[Q] SMS forwarding from the (sprint) network level - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

There are apps that forward SMS and MMS to other phones, but I am searching for a way to forward the SMSs to another phone number WHILE my EVO is out of service. I know this is on the network level. Does anyone know if sprint offers such a service? Options?

the only way to find out is to call sprint and ask. I know they do offer call forwarding for like 2 dollars a month. But I'm not sure about text forwarding.

Unfortunately this is not an option.

Maybe integrate your phone with Google Voice? You can set other phones to send calls/messages to from the GV website, not sure about SMS though. If you do, just read ask directions and instructions, make sure you set what to send to which phone correctly, and dl the GV app, setting the messaging option to send messages "Also via the messaging app".

Sprint got rid of text forwarding a few years back after some hooplah about it being used for unscrupulous doings.

You could always go with Google Voice.
It will sync all of your texts to your device, and you can view them online. If your Evo is out of service it should still receive the texts in GV. Assuming your Evo is out of service you would be able to go to google.com/voice on your computer (or another device) to view SMS and voicemails. From here you can Send and Receive texts.
When I'm at work doing backups/restores/flashes I will generally use GV website to send and recieve texts.

to your google voice number? Are there any added fee's or complications you've run into? Did you just have to call customer care? I heard it takes twice the amount of rings as normal to hit the google voice mail is this true?
I could see a huge benefit of receiving my voice mails via email and read them during meetings where I cannot answer and return an answer via email.
Thanks!
I've got mine set up that way since they made it free months ago. I still had a touch pro back then.
Works great.
Edit : Google had instructions on how to do it via phone. Press a few buttons.
I'm not going to quote something I'm not 100% sure of. Go to sprints site and search conditional call forwarding. Then look up your plan and see what it says about call forwarding and fees.
I have the simply everything plan so both conditional and unconditional call forwarding are included. I "think" some thing like everything data with mobile to mobile free calling, might have free conditional call forwarding. That's what you're talking about. Go check and make sure though. One of those there's a 20 cents a minute charge, so make sure.
Search a lot on google voice help. Calling someone that has free mobile to mobile, it's considered a landline call and not mobile. That means out would go against their minutes. Like I said, go research it yourself.
I went so far as to change my sprint number and not giver that out to anyone. I only give out my google voice number. The reason behind that is I want to take full advantage off all the features that gv had to offer. If you use your sprint number, you can only use gv for voicemail.
Go read up, that's what I did. Oh, btw, the transcription accuracy of your phones voice to text is noticeably better than google voice's voice to text. I like gv so far. I'm finding out new things it can do just about every day!

I reread your question. Conditional call forwarding is what you are talking about. You don't have to call sprint customer service for that. All you do to connect (after setting up the online end and phone end of settings and program) is *28xxxxxxxxxx from your sprint phone. The x's is your google voice number. To disable conditional call forwarding from your sprint number it's *38 call. Seriously though, you need to do the homework yourself because there's way too much info about it to answer in a forum reply.

I set that up last year on my sprint number, it's nice because even when my phone is off I still get voicemails that might come to my real phone number (I use my gvoice number for everything)
I've got Google Voice as my main number that I hand out to clients and co-workers, and everyone calls me on it. If I have no service, I'll almost always have a WiFi connection, and just have GVoice forward calls to my Sipgate number, which I have tied into Fring.
Free unlimited calls!
Now if only I'd stop using the damned Messaging app and do texting from GVoice instead, and if I could get Sprint's AnyMobile AnyTime to recognize Google Voice access numbers as cellphones...
EDIT: Here's the link for info on how to do conditional forwarding: Manage the Conditional Call Forward feature from your Sprint phone

Google Voice Help?

I'm thinking about signing up for Google Voice, but it's telling me I either can use my current number or get a Google number and I have no idea which to pick. My main interest is Google Voicemail where I get transcripts, etc... but I don' want to miss out on the features that you get if you use a full Google voice number, even if I don't use them immediately and only use them at some point down the road.
Can I get a GV number, have my busy and unanswered call get forward to Google (for free on Sprint), and have the ability to in the future use my GV number for the other features as well?
Thanks.
i have a gv number and i still get transcripts and such via email when i have voicemails on my regular number

So, I signup for GV and get the number, then call sprint (do I have to call them?) to setup a conditional forward of my number on Busy/Unanswered to my GV number.
Then when I'm using my phone, it's still using my normal Sprint number to dial and receive?
You don't need to call sprint at all. Signup for google voice. Confirm your cell number on google voice online. After everything is setup dial *28 then your gv number on your phone. All of your voicemails will go to google voice now. to deactivate it, dial *28 then gv phone number.
Really? Because when I told google voice to handle sprint voice mail during setup it told me that wasn't possible with sprint yet...

GV can handle your voicemails without having GV take over your phone. You lose virtual voicemail, but you gain transcribed voicemails and the ability to listen to them online.

no it works, that just means that you wont be able to 'listen' in on a phone call and be able to pick up when someone is leaving a voicemail aka screening
or like the previous user above me said.... virtual voicemail
google voice is bad ass, i really like it.
if the 'broke' people or the folks who always buy prepaid was smart...they would just buy an android phone outright on ebay, craigslist or something and get a google voice number
i mean free calls anywhere in the US and text messaging?
damn near free phone.
i use it when i call phones who dont share same carrier... or low on minutes or whatever, etc etc.
the blocking a number feature is bomb too!!! not to mention dedicated voicemail greetings for each user/number

[Q] Google Voice MMS for Verizon?

I know Google Voice for Sprint is now supporting MMS...is there somewhere that people have unleashed this same power on the Verizon network?
Thanks in advance!
I believe so. My girlfriend received an mms through her email when someone sent it to her google voice number.

I heard you had to have text to email turned on for that. Can anyone confirm this? I'd rather not have my mailbox receiving tons of emails just to receive a few MMS.
So no knowledge of a difference in the Sprint version of Google Voice that enables the MMS to come through?
Sort of how the Blackboard app is only for Sprint, but a change was made that enabled it on all carriers?
I received one the other day, it sends a text then emails the text/picture to you.
EDIT: Also, I dont have email or anything turned on, it just forwards the email to you since the app doesn't support it yet.

Any idea how long it took to receive it? I had a friend text me twice with pictures attached around 2.5 hours ago and still nothing in my google voice inbox, my Gmail, or my text messages

It doesn't matter if you are on Sprint... it matters if the picture sender is on Sprint.
You will only get the picture forwarded to your email if the picture sender is on Sprint, regardless of what you are on. So the person who sent kangxi's girlfriend a picture is on Sprint. Same with the person who sent VinceT3 a picture.
This is disappointing. I cannot abide paying for text and data plans. Maybe if I decide to move to VZW I will finally break down and get FB or Google+ and use those for "MMS" texts.
I know whenever I get a text via Google Voice it shows up in my Handcent SMS app. Do you want me to do some digging and see what my settings are? Or am I missing the point?
Edit: oh I see now, your talking about MMS not SMS, sorry I guess I can't read and comprehend right now. It must be getting late for me lol.

Not from the GV number. You could from the new reassigned VZW number.
well that sucks i was trying to avoid using any other kind of number..maybe i should reconsider keeping my old number
Rumor is they are working with Verizon on gv mms support but for now its only sprint as mentioned. The hack is indeed to fwd gv copies to email as a way to get the mms content.

One thing that needs to be mentioned about how Sprint and GV integrated is that you only have one number. I haven't heard about Sprint members getting MMS when they have a different GV number than their cell #. Remember how this works. If you have 2 numbers then you send and receive MMS from the actual carrier number. On Sprint once you "integrate" your Sprint number, there is only one number being shared. There is no forwarding from one number to another. So when someone sends a MMS it falls off GV and going right to the same number on the cell. I am pretty sure there is more to it. But in simple terms, there is only 1 number being shared on Sprint and GV. If that makes sense.

uh, it's one way but it does work with verizon.
you can get MMS (and it gets emailed), but not send. Not sure when the send parts coming but it's more people being sticklers for how they want to send it(who needs it as a text message, truly?)
You will only be able to "see" it as a fowarded email if it has been sent FROM a sprint subscriber. http://googlevoiceblog.blogspot.com/2011/10/first-steps-towards-mms-support.html And yes if you are on sprint yourself and have chosen to INTEGRATE your sprint and GV #, MMS are recieved like normal on your stock native messaging app, not in the GV app.

[Q] Straight Talk T Mobile and Google Voice "All-In"

Since the majority of my searches show that most are on the $30 T Mobile plan proper and can call to deactivate VM. I have a question for Straight Talk users with the T Mobile SIM:
I have read that the ATT SIM supports conditional call forwarding, however the T Mobile does not. What happens when you want to have GV handle your voicemail? According to Straight Talk FAQ:
Can I turn off the voice mail feature?
The voice mail feature cannot be turned off. If you do not want to use Voice Mail, please do not set it up.

Is that it -just don't set it up? GV will take it after so many rings? What about on busy?
Basically the instructions on the T-Mobile side were written on the inside of the pink dress worn by some chick named "Carly", which happens to be balled up on the floor next to me right now.
Google said they would dispatch a hot intern to handle the configuration on their side and create a custom voicemail message at my request.
Should be all set. YMMV.
I'm worried that not setting up the voicemail on the ST won't work since your callers will be redirected to "this person doesn't have voicemail setup blah blah". I'm still not sure that Tmobile ST will work for me since I depend on GV

Agreed, not sure what the process is at ST and I do have a SIM on standby, however I am running the T-Mobile proper ($30 plan as everyone) right now and my request to disable voicemail was immediately and courteously granted. NO ONE is getting this number anyhow, so I think it will work out in the long run. I'm jazzed about the game changing GV features.
Still exploring options on outbound calling via WiFi and network data while running around, however have set up a OBI100 adapter/DECT phone successfully with GV while at home. Great rig.
How to get Google Voicemail on StraightTalk (with T-Mobile SIM card)
I think I found the answer to this at: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1639804#post27208502
Angrymanhand's solution can also work to get Google Voice (GV) voicemail from Straight Talk if you are using their T-Mobile SIM card. For example, using the lovely cyanogenmod7 on my rooted old Motorola MB200, here are the steps I took:
I did not call customer service to get them to turn off my Straight Talk/ T-Mobile voicemail, since I don't think I'll need to.
In your cell phone (not GV)'s contacts list or address book, add a new contact with your Straight Talk/T-mobile mobile number (NOT your GV number).
While adding this new contact, select the Option to send your incoming calls for this contact straight to voicemail.
Call Settings > Voicemail Settings > Write down this number, and then change it to your new GV number.
I also UNchecked the LED voicemail notification box (so I won't even KNOW if my phone tries to tell me about Straight Talk/ T-Mobile voicemails).

[Q] Straight Talk w/ or w/o google voice?

So long story short had an Epic 4g Touch on Virgin Mobile's $25 plan but need unlimited minutes now so I switched to page plus 2 weeks ago in hopes of flashing my e4gt to page plus. But I missed the unlimited data so decided to go with a gsm gnex and straight talk. Already have the phone and sim should be here today or tomorrow and I will be porting my number over.
Question is should I just port my number to Google Voice to avoid this hassle in the future? Is GV reliable? I can still use the stock phone and messaging app right (CM10 is the OS ill be on)? Is there any way to get MMS, like MMS-to-Email on sprint? Anything else I should take into consideration?
So should I just port my number to straight talk or port it to google voice?
Thanks
I say google voice (and forward it to whatever number at the time). The tricky bit is that smses would come from your original number unless you send them with voice also.

I recently ported my number to Straight Talk and it was active in about 20 minutes. As long as you have all the information they need to port, it's extremely painless.

I use Google voice with its own number. I use the app. My Google number shows on text to them just fine. nobody had real number. I use groove ip to make calls thru voice. I set it up this way so that if gonna be late on Bill or whatever i still have"service" that people can call and text me with provided I'm in wifi. actually ran it this way for about a year without any service at all. . Just Google. Since everyone already had my Google i never worried about missing calls or text. If i left wifi zone Google stored all missed notifications so could retrieve once in wifi again. Ill promote.voice any day of the week.

Just set up a Google seperately. Give everyone that number. Once service is up and running forward calls from the Google to your number. Then will have service until they get it going and won't have to tell people to go back to old number. Will always have a phone too

Finally got my number ported to my at&t straight talk sim and all I have to say is damn this data is fast! 10x faster than my old virgin mobile trash. Even faster than my home DSL. Very happy now.
I think I'll hold off on Google voice for now though. My girl is always sending me picture messages.

Sprint + Google Voice => Straight Talk, now problems.
I had my Sprint number. When Google voice came out and Sprint allowed integration, I did that. Last week I ported my Sprint/GV number over to Straight Talk (after buying an HTC One X+).
I want to get text messages in GV, not the HTC messaging app. I want to make phone calls from my normal GV number, and when I get a voicemail, i want that to come through GV as well. Basically, I want GV to do what is was doing for me on Sprint, handling my voicemail and my texts (both sending and receiving).
Currently, when my wife calls/texts me (she is still on Sprint), GV takes the voicemail/text. Perfect! But when other people call my voicemail gives a message saying that I haven't set up my voicemail box yet (Straight talk seems to not do this very well), and text messages all go into the HTC messaging app. Sending messages from GV or HTC messenger both work fine.
Does anyone have any help for me? Do I need to switch my number with Straight Talk and just have my old number stored in GV, then do the forwarding thing? Can I do that with outgoing calls, so they appear to come from my "old" phone number? Any help you can provide would me most appreciated.

There's a spot in the GV settings to have your texts only appear in the GV app... or just remove notifications from the GV app and you're problem is solved (only using the HTC app then.)
You need a separate number on straight talk and then just forward your GV number to that one. (I believe that step needs to be done from a PC.) Once you've done that you can still make your calls using the GV app, just select it to be used for all calls.
About to make the plung to ST as well. Currently useing GV forwarding to a verizon number. The GV number is the only number used period, the veizon number is just a recptical for GV to rout to. I really miss the lack of mms and the txting over data sometimes isnt as reliable. Also really miss the mms and sms dedicated apps.
Is is possible to port your GV number to ST but not lose the GV service ?
I would love for my GV number to be the native number on my ST phone and enjoy all the sms mms and direct calls to that phone. But NOT lose the GV feature associated with that number. Not sure i can live with out the web interface on my desktop for checking voice mails and txt.
I know i can just forward to a new ST number but would love to only have one number for all communication as i would like to have mms back.

Matt, hopefully this reply won't be too late for it to help you. I've been recovering from surgery.
I actually have done this both ways now, so I think I can speak to various issues.
On My Phone:
I kept my main number with Google Voice and got a StraightTalk SIM with some other number. All of my calls, both incoming and outgoing, I route through GV (a simple setting in GV), and all my texts come through the GV app by default. I'm probably missing my MMS's, but that doesn't bother me as I only used to get 2-3 per year.
On My Wife's Phone:
She was much more concerned with GV's lack of text message threading, so we opted to port her Spring/GV number over to StraightTalk. Her voicemails go though ST, and cannot be transcribed. Her texts through her messenger app, and all her calls though ST. Basically she left GV. There is an option to still have GV try to grab your voicemails and transcribe them instead of going through ST, but ST does not support that feature, so it cannot be done.
Where you say "But NOT lose the GV feature associated with that number." I'm a bit confused. When I think of GV features, I think of text over data/from computer & voicemail recording, but you seem to imply there is some other I'm missing.
I hope this helps with your decision. Again, sorry about the delay in responding.

Thank you, actually about to activate tonight with a ST number and route through GV. As far as the GV features i was referring mainly to the web integration. Love being able to check my txt and VMs from a browser. I know there are some apps that allow such but i like the way GV does it. I knew what i wanted wasnt possible but i had hoped. I wanted to think that i could port my GV number to ST so that it would be the native and only number to the phone and still have GV work as it does now without sacrificing anything. I knew it wasn't a reasonable wish. Should things ever change i can always port my GV number out another day.
Thank you for the response

Matt, a quick update:
So there is a setting on the GV website that allows you to get your text messages through your phone's text message app, and a setting in the GV app that allows you to turn off GV notifications on your phone. Thus, you could conceivably use your phone as it was meant to be used (for SMS), and just keep the VM options enabled. I hadn't really known what that option did before, but it seems it may be helpful for you.
Also, if you found my posts helpful, please "thank" me. I'm pretty junior and I guess it would help me gain credibility in the forums.
