[Q] Why will my rooted HTC Incredible not update?? - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
I'm new to this forum so i'm just learning how it works... but i have a problem i need some help with... I have an Incredible that is rooted, and i hadn't touched it for a while until a couple days ago. I had forgotten my password so i called verizon and had them do a factory reset to get me past the pin code. Once i was in i did a little messing around and then went into the System Updates menu to find that it was downloading the 4.08.(060?) update (87 mb). It finished downloading and prompted a restart and install, which led me to pressing the restart/install button. It then said "Rebooting..." for the next ten minutes or so, which i was pretty sure wasn't supposed to take that long, so my impatience made me click cancel cause i couldn't wait any longer. After it exited i went back into the menu and it said the system was up to date, when it DEFINITELY wasn't! So, i shrugged it off my shoulders and waited for the next one, which came last night. It prompted the install which i then started again, and it had the same "Rebooting..." message as before... only this one was there for like 5 min, then it automatically switched back to the "Your system is currently up to date" screen... It didn't even reboot...
So now that you know my story/situation, i have some questions...
Whats going on?
Whats wrong?'
and how do i fix it?
Thanks for any help at all

You said you are rooted, are you s-off and rooted? Check by turning off your phone completely, then hold power and volume down until hboot pops up. Do you have a custom recovery installed, as in ClockWorkMod or Amon Ra? Being rooted prevents you from installing OTA updates successfully if you do not have the stock recovery installed, stock radio, and stock apps I believe.
If you are rooted and have a custom recovery, why not just install a stock rom from Wildstang or Jermaine151 front the development section? You could keep your rooted status and flash other roms if you ever find the desire to do so.

I am s-off and rooted. And would i also find out if i have clockworkmod in the hboot menu? Or how would i find out?

Yes while on this menu, press volume down once so that the option "Recovery" is highlighted then press your power button. If you have a custom recovery installed it will likely be ClockWorkMod. It will be an all one color screen and labeled as "ClockWorkMod version..."
Same controls apply here as in hboot: volume up or down to highlight options and use the power button to select that setting. I say this because if you want to just boot back into your rom at this point then you must select the top option in this recovery to reboot and use your phone.

I'm pretty sure i've seen that before. So what all do i need to do to put a new ROM on my phone. I actually already have one installed (.zip), so what do i need to do from there and how long do you think it would take??

My apologies, press the optical button while in recovery to select options NOT power button. The power button serves as a manner to:
1) go back a menu
2) while on main, it just shows the ClockWorkMod (CWM) logo.
*Place the rom zip on the root of your sd card on NO folders.
*Reboot into Recovery
*Format data/factory reset
*Wipe Cache
*Select "Mounts and Storage," select and "Format Boot" then "Format System"
*On the main menu, highlight and select "Install Zip from SD Card." Now will be a list of items on the root of your sd card, press volume down or up until you have the rom zip highlighted then press the optical button.
*******If you're installing an Android Open Source Project (AOSP) rom: Once you select the rom zip and you see the progress bar complete, select "Install Zip from SD Card" then highlight and select "GApps zip" (Google apps). If you do not install GApps which are an additional download for AOSP roms, then you will not be able to functionally install apps because you will not have the Android Market or any Google app. Ignore this step if you are installing a Sense (or stock OTA) ROM.*******
Installing (also called "flashing") roms in recovery takes about two minutes at the most. What may take the longest and frequently does, is the next step: booting into the rom you flashed for the first time. Potentially it could take ten to fifteen minutes before you may be able to see a lock screen or the initial phone set up. Usually the time is about five minutes but it is entirely possible to be staring at either the HTC Incredible screen or boot animation for a prolonged amount of time.

Mmmmmmmk.... So i get how to place it on the root, and reboot into recovery, but the rest im not COMPLETELY sure about. I want to do it right so i don't have ANY problems... Any further explanation about the steps following?

I must add, DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT go forward with this if your contacts are not backed up either in Verizon Backup Assistant or preferably Gmail. You will have a rude awakening because this process DELETES all the data from your phone and essentially your phone will have absolutely nothing on it similar to the day you purchased it from the store.

If you are near a computer, watch from the 2:00 minute mark until the 3:30 minute mark, then resume watching from 5:28 until the 8:30 minute mark. The individual in the video does a rom overview and that's irrelevant for you after the 8:30 minute mark. Brief visual of this process:

If you are hung up on selecting options in recovery, is this an easier explanation?
Full Wipe and Flash Instructions:
Make a Nandroid Backup of your current rom
Reboot into ClockworkMod
Choose "wipe data/factory reset"
Go into "mounts and storage" menu and choose "format /boot" and confirm
Choose "format /system" and confirm
Go back to main menu and choose "install zip from sdcard"
Browse your sdcard for the rom zip and flash!

So when I backup the Rom, I'm basically backing up everything on my phone... And will the formatting do anything to the contents on the SD card? Also, will I absolutely need to move the zip over from the computer? Or since I downloaded it to my phone, can I access.it from there?

When you backup your rom, yes it preserves everything you see once you unlock your phone. Always have a minimum of at least one backup saved for emergencies: I suggest you copy/paste the file to your laptop as well in the event your sd card fails one day. Better safe than sorry.
The formatting options that are posted above delete the user interface data on the phone as well as various parts that control the system. Your sd card is untouched as is your emmc (internal memory data); both drives will have the music/videos/pics you saved to them upon the next time you connect your phone to a computer. What gets reset is primarily the software aspect of your phone. You do not need to download the file to a computer. Many users, myself included, download the rom zip directly to the phone and move it's location manually. Remember, when you download directly to your phone you still must move the zip file from your downloads folder to the root of the sd card.
The reason you should download to a computer is to check for the md5sum. This is essentially a long string of numbers that you match letter for letter, number for number to what the rom developer may have posted-if at all. It's akin to a social security number for files, verifying that your md5sum matches the md5sum that a developer has listed in their thread ensures you have the proper file size and not something less or more. If the md5sum does not match, you may run into a problem. I happen to be adventurous and have never checked an md5sum, I download roms, radios, kernels then wipe/flash to my heart's content haha

Ok I gotchu, I just backed up my Rom... which means its saved to my SD card right? Now, since the file is on my phone right now, how would I go about flashing the Rom as of now?? Should I go ahead and do it, after I back up everything??

Cool, your backup should be saved here: Sd card/clockworkmod/backup
If you feel comfortable enough to do so, follow the directions from my post on what to wipe/install.

Awesome! Thank you so much, you've been a great help

question... will i be able to flash a rom hat says android 2.3.5 when the software version i have is 2.2??

Hey, will i be able to download and flash a rom that says "Android 2.3.5" and use it on my phone that is on 2.2?

Yes, because when you flash a ROM you are replacing everything (i.e. the entire system). You will no longer be on 2.2 at that point.
Give it a try!

Oh ok cool thats what i thought!
Thanks again!
Ps... In you're opinion, what is the best ROM to flash?? Best looking, best operating, etc?

I'm biased so I couldn't answer this question. I use Nils' Business GingerSense but I tend to primarily use Nils' roms for any significant amount of time and be completely satisfied. It's what I want in a rom and I have been a firm supporter of Nils roms since I rooted last January.
In good faith I must say, try all the roms and settle only once you find a rom you love. It's all preference and nobody knows what you like better than you.

Probably beating a dead horse here

Hey guys, Thanks ahead of time for the help.
Like I said I'm probably beating a dead horse here but I'd appreciate a shove in the right direction.
I just Rooted my phone using simple root and I was looking to install a custom rom when I realized....
I have no idea how or what I'm doing.
APK?
ADB?
NAND?
all things I dont understand.
And while I did understand you can un-root your phone I never did think to look into how before I rooted my phone <not that I can imagine wanting to> Especially since many of my buddys work at a service and repair store and if my phone ever does need service, its no problem.
so while im not to worried about un-rooting at the moment if you feel like giving me some info I wont argue! haha
more importantly tho, What do I need to know about installing custom roms/themes etc and does anyone know how to get some free wifi tether going on?
downloaded free wifi tether from android market but it doesnt work for whatever reason.
Thank you and please forgive my ignorance, you guys are on a whole other level.
tried to install and use Rom Manager but got "An error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands!"
any idea's? cant fix permissions threw app either, gives the same error

That sounds like you don't have root permissions. Do you have a superuser app in the system drawer? If you don't then you probably don't have root access.
I am away from my pc right now but when I get back I will post a link to a guide that webs05 wrote will help explain a lot.
Welcome to the community!

Thats kind of the impression that I got, yet a couple of the Root only programs I'm using are working.
If thats the case its easy enough to redo if i lost root somehow but atm I dont know how to revert it back haha, ugh I hate being a newbie!
look forward to your later post, ty.
it does sound like you are rooted but you are getting a error trying to use clockwork is the img that is used in simple root does not allow superuser access for some reason... More than likely
ok my first question is can you boot into recovery? You do that by turning the phone off and, once it is off holding Vol Down and the power button. You should be able to hit the down arrow once and hit the power button to boot into recovery.
You should be able to do this just fine. This is where you will flash ROM's. You can do this with clockwork, but you need to flash their recovery image. I personally prefer look up ROM's here to see what's going on with them and flash them that way but the choice is yours.
You do need to find a ROM that you like and you need to flash it either with your recovery or from ROM manager.
This guide should answer a lot of your questions. If that helps thank Webs05 he gathered up the info and put it in one place any other questions feel free to ask.

sounds like you're not rooted correctly.
first link is not working for me, I will check out that second link when I get home and try that. But I presume this is the one I found it by the user name.
Both extremely helpful posts, I swear I searched for hours trying to find something similar, TY I'll let you guys know my outcome when I get a chance to try it out.
I'm starting to think I'm missing a whole second step after doing Simpleroot for 1.47 but not able to figure out what exactly that is haha, Oh man I am so about to give up haha

What steps exactly did you do?
Only the ones in the simpleroot post where you click through the 4 buttons for each step?
If so, you should be rooted, but you have to load a ROM to continue. If so, follow these steps here for the basic stock rooted ROM:

Follow it from the NOTE: through step 18 and you'll be golden

Were you able to boot into recovery?
Sent via the Sprint HTC EVO
Yes, I am able to get it into recover, Power+ volume down and then recovery and then I can hold power and volume up for an options menu...If I recall, did this the other night, cant remember why.
Its starting to sound like your rooting process did not complete. Right after hitting power and vol down then selecting recovery you should see some options i.e. backup/restore, flash zip from SD card, wipe... If you see those download a ROM and put it on your SD card. Go back to recovery select wipe and you need to wipe dalvik cache, cache, and factory settings ( can't remember what exactly its called) then return to the previous menu and select flash zip. From there its pretty self explanatory. If you can't see anything I just said it sounds like you need to try rooting from the beginning again. Hope that helps.

good to hear!
If you want to change ROM's remember to always do a Nandroid backup first. That way if it messes up you have a place to start over. Whenever you are switching to a new ROM it usually helps if you wipe. Sometimes you don't need to but if you get stuck in a boot loop that means you should have

Same Problem
I'm having the same problem regarding the privileged commands error. I just tried your advice with the power off and then power on while holding the volume down button. That definitely booted into ClockworkMod Recovery. I'm now at the point where I have a series of options. Which should I use?
- reboot system now
- apply sdcard:update.zip
- wipe data/factory reset
- wipe cache partition
- install zip from sdcard
- nandroid
- partition menu
- advanced
- +++++Go Back+++++
EDIT: Just read previous responses more carefully. I guess maybe I need to rewipe tonight. I thought I didn't want to install a rom until I'm able to flash clockworkmod recovery. I'll take any additional advice not listed here.

If you are able to boot into recovery then you should be able to flash a custom ROM. If I am correct you probably used the simple root method. The img that you flashed at the end of that does not allow superuser access for some reason. You need to flash a custom rom.
If it shows clockwork at the top when you are in recovery then you should be able to flash a new ROM from ROM manager or you can just place the ROM on the root of the sd card and select install zip from sd card. Just make sure to wipe.
Hope that helps.

[Q] OK, so what am I missing....

First off, thanks for all the help so far, this site is the best!
I just rooted my Evo using the unrevoked3. Had a little bit of trouble, nothing major, and overall it was a success. I also installed ROM Manager and Titanium Backup, based on suggestions found here.
The problem is, I'm not quite getting how to flash the roms... I downloaded one through ROM manager, and it seemed to work, but I didn't notice a single thing different. I tried to install CyanogenMod, and it downloaded, but it would always fail during the install.
I tried downloading on my computer, then moving the .zip file to my sdcard. Then I select "install rom from sdcard" and everything seems to go ok, I end up having to go into recovery and "rollback" my phone to the stock rom, because twice now I've almost bricked my phone.
Really, what I'm wanting is a setup like that "Kuma Style" one (without the animal), and a different bootscreen. I have spent a lot of time searching around, and it seems simple enough, I just seem to be missing some integral part of the proccess.....
Any help is appreciated!

I am not familiar with Unrevoked, but just running unrevoked doesn't completely root your phone. You need to do the second parts of rooting which unlocks nand.
Ah, so there is more to do. Maybe that's the problem then.... *off in search of how to unlock nand

Unlocking nand just unlocks something so that you can save full image backups. That wouldn't lead to your phone not installing a ROM right, it's just something you'll want just in case things go wrong. So still finish the root and get nand. But that's not what you're missing here.
Possible error: Did you wipe settings &factory reset and wipe cache in ClockworkMod before flashing the ROM? I think that could lead to some problems.
Try flashing the alternative Amon Ra recovery through rom manager (will state that rom manager won't be fully functional unless clockworkmod is installed) and loading the roms onto the sd card then reboot into recovery. Amon Ra seems to work better imo than clockworkmod. When you're talking about something like "kuma style," those are themes that are usually flashable in recovery also. The boot animation could alse be flashable in recovery but if not, there are instructions on how to adb push custom ones onto your phone.

Gah! So I downloaded the enamored theme, moved it to the sd card, then went to ROM Manager and selected "Reboot into Recovery"and selected the enamored.zip. It said the install was a success, but when I rebooted, the phone stuck on the bootanimation. I tried restarting a couple times, but it always gets stuck in the same place.
I booted into recovery (if thats waht you call the hold the volume button down while pushing the power button trick), and selected recover, then nandroid, then a time under yesterdays date. Phone recovered fine.
WtH am I doing wrong? I realize I am way out of my league, but I'm not completely retarded. Again, GAH!
Are u wiping data and cache when flashing a ROM? I have been stuck at the CM6 boot animation when coming from a different Rom and not wiping.

When you flash a theme, it could take up to 2-5 minutes to finish. This occurs during the boot animation. I flash themes all the time and I notice it's usually around 2-3 minutes wait. Maybe faster for others but that's just been my experience. If it's over 5 minutes than there's probably something wrong with your zip file or maybe clockworkmod recovery doesn't flash it properly. Also, it could be an issue with the kernel you're using...I noticed on kingklick cfs #10, I was stuck on boot animation for about 7 minutes and so I reverted back to the stock kernel and the theme was applied within 3 minutes.
ok, apparently I've been missing that step...
where do I do that again?

I waited a good long time. Am I at least headed in the right direction? Sorry to sound whiny, it's just that there's a few little things I want to do, and I'm intimidated as hell by actually doing any command line, so I'm hoping to avoid that- aka riding someone else's coattails
First, which rom are you using and is it stock or custom kernel? Are you using clockworkmod recovery? Try flashing the alternative amon ra recovery in rom manager then boot into recovery and apply your selected theme.
if you are using a stock rom it must say stock 2.2 deodexed
if it is not a deodexed rom.. of any kind.. then themes will say they flashed but they will either brick your phone or not work at all.
and stop using clockwork.... just use amon ra

I could be way off here, but I've seen some people who rooted using unrevoked, and run into trouble flashing things (or maybe I'm thinking of trouble with terminal commands) and it turned out they couldn't find flash_image anywhere in there SD card, Which should be installed (someone please correct me if I'm wrong).
I saw a lot of reports of this in chainsDDs superuser thread, if I remember correctly. They had to install flash_image.img (which is a file available on toasts part 2 root tutorial)
I obviously could be wrong about this, I've never used unrevoked, I rooted via toast, and his method included everything.
@ V_lestat
Thanks for the heads up about themes having the ability to brick your phone if not deodexed, I never knew that. I flash roms and kernels a lotbut never messed with themes much.
At OP, have a look at virus Rom thread. It's a great ROM, and he has built some different themes to go with it. Beautiful stuff, great ROM, great thread.
Good luck

See, some people say use clockwork, some people say Amon.
I looked around a lot beforehand, and people kept saying to use unrevoked, so I did. Now people say I should have used Toast?
Thanks for everybodies help so far, I am reading everything and taking it all in.
I Don't Mean to add any Confusion to your situation. I am new to this also.. I went with unrevoked also and when I booted into recovery with clockwork mod. I did a nand back up first to make sure if anything went wrong I could just boot back into recovery and load my backup. Then I wiped my Data & Davlick Cache all of the caches. Then I installed my Rom and it worked like a charm. I will add it did take about 5 to 7 mins to boot only on the first time though. I hope that helps some as to the process and what to do first don't give up XDA rocks with the smartest mind on the planet.

If you are using ROM Manager to "install zip from card" it presents you with a dialog with two unchecked check boxes. One of them is "wipe data + cache". make sure you check it before hitting ok on that dialog.
If you are manually booting into recovery then in the recovery choices you will see one that says wipe data and one thats says wipe davlik cache. first do a nandroid back up then wipe those data and davlik then install the rom. By the way are you just installing a theme or a full rom that might be the issue i am just wondering maybe a senior member can help on wether you can install a theme over a rooted stock theme or not?
Success!
I went into ROM Manager, backed up current ROM, went into recovery manually, wiped the cache, then installed from zip, and it worked! I tried a cool theme I found, and I like it, but it seemed old. I just installed fresh, and the enamored theme, and all is working great!
A couple more questions,
1) how do I get my contacts back?
2) How do I get my apps back onto my phone? I have them backed up on appbrain, but I haven't been able to find how to get them back to the phone.
So far, I've tried a couple of ROM's (and/or themes) and I've ended up flashing back to my own "safe" one, until I figure these two things out.
A tremendous thanks to everyones help! I seriously couldn't have done it without you guys
Edit; Oh yeah, one other thing. How do I delete the other nand backups? There's like 5, and I need to free up some memory. I tried going in and selecting one to see if it gave me the option to delete, but I didn't see anywhere that it did.... Got it. Search feature to the rescue

[Q] What to do after rooting?

So..I'm pretty noobish at all this, after doing my research I've finally rooted my phone wanting to mess with setCPU, flashing roms, and getting custom themes and boot animations, unfortunately i spent all my time figuring out how to simply root and nothing beyond..
i'd be grateful if anyone could post threads or just help in general with the above topics
Become a flashaholic like the rest of us. BTW once start you can't stop.
Best advice I can give is to read, read, read and then read some more. Trust me the answers to your questions are in the 1000000s of pages.
Myn's ROM is very good. But I like Caulkins ROM the best with netarchy's 4.2.1 kernel. You don't want to use setCPU with 4.2.1 its not needed.
Just my 2 cents.
And then for some real fun start playing with the CM 6.1 RC1. That's were the fun really begins.

The first thing I did was to start flashing custom ROMS. In the early EVO days, there weren't many choices. Now, there are tons of good options out there, so get to flashin'! You'll also get lots of good ideas hanging out in the themes and mods forum. Stroll around in the "post your screens" thread and you'll be blown away by what some folks have accomplished.
Just my thoughts, of course, I suspect you'll get lots of other suggestions.
yea unfortunately lots of these terms are like a foreign langauge to me =\
after looking up the process of installing roms i see lots of people are saying do a nandroid back up and then copying the rom, radio/WIMAX/PRI/NV updates and kernel
the definitions/translations for that?
Different parts of your phone have their own embedded software that can and doses get upgraded. For example, when you get a major update from Sprint, either OTA (over the air) or donwloaded to your PC and run from there, it not only updates your operating system (Android) and all the other little apps, but frequently your cell receiver/transmitter (radio or baseband), 4G receiver/transmitter (WiMAX) get their own software updates as well. Custom ROM creators frequently exclude these from their packages, so you have to update them separately.
Nandroid is a backup functionality you have once the phone is rooted. It is available through RECOVERY. So if you boot your phone into the BOOTLOADER by holding down the VOL DOWN and powering up, you should be able to choose RECOVERY by using VOL UP and VOL DOWN keyes as arrows, and POWER button as SELECT (or ENTER). Once in RECOVERY mode, there are several options, including backup/restore. The backup IS the nandroid backup everyone mentions. It creates an image of your phone's current setup. If you mess things up later on and the phone system is damages, you can recover by restoring this image to your phone.
Hope this helps.

This is my first time quoting and I am pretty noobish myself...I don't know these terms either even though I spent all that time trying to root...I still haven't found out how to use a custom rom or boot, I'm a little clueless even after reading for quite awhile. :/

Using a custom ROM (or kernel) or boot animation is done through "flashing." Flashing is done via Recovery which can be accessed by the steps listed in a post above. I use the Amon Ra recovery and there are directions how to isntall this elsewhere on the site. I copy the ROM (or kernel or boot anim) to the root of my SD Card, boot into recovery, nandroid backup, wipe caches, wipe data, then I can specify an option to boot from zip on sdcard. (don't remember if it's high-level menu item or not) Anyway, find a Recovery you like (Clockwork or Amon Ra) and there will be specific directions on everything you can do on that Recovery's thread.
This is really a condensed version and there's way better and more thorough advice in Development and Q & A forums in stickies. I highly recommend reading those.
Did you know that you can change the whole look of the phone just by changing the system font? And it's real easy too

If you're using rom manager, it will tell you at the top what recovery is currently installed.
Hopefully you didn't "just" wipe battery stats - there's a process;
It should be done as follows (copied/summarized from the cyanogen wiki found here);
Battery recalibration
1. Charge the phone to full battery; let it keep charging until the battery says it is fully charged. Do not just wait until the light is green, it isn't always fully charged, causing a lot of inaccuracies. (You can check by going to: Settings -> About Phone -> Status -> Battery Level = Full.)
2. Wipe battery stats with Amon_Ra or ClockworkMod recoveries.
NOTE: To have the most accurate of battery stats, reboot the phone immediately after wiping the battery stats and wait for it to boot completely to the desktop. Once your entire boot is done and you have full access to the phone, go ahead and pull the charger and continue with this troubleshooter.
1. Do not charge the phone until after draining the battery completely, resulting in it automatically shutting off.
2. Recharge the phone completely and then use as you normally would.
I am surprised that no one has posted this yet.

so the primary point of the nandroid backup is to have the ability to go back to the stock ROM if i choose or even if something screw up while installing a new ROM?

Nandroid isn't the same thing as titanium, think of nandroid as an image, sort of like a disk image or a windows restore point. Once restored, it will take you back to exactly where you were at the time of the backup.
The numbers that you see in Rom Manager represent the recovery version. You currently have clockworkmod version 2.5.0.1 installed.
It's been spelled out above, and elsewhere through the forums, but I'm bored and I want to clean up this post anyway (I tried that new 8whatever keyboard again - still hate it. And before I cleaned it up, this post was three paragraphs of broken english), so here are some basic steps spelled out on what to do immediately after rooting, along with some terms.
The first thing you want to do once rooted is go into rom manager, and towards the bottom, hit the option that says "Flash Alternate Recovery". Once you do this, you'll notice at the top where it used to say Current Recovery: ClockworkMod 2.5.0.1 it will now say Current Recovery: Ra Recovery 1.8.0.
Now close out Rom Manager, and turn off the phone. Turn it back on while pressing down on the volume. The screen with the skateboarding Andy's will show up - this is the hboot screen. Among other things, this screen will tell you the version of hboot you're running, and whether you're S-ON or S-OFF. There may be a few different options listed here, but we're only interested in the one that says Recovery.
Select Recovery. The phone will reboot, and you should end up on a screen with green text. At the top it will say Android System Recovery, and all the way at the bottom, it will say Build : RA-evo-v1.8.0 From here select Backup/Restore. There are a few options, but note the two important ones - Nand backup, and Nand restore. Select Nand backup. It will ask if you're sure, so say yes. It will take awhile and the bottom of the screen will fill with dots. When it's done select Return then Reboot System Now. Congratulations, You just performed your first Nand Backup using Amon Ra recovery.
When you can, mount your phone as a drive, and go into folder inside the nandroid folder on your sdcard. You'll see a folder with today's date. Copy it somewhere safe on your computer. If you're interested, you can look in that folder and note the wimax.img file - this is where you're backing up the infamous RSA Keys (I'm not explaining what that is here, just know that you REALLY want to have this backed up, and kept somewhere safe). once the copying is done, unmount as a drive, and disconnect from your computer. Congratulations, now it's playtime.
Use either Titaniaum Backup or MyBackup Pro to back up all of your apps and data. Mybackup Pro will also backup call logs and text messages and things like that - I'm pretty sure Titanium does also, but I'm not sure. Your contacts should be backed up to google for easy restoration later.
Head over to the dev section and find a ROM that appeals to you. You can go with completely stock rooted if you want (which is essentially where you are now, but stock rooted would have the latest OTA updates when they come out), or stock with some tweaks to Sense, or non Sense at all (the most popular of these is CM, which rebuilds Froyo from the ground up.) Sense refers the stock launcher called Rosie, as well as some buried functionality in the phone - for example the mail, calendar, and dialer apps look and act different between Fresh and CM roms. Sense is a UI developed by HTC to go over what is commonly referred to as vanilla android/AOSP. AOSP stands for Android Open Source Project and is what google released on the n1, CM is an AOSP rom. Also, you're looking for a Deodexed rom (as opposed to odexed) so you can theme it later if you want.
Once you find a rom you like, download it to the root of your sd card (you may want to download it on your computer and move it to your sdcard). Refer to the above to get back into recovery, but this time instead of selecting Backup/Restore, select Wipe. Select Wipe data/factory Reset and let it do its things, then select Wipe cache, and let it do it's thing, then select Wipe Dalvic-cache, and let it do it's thing. What you've just done is erased all of the personal and superfluous data that was in the phone - you want to make sure that when you load the new rom, you're loading it on an empty slate, and that there's nothing of your old data left that could possibly corrupt something in the new rom. Some people say to wipe all of those options 2 or even 3 times each - I don't buy that though. Also, don't worry about the other wipe options you had there. Not needed now.
So once you've wiped, hit return, and select Flash zip from sdcard. It will pull up a list of .zip files found on the root of your sdcard. select the rom you just downloaded, and let it install. This may take a while. Don't freak. Once it's done, select Reboot system now. This will take a while too, maybe even a few minutes. Don't freak. Once it eventually boots up, restore all of your stuff with either Titanium or MyBackup Pro. Congratulations, You just flashed your first rom.
Now head over to the themes and apps section. Find a theme that interests you. Make sure its compatible with your rom (either sense or cm) and download it. Flash this the same way you flashed your rom, but you may or may not need to wipe first. Always refer to the op of those threads for specific instructions.
Finally and most importantly - head over to the thread in my sig and find a new font you like. All the cool kids are doing it. When you find one you like, copy it to your sdcard and flash it the same way you've been flashing everything else. You don't need to wipe anything for those though.
Tips;
1: never forget to wipe. As a rule, when flashing roms, you'll be wiping what people refer to as all three - that means wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache, and wipe dalvic cache. When flashing kernels or themes, you'll generally just be wiping cache and dalvic cache. Again though, always refer to the instructions in the op in which you found whatever it is your flashing.
2: if you'll be flashing both themes and roms, and possibly kernels, never flash in the same recovery session. So rom first, full reboot, then kernel, full reboot, then theme, full reboot. In that order, wiping and rewiping as needed.
3: give you're rom at least a few days before you give up on it, most need time to settle into your phone so to speak, and need a few battery cycles to get to peak performance, which brings up to
4: You should wipe your battery stats whenever you flash a new rom. Remember you saw that option under Wipe back in recovery? Well now you get to use it. I posed the link and process above in the thread.
5: At this point most people use Amon Ra instead of clockworkmod because there seems to be uncertainty as to weather or not clockworkmod correctly wipes. ONLY Amon Ra backs up the wimax.img, clockwork does not.
6: rom manager is a graphical front end for clockworkmod. A lot of people still use it to flash, becasue it's so easy to use, it can be used to download roms directly in the app, and doesn't require the zip file to be on the root of the sdcard - it van be anywhere on the card. Don't forget though, you can download the rom through the app if you want, but still switch to amon ra to flash it.
7: you cannot restore a nand backup you make with amon ra with clockwork, and you cannot restore a nand backup you make with clockwork with amonra.
8: on the off chance you need to change your hboot version for any reason, you can only restore nand backups with the same hboot version that they were backed up with. NOTE, were talking about hboot here, not recovery.
Damn, that was a lot of of text. Sorry about that.
i would recommend reading this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=790427
i have only been in the android world for about 3 months now, and was able to root and flash custom roms with ease within a few weeks of getting my evo. its really not hard at all once you understand the process.
as far as what rom to flash, that depends on the user. different rom have different features. if i were you, i would recommend reading the specs on each rom before flashing. some may have features missing, such as 4G, full camera support and such. And usually all that info is provided in the thread along with the rom. so, pay attention to that.
as for me, the goal for rooting was to do certain things that was only possible with root. such as, Nandroid backup, ShootMe, Wifi Tether and to disable some of the Sprint apps. so, i am using a stocked rooted rom. it is what it says. the same stock rom as the factory but rooted.
a lot of ppl use various custom roms to get better battery life. battery life on stock roms have improved quiet a bit lately. at least in the past 3 months, i have noticed a big improvement. hope this helps answer some questions.
and remember to always do a nandroid backup. i also use My Backup Pro to backup my Call Logs, SMS & MMS.
few questions about flashing ROMs..
1. i still have to backup all my contacts, apps, etc, i have titanium backup pro and if i back them all up how do i get them back once the new ROM is flashed?
2. I know im supposed to do a nandroid backup but do i need those special recovery images first? (AmonRA/Clockwork)
3. What's the purpose of ROM M...anager in all of this?
ok, so titanium pro will backup everything, even how your homescreen is set up.
the nandroid is for if there is a problem, or if you want to go back. ALWAYS HAVE AT LEAST ONE BACKUP MADE WITH AMON AT ALL TIMES OR YOU COULD PERMANENTLY LOSE 4G (FOREVER, NO FIX EVER)
rom manager can control clockwork recovery while booted up in a touch screen interface. it removes the need to use the annoying volume keys. doesnt work with amon.
i would highly reccomend amon to you. it is just that much better, but doesnt work with rom manager. volume keys arent that hard anyways. use amon.
ONCE AGAIN, ALWAYS HAVE AT LEAST ONE AMON BAKCUP AT ALL TIMES, AND ALWAYS BACKUP BEFORE DOING ANYTHING EVEN SLIGHTLY CONSIDERED MODDING. SERIOUSLY, TAKE 4 MINUTES OUT OF YOUR DAY TO WATCH DOTS APPEAR, AND SAVE YOURSELF 200 DOLLARS OR HOURS OF SETTING STUFF BACK UP. SERIOUSLY. DO IT.
Thanks for the detailed and informative post! This should be in the question and answer thread. I'm finally able to change my font and onto ROMS. I'll reply back once I'm on a normal keyboard.

1. all your contacts are backup-ed on your google account. when you sign on to the google account after you flash a new rom, the contacts will be automatically downloaded to the phone. so, no further work needed to be done there. i use My Backup Pro to backup my SMS/MMS and Call logs. I think it is very similar to Titanium. Basically you use the program to backup the stuff you need onto your SD Card. Then, once you have flashed your new rom, you install Titanium or the My Backup Pro and use the Restore feature to restore what you need. As far as Apps go, I found that it was better to use App Brain, since that keeps a log of all the apps install on the phone, its usually a breeze to re-install all of them through that.
2. Amon RA & Clockwork perform the same function. you use either to flash custom roms, perform nandroid backups, etc. so, once you root your phone, you will need to install one of these.
3. ROM Manager.. does what the name says it does. you can change the rom on your phone using that utility app. But i think the Amon Ra/Clockwork Recovery method is the preferred way of changing out roms.

[Q] Evo 4G Doesn't Like to Boot in New ROMs

Most of this info may be extraneous, but I'll throw it in here just in case.
A few days ago, I decided to root my Evo 4G from the stock, 2.2 OS (HTC Sense?) using the Unrevoked website (using a PC running XP). It worked fine and got me rooted. Trouble began to arise when I attempted to install new ROMs such as CM-6 and Salvage. I decided to fork out a few bucks and pay for the ROM Manager Pro app, thinking that it would save me considerable hassle. After downloading the most recent CyanogenMod 7.0.0-RC2 through the app, I selected the "Install Gapps as well" option but did NOT check "Wipe Data and Cache" before letting the app do its work of installing and flashing and whatever for me. Upon completion of the installation, my phone then automatically rebooted normally, but became stuck on the boot image of the android on the skateboard with the spinning arrow. I let that sit for about 6 hours (I went to bed) thinking it was just first-time setup before I battery-pulled and booted into recovery, restored my original settings, and started over. This time I did everything the same except remembered to check "Wipe Data and Cache," as an online tutorial told me I ought to when switching from stock to another ROM, and it installed and booted correctly. I ran CM-7 for a day before deciding to try out a different ROM, downloading and installing it through the same interface, ROM Manager Pro. Everything went well until it got stuck, again, at the boot image. After about 30 min I battery-pulled and tried to restore back to CM-7, only to be greeted by another endless boot image. I was able to restore back to my original backup, but am now back to square one. What the heck am I doing wrong?
EDIT: That original backup I mentioned was made immediately after rooting the phone in preparation to install CM-7.
Sorry my technical knowledge is grossly lacking, I just got into this game. Patience and any help is GREATLY appreciated.
When switching from one rom to another, it is always important to remember to wipe data and cache. There are a few rare cases that it is not necessary to do this, but I really recommend that if you are just starting out, wipe them both for good measure until you learn enough that you can tell when you can get away with not wiping. Also, I know that one common problem that people experience with Rom Manager is that Unrevoked contains the Amon_RA recovery image, and Rom Manager is designed to with with the Clockwordmod recovery. In Rom Manager, you should be able to see which one you are currently using, and you should also be able to use Rom Manager to download and flash the latest Clockworkmod recovery. I too use Rom Manager as a convenient way of making sure that my rom is up to date, and to download roms, but I recommend that when you want to change roms, you do it by booting into recovery mode, and performing the wipe and install manually, as I have found that this method will help prevent errors like boot loops. I hope this helps!
P.S. Feel free to PM me if you ever need any help.

So, for example, if I wanted to restore back to my CM-7 backup, would I want to boot into recovery and just restore to the backup or re-flash the ROM, then boot into recovery and try to restore it? I'm still getting the endless boot image.
Oh, and I am running clockworkmod, as per the instructions for ROM Manager.
Thanks for the quick reply!
Move CM7-RC2.zip and the gapps.zip (or whatever its name; ex: filename.zip) to the root of your SD card by plugging it into your computer via USB and mounting it as a drive. Go ahead and exit all that.
Turn off your phone.
Hold volume down + power.
Go to Recovery.
Wipe the following: data/factory reset, cache, (in Advanced, accessed from same menu) wipe dalvik.
Go back.
Install .zip from SD.
Choose your .zip(s) [CM7, Gapps] from your card, flash, and presto!
I'm not too experienced with ROM Manager as I do not use it whatsoever, but I know the above stated method should work perfectly.
Furthermore,
I'm not sure if a format_all.zip should be used here with CM7. If someone who knows would like to chime in about this, that'd be great.

This is the way I would flash any roms that you want from here on out.
I have used CM7 and have not had to use the format.zip from calk, so I don't think it is absolutely necessary, but it probably wouldn't hurt.

I recommend flashing the format all zip whenever switching ROMs. It completely formats the various partitions and leaves a blank slate for the new ROM to be installed. I also recommend using ROM Manager to flash Amon_Ra recovery and do everything manually instead of using ROM Manager. People seem to have a lot less problems with Amon, and I have never had any issues flashing ROMs or kernels or anything with it.
You won't be able to restore a Clockwork backup with it but it never hurts to just flash a new ROM and restore your Titanium backups, assuming that you made them.
Wow, thanks all for the fast replies!
Ok, I now have Destroyer installed and working (finally!), but I am experiencing the apparently common black-on-black text box problem. I downloaded the .zip to be flashed to fix this, but am not sure how to proceed. Do I just do the exact same thing as flashing a new ROM entirely or is there something special I need to do to let the phone know that it is an update?

Not sure with ROM Manager but you can flash that from recovery the same way you flash a ROM. I'm sure there is an option in ROM Manager to flash it, I just couldn't tell you where. Do not wipe anything before flashing that though. Only wipe when flashing ROMs and kernels.
Go back into Recovery and flash that .zip the exact same way you flashed the ROM. Minus the data wipe.
Others: Does he wipe cache/dalvik as well? I've seen some posts say to do that when flashing mods that are flashable .zip and some don't. I've done both ways and seen no negative consequences (as of yet).
Yeah, that last post was dumb, I clicked "Submit" before I tried anything on my own. Flashing it the exact same way minus data wipe worked perfectly, though the prediction boxes for input in the market app (when you hit "search" and start typing, the things that drop down to give suggestions) still appear to be black on black. Bleh.
Also, the Dalvic wipe before installing was a good idea; I don't know for sure if it made a difference but a good habit to get into.
EDIT: By the way, this has got to be the least grammatical/spelling errors in a forum thread I've ever seen. I think I may like this site...
Wiping the cache and dalvik most likely isn't necessary but it can never hurt.

I'm really new to this stuff myself (rooted for the first time ~2 days ago) and so I'm unsure how to further fix the blacked out predictions in the Market. Perhaps you could try contacting those within the thread of the ROM you downloaded, specifically citing that you installed the initial blacked out fix so that they don't redirect you back to the fix you've already applied, testing your patience and furthering your wait for perfection.
Aye, this site has got to be full of some of the most fluent English-speaking persons I've found on the internet.

Simply put: Having big problems attempting to root. Please help.

I am new to the root world but am good with things of the sort, just more used to it on a computer as opposed to on a phone. I am new to this site but it's pretty clear that this is the place to go for help. I have followed instructions to a T and the root simply did not work for me. Basically I followed the instructions here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1311194 and superuser just didn't show up in my apps. I read around and saw that if you get an error message at the end (which I did) that the root still worked and superuser should be there but not for me. I'm on build number UVKL1 if that helps. Any advice or help would be appreciated or at least point me in the right direction. Thanks in advance.

Are you sure you are using the right superuser file? You can't use the one they link in the OP if you are on 2.3.6. If you are on 2.3.5 it should work.
For 2.3.6 you need:
su-3.0.7-efgh-signed.zip
Also if you plan on flashing a ROM right away there's no point in giving the stock rom root, just flash a custom ROM which will come with superuser.
Listen bro once u have recovery installed it is easy listen to the guy a few post up about installing recovery first! Its easy select PDA make sure phone is connected then start. Now for root it is super easy!!!! Download file from computer put it on the root of sdcard. That means no folders. Just click the file and drag it over to ur internal sdcard. I repeat internal........now on ur phone once u disconnect from computer boot into recovery u want to go to install zip then install from internal zip and flash it. Now it might fail the first time DO NOT LEAVE RECOVERY stay in and flash that file til it says complete it might take 3 or 4 times. Now this works for 2.3.5 and 2.3.6 so u good to go bro. Trust me this file works.

Su.3.0.5-efgh-signed.zip will work on 2.3.6 as well...but gives you a failed alert in recovery but upon reboot actually installed. worked for me perfect, it failed, rebooted, there it was first attempt

Easiest way.flash recovery with Odin.then flash a rooted ROM.done.
From a galaxy better than yours.
Thank you to everybody for responding so quick, hopefully it helps me out. I do have Kies and tried multiple times like one or two of you said. I tried quite a few times and superuser just didn't install. I even went step by step with a video at the same time. As far as flashing custom ROMs goes instead of the stock one, I'm kinda lost. Like I said I'm new to this so I'm not exactly sure what ROMs are best or what they do different than others. I've seen some things around that look interesting but what I got from it was that I need superuser before anything which I'm trying to do but obviously having issues. I'll give it another go and report back, any more information (in beginner language) would be greatly appreciated, I'm sure I'll be able to pick this up pretty quickly with some assistance.
I got it done! Thanks to everyone, I actually got it done using 3.0.5 and worked perfect, no error or anything. I guess the determining factor was loading from the internal sd card instead of the external. Not sure why the video I watched specified internal sd card. O well, now I have Superuser...now what should I do? Lol, some basic tips, tricks, and cool stuff to do would be great. Thanks again.
Make a clockworkmod recovery backup before you do anything else. this way you can start over if you screw something up.

Always, on any new phone, rule #1 after u root !!!
Don't forget!!!
In regards to what to do after, take some time, read around so u can get an idea of what ppl has done, what they have screwed and how to avoid it, depending on ur version some apps are locked and if u want to use them u may have to freeze apps instead of removing them, then again u can go and start testing ROMs till u find what u like
Glad we could assist ur in ur quest!
Not too sure what clockworkmod is but I'll check that out because I've seen it quite a few times. Thanks a lot to everybody, this has been a very responsive first thread and I appreciate it. Any recommendations on what mod is most popular/best from experience? I've seen a decent amount of good feedback from Juggernaut and a couple others I kinda forget the names of. I'm thinking of getting an ICS type ROM but I see so many other types of things out there, I'm just looking for some direction/how exactly I go about it. Besides the backup, should I do anything else besides flashing the ROM with Odin? Thanks yet again for any responses that are helpful.
Once you choice a ROM you hook your phone to PC and install it on the root your Sd card (meaning not in any folders) now clockworkmod is what you're going to use to do your back up and flash a ROM. Hold up down volume and power until it vibrates then you can just release the power...what comes up is clockworkmod. Do a backup... Once your finished the back up your ready to flash your ROM..be sure to follow the devs direction on doing a wipe and clearing cache..then go to external storage find the file you installed
