Best Recommended Rom/Kernel For The Epic 4G Touch? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I have rooted phones in the past and loved it. Looking to root my new galaxy s2 epic 4g touch for sprint. Would like to get the best and easiest instructions as well as the best rom/kernel combination. Would like something that is stable and doesn't have too many bugs. Please help yall! If you got to send me a link, that's fine. Just so many posts on here don't know where to start lol

Best rom, by far is strongsteves odexed. Chris's EL26kernel is baked in: (I have 2 E4GT's. One is always running strongsteve)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1323763

Use sfhubs one touch root (look in the devs section). This will get you up and rooted, then choose option c to install a custom recovery. As far as a ROM solution, I am going to have to respectfully disagree with the previous post. Calk's e4gt ROM, ver 2.8.1. Seems to be the most stable and popular ROM around here. That is where I would start.

I second that. I prefer calk's with the desperado kernel.

I will have to respectfully disagree with the last two posts. This isn't a popularity contest, it's about the most reliable rom. Have either of you tried strongsteves? I'm running calks latest on my 2nd E4GT. Odex plainly runs smoother without any tweaks. The battery life is far better as well. Don't take what I'm saying the wrong way. I like calks and always have. That being said, strongsteve is just all around a better rom

+1 on Blazer.
3.8 should be out today.

Everyone will have a different opinion on roms etc, so I'll try to just state facts.
Calk's rom is very nice. In fact a lot of roms are created using his as a base. That speaks for itself. He's also very responsive, concise, and very well respected.
The same can be said about PhantomHacker's roms. He has his own Starburst rom - very oem'ish, one of the first custom roms out (but I think Unnamed has taken the lead in this category) and also the Blazer series roms (based off of Calks rom too)
Again, he's very responsive, well respected, and writes well.
That being said, there are many other Super custom roms, with crazy fonts, icons, etc. Too crazy for myself.
StrongSteve's rom should be solid too.
Bottom line, make a backup of something solid, and try out anything you find appealing. Check out the screenshots in the OP for many of them. Don't be scared. Ask Questions- but read the threads first. If you just don't like one, go back to the backup I was talking about.
Welcome buddy!!!! Have fun and be nice to everyone. (not that you weren't)

I've tried a few different ROMS but Blazer has been solid for me and my use..and I understand with the newest update the battery is suppose to be better but you should try them out and see what works for you and your use of the phone.

What do you mean it is not cwm recovery? Then what is it?
Listen, get the autoroot kit, follow instructions and choose option c and then option e. You should now have ek02 rom/kernel with cwm. Then reboot into cwm recovery by holding the volume up button and the power button at the same time. From there, flash whatever rom you want.

I'm on EL29 and it didn't work, my phone never connected with the auto root, I tried it several times. The only option for EL29 is L or M and I tried L with the latest auto root and it said it would connect, so I tried the other and that at least got me to the other screen, but it never connected

While there has been progress in the new ek02 rom's, including the android 2.3.6 update, I would suggest phantomhackers blazer rom, its fast and stable and very good on battery. Good start while the new 2.3.6 rom's get updated

I really like Calkulin's ROM. It's close to stock, which to me is an advantage, but includes some sensible additions. The latest version is based on the most recent leaked update and includes a modified kernal with a ClockWorkMod-based recovery.
I'd recommend new users check out qbking77's videos in this thread. They were a great help to me when getting started.

The "AOS bug" is not ROM related. Read the forums here for an answer to what it is and how to "fix" it.
As far as the "best" ROM it's all subjective but I would go for Calk's 2.0. The man knows what he is doing.
I have always used stock kernel and stock rooted ROM for this phone. This had been the best user experience I have had in an Android. I am so happy with battery life I don't want to change.

Are there any ROMs that actually work

Are there any stable e4gt roms that are better than stock ek02 with everything working cuz battery life is a poor trade off for working features in my opinion. Example if wimax is not working or tether to get more battery life whats the point

I am also not sure how to approach this. There are only a few roms that don't support wimax.. I suggest calkulins. It's my go to rom. I've heard starburst is pretty good too.. But in the future, please try to read a bit. maybe look at the roms that have a lot of view and/or comments. The OP of each thread will tell you just about everything you need to know.
IMO, there is no more stable custom ROM right now then UnNamed. If I wasn't so flash happy, I would stay with that but I'm changing ROMs every 2-3 days now...
But anyway, yeah UnNamed is the best ROM as far as stability is concerned.
Oh and I got over a day of moderate use from it. Don't believe me though, try it out!

I've been extremely pleased with Calkulin's ROM. I have tried unnamed (which I also like) but I prefer the 5 icon dock and 5x5 app drawer and undervolt/underclock scripts in Calkulin's.

MJHawaii is right.. UnNamed is a hell of a rom especially with a few tweaks added in. I am quite sure you will not find anyone unhappy with it. Also like mentioned before there is a whole development section of great roms. Just make sure when you try them all you do not restore data and flash all of them cleanly and not on top of each other.
For battery life on this phone may I recommend 200-800 since your phone can clearly handle it...
no offence, but either dont flash and stay on stock or there is always the good ol flip phones!

Got to agree with the previous poster that suggested you just stay on stock. I'd prefer not having to see posts/threads like this in the future....

blazer is my daily driver.
i have not tried a single rom that has just flat out been unstable or unusable though; i steer clear of early/experimental builds, bust most of the roms in the dev section for this phone are pretty complete and comprehensive.
this is my first android device and initially i had trouble just rooting the thing, but thanks to xda's dev section my first flash was a piece of cake and i've had no issues or major complaints in 3 months of jumping rom to rom.
Just an observation. But your avatar shows you have at&t, shouldn't you be in a different section? This forum is for the Samsung epic 4g touch. Maybe thats why the roms aren't working. Unless you just havent updated your profile. (Im guilty of that as well)

[Q] FF18 ICS back to GB

I've been running the FF18 ICS leak for weeks now. I used SFHUBs one click method. My battery life hasn't been the best so was thinking about just going back to stock GB with root. I've read about using the EL26 one click. Is this the best method or is EL29 okay? I was considering taking my phone into Sprint for a replacement due to my battery life not being the best even when I was on GB. Thanks for your time.
EL29 one click. EL26 is the kernel people go back to for flashing ics roms or flashing from ics to gb. Full odin flashes are safe regardless you will be overwriting everything, this is unlike flashing from cwm in this instance.
Thanks Rain.

Typically Its safe to go to EL26 and then back upto EL29 if thats what you want.
Dont know if you are rooted or not, there are couple tweaked EL29 ROMs out there that have the best battery and performance.
I hear you, that thought has crossed my mind as I have tried several FF18 custom ROMs. I am now on Universe FF18 ROM and I am really happy with it. Just my two cents.
I left ICS f for the same reason. I use the EL29 with clockwork auto boot tar in mobile Odin. Works well. you right into recovery to flash GB or ICS. EL26 seems to be the method most use

If your using desktop ODIN you can go straight to EL29. There is zero point to going to an earlier version if all your going to do is flash EL29 anyways. However without a desktop present that is of course not an option.
You should use EL26 if your going back to GB without ODIN. As always if your going to another ICS rom you should use EL26 CWM or a safe ics kernel when available.
Full ODIN tars can be applied over any version safely. Pre rooted one clicks are included just be sure to use the full version never do a no data going backwards, but if u do just factory reset (of on gingerbread).

I dont get how you all are having issues with ICS Ive used ROMs from Venum, and other members of Team Venum. Using Dazed's Wicked Sensation 1.5 now. Great battery life, plenty fast for me. I did change the Kernel and modem to FF02 though. seems to work best for my phone. Ive used Blend, Blu Kuban, Anakonda, Boa, ICE, AOKP, CM9, Frankenstein's ego. Never had an issue with any of them. Well... except for not flashing AOKP right a couple times. Got it figured out fairly quickly Even running Placebo tweaks and havent had issues at all. One thing or another may not work on one ROM or another. but always found a work around for them. Im just learning all this stuff though. Havent really gotten in to the meat an potatos of it all yet. But Im learning.
Anyways... long answer just to say I Love ICS. Cant wait to try Jellybean.

[Q] Recommendations for updating my Epic 4G

Hi All,
I'm looking to update my phone with a new ROM/OS. I've rooted before and believe I currently have a MIDNIGHT ROM loaded (see attached phone screen-shot). I see references to CM9 and CM10, ICS/JB. I think i know the processes, ODIN, etc.... I'd just like to be pointed to the most stable, current files.
Thanks in advance.
If you want the most stable and best for the Epic 4G and coming from Midnight you may want to stick with one of the FC09 Toichwiz ROMs. If you are more adventurous and don't mind an AOSP ROM then CM9 is Ice Cream Sandwich for this phone. There are still a few bugs in CM10 and the Jellybean variants.

TPR is a great stable ROM. Great battery life, all the toggles, smoothness tweaks, etc. I went to it after CleanGB and even gave the included Zeam Launcher a whirl. Try it out. You won't be disappointed. I got the flashing bug after a couple months and have tried AOKP M6, CM9, then went back to TPR. Now I've gone to CM10, but may yet go back to TPR for the stability and great battery life.

Great ROM (only flashed it last night), very responsive, i love the theme and Toggles! Great job Kenny. I did not Odin or flash the FC09 modem, what am I missing?
Thanks

Thank you my friend. Which modem are you running? There are different schools of thought on modems. I always just go with latest official after the problems with the leaked modems. But whatever gives you beat speed and signal for you.

Frankly, I can't say for sure if FC09 is any better than earlier versions, but I have always had good luck running the latest official released modem. If you're comfortable using Odin, changing modems is easy and not particularly risky. There are CWM flashable versions of the modems, but that involves flashing a modded kernel, flashing the modem, then reflashing your intended kernel. To be honest, I think Odin is safer and simpler for modems.

OK Guys,
I'm really really pleased with the TPR for my EPIC 4G (thanks kenny), now I need a recommendation for my wife's HTC EVO 4G (Sprint also).
Thanks in advance.

Synergy roms are really good for the evo.... my wife is loving cm7 on her evo... super stable and great battery life... perfect for the wife...
based on the screenshot your still on an old modem, which u might want to keep or might want to change....
im on fc09 which is the 2nd latest and i believe to be the most popular, however there is a new modem (fc19)
aokp milestone 6 seems pretty stable, i have a good experience with it......

FC09 is the latest. FC19 is a leak that never was released.

Sooooooo.........
Can I use TPR on the EVO, if so it's a no brainer.
I switched to the fc09 modem, did not detect any significant change in performance.
