. That probably made this a little premature. Shucks. Whale, that's not the worst thing to happen, haha.
Totally! It might be a few weeks until I get everything, but I'll deliver with either the screen protector I chose or how the reapplying of the coating went.
Cool beans. Thank you, mates!

This is exactly what has happened. For this reason, I don't clean my screen unless absolutely necessary.
you have two options, buy this http://www.amazon.com/Anti-fingerprint-Oleophobic-SmartPhone-necessary-yourself/dp/B008HVBU9O
or just apply RainX, it will make it more easy to clean.

I used to have Ghost Armor, but after it got all yellow and orange peely, I threw in the trash. Now I use a super cheap screen protector that came with my really nice case, but its a fingerprint magnet.
Can I just apply RainX to it and it will be better? I have RainX in my garage.

Right...I didn't know about RainX working here (wouldn't it stop hydrophillic things, like water, but not hydrophobic things, like oil?), but it also only lasts 3-4 months on a car (http://www.rainx.com/tips-information/faqs/), so maybe 1 year on a phone? How do you know it's safe to use on the phone?
Yes, the Fusso I listed above; it again only lasts for 3-6 months. Here's a review posted last week of someone using it on their iPad: generally positive, but a commenter also mentions some car waxes as cheaper alternatives.

I didn't think the GS3 had an oleophobic coating.
Is there any way to prevent this? or should I just keep cleaning it?

Since iPhone also uses gorilla glass I wouldn't think it would be a problem. But I'm still waiting on someone to try these products first!

From what I've read the best way to clean your screen is to use distilled water and a microfiber cloth. Supposedly the toxins in tap water can be harmful to your screen. You can get a gallon of distilled water at the grocery store for like 70cents, which is what I've been doing since I bought my screen protector and so far oleophobic coating is still intact!
Sent from my SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
Unless you're living somewhere where the tap water is not treated, there shouldn't be any toxins in your tap water. If there are, you've got much bigger problems than oily smartphone screens... There will be some minerals in there and maybe fluoride. I doubt there's anything in tap water that would damage your screen, not that there's anything wrong with using distilled water. In either case, a damp microfibre cloth or a drop of water on your screen wiped with a microfibre cloth should be very effective at cleaning the screen and probably much safer than alcohol or solvent based cleaners (although the literature I've read on Gorilla glass suggests it's resistant to alcohol, acetone and a number of other chemicals, but maybe over time they do wear down the coating).
In any case, I'm really responding to this thread because I recently discovered this product:
http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/HOW-TO-COAT-Anti-Fingerprint-Oleophobic-Coating-by-yourself/9682/
Purchase at: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008HVBU9O?tag=ifixitam-20
Here's one with a few reviews: http://www.amazon.com/API-Fingerpri...&ie=UTF8&qid=1361976179&sr=1-1&keywords=fusso
I personally wouldn't put a lot of faith in anything from Monster (maybe they're better now but to me they will always be the company selling ludicrously overpriced HDMI cables and suing anyone with "monster" anywhere in their name regardless of context). But this product looks interesting. It seems to be similar to the original coating used on Gorilla and similar glasses.
I'm wondering if it adds scratch resistance and reduces visibility of existing scratches. If so, I think I'd prefer adding a coat of this every 3 months than using a screen protector. I have a semi-broken HTC phone with the original Gorilla Glass which happens to have a small but visible scratch on it. I think I'm going to order one of these and use the HTC screen to test it on. If it works well I'll try in on my S3 which has a much bigger scratch. I suspect it will be very difficult to photograph but I'll post results when I get it.

I'll probably even try some Aquapel on my good ol' GS1 next time I treat my windshield! :good:
Wouldn't it be simpler to put on a screen protector? I've had a screen protector on mine since day 1 (not even costly, I think I got like 3 for less than $10), and its still going strong... hard to say its even there
