[TIP] Face Unlock sometimes doesn't recognize your face? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hi there. How many of you like the Face Unlock feature in the GNex but find it annoying when the phone doesn't recognize your face and prompt you to the secondary unlocking method?
Well, I just noticed that ICS actually has an option called "Improve face matching" under settings->security which (I think) wasn't available in 4.0 and 4.0.1.
Just use it to take few more pictures of your face from different angles and in different light conditions. I just tried it and now my phone unlocks immediately even under low light or when held below my chin.
I know this isn't new news for a lot of you, but maybe a lot have overlooked it too.
Thank you

Nice, It seems to work better now!

Didn't catch that. Thanks! Cant wait to try it out.

Yea you should update your pic as often as you can in different environments to get a better response. I used it for a week and it got better the more I used it.

Compass doesn't work?

Hello.
Can someone check their compass? Mine doesn't seem to be working (properly)
Testing it with GPS Essentials and Google Skymap, when the phone is parallel to the ground, screen up and turned counter/clockwise, the compass doesn't change at all. In fact the only position it moves when when its in horizontal position with the screen towards me, but even then it doesn't show proper directions..
Here is the video I took how it supposed to work (HTC Inspire 4G on right) and how it actually works.
http://youtu.be/xxxS_HZsRLU
That seems bad! can anybody else confirm please? It will suck to do all the work we r doing for the phone only to have to return them cuz of a bad compass.
Mine ain't all to..reliable. It just goes all over place. If im looking North the damn thing decides to tell me that I'm actually facing South East or something.
First I went outside and tried out skymap and indeed the tracking didn't seem reliable.
I came back inside and installed a compass app: (Compass, by Catch.com).
At first run it asks you to move the phone in a figure 8 to calibrate the magnetic sensor. I did so...Then I got some strange dialog that said "Abnormal magnetic field detected. Please calibrate". While the compass app is running, if I put the phone on a table (or any flat surface) and just turn the phone, the North arrow should stay pointing at north. But on my Nitro it's not!! What's worse is that damned "Abnormal magnetic field detected" keeps coming back.
I tried doing the same thing with my old Nexus One and it works fine, no complaints about "abnormal magnetic field" and when you turn the N1 the North arrow keeps pointing towards north.
This has me VERY worried about this phone!! I noticed the other day that while using the Navigation the software seemed to be locked up (non-responsive when trying to bring up the menu) and if the "abnormal magnetic field" had a play in it, then that would explain it.
---------- Post added at 01:51 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:32 AM ----------
Also tried installing Sensor Test to see how the other sensors were looking...I didn't even know our Nitro has a Gyroscope! Nice! Would that gyro in any interfere? It shouldn't correct?
Just wondering, n i know it's somewhere on google But I like to tickle all u brainiacs out there to explain wat is the purpose of a gyroscope in a phone. I don't see why we really need it in a phone.
Yeah, if have something like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ORcu-c-qnjg
Then apparently it's not working...
If something is really broken in these phones, then I think we all need to reach out to LG and complain or can we have a class action lawsuit against them for selling broken products?
This morning I sent them email regarding the compass issue. Let's see if what they say about it.
But if more people confirm this issue, we could do something about, would need more publicity though.
Publicity is easy enough. Once we get a good amount of people confirming the issue, we can start sending out the story to different forums n tech news sites like engadget, begrudge, gizmodo, n even our beloved xda. Then we can start posting those news on LG's forum n see wat they will say.
We did a similar thing for the atrix before when at&t was throttling back the hspa+ speeds on our phones while iPhone 4 was getting full speed. In months down the road they fixed it.

Here's my suggestion. Everyone with this phone n r having the compass issue with it, please record a video or take pictures/screenshots of how the compass is going haywire. Upload it here, so that when the story hits the news, they can all see that its not just one phone but many. We need to upload as many proves as we can to make a valid statement.

mine shows the sun and a bunch of constellations around it when I pointed at the sun, when I move my phone around it seems to track properly. not sure if that helps
By "properly" do you mean as in HTC Inspire in my video? Or it takes a few seconds after you stopped moving for the image to catch up? - the latter is the best I could achieve after activating GPS and wait for 5 minutes...
I found [email protected]'s thread over at the LG Forums and added my comment as well. Please, anyone else having this issue also post there as that is an official LG Forum.

Also, for the Skymap app, there's another potential issue at play...Screen resolution. I tried going into Settings > Display > Screen Optimization and checked-on Google Skymap and that did seem to help the app (redraw was much smoother).

It actually makes sense, since Nitro's resolution is "huge" and not many apps are optimized for such beast.
In fact on HTC Inspire the screen scrolls almost flawlessly in skymap compare to Atrix 4G, with dual core processor, good GPU, but higher screen resolution.
getting interesting lol
I hadn't noticed the compass issue until you guys mentioned it. I did a side by side with an actual compass, and my nitro was nonsense, just all over the place. But actually, when I turned off auto rotate, it fixed it. Check it out on your phone. With screen auto rotate disabled, my compass (and everything else associated, like maps, sky map and compass app) works great, but once enabled, my phone doesn't know it's head from it's ass. Let me know if you guys see the same effect.
It does improve a little on some compass apps, but skypmap sees no difference.
Weird. In that case, my phone is unusual. The compass works pretty well now (for apps including skymap) when compared to my X10 and an Atrix. They're quite similarly accurate.
I wonder if this is just a simple fix we can do ourselves, like maybe updating a file or changing some values in a file. I remember there was a file that we replaced in the Atrix phones to improves its GPS pickup speed and accuracy. I dont know if we can do the same thing here. Let me look for that thread back in the Atrix forum.

Secure Face Unlock

I've played with the face unlock feature and find it works quite well so long as you have adequate front lighting, but the main drawback is that it can easily be defeated by someone with a picture of you. But, if you added voice recognition you should be able to improve the security quite a bit.
I'm thinking that if you entered a voice sample of, say, 20 words so that when you press the power button to begin the unlock sequence the display lists two of the words you previously entered and, along with the face recognition, the unlock should be very secure and just about as fast.
So, as a sequence, here's what I'm thinking...
1. Press power button
2. Face recognition recognizes you, then
3. Phone prompts you with two words that you have two seconds to respond with, then
4. If both steps pass the phone is unlocked -- if either step fails you are prompted to enter password.
Allowing only a couple seconds to respond with two words at random should make it all but impossible for someone to use prerecorded voice samples to unlock your phone.
It would be a bit faster to do both steps at the same time but I don't know what effect your moving lips would have on the face unlock.
Brian
Yeah it'd be cool, but how is that more secure or quicker than a strong PIN or alphanumeric password with data encryption?
Not to mention that all the times you're in a dark or loud place and you can't do one or the other (or both) of those to unlock the phone. It will always have to have a backup PIN or passcode that must be strong (or stronger), or its pointless. Having the face/voice unlock super secure doesn't mean anything because it'll always fall back to the PIN when it doesn't work (which you'd hope is the case with an intruder), and the PIN can potentially be defeated.
wow, do people really have other people just dying to get into their phone??? Sorry, I'm just kinda surprised at the concern.

There are some people like that. And if its that bad they need to be using a corporate BlackBerry with serious encryption and remote wipe
I had my Evo 4G stolen in August so, yeah, security is an issue.
Using a 4 digit pin/password would likely be as fast as any other method but what if you're wearing gloves. Also, a 4 digit pin is not real secure.
Another option would be the inclusion of a finger print scanner. You'd still have issues with gloves but the security would be quite high and the response pretty fast.

Sure you could unlock the phone with your face/voice while wearing gloves... then what? still have to take off the gloves to use the phone eventually...
There are devices with fingerprint scanners too if you need that.
If you're worried about your phone being stolen, buy handset insurance and run a program like lookout that can offer remote tracking and wipe. Putting face/voice combo lock on the phone isn't gonna stop them from snagging the phone and wiping it though.
with the current generation of speech recognition, talking to the phone almost always ends up looking siri.. i mean silly. i cannot help but laugh at people who try to talk, get misheard and then yell very slow words at their phone instead of just typing. and its not like they are driving (i use voice while driving to navigate), they are sitting in their office cubes.
Face unlock is a convinience feature, not really for high security. I have never used pins or patterns to lock my phone. Personally, i find it annoying and time consuming to have to draw a stupid pattern to unlock my phone. I have never lost my phone and i am very careful with it. So for me face unlock is like the happy medium, it works fast and offers somewhat of security. I mean lets face it, what are the chances of someone finding or stealing your phone having a picture of you?

THIS.
I went back to just using the slide unlock.
What I'd like to be able to do ultimately is use Tasker to switch between unlock methods. Just slide when I'm at home or at work, but face unlock elsewhere.
Face unlock is good enough for a misplaced or stolen phone. More than likely, a misplaced or stolen phone won't be obtained by a spy who has photos of you. (Unless of course you are some type of important person... most of us are not!) A common thief, or just a dishonest person wouldn't have the means to get past the unlock feature.

This. Face unlock is used in place of slide to unlock, with a bonus of having SOME security. Even Google themselves said that this feature is not a foolproof way to secure your phone.
Actually you don't even need a picture, it worked off my dad's face and we don't look anything alike - at least to humans.

That's because you have to train it. Most people complaining that it doesn't work well only set it up one time. When you go back to face unlock, it allows you to train it multiple times in different lighting levels, eyewear, beard, etc to make it better. I have trained it in almost pitch black where all you see is my nose and everything is grainy and it still unlocks.
I barely even look at my phone now at it instantaneously unlocks. But then again I probably have over 30 different profiles with different lighting and clothes to make a fast match with almost no lag.

Face Unlock: Could it be faster?

Hi,
A few months ago while I was watching Samsung announce the Galaxy Nexus for the first time, I remember them saying Face Unlock was so fast that they actually had a delay so that "it didn't look like there was no security at all".
That said, does that mean that there could be a possibility to remove that delay?
On our device face unlock takes a while because the camera needs time to start, then we have to wait for it to recognize our face. Maybe we can get it to work faster?
Discuss.

Dude mine works fast as hell its just lighting and all that if your saying the time it takes while its black try setting cpu higher see if it makes a difference
I tried the face unlock on the ICS rom and honestly I didn't even notice a delay the thing was fast as hell....
Face unlock is fast at recognizing the face, on our phone it takes 2-3 seconds for the camera to start up, at least for me and that's what the OP is talking about.
As far as I know that's not caused by a delay its just the camera software/hardware limitation maybe it can be improved in the future by Samsung but it could be a hardware limitation.
Also the phone may be waking up at a low frequency which could cause the delay as well.

This is what makes sense to me, and that's something people are just gonna deal with when you think about battery life of keeping the system able to pull up instantly.
I made a funny face and kept forgetting that I did. lol It was fun for a little while but low lighting it sucks.
Wonder if we could somehow get face unlock for v3.x.x ?

Picture Quality switching to a ICS ROM?

Did a quick search and didn't see anything. I don't know if it's my mind playing tricks on me or if it's just switching phones. Was on the SIII for a bit and just switched to a SII until more dev support is out.
The E4GT was 100% virgin stock earlier today.
I rooted and it was fine.
After installing Caluklin's 1.6 it seems like the picture quality dropped. Text seem to have rugged/fuzzy edges.
Am I imagining things or did I miss some dpi goods?
If this is crazy talk, just tell me. The only thing I changed was the display mode and set it to dynamic. Switched back to standard and it's still the same.

Well when I say picture, I don't mean the camera. I mean over all anything. Seems like something happened even on the home screen. The whole display looks rough.
Dynamic Screen Mode causing rough edges in ICS
I just received the over the air ICS update this morning and immediately noticed the same thing with the screen clarity.
After messing around with it all day I found out that it's only evident when the "Screen Mode" is set to "Dynamic"
A huge disappointment since the colors on the Epic 4G Touch pop like nothing else in dynamic mode.
But it seems ruined or at least not worth putting up with the jagged edges everywhere to have dynamic mode on now.
i have been asking about this for months. im glad to finally see someone else noticed it. it bothers me so much I am sticking to gb

it never came across my mind that it was intentionally, especially because i was using custom roms from leaks, in fact because so little people even notice it, it would kind of defeat the purpose wouldnt it?
it clearly doesnt look as good as gb on more than one eg4t i have tried, i guess everyone has different eyesight, ICS doesn't work for me on this phone because of it. disappointing. thanks for your help
Funny that I never noticed this before. Most likely because I had my phone set to 'standard' instead of 'dynamic'. When I did the change to dynamic & tested different apps I did notice jagged edges while on ICS.

Solution for bad compass?

I have been sorely disappointed with the compass on my Nitro. When I got the phone and it was on 2.3.5, the compass was amazing. But, as time has gone on, it has become useless.
I've looked through several forums and contacted LG directly. LG offered to take it in for warranty repair but, because of my job, I can't be without a phone for the 10 days that it would take to have it sent in.
My question is: Has anybody found a successful solution to the bad compass?
I have tried it on ICS 4.0.3 Leak, Stock ICS 4.0.4, CM9, CM10, and ParanoidAndroid.

Go back to stock gingerbread and see if your compass works there. If not, sorry bud, nothin I can do to help you except say send it for warranty repair. I got mine back in a week.

I'm in the same boat, check out this thread over at the LG Forums:

LG knows about the issue and suggests recalibration...But as you'll read that doesn't work for some people, or at least not for long (myself included) and someone even had a warranty replacement done and STILL had the same issues with the replacement!!

Interesting.
For me, it's not that the compass doesn't work at all, it's just usually inaccurate and slow to respond. For example, if you just rotate the phone slowly while flat on a table with a compass app open, "north" should be pointing the same direction the whole time. But it doesn't, it varies quite a bit, sometimes ridiculously far off depending on the direction the phone is pointing. I assume it's something to do with poor magnetic shielding or something.
The only thing that consistently works for me is drawing figure-8's, just like I had to do with my old Motorola Milestone.
1. Open compass application
2. Hold the phone above you, parallel to the ground, with the screen
3. Keeping the phone in the same relative position, wave your arm in large figure eights like you were painting the sky. (by "same relative position," I mean the phone stays parallel to the ground, screen skyward, and you swivel your hand while making the figure eights so that the phone doesn't swivel.
4.Make about six figure eights in a row without stopping. Try to keep the same path, phone orientation, etc. The bigger the figure eight, the better.
5. Bring the phone back down so you can see the screen. The compass needle should slowly swing to North, and then hold North - until you move. Repeat if necessary.
6. Repeat as necessary. I have to do it every time I want to use the compass
