Nexus rattling near camera - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hi all, I'm probably the only person with this problem, bought my Nexus 23rd December from a guy in Dublin who got it on upgrade, since I've bought it I've noticed that if I put the phone down at the back or just tap at the back cover near the camera lens that there's a slight rattling, as if something is loose. I'd rather not have to open the phone up, but I can't see anything loose with the naked eye, I think it has to be inside the phone somewhere.
If anyone has a similar encounter please let me know what you did to fix it. Phone is rooted and I really don't want to be sending it back somewhere for repair if it's something I can fix myself. Doesn't affect the use of the phone but it's annoying to have in such an expensive piece of kit!

It could just be the case is slightly off kilter. My phone use to have a creaking noise next to the camera but after I pulled off the door and and put it back the noise went away.

I've taken the case off lol, there is nothing else to take off without unscrewing stuff, I've taken battery and SIM card out, and I've tried tapping phone while holding in any parts that may be moveable, it's still there. Annoying the hell outta me!

It's the autofocus of the rear camera. Some are looser than others. Try tapping on the back of your device with different; distances in focus or while focussing.
Anyway, this is completely normal.

[Q] Vibrate Rattle?

Does anyone else hear or feel a rattle when the phone vibrates when they receive a text message or anything? I absolutely love the phone, but this tiny little quirk is driving me bat-**** crazy. If I have it in my pocket it rattles loud enough that I can actually hear it before I feel it. Easily described as a hollow rattle.
I was thinking of calling Expansys (I received it from someone who bought it there.) and seeing what they say, but I would probably have to ship it back to Europe for any type of Samsung warranty issues.
Let me know what you've experienced, if anything.
No one other than me has experienced this?
I hear the vibrate louder than I have on other phones but idk if its a rattle

Hmm. Anyone else?

My volume rocker is a little loose and it rattles.

I get it too, thought it was because id used volume+ app and had it too loud.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
there is no rattle on my phone.
I got the same...and its freakin irritating
Maybe its just an extra loud vibrate then.
Rattle
No Rattle here. I guess you can either:
- Send it back for warranty repair
- Take it apart, find the offending part and tighten things up yourself (risky)
- Live with it.
sorry. For such an expensive device, you'd hope these kind of problems wouldn't happen.
I got it just now after i dropped it not a cratch but this annoying rattle may be enough to bring back to verizon
Mine has slight movement in the volume rocker as well. But its made of plastic and is to be expected from me. Not nearly enough of an issue to irritate me and is a complete nonissue.
*Unless for your phone, when the phone rings and vibrates it goes crazy with the rattle, then i would understand

Here's an update guys...i sent mine to the service centre today and a genius very young chinese boy opened my phone and realised the vibrator was the problem and was not secured on the board well....he rectified it and now my phone's perfect again
Happens on the Nexus S and iPhone 4S. Just part of the motor. Maybe try to take it apart yourself and see what's up.

Yes- my device has just developed this problem after a month of use. I've registered with Samsung and am sending it for a repair tomorrow. I'm really hoping that Samsung don't take issue with the fact that I've rooted my device. I had my nexus one repaird by HTC once and they didn't have an issue with the rooting- so fingers crossed
Just as an update to anyone who is interested- Samsung marked my Galaxy Nexus as 'Repair Complete' and 'Delivery in Progress' on Friday so I'm hoping to receive it tomorrow at my work. Having been updated to this status I can only assume that they did not have a problem with the fact that it was rooted. Quite rightly too as it was a stark hardware issue, but still, it's nice not to have to worry about it!
I bought one GSM Unlocked from Amazon and it rattled like crazy if the phone was at a specific angle. So I returned it and got a new one...which rattles just a bit if I'm not holding it a certain way with my hand over the bottom right side of the phone. So essentially I just switched the vibrate off unless it is for a phone call. I'm over it. Everything else about the phone is perfect so I'm not taking any chances.

[Q] Is your front facing camera off-center?

Does anyone have to tilt their phone slightly to be centered on the front facing camera? When I have the phone face directly perpendicular to me my face is off-center...debating exchanging it.
You do realize the camera is placed to the side of the front speaker and not in the middle of the phone, right?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
Yes.... I do realize that.
The thunderbolt and iphone 4 I had previously used didn't have this issue. and they had an camera off-center to the right of the speaker. Meaning that they probably accounted for it with the placement of the camera sensor.
Mine doesn't show me perfectly straight on, if that's what you want to know, but i never gave it any thought until now so it's barely noticeable and not at all problematic for me. I don't think there's anything wrong with you device, maybe the device in general. But I suggest not giving a f*ck. Works for me.

You do realize that the front of the phone...AKA the glass...is curved right?! It's not flat so of course you have to tilt it.
I read the thread and just had to ask myself...REALLY!!!!????

Actually, like the Nexus S, the Galaxy Nexus, the screen it self is NOT curved. The screen itself is flat... and only the top/bottom edge of the glass is curved, BUT the camera inside it is not curved/pointing down, it's pointing straight, that's why you gotta tilt the phone all weird to get it right.
But either way, yes it's off.
All the Android phones I have with FFC have all been off.. a lot. Nexus S, Sensation 4G, Galaxy Nexus, Asus Transformer tablet. All of them. Some worse than others.
I have a work iPad2 and it's off too. I facetime with my friend and I have to tilt it in a weird angle to get my face to fill up the screen correctly.
It's not that big of an issue but since I hadn't seen the problem on the thunderbolt and iPhone 4 I felt it was an oversight to not account for it on such a high end device.

I bought mine from Bell Canada. So international version I believe it is. anyways...
Vertically: maybe a degree till backwards if I want my face 100% centered vertically.
Horizontally: my head is slightly to the left but the effect is only noticeable if I'm holding the phone so close to my face that people would be looking at nose hairs instead of me. If held out 1.2 - 1.5 feet away from my face (where I usually hold a phone when using it the effect is so slight as to be negligible.
Besides, the slight shaking of my hand (simply from shifting in my chair) hides any discrepancies. I had to test by setting the phone down on the table and looking down on it as if I was holding it in my hand to see anything at all.
I can't say for sure if some of you are experiencing a more drastic shift than I or not, but for having the camera in the upper right hand corner of the phone I don't see anything wrong with how it's taking pictures and video.
O.

Is your GN's back plate fit? Mine gives me "click click" sound :(

Just got a GN. Found the back plate is not fit.
When I push the region near the camera and flash of the plate, there is a "click click" sound. It is caused by the unfit plate. There are extra spaces between the back plate and the phone.
Anyone got the same problem?
Same thing here =] but a nice case would fix that problem

They all do this. And in real-world use you never hear this sound.
I can't get this issue. I'm pushing near the camera but its dead quiet and no movement. Super solid. Where do you guys have this noise?
Usually no noise. Many of us have a slight gap issue. It is nothing major at all. Just another case of everything is amazing nobody is happy.
bow chicka wow wow.
i have the same thing, i think its the autofocus mechanisme...i tested it holding my gnex with 2 fingers and slightly touching the screen and clickclack near camera....and ive seen in another topic that its thebauto focus mechanisme

Lol, I have that. Nothing that's gonna make me return the phone, though. I don't mind it.

Yes, its a minor issue. Caused by a small gap between the plate and the phone body.
I went to the shop and tried 3 phones. Same problem.
So, gave up.

Creaking phone?

So a few days ago I began to notice that the back of my phone is now creaking, I first heard it when i went to pick my phone up the other morning and it sounded like an old hardwood floor creaking sound, it's progressively gotten worse to where now when i hold my phone during a call if i shift my hand at all the person on the other line can hear it. I was wondering if anyone else had this problem. The creaking seems to be isolated to (if you're staring at the back of the phone) the left half of the phone just below the power button and stops creaking above the phone model number beneath the glass.

My phone rattles when a tap my fingers next to the lens or put the phone down. No creakng yet.

They have a similar thread on the international optimus g page with the same complaint. I wonder if the Nexus owners do to.
Edit: the Nexus has the same issue. Just Google nexus 4 and rattle. Seems pretty wide spread.

So this makes me curious as to what other defects its going to have, but I'm on to a different issue, phone dropped about 2" and the digitizer broke, so when my new screen comes in i will do a walk through tutorial on how to replace it... starting to wish i had gone with the GS3...
Mine is also doing that. Just started to notice it today. Kinda makes my opinion of the build quality a little less. But still love the phone. Minus the messaging bug. LOL.

If I use my shoulder to hold the phone to my ear I get a creaking sound too. That's the only time I've heard it though. I imagine it has to do with the glass back.
Here, too. It's the camera side, right below it, that creaks. Fortunately, it's only noticeable when I deliberately squeeze it.

solid here....this msg bug you guys are talking about, is it when your typing the sceen jumps and your back at the start of the msg?
Hey, so I just noticed that if I flip the phone over and orient it so the camera is on top, then it will creak when I push on the left side. You can also see the casing move in slightly. It's almost as if it's broken somewhere but you can't see any crack.
I thought the people at Best Buy had said the back was glass but it's looking more like cheap plastic at this point. Is it different on AT&T maybe?

I dropped mine from chest height and nothing happened to it. That really sucks for you. How much was the replacement screen?

The replacement screen was $130 went with 2 day shipping (Digitizer/LCD Assembly). Just the digitizer was only $60 but it's a good thing I went with the whole assembly because when i was trying to pull the glass out of the housing some of the shards came off by themselves, and revealed that LG "fusing" the glass to the lcd is literally glue covering the entire LCD making it damn near impossible to just replace the digitizer and make it look nice.
Also a few warnings to those disassembling their phones:
1) The battery isnt solid, more like cased in an extreemly soft metal so it will dent if not carefully removed (it's glued into the housing)
2) The chrome edge dent's very easily, have a small ding where i got impatient, TAKE YOUR TIME!
3) When removing the back cover don't cross over the volume rocker, power button, or USB port with the spudger. for the top of the back removal gently push the back cover forward dont try to shove your spudger in their, it wont work lol.
I'm going to be doing a full disassembly guide that's a lot easier to follow than the "engrish" version korea put out for us english speaking techs when my new roll of 3m tape comes in. =P
This cracking is caused by a small piece of sticky under the back cover you can either remove the sticky or ad some more this would prevent the cracking...
I posted a service guide here on XDA search my name for it... It will show how you can remove the back cover... just when taking it off remember the back can crack easy and the plastic can ding or dent rather easy and make sure you don't mess up the power button or the volume buttons

Bulk on the back of the tablet

The back of the tablet feels weird. It feels like something is sticking on and when I try I push it back it made a sound. It scared me cause I don't know if I broke anything. There's a few bumps on the back. This is so weird. Could this of been caused my magnets? And also parts of the back of the tablet feel emptier than other parts

Are the bumps you feel by any chance on the left hand side of the tablet near where it says Samsung if so yeah I have it too - I guess since it has components inside its expected LOL tbh I didn't notice this until you mentioned it and anyways stop pressing stuff haha.
The empty feeling is also normal, mine is mainly in the centre, all this is pretty normal. I picked my Note 10.1 up a few days ago and it creaked but I remember reading other people have said the same.
Which left? Like the left with the screen facing you or the back facing you. And also I tried pushing it and it made a loud bang sound. What if I broke some of the components in the tablet?

when the back facing you and why are you still pushing stuff LOL just leave it alone but I did push it just a little to test and it did make a clicking noise but nothing alarming, I'm not going to do anything to it now and just let it be.
If it runs fine and you don't notice any problems with it then its most likely fine.
Mine has those little bumps as well. You can actually see a slight deformation on the back panel when you hold it up in the right light. It's probably due to Samsung using too thin poly carbonate in the shell.

Mine's "lumpy" in places too. I thinks it's common based on what's beneath the back cover not being even. Get a Book Cover and the problem goes away.
