REQUEST: Restoring Google Talk in 4.3 - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hi there!
Yesterday I received OTA update to 4.3 and discovered that Google Talk app was replaced by Hangouts. The latter is terribly bad app and I'd like to remove Hangouts and install Gtalk. Does anyone know how to restore Google Talk?

I'm tired of people saying that its "terribly bad"—you get text copying, images, emoji, simple group chats and read receipts with live notifications as to when people are writing. Its fantastic as to functionality—the only thing you lost is the ability to set a status. And perhaps one or two smaller features.
However, I don't want to sound just annoying, so is there any way in the built-in settings app to use uninstall updates after a system update such as this one? Considering you had Talk before, I'm assuming (and hoping) that it didn't overwrite the section that stores previously installed versions of that app.

Unfortunately I'm assuming that Google overwrite Talk with Hangouts. When you trying to uninstall hangouts you always go to ver. 1.0.2, not to GTalk.

You can't uninstall because the default is Hangouts. You can get a Talk.apk from older Google image and push it to system/app & remove Hangouts apk.

I'm using stock rom/kernel.
Tell me if I'm wrong but when I try to remove Hangouts and replace it with Gtalk in system/app I will loose ability to receive OTA?

Yeah, probably, since the assert script would check for Hangouts.apk to be patched. But if you know how to copy stuff to system , you also know how to revert the change

So without messing in system/app there is no way to restore Gtalk in 'normal' way?

No, because it doesn't exist in 4.3 system partition so you can't revert to it like before and it can't be installed as a regular app. Sooner you get used to Hangouts, the better

Yeah, I'm going to have to agree here. The sooner you get used to Hangouts, the better! Apparently they're adding screen-share soon, which was shown off at the Google event announcing ChromeCast and the New Nexus 7 (which seems awesome, by the way).

You are right, it's not terribly bad, it's "a piece of garbage".
It shows contacts from my SIM card. I keep said contacts hidden in the contacts App, yet Hangouts does't care (I am not going to have an hangout with my voicemail or with my operators's customer service).
It shows circles, but you cannot expand them. Do you remember who is in your circle of acquaintances? I don't.
It shows contacts only by name and you cannot expand them
Some of the contacts appear with the same name multiple times, maybe because they have more that one email address or because they are imported from different apps and there is no way to tell them apart.
Hangout tells you if a contact does not have access to hangouts and offers the possibility of inviting him/her (good). However you cannot hide said contact from the list or only show the ones that have hangouts
It doesn't show when contacts are online
So it is very understandable that people want to revert back to something that was working better at sending and receiving messages.

Yeah, you can do everything but see who's online you can IM with!! /sarcasm

[Q] Sense synced Facebook contacts despite me asking nicely not to :/

I may flash a custom Gingerbread ROM a few months down the road but I'm staying stock until the hardware checks out. The only thing I don't like about Sense is it's gone and added a ton of Facebook friends with phone numbers to my contact list and I really don't want them. Is there a way to remove them? I can't seem to find a simple solution.
Thanks in advance.

I just double checked, contacts aren't being synced for Android Facebook or Sense Facebook. When I go into the contacts app (I think it's called People) I have set my 70 contacts from Facebook for Sense to not be viewed, but they still appear in the list of people to call or send messages to. I don't care if they're there, but at the least I don't want to see them. I have them hidden in contacts but they appear in Handcent and Phone anyway.
Did you ever in the past link up FB contacts to an android phone? In that case I believe it also syncs up with Google's contacts in the cloud...but I may be mistaken
Yeah this got posted a while back, I know what you mean it's annoying. It meant my phone tried to sync a ton of stuff I didn't want to my car stereo unit via Bluetooth.
Someone did post up a solution, try a search for Facebook and contacts.

Google Facebook Photo Sync

This is a little off-topic, and I'm sorry if it doesn't belong here, but I am looking for some people to test out a new website I've been working on, and thought I'd look to my fellow Inc2 owners.
When I first got CM7 working on my old Fascinate, I was a little bummed that there was no way to link my Facebook contacts. So I decided to make my own tool. As of right now, it only syncs pictures, no phone numbers or anything.
I've spent a good amount of time working out the bugs, but there is a chance I missed some, so if you encounter any problems please let me know. Don't worry though, it won't mess up your Google contacts at all.
Please note that it currently DOES NOT work in Internet Explorer, due to a bug on Google's end which will hopefully be fixed soon.
http://www.pfrybarger.com/googlefbsync/googlefbsync.html
Thanks!
Edit: Also I should note that this won't work on mobile browsers (can't scroll through certain lists), and you must have javascript enabled in your browser.
What are the benefits over using the Facebook App to sync contacts?
Sent from my ADR6350 using XDA Premium App
Let's see, the main benefits are:
- Ability to crop and resize profile pictures
- Pictures are visible outside of just your phone, so in Gmail for instance
- No need to re-link after flashing a new rom (I always found this a pain)
- Pictures will show up everywhere on your phone. I believe if you use the Facebook app to sync, the pictures will not show up for certain apps, like messaging
- No new contacts will be added to your phone
My tool will only sync pictures, and not phone numbers or email addresses. I found it kind of annoying that the Facebook app would pull these in, but I guess that's a matter of personal preference.
As of right now, there is no automatic updating of profile pictures, but I hope to get this implemented soon.

Gave it a go. after running the program, I got an error pop up that submitted an error report. The program still worked though. It found a few of my contacts in Google that weren't matched up with my Facebook contacts.
So if I'm understanding this, now that I have my Facebook contacts linked with my Google contacts, when loading my contacts on my phone now, (after flashing a rom or doing a hard reset) my Google contacts will still have the pictures linked to them without having to go back and doing the Facebook thing all over again?

Yep, as long as you hit the upload button once you were done linking the contacts. Instead of saving the pictures on the phone, like the Facebook app does, this actually saves the pictures to your Google contacts. So when you do a reset, and sign back in to your Google account, your contact picture will be sent to your phone along with all their other information.
You do need to link all of your contacts on the website though. It doesn't recognize which ones you already have linked on your phone.
I saw the bug reports, I'll take a look and try to see what happened. Thanks for giving it a try!
Could you add the feature of ONLY syncing facebook pictures and no contact numbers? The one thing I hate about syncing facebook in my phone is the fact some people have old numbers still on FB so there are two numbers when you go to call or text someone as well as there are unwanted numbers of people.

This will help me diagnose what's going on, and why your contacts aren't showing up. Thanks!

Shoot, my server must be down. I'll take a look at it when I get some time today, sorry about that.
Alright it should be up and running now. Let me know if you have any problems. Thanks!

[Q] Dialer not searching ??

Just got myself a GN and I was a bit disappointed with the dialer.
With my old phone I could just spelling the name of a contact and the dialer would list contacts.
GN just puts in the numbers no direct search ??
Is it some option or something I am missing or do I need another dialer??
Love the feel of it just wish I did not have to go to contacts to find a number...
The stock dialer does not support T9 Smart dial. Either use another dialer, or use the google search bar to search for the contact you want to call.
Or spend a minute amount effort and tap the search icon in the bottom left of the dialer then start typing the name. It's not really much time wasted...
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
I also wish the T9 dialer was built into stock Android as it is with HTC Sense, Touchwiz and MIUI.
If you would like Google to change this, star the following threads in the Android issue tracker:
http://code.google.com/p/android/is...t9&colspec=ID Type Status Owner Summary Stars
http://code.google.com/p/android/is...t9&colspec=ID Type Status Owner Summary Stars
http://code.google.com/p/android/is...t9&colspec=ID Type Status Owner Summary Stars
While it may not be much more effort, it is quite clear that this feature is available in other stock dialers, then why not in google's own?
I also store my contacts on the sim card and if anyone has noticed, then you cannot import all contacts into phone at once. You have to manually go through all contacts which again is a sore point.
I think that is a valid point to expect in the dialer, not whether searching seperately is an option or not!

Why not synchronise your contacts with google, so if you:
1. lose your phone.
2. Phone gets broken
3. Somebody steals it
it only takes 2 minutes before you have all your contacts again.
There are a lot of Contacts apps around on the market, and i bet even 1 of them supports transferring your sim contacts to the phone.
Earlier i used GO Contacts, but they don't support ICS yet. So for now im using DW Contacts (looks ok, only used it for an hour though).

Yes and accepted, but that behaviour has been standard all along. Rather than make me select one contact at a time from my hundred contacts, that one simple click would have been better. Anyways I prefer not to upload contacts into the cloud because
1. I may not have the consent of some of the ppl that I hold details for, e.g. bosses and they may not prefer it and
2. I personally do not know who or how this data is used/accessed in which case I would rather not. And personally judging by Google's appetite for gathering our personal data, I would rather opt out. Its just me....
Sorry OP to have hijacked your thread..
Correction - User error Apologies, I have just read the manual and it does allow for an 'import all' option to copy all contacts from SIM to phone.
To bad wish they would put that in its a very nice feature I seen no reason to be left out.
Anyone know a good dialer to use instead ?? Would love one with the same look if possible ???
Perhaps it is some sort of lawsuit infringement that prohibits them to build it into the dialer. I don't think Apple has this either, right? Maybe Microsoft has the patent on it.
3rd party dialers have this feature. In fact, I just install the MIUI dialer because it is just awesome. It is in the market and not listed under "MIUI Dialer" but "e9" or something. It works great.

I know from gingerbread that 3rd party apps can't clear unanswered calls. Some if the apps solves that by using the stock dialer list when selecting the notification.
Anyway its limitations in the OS and not the apps.

Anyone know if SMS is part of it? Seems silly for it not to be, but doesn't look like it's part of it. So not actually unified messaging yet.

Just installed it, and people's numbers are listed. What happens if I send a message to one? Bearing in mind that Google Voice doesn't yet exist in the UK!
Really does seem like an huge gap. They talked about getting technology out of the way so you can get on with communication, but I still have two apps to send messages and pictures to other people!

It verified my # first?. But didnt migrate my sms list and the hangout message I sent didnt show in sms. I agree it would be cool if that was a feature, maybe in the future.
Didnt want to make a new thread for this but since we are talking about apps and stuff announced at Google I/O. New updates for Google Play music and Google search are in the play store. Google Play Music looks COMPLETELY different.
It tried to verify my number, but I think that's a WhatsApp style link for others to find you.
However, my SIM reports my number as something else entirely because I ported a number over. So it couldn't verify me. Trying to talk to my network now, they're not answering...

This is transitioning Talk into Hangouts so it may take a little time for everything to line up. At first I was being directed to "Hangouts (replaces Talk)" that just said "open" on my device, and it looked like Talk. But then, after a dozen impatient refreshes, "open" changed to "update". Now Talk is labeled Hangout and has the new UI, but the icon is still Talk. Messages I am sending in Hangout on my phone are appearing in Talk in gmail on my comp right now.

If you are using a ROM where Talk is one of the system apps, you may need to uninstall it. I used Titanium Backup to uninstall it and then downloaded Hangouts from the Play Store.

If I'm understanding you right, you're trying to access Hangouts via the Gmail web interface. The Chrome Hangouts plugin does NOT replace the Talk box in Gmail. It adds an extra app, which is accessed by clicking the Hangouts icon on your Chrome toolbar.
The Gmail web interface will be rolled out later and will be upgraded from within Gmail itself.

OP3 after 5 days, struggling to get on track

Using the OP3 for 5 days now and still struggling a lot . Somehow I got the message about no space on the storage although there were not many files there. So had to do a reset, and reinstalled all apps a fresh.
I am horribly addicted to the DND , Block Caller , Memo and Email Client of Samsung. I assumed that the OP3 being a Android phone, would have all of these and more.
I have installed a app (Do not Disturb) for the DND which seems to be working fine. Can someone suggest a workaround for the other three problems, i.e Block Caller, Memo (where I can import samsung memos) and email client like Samsung, please.
I would like to keep the phone and am making all efforts to work towards that. All advice will be highly appreciated.
A stupid question, would all these problems be overcome with a downgrade to Marshamallow, if that is possible at all ?
- use google keep for memo (its better)
- tons of options for email, you can use Gmail for starters (even for Microsoft Exchange), or check out BlueMail if you want to try a third party.
if you're trying to get these on stock OOS with no root/xposed:
- create a contact called SPAM and add callers you want to block to that, then make that contact's calls all go to voicemail
if you're willing to unlock BL & root:
- Flash Google Dialer w/ framework to block callers
- use Root Call Blocker

Thanks for your reply. Gmail does not go to the Combined view of Inbox directly, dislike that. Needed a simple client which is included with the phone. Have tried BlueMail found it very complicated. I dont mind rooting if I can get a permanent solution to my problems.
About Truecaller or any other Dialler which uploads the phone book, is a huge issue for me and I dont want to do that.
About Google Keep, have tried that. Didnt like it. Besides I have hundreds of notes on my Samsung Memo with Titanium backups available, all lost.

You are issues rare, it also tells how diverse this world is. Most people here, specially me, just hate Samsung UI, missing frame rates and lags, chinese looking touchwiz. Good to know, some people prefer it as well. I exchanged galaxy S7 for OP3 with commitment never to buy Samsung again, i feel you have opposite issues
There are tones of memo applications, oneNote it's working fine and also you can sync with the widows os, using a branded application such Samsung's crap which you can't ported to other devices it's risky, Samsung like Apple are pushing us to use their own ****, less flexibility

You should try HydrogenOS v0.10 which comes with its own notes app and you can block or record calls directly from the phone app. For email, I myself use Inbox from Google which works great but try few from PlayStore.

Why did you buy OP3 instead of Samsung?
I mean, if you prefer Samsung stile why did you change it for a pure android one?
Anyway, I'm looking for an OP3. If you would like to sell it to buy a Samsung device I would like to help you.

Thanks for your reply. Yes I have had Onenote since ages on my phones, never thought of using it as a memo pad. Infact it is a very good suggestion, the Quick notes are really handly and get synced to all devices too.

For memo i would suggest google keep or colornote, for mail you can try outlook, for call blocking you can try call blocker by nq mobile security it works good for me.
And if you root it to some other custom rom like resurrection rom i think there is an inbult feature of call blocking..

Your first mistake is thinking that Samsung ships Android. They ship TouchWiz and add a bunch of "value added" crap most people don't care about. Most if not all of those things can be found on Google Play.
