Getting my Epic tomorrow need help choosing rom! - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Im getting my epic tomorrow and i need help, which roms do you guys think are the best for the epic 4g touch? or kernels or any other mods please leave your suggestions and opinions.

While there has been progress in the new ek02 rom's, including the android 2.3.6 update, I would suggest phantomhackers blazer rom, its fast and stable and very good on battery. Good start while the new 2.3.6 rom's get updated

I just got my e4gt last week and am running caulkins rom and its been really great. Everything working. Excellent battery life. Ics themes developed for it. I love it. Just my two cents though.

I really like Calkulin's ROM. It's close to stock, which to me is an advantage, but includes some sensible additions. The latest version is based on the most recent leaked update and includes a modified kernal with a ClockWorkMod-based recovery.
I'd recommend new users check out qbking77's videos in this thread. They were a great help to me when getting started.

The "AOS bug" is not ROM related. Read the forums here for an answer to what it is and how to "fix" it.
As far as the "best" ROM it's all subjective but I would go for Calk's 2.0. The man knows what he is doing.

I have always used stock kernel and stock rooted ROM for this phone. This had been the best user experience I have had in an Android. I am so happy with battery life I don't want to change.

Are there any ROMs that actually work

Are there any stable e4gt roms that are better than stock ek02 with everything working cuz battery life is a poor trade off for working features in my opinion. Example if wimax is not working or tether to get more battery life whats the point

I am also not sure how to approach this. There are only a few roms that don't support wimax.. I suggest calkulins. It's my go to rom. I've heard starburst is pretty good too.. But in the future, please try to read a bit. maybe look at the roms that have a lot of view and/or comments. The OP of each thread will tell you just about everything you need to know.
IMO, there is no more stable custom ROM right now then UnNamed. If I wasn't so flash happy, I would stay with that but I'm changing ROMs every 2-3 days now...
But anyway, yeah UnNamed is the best ROM as far as stability is concerned.
Oh and I got over a day of moderate use from it. Don't believe me though, try it out!
Have not tried unamed yet

+1 for Calkulin's roms. Good battery life, stable, so far I have not encountered any issues.
I've been extremely pleased with Calkulin's ROM. I have tried unnamed (which I also like) but I prefer the 5 icon dock and 5x5 app drawer and undervolt/underclock scripts in Calkulin's.
No, none of them actually work...stay on stock...

MJHawaii is right.. UnNamed is a hell of a rom especially with a few tweaks added in. I am quite sure you will not find anyone unhappy with it. Also like mentioned before there is a whole development section of great roms. Just make sure when you try them all you do not restore data and flash all of them cleanly and not on top of each other.
For battery life on this phone may I recommend 200-800 since your phone can clearly handle it...
no offence, but either dont flash and stay on stock or there is always the good ol flip phones!

All the ROMS that are built on TW source are complete - this excludes CM7 and MIUI which are AOSP. REALLY.

Got to agree with the previous poster that suggested you just stay on stock. I'd prefer not having to see posts/threads like this in the future....
For the record however, I've been happy with Calk's, Unnamed AND for quite a bit of time now (a whole month or so!) Blend is my current Daily and it is brilliant.

blazer is my daily driver.
i have not tried a single rom that has just flat out been unstable or unusable though; i steer clear of early/experimental builds, bust most of the roms in the dev section for this phone are pretty complete and comprehensive.
this is my first android device and initially i had trouble just rooting the thing, but thanks to xda's dev section my first flash was a piece of cake and i've had no issues or major complaints in 3 months of jumping rom to rom.
Just an observation. But your avatar shows you have at&t, shouldn't you be in a different section? This forum is for the Samsung epic 4g touch. Maybe thats why the roms aren't working. Unless you just havent updated your profile. (Im guilty of that as well)

About to ROOT my Epic 4g...suggest ROM's/Themes

It is gingerbread EL30

To be honest, all the ROMs out for our phone are pretty darn good. I think the first thing you need to ask yourself is if you want to keep touchwiz features, or go with something like CM7/9 or MIUI.
If you want something close to stock, but with a few tweaks, CleanGB is going to be your best bet. One of the ROMs that's a bit older, but one of my favorite ones is the ERA EI22 based ROM, Legendary is the name of it.
If you want one of the CM ROMs, then CM7 will give you the best battery life, but CM9 is the most recent. Not great on battery though as that OS is supposed to run with a minimum RAM which our phone doesn't even have. So that's slightly to be expected.
As for themes, you gotta check out the themes section and see what you like for yourself. Same thing with ROMs. Check a few of them out and see what suits you best.
Head over to the Development section and the Themes section and peruse around for a bit. You'll certainly find something you like. With the devs we have now, this is seriously one of the best phones out there right now.
Hayzoos is totally on point with his answer. I would prioritize on what you want from your phone. What is #1 #2 etc..
If you like the stock touchwiz and your main priority is to stay as close to stock with a theme then roll with CleanGB and get a great theme, there's plenty.
If your #1 priority is theme then goto the themes section and find the one you like best and use the appropriate ROM that supports it.
If you are sick of your stock touchwiz then you have 3 choices. CM7 has the best battery life and you can get themes from the market and change it on a whim. However CM9 is the newest build of Android(Ice Cream Sandwich). There is still a couple awesome themes but they will need to be flashed through recovery just like the EL30 themes.
MIUI has probably the best customization but always keep in mind with our AOSP builds(MIUI, CM7, CM9) Sprints Visual Voicemail won't play nice and if you depend on it then go with the EL30 roms/themes. There are of course alternative voicemail options but it will take a few to set it up correctly.
No matter what you choose you are going to learn a new respect for what our device can do so don't get frustrated and happy flashing!!

Okay I just finished rooting it...didn't realize how simple it was. Honestly, I'm looking for the coolest looking, yet best performance hardware and battery ROM I can get. I want to be impressed by what I can now do with my phone.
Also another question, when I go to load my ROM and theme, do I have to factory reset my phone? If so, will I lose my sprint service information or is that saved? I don't have any of the sprint account information so I don't want to do anything to jeapordize losing service.
If you were in my shoes, what ROM and theme would you suggest I try first? Make me go >_>
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA
And please keep in mind that I am using gingerbread EL30.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA
Try AOKP b29. Flash it and leave your phone alone a bit. It will automatically reboot probably 2 times during the process. Then reboot recovery again and flash GAPPS.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
"Cool looking" is relative to you. If you want to stick with Gingerbread, then for best battery life grab CM7 then download some themes from the Play store (market) to throw into the theme changer.
If you want to stick with a TouchWiz ROM and like greens, then CleanGB is for you. If you like blues then The People's ROM has that. There are a bunch of different colored themes in the Themes subforum with screenies in the threads.
Can anyone answer my question about will I lose my sprint account information? Will I jeapordize my service?
Can anyone link me to a ROM that will work with EL30? 2.3.6? A ROM with fast performance and amazing battery life. Just link me!
But please tell me before I do any of this that I will not lose my service or anything related to entering any sprint account Information.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA
If you are already rooted you will lose nothing. Your Sprint service is never in jeapordy unless you do something horribly wrong. If you have saved your contacts on Google you can have them restored on any android phone or firmware. You did not specify if you liked Touchwiz or not, what kind of colored themes...no one can make these decisions for you. In Development is all the ROMs...they say so in the title. Most recent are always at the top. They are ALL good. Save yourself and everyone else some trouble and at least read the first few posts of each and then decide. The Developers went through a lot of their free time for no pay to make the ROMs and write about all the features. Give them the courtesy of reading about them and hitting the Thanks button for them.

No theme manager in cm9, that is CM7. AOSP ROMs do not come with all the Touchwiz niceties. You have to look through threads like the CM9 tips thread in General forum. This is why I linked you to clean GB. Now you would need the MTD version.

Please understand that you just converted your phone from bml to Mtd. You can not just flash any rom now. You can flash mtd roms. If you wish to go back to bml you have to use Odin and restore partitions. I am just telling you this because if you attempt to flash a bml rom you will boot loop the phone or get stuck at the boot screen and complicate yourself. There is a thread specifically for the voicemail and the ported vvm app from the et4g phone which will work with cm9. When using cm9 you have to go into the dialer settings and make sure your phone number is listed in the voicemail settings and not *86. It is to your advantage to read all of the old alpha cm9 thread and this new one currently available. You will learn a lot about cm9 and you will appreciate it even more

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I957 using Tapatalk 2
Los is most likely caused by the modem. I suggest running the el29 modem with whatever ICS ROM you choose.

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I957 using Tapatalk 2
If you want rock solid stability I suggest running blazer 4.1, which is gingerbread. But if ICS is what you want, you could run stock ff18. In addition, all of the custom ROMs based on ff18 should be more or less the same in terms of stability. Choose whichever one you like.

You could give Blu Kuban a try.
Also, give different modems a try but make sure she always updates her PRL & Profile after every modem flash, then give it time to settle in. If that one doesn't get her speeds up, try another using the same method above. Sometimes you have to try the whole lot before you find what works best in your area. Again, update PRL & Profile after every modem flash, don't just give it a few minutes or hours to prove its worth, give it a day or so then flash another if that one doesn't do well.
Whats stable on here for one may not be for another. I use CM9 nightlies with no issues at all. Honestly if you want a rom for someone that does not care about flashing go GB throw a theme on it and let them enjoy life.
Anything else you will find yourself tinkering with it. although I am on the nightly from 6/21 and have not looked back.
I'm a big fan of tFF18. I find it stable and nimble. Easy to work with and good theming.

Same here. I've been following the AOKP builds from when they were first brought here up till now.
CM 9
EDIT: No matter what ICS rom you choose, be VERY careful to read, understand and follow the installation instructions. Otherwise, you're going to end up with a very expensive brick. Also, check your MD5s.
-----------
I've been using CM 9 since v.A5, and I'm quite pleased with it. I can't say I've had stability problems with it, but the setup process can be tricky.
You have to get a GPS lock and update your Profile / PRL either right before upgrading or using their multiboot rom option (which worked perfectly for me).
Also, you need to remember to install the google apps separately, but I believe all AOSP roms have a similar requirement.
However, once you've passed these initial hurdles, the ROM runs great. I have no complaints and use it as my daily driver. I use Maps, 4G, Netflix, a bluetooth keyboard and mouse, and so on. My family teases me that whenever I'm not in front of a computer, I'm in front of my phone, so that should give you some insight on how thoroughly I use it.
Currently I have been using touch of sgsIII rom for about a week with no issues at all it has the voice talk and music player and messaging from the samsung galaxy s III and I am really liking the feel of this rom the only issue is that the sound effects are not working in the music player but I can personally deal with that til they find a fix other than that great work team rejects on this rom and I recommend it to anyone. But like said above one rom can work good for one and not another so give it a try and see how it works out for you.

I have four roms I rotate between, restoring and updating as new releases come out. I have had nothing but great experiences with all these, sans the occasional burp. Once I had them set up the way I like, all have been trouble free. If I had to pick the high points of each I would say Agat's rom is the best all around with great speed and battery life. Venum Ice has an original color scheme and lots of bells and whistles. M'ICS feels very similar to Ice to me but has a Cyan color theme. Blu Kuban is like a different animal in that it has an updater built in that lets you change tons of visual and functional settings.
Agat's tFF18 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1721065
Venum Ice http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1538848
M'ICS (currently my daily driver) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1740101
Blu Kuban http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1625535
Let me leave you with this... If I had to pick one of these and never flash again, my choice would prolly change any day you asked me. All are rock solid and well supported by great devs that are very active and responsive to their base. I can honestly say you can't go wrong with any of these.

What ICS ROM is best?

I'm looking to upgrade my dads phone. He has a custom GB ROM I already put on there months ago but since sprint finally rolling out ICS I was wondering what was best...cm9? F18 leak? He just wants ROM that is stable and has hacked hotspot.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
Well if he want a stable rom with Hotspot hack i recommend getting Phantom Blazer 4.1 Rom. But if he wants ICS roms CM9 will do.
I'm running M'ICS v 1.1. stable, good battery life and has sprint hotspot.
Let's be honest here, there are probably a dozen of these threads out here and I am quite sure a few quite recently. You could get a million different answers since it all really depends on the user themselves. There is so much that goes into deciding whats best for you I never get asking others. I mean opinions are great but personal experience is the best.
If you are just going to do if for every day use then flash the stock FF18, throw a recovery on it and flash the hotspot hack in themes and apps voila! you're done!
Sorry was not trying to flame I understand what you are asking just don't think a dozen people giving you different answers helps you. All the roms in development are great but all come with a little kwirk here or there.

Stability is one aspect, battery life is another. Best suggestion is to read through the threads of the roms that interest you and what style you like and test the battery life on it.
I personally like Wicked 1.5 and have 3 1/2 to 4 hrs on screen time. But that may not be the case for you. Based on what you run, how you run...
Browse away and give 'em a try but take head to flashing responsibly and read, read, read so you don't brick your phone.

I completely get it. It is alot to absorb.
There are 2 posts that I know of which are polling people about the roms in use but its all a matter of taste.
Besides the fact that some may be partial to a particular team, dev, etc.
Its just a hard question to answer.
Best solution is to try if you're willing. But there are safe kernals now and great people to give you advise if you get stuck.

[Q] Recommendations for updating my Epic 4G

Hi All,
I'm looking to update my phone with a new ROM/OS. I've rooted before and believe I currently have a MIDNIGHT ROM loaded (see attached phone screen-shot). I see references to CM9 and CM10, ICS/JB. I think i know the processes, ODIN, etc.... I'd just like to be pointed to the most stable, current files.
Thanks in advance.
If you want the most stable and best for the Epic 4G and coming from Midnight you may want to stick with one of the FC09 Toichwiz ROMs. If you are more adventurous and don't mind an AOSP ROM then CM9 is Ice Cream Sandwich for this phone. There are still a few bugs in CM10 and the Jellybean variants.

TPR is a great stable ROM. Great battery life, all the toggles, smoothness tweaks, etc. I went to it after CleanGB and even gave the included Zeam Launcher a whirl. Try it out. You won't be disappointed. I got the flashing bug after a couple months and have tried AOKP M6, CM9, then went back to TPR. Now I've gone to CM10, but may yet go back to TPR for the stability and great battery life.
Edit---
Be sure to Odin or flash the FC09 modem.

Thanks in advance.

I agree with the TPR comments BUT if you want that AOSP variant and stable with great battery life go to CM7. BATTERY life is the KEY to my statement/point of view.

Arschend,
Great ROM (only flashed it last night), very responsive, i love the theme and Toggles! Great job Kenny. I did not Odin or flash the FC09 modem, what am I missing?
Thanks

Thank you my friend. Which modem are you running? There are different schools of thought on modems. I always just go with latest official after the problems with the leaked modems. But whatever gives you beat speed and signal for you.

Frankly, I can't say for sure if FC09 is any better than earlier versions, but I have always had good luck running the latest official released modem. If you're comfortable using Odin, changing modems is easy and not particularly risky. There are CWM flashable versions of the modems, but that involves flashing a modded kernel, flashing the modem, then reflashing your intended kernel. To be honest, I think Odin is safer and simpler for modems.

FC09 is the latest. FC19 is a leak that never was released.

Sooooooo.........
Can I use TPR on the EVO, if so it's a no brainer.
I switched to the fc09 modem, did not detect any significant change in performance.
