[Q] Unknown System App; malicious? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I just noticed this app (bottom icon with Japanese? writing) running as a system app. It has permission for accessing my contacts, user defined dictionary and full internet access. Does anyone know what it is?
I've disabled it for now.

Looks like it may be Chinese, which ROM was it with?

It's with AOKP Maguro Build Milestone 1 ROM and franco.Kernel Nightly 10

it may have to do with the japanese keyboard just search for OpenWnn.apk & PinyinIME.apk in /system/app and just delete them if you find either one

That's apart of Google. It is called Google Pinyin IME. It is not a suspicious app.
It's included with AOKP, so that's why it says romanbb.
Proof: https://market.android.com/details?...29nbGUuYW5kcm9pZC5pbnB1dG1ldGhvZC5waW55aW4iXQ..

Thanks. That's a relief.

Definitely. Kind of weird how roman included that with his ROM since majority of his users won't be needing it.
@PaulG1: thanks for mentioning OpenWnn.apk. I was looking how to remove that as I couldn't find the APK for it

How to change the user agent in stock browser???

I know there is a setting that says request desktop site but it want save the setting, is there a permanent way to change the user agent to desktop mode?

Looked through the stock browser and I don't see any settings allowing the user agent to be adjusted. Might have to make the adjustment thru smali/reversing the apk or in source code and compiling from AOSP.
Otherwise, as suggested above, 3rd party browsers might be more likely to allow this information to be changed.

In the broswer search field type in about:debug, hit enter. Go to settings>debug>UAString and choose Desktop
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
That's strange. In all the blurb leading up to the release it was said multiple times that there was an option to select Desktop view for sites, albeit without the ability to remember your preference.

There is an option. The OP wanted it to always request the desktop version for all websites instead of having to select it for each one.
about:debug isn't permanent, as said above. Whenever you're redirected to a mobile website hit the settings icon and there will be a request the full website option. Isn't the same as setting the UA string but gets you there.
So anybody find a *permanent* fix for this yet? With all due respect to devs, not really sure why all the time and effort is being put into ROMs, etc, when simple things like permanent UA string mods haven't been sorted out yet...
There's an app in the market based on the ics browser called "ics browser+" that has the option. Its the stock browser with more features

I sorted it two weeks ago.
I make no guarantee it works on:
OEM anything.
Pre 4.0.3 roms.
non Team BAMF roms. (That can be fixed by re-signing)

Did Google remove the press to hold and change keyboard input option? I keep having to go change it in settings and that's a bit of an annoyance. I like to change keyboards every so often.

When you bring up the keyboard, there is an icon on the top notification bar. Select from there.
Finally, some Swype action!

Okay, so that's what that was. Lol. I was becoming frustrated that the little icon was up there so I assumed it was Swype spamming me. Thanks a lot! I guess it doesn't show up until you have more than one keyboard available.

has anyone been able to download any language files?
it seems the download capability is broken. I couldn't download any language files or dragon feature.
p.s.
Downloading works but it just needs some time.
Downloading the additional languages seems a little buggy. Sometimes the option completely disappears from the menus( even whilst being connected to wifi the whole time). It's not a conclusive method of getting the menu option back but I think running the swype setup/installer app when swype is already installed seemed to bring it back for me. Then several times when opening the download languages menu it sat with the loading twirly for ages and ages.
Also when finally getting the list of languages and downloading my desired language, the downloading was fairly fast but installing took ages.
What was also funny was swype had defaulted to Spanish when I first downloaded it and I was wondering why it's predictions had become so seemingly odd....

You can't. It's the way you change keyboard in ICS (except stock keyboard which is long press space).
The norification will stay there unless Swype implements the ICS way to change keyboard.
I'm using Swype whole mounth. build that I found works perfectly in my g nexus.
I can give apk if somebody wants. Also it supports lots of languages.

and I don't have any keyboard icon at top bar. It works how it must (like in 2.3).
But there one BUT: it uses nuance dictation (or dragon) that's no t so cool as default goggle's

[Q] No personal dictionary after 4.0.4 update?

I just got the OTA update yesterday to Android 4.0.4. I know it was supposed to improve the ease of typing but it has actually made things a lot worse (for me, anyway). It seems like they changed the way the prediction works. Like "Im" always used to be automatically replaced with "I'm". Now it's not. Also, I can't find the personal dictionary anymore. Where did they hide it?
Did you check android keyboard settings?

Swype

Swype is not working on GN with 4.1.2 after the update to 1.3.
Is it just me or others are experiencing the same?
It's a known problem.
The solution so far is turn off any apps like lightflow in settings > accessibility.
Working for me just fine.

To fix it you need either go to the Settings / Accessibility - and then turn off all apps that is listed under Services (like LightFlow for example).
Or disable the stock Android Keyboard. Just go to the Apps / All / Android Keyboard - and disable it, also force stop it. Then it is important to restart your phone.
Now you will have Swype selected and working as you main keyboard.
I don't like any of the new themes, an improvement over the old ugly swype but I think I will stick with my old themed swype for now.
anyone has the old .apk version of Swype???

temporary fix....
- Settings > Apps > All
- Disable Android Keyboard
- Reboot phone
- Select Swype
In this manner I am currently able to run both Lightflow and Swype.

[MOD][APP] 4.2.2 NEXUS 4 | Exchange Email with Disabled Security Permissions

Exchange Email APKs for Nexus 4 4.2+ stock with security permissions disabled.
PLEASE READ THE FULL POST...ITS ONLY A FEW LINES!
Created using rustamabd's method, Full props to him.
Circumvents PIN AND Encryption requirements.
Created from stock and CM10.1 images, cannot confirm that it'll work on other ROMs.
UPDATEs:
5/8/13:
added CM10.1 compatible APKs
9/9/13:
New: Patched de-odexed STOCK 4.3 APKs added. Also, things were getting kind of busy, so I put the apks in a zip thats named per version, that was there's none of this renaming BS.
12/16/13:
Added CM10.2 compatible APKs
1/4/14
Added CM11 APKs
2/18/14
Added PA4 APKs
Tutorial:
Force Stop Email, and Clear Data.
Using Root Explorer (or something like it), go to /system/app and rename EmailGoogle and Exchange2Google apks and odex to EmailGoogle.apk.backup and Exchange2Google.apk.backup, etc (always important to have a backup that way you don't F everything up)
Download and unzip appropriate archive for your OS version
Move the files to /system/app
Set permissions to rw-r-r-
Reboot device
Note: You will have to allow activation additional security permissions when Email asks for it. But you should not be required to encrypt your device or set a PIN. Also, you will have to reload all your email info after this.
As always: for educational purposes only, can get you fired, jailed, tortured, etc. Use at your own discretion.
Can you explain what this does? A short description for nubs like me?

Basically stock email app may force you to set a security pin/pattern due to corporate security policies. This effectively makes any of your lock screen widgets, slider shortcuts unusable. This mod will allow you to bypass the exchange security requirement from exchange servers.
How is it different from this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1749921
This is a flashable zip, works flawlessly. No harm or hate intended btw, just wondering.

The difference is that this one works, lol.
The .apks in that zip are incompatible with the 4.2.2 stock. There are a lot of ways to skin a security permissions cat, so if that one works for you by all means...

Haven't tried it yet but has anyone noticed battery drain with this version? I stopped using the one in the other thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1749921) because it caused alot of wakelocks. Exchange Services became my 2nd highest battery drainer
Yeah I read about that on that forum. Supposedly it has to do with incomplete syncs with the exchange calendar. I never experienced the drain, but disabled exchange calendar sync since I don't use it that much anyways. My battery life has been reasonable, roughly 10 hours with moderate to heavy usage, 14-18 if I'm not on it a lot.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
The zip in the thread I posted works fine and does not have any extra wakelocks at all. Battery drain is normal.

Anybody else on 4.2.2 gets' the "Couldn't open connection to the server" with an Exchange account? I get that very frequently and sometimes it decides to work.

You have to clear your current exchange account and set it up again AFTER you have replaced the files from this thread and set the appropriate permissions. It works quite well, specially also because it ignores the need to encrypt the device. Suberrrr!

I did. I followed the instructions exactly. My issue is at the very end of email setup, it forces me to set a pin still.

Just tried this out today. The files worked great with PACman ROM. It asked for permission to become device administrator, and then to enforce security polices. I allowed both, but it actually didn't enforce any new security polices that I could tell. My email syncs now. Thanks!

Try redoing the steps.
1) system>apps>email and force Stop and Clear Data. Do the same for exchange if it's running.
2) replace EmailGoogle.apk and Exchange2Google.apk in /system/app with the attached files from the OP.
3) change permissions to rw-r-r
4) restart device
5) setup your email. It will ask to activate permissions like pin and encryption, but once you click activate, your email should work fine.
