[Q] About ICS and it's interface on Xperia phones. - Xperia Arc Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QoIsNYR7XJ8
I watched this video that shows the official ICS Rom being demoed on Xperia Arc. The first thing I noticed is that the interface is the same old horrible SE one. Does anyone know if the interface will look exactly like SE Gingerbread's stock one or if they will change it when the update is finalized (I read it lacks many features and it's just a "beta" for developers)? The stock ICS theme looks so much better than SE's interface.

Yeah I agree it looks to much the same hopefully it does come out with a bit of a newer fresher look when done.
Sent from my LT15i using XDA App

it's still a prototype.
just wanna show that SE is integrating some of the ICS features on the SE UI.
i'm sure they will update the whole thing.
interface came second, the first thing is the ICS features.
once they finish with that, then they can skin it with whatever they want. and i bet it's gonna wow us again, just like how they skin gingerbread.
can't wait for the final result. i'm sure it's gonna be sweeet

Hopefully you're right and they'll also update the look of the whole thing.
By the way, my main problem with the SE interface is that it looks very fancy and most widgets and "non stock" things look completely out of place in it. I hope they make a more "standard" looking interface, but still minimalistic and classy like the stock ICS one and with those little flourishes that make the SE interface "pretty".

They'll change the interface, imo.
It's too early for a clear statement atm either way.

just try doom's ICS alpha, its look little bit same as 2.3.4,i rather go for cm9,out of SE UI,waiting for its stable release..

TouchWiz UI or Plain Android

I really like the vanilla version of Android with nothing skinned or running on top like Sense UI or TouchWiz. Just wanted to get a sense of what prospective buyers think about it.
Edit: This might give the devs an idea of what people want on their phones, if given the choice.
From what I've seen of TouchWiz, am looking forward to it. Am kinda bored of Sense now.
I actually like the customizable horizontal app list, even if its a copy of the iphone's menu.
The only thing I dislike about it is that you get the little square of colored background behind each application, instead of just black, it just feels wrong. Rest of the touchwiz looks ok.
Didn't try stock android yet (using HTC sense on Desire atm), but I presume you can use an alternative launcher to get it working?
I really like stock, but Sense UI is even nicer sometimes but not always, I prefer the white in the Stock with the orange.
However, the dialer and contacts are nicest on Sense UI, especially the dialer, and also the Keyboard.
I really like what I have seen from TouchWiz so far and I am really looking forward to it, I like the additions they added and I prefer a lot more a horizontal menu over vertical where I get lost quickly in the Sense UI (on my magic).
TouchWiz looks well optimized, however I read that many Singaporeans are experiencing a bit of slow launch when launching applications but other than that it's very smooth they say. I even noticed in the videos it takes time to quit or open some applications. But it can be fixed.
I must say i'm a bit shocked at the results so far, however few there are. In my experience with TouchWiz I've only had headaches. Again that is my personal experience.
When this phone goes out to the masses I'm sure there will be development to suit all our tastes. Looks like I'll be rooting for the CyanMod port lol.
Lenovo Lephone looks nice too >_>
hehe yeah not many have that.
Either way, are you going to sell N1 or keep it when you get the sammy?
I never tried Touchwiz btw, many said that before it was bad but in this new galaxy S it's much better and smoother... but arrg people are having problems in Singapore with cameras not launching lol "memory error" problems.. wow.. very sad..
Maybe that's the beginning of headaches?? such a powerful phone with a very nice camera, I hope it comes out optimized since they have until the 17th of June.
Not to mention, users are having major problems in syncing the phone to pc and especially on macs. That is one major issues considering that you have some 13gb of storage on the phone.
If the Galaxy S comes to Tmobile I will try it out for a bit since I'm up for an upgrade, so I'll be selling either one when I find which i'll be happier with. hopefully it comes out to 200 on contract.
As a side note, the Motorola Extreme is looking very nice, just wish it wasn't on Verizon, expensive plans.
Its About the content :
Widgets + Icons = Sense UI
Gallery + Menu + Launcher = Vanilla Android
Music Player + Social = Sony's X10 UI
TouchWiz have nothing expect the gesture (if you slide a contact right you'll make a call , left to message) , i hope i get the option to turn it off like Sense
Touchwiz looks like a hybrid between iphone UI and android UI and what i liked about it is that it did toke the most notable advantages of both
and if you look closely at the UI you'll see that it's not just UI be it is packed media player and photo Gallary so it's a whole package
I've ordered this phone because the TouchWiz adjustments look minimal.
The only huge difference i can see is the program launcher and the docked bar.
Obviously other things are going to be slightly different but things that are already good in Android are still there, for example the Picture gallery is pure Nexus One.
As i see it TouchWiz just wanted to be Android from the start, a widget based homescreen interface, and because of that the Galaxy S just becomes Android with some improvements. And if thats not true then a flagship phone is bound to get some developers working so there are going to be options anyway!
In terms of the feature tweaks of TouchWiz (stuff like horizontal app launcher scroll, slide left/right on contacts to call/text, etc) I pretty much like everything Samsung's added/changed with TouchWiz. But in terms of pure aesthetics and graphical style, it is simply not nearly as polished as HTC's Sense or Vanilla Android.
hmm i'm considering getting this for as my first android phone but the touchwiz interface doesn't really appeal to me. I'd rather use the Sense and its widgets. Tried a htc desire and thought it was really nice
I do not appreciate TouchWiz,it looks uncomfortable and not very convenient !!! that is my personal experience.A plain android is OK !and I can use the launcher application to change the UI whenever I like!!but if anyone who can develop a UI which is more beautiful,I will have a try!!!
Can't you install something like launcher pro to have an original like launcher?

Yes we can (according to users who have the phone and have tried to..)
Touchwizz
touchwizz with ics look for sgs2 port xxlph for galaxy s
It's funny how in the forums you always see people complaining about TW and yet the poll shows that it is favoured over sense.
Anyway, comparing the ICS roms and stock Samsung roms I've used, I do like many aspects of touchwiz, like the notifications controls and the custamizable app drawer.

[ATTN] Nexus 2.3.3 OTA is live

http://twitter.com/#!/googlenexus/status/40221838743179264
It's official!
OTA url. Do not flash this zip. It is for ROM cookers only.
http://android.clients.google.com/p...signed-passion-GRI40-from-FRG83G.81304b2d.zip
UPDATE
I've just noticed that this thread has been moved from the development section. For those who aren't aware of the significance of this update, it is useful to us Desire owners because it will allow us to use stock, AOSP based Gingerbread ROMs with improved stability, graphics performance and battery life. It will also also give ROM makers more straightforward access to camera hardware.
goodbye bootloops!!
Gingerbread (Android 2.3.3) update now rolling out to Nexus S and Nexus One. Be patient, may take a few weeks for OTA to complete.
this is news.
a good news. I can't wait to try it .
Great news, here we,HTC DesirE users can not wait to download via OTA now...
That's some great news, but since I read that HTC (pocketnow.com/android/gingerbread-coming-to-htc-desire-this-spring-or-summer) is waiting for the Desire S to come out first, we Desire users might have to wait quite a while before getting an official update!?
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Yes, that's true... if you have some sort of love affair with HTC Sense!
I've the new Sense (Froyo build) from RCMixHD on my Desire and have to say... it's okay but man is there a lot of HTC crap running on it!
Since most of us are running Cyanogenmod, Oxygen, etc... it's great news for us! We'll have a nice clean ROM in a matter of weeks (if not days). So I don't see how HTC dragging their feet matters at all. And just so you know, another reason they (HTC) might be slow to upgrade is because the new Desire S and Wildfire S models are coming, and they've changed so little on them that I'm sure they want to give users more (artificial) reasons to update. Thank god for our Rom Chefs!
I'm waiting for Sense personally, stock Android is fugly - even with different launchers. Only one remotely good is the MIUI launcher

Stock Android is ugly? Look at my Signature
In my opinion Sense is more beautiful than stock Android, but at least Gingerbread has a black bar instead of the hideous grey bar in 2.2 and also the icons are a bit nicer. Combine 2.3 with LauncherProPlus and a few other tweaks and it looks good. Altough what I really don't understand is why the stock dialer sucks so much. Unable to call a contact by pressing the first few letters of a name... Phones did that already at the turn of the millennium, maybe even before that. (Yes, I have DialerOne)
Really good news for all of us indeed!! Sense and clean Android followers will have our update, and all (our at least most of it) the issues will be fixed!!
Cheers for that!!

Hopefully it is possible to port the Desire S Android 2.3.x ROM to the old HTC Desire. I think this should work much better then the Desire HD port..

Subjective - personally the fat, dark (but not quite black) borders in Sense apps were something I was glad to see the back of.
In fact the aesthetics of Sense were a major motivation in ditching it (I stopped using the Sense launcher within a couple of days, well before rooting).
It's all a matter of taste - but at least we do have options

[Q] CM7 vrs Stock on the DHD

Hey guys,
So I'm getting a little impatient with waiting for Gingerbread on my DHD and was thinking of going to CM7 now that its Final. Previous Custom ROMS so far havn't really done it for me. I kinda like the reliablility and battery life etc of the stock build.
Has anyone tried CM7 on the DHD who could maybe give a little account of how it worked out (battery life etc)?
Thanks

Battery life is superb on CM7 and much better than the Gingerbread Sense ROMs. I take it you have tried the latest Desire S builds? I recommend RCMix if you haven't. If you are wanting the pure Google experience though, you have nothing to fear with CM7.
Regards.
Stock rom offers a better connection between all the social networks, better stock widgets and htc sense camera app. hmmm i did have CM7 for while and i loved it but its just the camera app that did it for me, i guess im just too used to HTC sense !
I had no problems with CM7 either. Very nice rom. Camera App is nice. Audio is great. Having or not having HTC Sense is a big decision maker. Once or if you get bored of Sense, then you will really enjoy a rom like CM7 for all its other differences. If it could have the Sense Weather animations and clock, Touch Input keyboard and HTC Reader 2.0 - it could be my ideal rom at this point.
Although I'm a relative noob with trying the many Android roms.

The clock, albeit not with the flip function, can be found all over the internet. Search for Fancy Widget (Sense Clock) to find it. If you can't and desperately need it, I will pm you the apk upon request, although will have to dig it out first. Keyboard? I'm confused as to exactly what you mean, but you can use the HTC keyboard on CM7 as well as numerous other replacements. HTC Reader??!! No way! Aldiko and Laputa both make HTC's attempt look poor. Not to mention Kindle.
Personally, the slight nuances of pure Android are what I find hard to resist. The transition animations, which were present on the Donut Sense UI but inexplicably left out since 2.1, are a big one. I know you can find ROMs which include the different animations or use Launcher Pro, but they never operate 100% and stutter/glitch at random moments. Even the way the keyboard bounces onto the screen rather than just "appearing" gives a more polished feel. The clean simple UI, which lacks the clutter and plethora of menu's that Sense incorporates is a dream to navigate, and the overall speed of the OS is unrivalled. I guess for the "average user", Sense is a comfortable, intuitive blanket which makes Android accessible for the masses. In the Windows Mobile days and arguably when Cupcake/Donut were still in use, it was a necessity. Since 2.1 however, I feel it is no longer needed as the Android UI has evolved to a point where it should appeal to anyone.
Regards.
EDIT: Just seen your website Grant! Forgive the app recommendations, I see you are already well versed in alternatives.
Thanks guys!!
Im still not sure! I wasn't the interface i was worried about! I've given the customs a whirl and its been more the reliability and performance that have brought me back to the stock ROM. I've downloaded the CM7 zip! might give it a chance over the weekend before the week starts over! Ill always have my back-up for when HTC decide to give us an official release of 2.3.3.
Maybe ill never go back once i try CM7!
cheers
if your a gameloft gamer, i suggest sticking with a sense 2.2 rom. if your a audiophile, cm7.
So using it now! Love the look and feel except I find that its a big sticky when swiping between homescreens. Any suggestions?

The Regina 3D Launcher is one I've only just heard of - thanks to Pocketnow.com.
For anyone who hasn't tried CyanogenMod 7 - there are some screenshots here.
I've only tried 3 Roms so far on Android. It would be nice to have an ongoing poll based on member's records or vote or something to see which ones are the most popular.

One thing I found missing is the ability to hide certain albums within the gallery. A nice feature when you've lots of crap on you SD card! Also having the GPS issue that seems pretty widespread.
Other than that, battery life = more awesome than Stock!

looks beautiful
only thing i will miss from sense is weather widget (the big ones and the small ones with clock) and calendar widget (android one is too ugly.)
I dont think I will switch from Sense to ICS as long as they dont improve the stock android email client (not gmail)...
It lacks even basic features such as selecting multiple emails for deleting/moving etc...
And in the ICS presentation, they only talked about the new gmail client... :/
Well they are obviously going to promote Gmail more since its a G app... but yeah, the stock Email app kinda sucks... We'll have to wait and see if they made any improvements in ICS... but I highly doubt it...
As for Sense dumping... Im all in! As soon as we get an ICS build for our pretty device, im aboard!
Im curious as to wether we can use our hw buttons and completely dismiss the on screen ones for more screen real estate... We can use the now obsolete Search button for multitasking...
First post updated.
Dont try to use the apps yet as they are compatible with ICS only!
SDK port is always made while the devs wait for source, so i'm waiting for someone to cook a ROM with the SDK and to try it.
The source probably come out with the Galaxy Nexus so we have to wait till the end of November, is a long month coming

In other words, my God man, calm down. Give our devs some time! ICS has only been here for about 16 seconds and a half.

Written by an android user?!........Well i guess that despite your signature, you did not think before buying your handset than. You should of gone and bought a wp7 or ios device and look at the same homescreen every day for years to come. For me this is brilliant. It's all that android is and all other systems are not. Clean, simple, fast, revolutionary yet very beautiful and it's probably customizable to the max.
I think Terepin had some serious brain washing.
Light years ahead? Can you be more exact and give some examples?

Off topic, but...

Does anyone else feel like it's like wrong to run other looks/UIs, like stock Android, or like TouchWiz look on an HTC device. Whenever I try to, I always restore back to sense as soon as I remember that it's an HTC device that's supposed to have sense. Maybe I'm just weird.

I don't want to start a Sense vs AOSP debate, but IMO Sense is really starting to feel like it's own OS. With each update it seems to feel less like an android. I may be biased because I hated it from the time I had the Eris. Sense was very laggy back then lol.

I really enjoyed sense 3.5, plus i love the power saving features. However, I don't like being stuck on one single UI. Its the only reason, why I would never buy an Iphone. Also, I prefer MIUI because i can change customizations as often as i want. Also, I'm thinking some of our dev's will have a complete ICS port way before HTC has a working Sense ICS version.

I thought I'd love Sense until I got the Inc2, and pretty much immediately disliked it. I didn't like the launcher - dedicating the entire bottom dock to phone, apps and customize buttons, to me, is just stupid, especially the customize button - once I get things set how I like it, why would I ever use that button again. I know it can be modded to be something else, but we're talking about stock Sense. Also, most of the widgets are useless to me - I don't use Facebook, Twitter or any other social network BS, and I don't schedule anything on a calendar. The e-mail and SMS widgets are OK, but would have been better if they were combined into a catch-all messaging widget like Pure Messenger.
So I ended up using ADW EX (which I had been using since my Fascinate). Went back and forth between CM7, Sense and MIUI for a while until I realized I don't care for the overall aesthetics of Sense, and CM7 is just a little too spartan. I don't like MIUI's lack of an app drawer, but I like how it looks/works otherwise, so I've been using MIUI with ADW EX and it suites me just fine. Never once thought that, being an HTC phone, it HAD to run Sense.
Just my 2 cents.

I feel like you're spot on. I feel like that is the beauty of Android, we have so many choices, and no one can tell you what you have to run or what has to be done with your looks. I used to love MIUI, but for some reason I restored to it today after being on sense for a while, and it just didn't do it for me. I'm kinda curious about lefty's cm7.2 kang build. I love this phone and how many choices there are and how diverse we have it here. To each there own, I love sense, but I also love AOSP. I love Android. Haha

I just came to the DInc2 from OG D1, and I've actually really taken to the Sense UI. To me, coming from custom froyo then GB Roms, then a few HC and ICS themed Roms, the Sense feels so much more polished and intuitive.
I'm running Skyraider with dres' OC kernel, but even stock didn't seem laggy, just crazy bloated.

There are a lot of Sense features I like, but the only thing I end up using really is the Ring-Pull and shortcut Sense lockscreen. Dedicating valuable screen space is not cool, especially with how little you can change it (skins only for stock). I think HTC does a good job with it, it just isn't for me. I'm liking ADW ex right now on rls1.1, but I'm just biding my time for MIUI to put out their ICS build like I'm sure a lot of people are.

Have you tried the CM7 "rings" lockscreen? It gives you the option to put any app shortcuts on the screen.

I haven't. Operation is smooth? And I assume these can be used with MIUI?
And lastly, where do I find these?
