Broke my ET4G :( - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

So I turn to xda in my time of need. Do you guys know of any way I could replace this one without having to pay (or at least, pay too much)?
If I took it to a Sprint store is there any (fake) story I could tell to get them to give me another one?
I was getting out of my car on my first day of school today and it hit the gravel, there appears to be only a small crack on the inside of the glass towards the top left of the screen yet the entire screen doesn't work. I can turn it on and what not and hear the start up noise.
Thanks for any assistance.

Generally, our guidelines regarding cracked screens are: 1 or 2 cracks an inch or under are eligible for repair or replacement. Anything over will be deemed DBR and will need to go through insurance.
You can post a pic up here and i'll tell you if i would deny or not. Even if you don't have TEP, if it's something they wouldn't deny then they'll do it for $35.

If you can get it fixed GET A HARD CASE! I didn't get insurance on my E4GT but got a nice case for it instead. Don't skimp.

Yea I believe in cases now since i've cracked two evo3ds in the past 3 months which is why i had to switch to the galaxy

After examining the screen closer, it appears as though the crack is on the inner part of the screen, the outside of the screen has no damage whatsoever. I can't post a picture sorry..but I'd say the crack (which is kind of a radial crack in all directions) spans an inch or two at the most.

Maybe he doesn't have a camera? Wow.

Use your front camera and a mirror.
Edit: Didn't see the part about it not working altogether... tough cookies bro. You could hose the whole system and try to take it back to the store and tell them it won't boot, and hope that since it isn't screen related they will take it back.

You dropped it without a case on it and it broke, and you want to have Sprint pay for it?

No, he's begging for help in making up a story that will get Sprint to pay for his clumsiness. That means he's looking to scam them but is admittedly not smart enough to pull it off on his own.
Just sell it on eBay as "new in box" - should get you the same amount of karma points and some cash to boot!

Pay? Not necessarily, just want it to be fixed. This was an accident. The action I took was getting out of my car, i take responsibility.

I wouldn't say I was begging, I had a question and thought this forum would be a good resource.

Just to let you know why people are flaming you. When people break their stuff, and it's their own fault, then figure out a way to get the company to pay for the cost... that drives the prices up for everyone. So that's why some people are getting heated over this. I personally don't care, just letting you know their side of it.

Should've bought a case/Not be careless. This is why there are so many requirements and deductables, because people try to scam the company trying to help them. Just buy a new screen and fix it yourself.

Take the phone to a full service and repair location and tell them the truth, they can tell anyways there's only two reasons the screen won't light up. Either the screen died out or its physical damage. Repair techs are under strict guidlines now days I know this because I am a technician for Sprint. They are going to examine the phone closely and will be able to identify the cracked screen even if it is underneath the glass. The good news is if you have TEP and they do an asurion claim, they can bill you the $100 charge on your sprint bill so you can pay it later.

Take it to sprint, but good luck they suck I have six lines and five of them been flagged with severe water damage. The techs will find every excuse not to replace your phone...

They kind of have to refuse a free replacement for water damage dude...they will get charged back almost full cost of the phone for your screw up, sounds pretty reasonable.

My niece has a epic4g her power button broke, I took it to sprint and the tech told me that was severe water damage that was the motherboard, I went to second sprint store and the tech almost gave me a new phone until she saw the report, and denied me a replacement too. I got a housing from ebay and fix it my self.

And it was not water damage, she told me once a report is made can't be change by another tech rep and that she was sorry it happen to me.

Shattered Screen - warranty?

I dropped my phone from about 2 feet up (fell out of pocket while getting out of the car). My screen shattered. I was shocked as I'd dropped it before without any problems. Also, I thought the screen protector that shipped with this was supposed to make it nearly shatterproof (or so I was told upon being sold).

My question is whether this will be covered under warranty or not. I bought this at a rogers retail location in Canada and use it on the Rogers network in Canada as well.
Thanks.

+1, why would they pay for your clumsiness , and jesus, if I'd dropped it once already and got away with I certainly wouldn't be letting that happen again.
Warranty????You are not serious..
I drove my merc of a bridge into a lake and the damage wasn't for the merc dealer strangely enough, but hey, if you get warranty let me know, so I can sue my merc dealer

Thanks for the info all. I was only asking because when sold I was told that such small drops wouldn't result in this type of damage. If I'd known, I would have waited for something with gorilla glass. Taking from the car analogy, the dealer basically said I could drive the car into walls at slow speeds, just don't drive it off a bridge. I'll do everything I can to get a new one. I don't car if the dealer is out of pocket.
Any idea how much these things usually cost to get fixed?
Here in Holland you can get your screen fixed for around 100 euro, which is about 150$ US. But officially through the dealer they ask twice that amount, I scattered the screen of my x10 a few weeks before I get my arc by walking into a desk a bit painfully...
For the x10 the screens were for sale on ebay, I don't know if they are for the arc, also there are several people who wrote how to change the screen yourself.
The car example was just a cynical joke, mate, blame my black sense of humor for that....;-)

If you had paid for your initial subscription/sign up fee with a premium Visa (or any other premium credit card), you maybe able to get the credit company to cover your accident. I assume its not cheap and fast getting it repaired. Good luck!

That's a matter to take up with the retailer you purchased from - there is no such thing as a shatter-proof screen and you should never be sold a phone on that basis.

Gorilla Glass is just scratch-resistant, it's not shatter-proof either.
There'd be just as high a chance that the same drop would've cracked the screen on a Galaxy S or some other handset with Gorilla Glass as it did your Arc's screen.

ha ha ha. I'll give it a shot. I'm already in a big argument with my provider (Rogers) over their quality of service which I'm probably going to leave them anyways. I get a whopping 0.05 Mbps where i live with 4 bars on 3g. tower issues near by they acknowledge but never fix (used to always force me back to 2g until I found test mode to set 3g only).
I really like this phone though and am willing to pay to get it fixed, which is where my stupid provider is going to screw me around. $25 to get it sent out to see how much its going to cost ... pay activation fee ($35?) to get my old phone activated while its gone, pay the cost of fixing the screen (shouldn't be more than, $200 they said but likely around $150), then pay an activation fee to get the phone back on again. Maybe the person telling me this didn't have a clue, but if that's the case, they've lost all business from me.
Anybody know of any third party repair places in Canada?
Thanks
Activation fee?
Surely you just put your SIM in the other handset and that's it?
As for third-parties, didn't I see someone say that Sony sells the handsets directly in Canada?
Is that's the case, they'll have some sort of repair service as well.
Why don't you visit one of the Sony Style stores.. I know they sell the Arc too
i used to work for a (private owned) rogers dealer and we send out all sony ericsson phones to Flextronics (details here). they are the only SE repair center in Canada. give them a call first to see if you are able to send your phone in directly (out-of-warranty repair) or if you have to go through a rogers dealer and have them send it in.
the repair estimate is usually around $35 and if you go through the dealer, the shipping is included. estimates can take up to 4 weeks. but definitely give them a call first and they'll fill you in on the details.
And please don't forget to get insurance next time. As they say here in the Philippines..
Once is enough. Twice is too much. Three's Stooges!
Had mine for accidental damage and cost me around US$20+.
I know Rogers offers Handsets Protection Guarantee. My device can get fixed when I break it or something for the first time. That's what they told me while I bought my Arc. Not sure how that works though. Maybe that will help you lower the costs.
P.S. I can always switch between my unlocked phones by just plugging in my SIM card without an activation fee.

I guess the combination of cold pavement and face down is also bad for phones. Surprisingly the case stayed on and tried to do its job. Now I have to try to get the local Sprint store to do a screen replacement. Thank goodness for insurance but damn waiting for them to open.
Not sure if I should be happy or not that my SGP Steinhall Oleophobic screen protector isn't in yet.
Anyway, you guys know if they will try to push a refurb phone on me or just do the screen replacement?
ouch that's gota hurt
From what I've read in the forums it cost more to replace the screen than to do a warranty replacement. And a Sprint repair tech said Sprint doesn't have the screens.

Thats what I am afraid of. Anyone know of a link online to order it from. I would rather do it myself if necessary so I don't have to lose my phone setup. I know it is restoring a backup once i flash something else back onto it but ugh. Just want to keep it.
If you have the total equipment protection you can file the claim here:

I used it to replace a cracked screen and got the replacement the next day.

But mine was a more or less a screen defect. It had a heavy blue tint at off angles.
I was told that they aren't allowed to open the phone up for repairs for 3 months according to the agreement they have with Samsung. beyond a reset and battery replacement, they either give you a new phone for software malfunction or for physical damage refer you to an insurance claim. My buddy works in this repair center and tried to look for the screen part but nothing. I don't mind. I picked up a cheap screen protector to keep the glass shards out of my fingers til the replacement comes in. No biggie.

Huh, weird, dunno about that. But they swapped out mine pretty quick.
Sucks what happened to yours, I've always been paranoid about dropping mine, seeing this doesn't help my paranoia at all...
At Sprint we will get you a free replacement for defects if you have TEP - but if it's your fault (like a cracked screen, or water damage) you have to pay a deductible to the insurance. You can call them and find out at 1-800-584-3666. Sorry, man.
Same thing happened to me. Phone fell about 3 feet, the screen cracked, but mine wouldn't even turn on. The Sprint repair store wouldn't touch it. The Corporate store wouldn't swap it out and I had to file a claim. The good part is, Asurion sent me a brand new phone instead of a refurb. ifixit.com did a tear down on the E4GT and the Super AMOLED + screens are fused to the midplane. They had to use tons of heat and guitar picks to get it off, which will make for an expensive replacement part or repair since it is fused like that. Sprint DOES NOT replace screens anymore under TEP which is unfortunate. I guess it got too expensive, so now if you crack your screen you will be referred to Asurion.
Sorry to hear that. Any hardened glass is going to be more scratch resistant, but more brittle as a result.

Smashed Screen

I smashed my gs 2 today and was wondering if anyone knows how much it will cost to replace i have the premium handset protection plan
http://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-1722
Looks like it'll cost you around 135.
You might be able to do better if you go to a corp store.
Lets all take a moment to say a prayer for a wounded SGSII
What? It costs $135 even with the "premium" protection plan?
I paid 165.00 including shipping but had to order two of them and that was out of china... took a couple of weeks too. You might find a better price for the screen somewhere but pretty much nobody actually has them here in the US yet...
I've still got an extra screen if you want to try to talk it out of me by PM...
I also work for a small computer store locally and we do screen replacements on cell phones....

the screen has a foam base, no adhesive, most of the adhesive is at the edges and top and bottom of the screen and will stay on the phone frame if you are careful so you only have to worry about the LCD itself, I made a couple of 1mm tape strips and put them on the back of the LCD just to keep it from vibrating or getting broke loose from the screen (like that would actually happen)...
there is a light bar at the bottom of the screen for the buttons, it's easier to let it come out with the screen and then remove it later and set it back in the phone frame. The light bar has lots of adhesive on it too.
If you preserve enough of the original adhesive in the phone frame there is no reason why a bit of contact cement (rubber cement) wouldn't hold the LCD in just fine too.
I got my screens from globaldirectparts, you have to sign up to use them but they have quite a bit of sgsII parts...

I really appreciate all of the information. I was going to buy some 3m 2mm adhesive strips (probably a roll) and a screen and have at it. I used to repair iphone screens a LOT, so I have experience in the field, I just know this phone is a little more pain in the ass.

Directly from the T-mobile PHP information on their website.
If you receive a replacement wireless device, it may be new or remanufactured.
• If the same make and model you claim is not available, a similar make and model may be substituted.
• You may also receive generic manufacturer accessories.

The tax id field on their site you can use your SS number for it, I would suggest changing at least a couple of numbers in it though as they have no need for that info for small purchases. The sign up form is automatic and not screened so you will have access as soon as you submit the information...
It took a threatening email to them to get them to ship but i had the parts in about three days once they did ship! I would guess they are a drop shipper or had to source the parts elsewhere... they do have a US distributor too but there doesn't seem to be any stock for sgs II parts from the US distributor...

Thanks! All great info. I actually found what I wanted on eBay, screen already in the front frame (lcd, digitizer, button lights, etc.) for $189 shipped. It's from Hong Kong but they promise 7 day business for US customers and they have decent reviews and still at 100%. If they don't pan out, I'll go your route. May I ask why you had to use a threatening email for them to send?
Just ordered the eBay screen, $185 - LCD, Digitizer, Frame & Bezel with tools. Steep, but hell, it's gotta get done. I'll probably take pics and do a small tut for those interested.
Just hope it doesn't take a month to come in lol.

First claim with Asurion

Got in a motorcycle wreck on July 8th and ever since then voice calls have been impossible to hear or be heard clearly. I wrecked in the rain up in the North Carolina mountains and my phone took on a lot of water as I desperately tried to get a signal to call for help. I walked, but my bike was totaled.
Anywho, just filed my first claim ever with Asurion. Filing the claim was easy and they say they will overnight my new device on Monday and I should have it on Tuesday. I had them bill the $150 deductible to my Sprint bill. I'll post back with an update once I receive my phone. Hope it's painless. Well, less so than totaling my beloved Bandit 1250 at least.

I'm an ATGATT guy... All The Gear All The Time
I would have easily had a broken leg and ankle if it wasn't for my boots.
My leg is still swollen 3 weeks later.
Ill take swollen over broke or even dead any day again glad your allright!
damn that sucks big time. I used motorcycles as my daily driver for about 8 years straight. And definitely had my fair share of wrecks.
Some of them I am surprised it wasn't ALOT worse. glad you made it out alright. good thing is, you get to replace with new shiny aftermarket parts =]
every time i went down, I made sure I bounced back twice as hard. Had 2 custom paint jobs and other goodies
They totaled her out and hauled her off.
I still have a 91 CB750 Nighthawk to get me to work. I'm going to upgrade the suspension and use that for mountain runs for the rest of this season. This winter or spring I hope to pick up a 2012 Ninja 1000 with ABS. ABS would have saved me in this instance.
Glad your ok.. but two things come to mind...
1) if the wreck was not your fault.. you might be able to get the other guys insurance (or even your own if you're claiming) to pay the deductible on the phone.. After all they'd pay for contents of a car to a reasonable amount, no reason why a cycle shouldn't get the same treatment.
2) Next time if you suspect the phone is only water damaged (no cracks , dents etc..) you can save yourself the deductible in many cases.
There's a great little trick you can do to dry out the phone in 1-2 days and usually make it good as new.
1) Place the phone in a plastic baggie, doesn't matter what kind.. you're going to leave the end open.
2) Place about 1 cup of dry instant white rice in a 2nd plastic baggie, this one must be able to seal shut.
3) Place your phone, in bag 1, inside the bag with the rice. (The bag 1 is so rice particles do not get into your phone). Make sure the end of bag 1 is not folded under or otherwise obstructed, you want air to get in bag 1.
4) Seal up back 2, so you now have a bag of rice, with another bag with phone inside it.
5) Place the bag in as much direct sunlight as possible.. such as on a window sill and wait
Over time, the moisture in the phone will be drawn into the rice. Typically this can take between 24 and 72 hours depending on level of moisture.
I have used this trick myself when my Evo 4G got drenched in water, as a coffee pot full of water exploded over top it I called Assurion paid the deductable and waited.. however they were OUT of my phone and it took them almost 7 days to get a new one shipped out overnight. I was so pissed (epecially knowing any store near me had them in stock) that i started looking online and found this trick... tried it and my original phone was working once again perfectly before the Assurion one arrived. Unfortunately once you make a claim you cannot cancel it, so I did end up sending mine back and keeping the 'new' one.
Anyway.. glad your OK.. maybe invest in one of those waterproof, crash proof cases/boxes for you to keep your phone in on the bike
lucky you walked away a live mate
I'm sorry to hear about your bike if there's anything I can assist with.. let me know I know some good mechanics and repair engineers

You broke your phone? Bummer
Oh yeah, phone was the last thing I'm sure you were worried about was the phone although you did try to make a call for help
I have a total of four phones on my account, two months ago I made a claim and was able to bill the deductible to my Sprint account... a month later I made another claim on a different phone and I was unable to bill it to my Sprint account. I was told by Assurion and Sprint that they don't allow it to be bill to Sprint. I asked how long as the policy been in affect and they said for a year. I quickly called BS on it because I did it last month!
Anyway, glad you're doing good and that bodily injury was limited as much as it was...
Asurion has stated that due to demand they are setting a time frame of 1-3 business day to send me a replacement phone. Not shipping today and me having it tomorrow as previously stated.
On the bright side, hope this means I'll be getting new instead of refurb.
Got my replacement device today. It's new in a sealed box.
Overall, I give the process a thumbs up. :good:

I got my replacement almost 2 weeks ago and can assure you it's new. Order it now while you can cause this will more than likely change soon as more devices get turned in.

Quick teardown of the optimus g..

I work in a repair shop, and this phone seems new enough that I couldn't find a teardown anywhere.. so we snapped some quick pictures so people will know what to expect. It is pretty straight forward, not a whole lot can go wrong(for the most part).

Remove the two screws on the bottom, then with guitar picks, your finger nails, or something that won't damage the screen/frame(non metal is ideal) pull the edges of the frame away from the phone- the bottom is most difficult, that is where you have to put in the work.
Also note where the volume and power buttons are, there is flex cable behind there- do not slide tools along inside as you may rip them, just carefully pry the cover from the sides avoiding those as needed.. also remember part of the back is glass(at least that is what I read and it appears to be).
Pull this frame off by removing the screws from the holes that you can obviously see. If I get time later I may circle them in red, but it should be obvious.
Two screws to remove from the mic/speaker at the bottom, then it can be pried off- be careful, but not a lot of risk of damage.
You should be able to see the connectors that were removed to remove the board- as I said, this is a quick walkthru, not a detailed teardown- enough to give the general idea.
This is with the screen removed- basically you heat the front of the screen and the back of the frame to loosen the glue that holds the lcd/digitizer in- there IS glue around the edges of the LCD(and on our replacement) which makes it nearly impossible to remove without breaking.. but you likely wouldn't be removing it unless it is broken. As you can see, there is no special connectors or board on the bottom to light up the digitizer you have to be careful of, so this isn't that difficult.
Here is our replacement screen, there weren't many vendors that had them, but this was found on ebay and appeared to be quality very close to the one removed, enough we couldn't see a difference. Make sure you use plenty of adhesive if it wasn't already applied before you purchased it.
Reverse to put back together- we had 0 issues, the most difficult part is removing the shell without breaking the glass on the back of the phone.
Hopefully this is helpful to someone, or at least will show them it isn't TOO difficult. Feel free to hit the thanks button if it was helpful, if it is appreaciated I may throw a more detailed guide up when we get another in for repair.

great info. a video would be awesome?
thks
I have tried to replace the screen as well. I think the hardest part is to take off the back cover. The place near the power and volume is actually pretty easy to break.

Well, the tech who was doing the work wanted to take his time to make sure nothing was harmed in the process.. now that we see it is like the average teardown, we could definitely do a video on the next one- that was the plan.

Do you mean the power and volume flex cables that are glued to the edges beneath the back cover? We've done so many phones at this point we sort of forget how simple it is to make a mistake there.. I'll note that in the teardown instructions above.
If anyone else has any feedback or suggestions, or want to provide better pictures, let me know and I will gladly update- I just wanted to make sure there was SOMETHING out there for people who may be looking for it..
Since this phone is susceptible to glass cracks on the back due to temperature change (Like the one I purchased), a tutorial on how to replace just the glass on the back would be helpful.
Thanks!

Well i'm part of the replacement group.
Dropped my phone a few days ago, bottom right quarter of the screen has no touch now and a nasty crack in my screen.
Which seller did you buy your replacement screen from? And was quality good?
I will try and post a video, but this is my business phone and am in a rush to get it back to fully usable condition. Thinking i may end up buying the LCD/Digitizer/Glass as I have never separated a digitizer/glass from the LCD before.
I just got mine back today from an LG service centre. I had the same crack about 3/4" from the bottom with no functionality below that. Total cost of repair was $95. Not too bad since I saw the LCD/Digitizer for $50 on ebay. Plus I retain my mfg warranty.

Which provider? I wouldn't mind sending mine away and having some warranty still.

Sasktel. LG uses a company out of Ontario for the phone repairs in Canada. Their name is All Tech Neek. I also contacted them independantly and they will fix your phone without dealing with your service provider. I just let Sasktel handle the shipping and stuff. Also, they require a deposit prior to cover shipping and assessment labour incase you decide not to have the phone fixed, but the deposit goes toward the repair if you decide to have them repair it.
Hope this helps!!

Is the back piece of gorilla glass replaceable for sure?

I am trying to change a cracked screen. What would you say is the easiest or best way to heat the phone up to remove the front screen?
I just ordered a new lcd/digitizer and it didn't come with any adhesive. What kind of adhesive should I use and do you know of any stores that sell it. Really don't feel like having to wait longer while I order it.
Btw, I am I Canada (Calgary area) if there are any canucks that know where I can pickup what I need?
Thanks!
anyone with cracked e975 model?
Not sure if this operation can be in the DIY work. Better go to a gsm service.
