Lesson Learned - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I've had the Nexus for about 2 weeks now and been impressed with it overall.
Which comes to the biggest mistake I've made now. I left the phone on the table and my sis's kids were in the house. Before you get any ideas they did not drop it. However, when I caught my nephew with the phone it was rebooting. I was wondering how he managed to do that considering I had screen lock enabled with a PIN.
In any case, when restart completed everything was blank. Somehow he managed to do a factory reset. All my programs were gone. All local data wiped out.
Good thing most of my apps were back in a few minutes but lost quite a bit of other stuff.
Lesson: Never leave phone unattended.

Welcome to XDA.
I guess he found his way into recovery and wiped? lol.

I bet he hit one of those magical bottom combinations which only kids know that happen to be the right one for factory reset lol

Thanks for the welcome.
It's either a combination or perhaps too many tries on the PIN?
I'm guessing the latter because I've got office email sync and it required permissions on remote wiping etc.

Have you considered deliberate intention?

Man, I never leave my phone out of arms reach of me lol. Couldn't stand the thought of some little kids molesting it!

This. Can we get a background check on the kid? Maybe past criminal records??
Kidding of course

I'm pretty sure it was me. I pressed the button - the remote self-destruct button. It didn't work.

Too many incorrect PIN attempts will force a factory reset? If that's true it is a HUGE design/security flaw.

So if I want to piss someone off I can just grab his phone when he's not around it and enter a wrong pin several time until his phone gets wiped? Awesome!

If you really want to piss someone off, you can take his phone when he's not around and simply throw it out of the window.
So, we should not leave our phones in a place where someone may wanna piss us off.

Does your kid by any chance works for apple? He might be trying to destroy one android phone at the time. Got to start them young

That would only make sense in this context if the phone was somehow attached with a lock, and after repeated failed attempts to pick the lock the phone would catapult itself out the window.

[Q] Sprint store Update?

My wife took her Evo to the Sprint store to get a new cover for her phone. She set her phone on the counter to get a credit card when a Sprint employee grabbed her phone and hooked it up to a computer. Any ideas on what they did..... btw she is rooted and now recovery is acting all screwey. Thanks in advance.
Dave
How long was it on the computer?
They may have run SLATE on it, which goes through all settings in the device to check for errors and battery saving methods. It shouldn't screw with recovery but it WILL NOT work on a rooted device.
She said it was pretty quick. Maybe the saw the super user icon or whatever and didn't do it. But her recovery is acting weird.... when I hit reboot it goes to the cwm icon and I have to do a battery pull to power down. Not a big deal I can still backup, restore, flash etc but can't power down from recovery screen.

maybe a recovery re-flash will clear that up?

Yea, I think that feature was implemented in the last update of the xda app. It definitely has not always been there. I just figured it out a short while ago myself! It comes in handy, for sure. Burn up those 5 thanks per day even quicker! Haha.

While the techs at the Sprint store were working on my phone, they had another phone that someone had left with them so they could move everything over to their new one (or something to that effect). There were nudie pictures that the dude had taken of his girlfriend, and instead of just looking past that & moving the files, they were actually looking at the photos. They told me that they get that a lot - people bring in their phones with dirty pictures of their girlfriend and ask them to move them over. I guess that's what you get for not knowing how to transfer files AND leaving said files with horny 20-something male employees. So you know they do look through people's phones instead of just doing their jobs.
But yeah, they shouldn't have just picked up the phone & started messing with it. Call Sprint and complain... if you complain enough you might get something out of it.

What would I say? They effed up my wifes rooted Evos custom recovery? Her phone has been acting a little dopey since they did whatever they did.
For your recovery issues... have you tried reflashing the recovery?
And I would definitely call up Sprint. You just tell them that your wife was in there, buying a case, and was getting her card to pay when they took her phone without asking or explanation and plugged it up. Tell them that buying a case is irrelevant to running tests on the phone and demand an explanation for it. Tell them that your phone is acting finicky and that it wasn't before they plugged it up. They'll have to explain for themselves or back into a deal. Oh how many times I have called, and they have offered something to make up for their mistakes....

im contract free because sprint sucks and i call them on it. ive also received hundreds in credits...your voice needs to be heard. dont feel bad about complaining...it may take many calls and many different reps but stick with it. escalate, escalate, escalate. also, dont forget the better business bureau is on your side.
i hope you(op) get this rectified to your satisfaction...
i myself am disheartened about sprint services being turned off, disabled or roaming agreements being terminated across the country and may switch to either other carrier.

[Q] Lost my phone :( Any way to track??

Hi People,
as some of you may recall, just a couple of days back i decided to do some flashing with my wife's play. Installed ICS beta & DarkForest add-on.
However, from last night i am not able to find the phone
As luck may have it, the battery was dead too.
There was just a 15 min time frame when the maid was around the house (i know it's wrong to suspect but hell, i've turned the house upside down) when it went missing.
I wanto know is there any way i can trace the phone?
The sim is (or was) still in the phone at that time when the charge ran out...
And of course i have all the original documentation for the IMEI numbers and stuff..
Is there a way i can track the baby down?
Any help is appreciated!
As far as i can recall no technolgy can track a dead phone.
Unless the phone gets turned on...No and even then it's a long shot. What you need to do is install this app via google play https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lookout.labs.planb&feature=more_from_developer and if your phone is turned on+connected ot the internet when its connected to the internet + logged into the google account you download plan B with you may just be able to find the phone.... Other than that your only option is to contact the authorities.

My GNEX just got stolen!!

I stepped out to grab lunch and I suspect the guy at the deli took my phone when I put it down to get my wallet out. Of course he turned the device off, so I can't call it. I checked Google latitude and it shows my last location as IN FRONT OF the deli, but since the guy shut the phone off its been idle for two hours. Unfortunately I dont have a password on the device so my concern is he will get in there and mess around with my emails and so forth. Is there anyway for me to remotely setup a password/pincode on the device so that when he does turn it on its locked? Assuming its locked I should be able to track it using Google Latitude or perhaps install one of those other apps. Any help would be greatly appreciated...
disassociate it from google and change your password so he cannot access that. otherwise there is little you can do at this point. also contact your carrier to get it kicked off the network as well.

Not sure if this would work but you could log into the playstore and download the prey project app and make it install on your phone and then from there possible set it up from there website to add a lockcode and such
Im not sure though if the app will automatically download as soon as its turned on and if the app will work if you dont set it up though your phone

Those links are great, but they appear to be for Google Apps users. Is there something similar for "regular" Google users who don't have Google Apps?
If I change my Google password what happens when the thief turns my phone back on? Will he still be able to see the old messages in my Gmail inbox, as well as all my contacts? Also, if I change the password now what happens to a pending installation from a service such as Android Lost? Will it still be able to install or will it fail since it cant authenticate to the device? Lastly, if I wait for Android Lost to authenticate and then change my Google password will it still work?
Dude. I stead of messing with apps go back to the frikin deli and see if they found your phone. Tell them you have a tracking device and it says its last location was the deli and where you last left it. Why assume the deli cashier room it. Some Joe behind you could have taken it also and turned it off and ran off . That's what I would do instead of installing apps.

Personally, I would get some animal tranquilizers and wait for the deli worker to be alone. Knock him out and bring him back to the deli after hours. Then put plastic tarps over everything and duct tape him down to the prep board. Using a scalpel, cut his cheek and save a drop of blood for your trophy. Put pictures of your GNex around the room and talk to him about his crime before plunging a huge ass knife into his chest. When done, cut up his body and place the parts into 2-3 garbage bags. Finally, take a boat out on the water and dump the bags.
That should take care of the problem...until the next phone is stolen...

How difficult would it be to fix my power button?

My power button stopped working. It's not the actual button, but i guess whatever is behind it. Does anyone know what the process is for replacing something like that? Luckily, I'm able to use an app to enable lockscreen and another app to use the volume rocker to wake the device, so I actually don't NEED to have it fix. Of course, if and when I decide to sell, i want it working.

My phone has started to do that as well. It randomly restarts. I started having this problem when I clicked yes on the ota update from samsung while using a blazer rom. I wiped everything, running codename android's jellybean rom and still having these problems. I thought it was a battery issue as I had a previous battery that restarted every so often and the battery would be wiped out. Here, the battery doesn't get wiped out but it suffers a significant drop. In the previous case, the phone never restarted when connected to a charger but now, even the charger doesn't seem to help.
Mine started doing the same thing. I took it to sprint and they just sent me a new one. But a lot of ppl on the forums are having that issue

So since yesterday her device has been randomly gong into airplane mode.. You can turn it off but it will switch back again in just a few minutes. She has had it just over a week and this just started yesterday.
She barley has any apps installed. And hasn't downloaded aided anything has permissions for changing that state..
I factory reset it. But that doesn't seem to have helped.
Any ideas? Should we just exchange it again?

50 minutes might be a bit small for a time window to judge helpfulness... that being said I would say you made the right call. It definitely should not be doing that, and it seemed you already ruled out any sort of app or custom tinkering that may have driven such odd behavior. Hope the "third time's the charm" idiom holds for you on this one!

Haha yeah.. I'm impatient..
And I hope so. I consider this phone to be a top dog device.. Of it goes wrong again I might just have T-Mobile switch her to something different.
