What do you mean by two address books? You refer to contacts in dialer.apk and people.apk?

The phone application only lists your favorites and recent calls. (or your contacts with phone numbers if you don't have recent calls/favorites)
The people application lists your entire phonebook.
So it's not two address books.
They've always had this in all generations of Android.
Phone.apk and Contacts.apk -- nothing new, except now its a little bit more noticeable.

Contacts.apk is the People app, AND is the dialer.

one is from the SIM card
the other one is from your Google account
if you have additional Google accounts, you will see even more address book
if you have facebook installed, you will see yet another address book from facebook
if you have Yahoo mail/messenger installed, you will see yet another address book from yahoo
if you have Twitter installed, you will see yet another address book from Twitter
if you have Lnked In installed you will see... anyways you get the point, right?

Yes because I don't understand the difference between the two apps.
If both apps has all my contacts, why have two different apps?

They are shared contacts, not too different copies. So it's not two lists, just the same list viewed from different places.

In this case I don't see the usefulness of having two apps with the same list.
They are confusing and it seems a bad merge from gingerbred and honeycomb.
the people app is new and google is trying out something different i guess. the contacts app is the same as its always been on android. the people app i think is designed to try to merge all the social sites data together into each of your contacts etc. just ignore it if you dont use people or social.
I fully agree and understand,
My Dialer has a nice black smooth feel then my People has this ugly white look...
I use people because i have the button on my screen but then when i'm making calls i use the dialer and for a second or so it confuses me because of the different layout and style...
I think this is what he is trying to get at is why both of them why not just link people to the dial contacts instead of having a hole separate program...

Because the phone application is for calling people. It's the reason it only shows contacts with phone numbers, and when you tap on the favorites it automatically calls them. (phone call functions)
The people application is for information about people. When you tap the people it opens up the details of the people (email/chat/social/address/etc).
They have always been to seperate apps. phone.apk and contacts.apk.
The only difference now is that they debundled them appropriately.

actually it's not the same app. its two activities with different backgrounds, layouts, etc. they just contain similar information is all (i.e. your phone numbers).
contacts is the standard black background we've known for years.
people is white, totally different settings, etc.

Yes, I'm using CM7, but I recall this happening when I was on CM6. Whenever I want to share an image, I get a list of apps that's longer than the window, and I cannot scroll with the trackpad or my finger.
i don't know but if you have that many options to share a picture,i guess you just need to scroll the list with your fingers?

ok my bad..ima let an expert answer this one but remember cm7 is still in beta so expect bugs like this one.
no worries, thx for trying tho. it's not a huge problem, just something i noticed and is sorta annoying when there's an app i want to use that isn't accessible from that list...

Yeah I didn't see that the first time, sorry. I think it's a gallery bug, it has been since google released that 3D gallery. Mine doesn't truncate like that in portrait mode. Do you need that many sharing applications?

i don't need that many, they just show up there - if there was a way to limit it, i would be inclined to do so, i only need like 5 of them
Well I just see a bunch of extra stuff there, like k-9 mail and picasa and goggles and a bunch of other stuff. I guess that I just don't have that stuff installed, that's why my list is shorter. You can't remove those items from the list without uninstalling the app. Is there anything that's being cut off that you frequently use?

Yeah there's not much you can do about the list, maybe google will fix it, or cyanogen will patch it, who knows.
I found it hard to believe after I got all my gmail contacts and google + contacts on GN...I got multiple entries of the same person. In HTC sense or tough wiz they usually automatically suggest you to links up those entries. But I look and look though all the options in ICS contact apps, didnt see it. Did google seriously forgot about it?
and none of the facebook contacts show up at all...probably not compatible with ICS yet?
No more Facebook integration after gingerbread.
U can use SyncMyPix. I know it's frustrating but I think this is the best solution available so far

You can link contacts together, but only manual and difficult.
Open contacts, then open person which you would like to link to another, then from top-right menu click "edit". Then click the same menu button again, there is option "join". It's the only way I found to combine contacts together.....

Ive tried this because ive wondered about linking contacts since my XOOM updated to ICS and once you click Join, on the top of the list is a Suggested contact, meaning the same name so its kind of easy to do if you know the multiples.
Most of mine linked automatically if they have the same name on my phone as they do on Facebook. Those that don't I joined manually
Haxsync on Android marker ... syncs pictures with face detection high quality ...and adds them to people automatically including recent posts ... well worth the money

Every phone ive ever had including the galaxy s2 when you clicked in the to box it would bring uo your contact list letting you choose the contact.
Matt
You can also go to the contact list and choose to text
Go to Phone Icon > People tab, then click on the left box where their photo is.
Then on the right side of the phone number is an icon i can't describe, but that lets you text.
yeah many phones do that
But i would always search in the list anyway so for me this is a step less

The numbers you called most often were put in this category, and you couldn't clear the list if you want. Say you have a 1-900 phone sex issue you wanted to hide from your GF or wife, you'd need to wipe your whole phone to get rid of it
Now you can just clear it - just like a web browsers history.

Oh, of course, "frequent calls" confused me a bit, I don't know why.
Awesome. My list has a bunch of obnoxious clients on it, so that'll be nice.
Does anyone know if Facebook contact integration is actually fixed? High res profile photos are a go, yes?

I am not sure if it is, but it is Facebook's responsibility to get sync working. Google provided a way for them to make it happen, but they need to make it work with their application.

Hi there!
Yesterday I received OTA update to 4.3 and discovered that Google Talk app was replaced by Hangouts. The latter is terribly bad app and I'd like to remove Hangouts and install Gtalk. Does anyone know how to restore Google Talk?
I'm tired of people saying that its "terribly bad"—you get text copying, images, emoji, simple group chats and read receipts with live notifications as to when people are writing. Its fantastic as to functionality—the only thing you lost is the ability to set a status. And perhaps one or two smaller features.
However, I don't want to sound just annoying, so is there any way in the built-in settings app to use uninstall updates after a system update such as this one? Considering you had Talk before, I'm assuming (and hoping) that it didn't overwrite the section that stores previously installed versions of that app.

Unfortunately I'm assuming that Google overwrite Talk with Hangouts. When you trying to uninstall hangouts you always go to ver. 1.0.2, not to GTalk.
You can't uninstall because the default is Hangouts. You can get a Talk.apk from older Google image and push it to system/app & remove Hangouts apk.

Yeah, probably, since the assert script would check for Hangouts.apk to be patched. But if you know how to copy stuff to system , you also know how to revert the change

So without messing in system/app there is no way to restore Gtalk in 'normal' way?
No, because it doesn't exist in 4.3 system partition so you can't revert to it like before and it can't be installed as a regular app. Sooner you get used to Hangouts, the better

Yeah, I'm going to have to agree here. The sooner you get used to Hangouts, the better! Apparently they're adding screen-share soon, which was shown off at the Google event announcing ChromeCast and the New Nexus 7 (which seems awesome, by the way).

You are right, it's not terribly bad, it's "a piece of garbage".
It shows contacts from my SIM card. I keep said contacts hidden in the contacts App, yet Hangouts does't care (I am not going to have an hangout with my voicemail or with my operators's customer service).
It shows circles, but you cannot expand them. Do you remember who is in your circle of acquaintances? I don't.
It shows contacts only by name and you cannot expand them
Some of the contacts appear with the same name multiple times, maybe because they have more that one email address or because they are imported from different apps and there is no way to tell them apart.
Hangout tells you if a contact does not have access to hangouts and offers the possibility of inviting him/her (good). However you cannot hide said contact from the list or only show the ones that have hangouts
It doesn't show when contacts are online
So it is very understandable that people want to revert back to something that was working better at sending and receiving messages.
Yeah, you can do everything but see who's online you can IM with!! /sarcasm
