[Q] Vibrate Rattle? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Does anyone else hear or feel a rattle when the phone vibrates when they receive a text message or anything? I absolutely love the phone, but this tiny little quirk is driving me bat-**** crazy. If I have it in my pocket it rattles loud enough that I can actually hear it before I feel it. Easily described as a hollow rattle.
I was thinking of calling Expansys (I received it from someone who bought it there.) and seeing what they say, but I would probably have to ship it back to Europe for any type of Samsung warranty issues.
Let me know what you've experienced, if anything.

No one other than me has experienced this?

I hear the vibrate louder than I have on other phones but idk if its a rattle

My volume rocker is a little loose and it rattles.

I get it too, thought it was because id used volume+ app and had it too loud.

there is no rattle on my phone.

I got the same...and its freakin irritating

Maybe its just an extra loud vibrate then.

Rattle
No Rattle here. I guess you can either:
- Send it back for warranty repair
- Take it apart, find the offending part and tighten things up yourself (risky)
- Live with it.
sorry. For such an expensive device, you'd hope these kind of problems wouldn't happen.

I got it just now after i dropped it not a cratch but this annoying rattle may be enough to bring back to verizon

Mine has slight movement in the volume rocker as well. But its made of plastic and is to be expected from me. Not nearly enough of an issue to irritate me and is a complete nonissue.
*Unless for your phone, when the phone rings and vibrates it goes crazy with the rattle, then i would understand

Here's an update guys...i sent mine to the service centre today and a genius very young chinese boy opened my phone and realised the vibrator was the problem and was not secured on the board well....he rectified it and now my phone's perfect again

Happens on the Nexus S and iPhone 4S. Just part of the motor. Maybe try to take it apart yourself and see what's up.

Yes- my device has just developed this problem after a month of use. I've registered with Samsung and am sending it for a repair tomorrow. I'm really hoping that Samsung don't take issue with the fact that I've rooted my device. I had my nexus one repaird by HTC once and they didn't have an issue with the rooting- so fingers crossed

Just as an update to anyone who is interested- Samsung marked my Galaxy Nexus as 'Repair Complete' and 'Delivery in Progress' on Friday so I'm hoping to receive it tomorrow at my work. Having been updated to this status I can only assume that they did not have a problem with the fact that it was rooted. Quite rightly too as it was a stark hardware issue, but still, it's nice not to have to worry about it!

I bought one GSM Unlocked from Amazon and it rattled like crazy if the phone was at a specific angle. So I returned it and got a new one...which rattles just a bit if I'm not holding it a certain way with my hand over the bottom right side of the phone. So essentially I just switched the vibrate off unless it is for a phone call. I'm over it. Everything else about the phone is perfect so I'm not taking any chances.

Weird vibrating sound from phone

well ive noticed since ive gotten my galaxy nexus and ive just ignored it however im not beginning to think i shouldn't and was wondering how common this is.
basically when the motor clicks in to vibrate the phone it sounds like something is loose in side causing a rattling sound with every vibration does anyone else have this ?, not sure if i should send it back to handtec or just try and get it repaired via samsung australia somehow cause they sell the galaxy nexus here now to.
I have the same thing, I think it's just a loud vibrate.

ive noticed tho if you squeeze the sides of the phone near the bottom then make the vibrate happen the noise isnt there, i also noticed under the battery cover there are some philips head screws i might try to tighten them maybe its a little loose however if this ends up being really common ill just live with it
I tried to tighten the screws...those little bastards are TIGHT! I contemplated taking her apart and checking the motor out. It does annoy me but I suppose I can live with it instead of voiding a $700 warranty.

There is no void sticker on the casing. Unless you tell them, the warranty is not void. I'm not responsible if it does though

Mine was loose and made noise until it went through a day of use. Now is solid as if it wasn't snapped into place all the way.

Mines loose. I can tap on it and hear it buzz a little. Power button is the same way. Once my finger grim builds up, this should go away. Its not loose loose, but not super tight. Could be tighter.

-Asus Transformer
Mine is loose and it rattles around when I type. I am going to try and get a replacement handset for a line in my screen and I hope I get a more solid rocker.

If it is rattling by just moving the phone and not physically touching the buttons then the unit is definitely defective.

I've heard that the LTE ones seem to have the loose rockers, while the GSM ones are solid. Has anyone else's broken outside that correlation?
Mine's loose. If I shake the phone I can hear it rattling, which is mildly annoying. I'm not sure if Verizon would accept that as a reason to exchange it (I've already had one return for a buzzing earpiece speaker). It's just one of those things that I'm not sure if I'll learn to ignore or let drive me insane.

I've got the GN LTE and got the loose volume rocker. Maybe you're on to something regarding it being a LTE specific issue. I'm doing an exchange through LetsTalk (may take a couple weeks since they are backordered) so I'm hoping the second batch of Nexi will not have this issue.
If not, an alternative solution is just to get a case (like the Diztronic TPU case) that completely covers the volume rocker.
i got the LTE nexus, volume rocker is loose. Drives me ****ing bonkers. i slapped on a case thinking it would help.. NOPE
I have the LTE and my volume rocker is loose as well.
I was concerned, so I went into the Verizon store to attempt a replacement. The salesperson returned with four brand new boxes, we took them all out, and they all had the same problem.
It annoys me as well. I almost considered changing to the Rezound because of these shockingly poor made buttons
I'm starting to consider taking the phone apart, ruining my warranty, and supergluing the damned thing down. It's maddening.
mine were really easy to push but now they seem a lot more solid like the power button. maybe breaking them in does help? i don't know. mine is gsm version.
I just got mine today (CDMA version) and the buttons are not loose on mine. My Bionic had loose buttons but the buttons on my Nexus are solid.
Went to my local verizon store to see if I could make an exchange, and I didn't even get passed the sign-in rep. As soon as I mentioned the rattling noise, another rep came over and said that all of the phones are doing it. He claimed that a tech told him it was the SIM card holder, but I corrected him and said it was the volume rocker. He shook my phone and then the display model and agreed, but wouldn't do an exchange. I'm gonna give a different store a try tomorrow and see if my luck's any better.
my 2nd galaxy s had loose volume rocker and my galaxy s2 also has loose volume rocker...My 1st galaxy s had a nice stiff no rattle rocker.

The rocker on my LTE nexus is rock solid. I highly recommend you take it back and get the phone replaced.
It can get worse with time. My Droid X developed a broken button after six months. I figure if you replace the phone now, your chance of getting a refurb is pretty low.
Damn that's a bummer. My GSM nexus has super solid volume rocker. Must be related to the increased thickness and some assembly defect perhaps?
100% Solid buttons on my Maguro.
I wish I could lock the volume so it won't turn up or down, I hit that mofo so much turning the phone off and on.

Vibrate rattle.

Hey guys! Just picked up my 900 today and I must admit, I'm loving it so far. Now, I know most of us have the scrolling lag (compared to the DVP or HD7) but does anyone have the vibration rattle? Anytime my phone vibrates, it rattles for the first part of the vibrate duration then stops. When vibration resumes, the rattle is there again but only for a brief moment. It's as if it rattles only when the motor first takes off. Not a really huge deal but it does get somewhat annoying at times... I've tried to take out he micro SIM tray because I thought this was the cause, but it isn't.
Mine does that too. From reviews I have read it is normal for the Lumia 900.

I think it's the camera button. Mine is loose and I can shake the phone close to me ear and hear it rattle. I took it into the AT&T store and all of them (display and employee phones) do it.

Definitely not the camera button for me. I downloaded a vibration app that allows you to access the vibration at the touch of a button and secured all buttons by putting my hand over them... it still rattled. My best guess would be a faulty motor or something very close to the motors location inside the phone. I will justify it by calling it a feature. Lol.
It's the camera
I'm pretty sure it's the camera lens rattling. It's not a feature, more of a design oversight. It's very annoying. But that's how all Lumia 900s are so I suppose you could say it's "normal" behavior.
Edit: BTW I forgot to mention that I exchanged my phone once thinking I just got a faulty phone but the replacement does the same.
Ditto. I wondered if someone would be posting about it.
The phone is two awesome for me to worry about it though

Same here, but I can hear something rattling back and forth if I shake it. I have to hold the phone close to my ear while shaking to really hear it though.
As long as it doesn't mean something will break, I'm fine with it.
Yes, I can confirm that my new Lumia 900 does exactly the same horrible rattling For what is worth, I think is much less noticeable if you use the Gel Case which I got for free from my AT&T store:

I sent myself an email to get a vibration, while holding all buttons stationary. The buzz, although lessened, is still evident. So it's something else.
I really do prefer the vibration from my Focus over the Lumia.
Nokia are pretty good at fixing hardware issues.. someone should bug them on their NokiaUSA fb page and also their twitter account. If they get enough complaints, hopefully they will do something about it.

I have the Black GEL TPU case sold at At&t that covers the entire phone like a glove. Vibration is still evident.
For all those that are trying to simulate vibration, go into the market and download "Vibemassage + Sound"
Once you start it up, pivot over to options and disable the "enable sound" slider then hit the main switch. If your phone is like mine, you'll notice that it rattles only when the vibrations starts.
Also, if you turn the phone around and hold it up to your ear and tap to the left of the camera, you will hear the rattle.
The vibrate is pretty annoying. Tempted to just turn it off completely.

Tried that. I kept missing notifications :/
Mine rattles when vibrating too. It's fairly loud and sounds cheap. It seems out of place on a device that otherwise feels solid and premium.
I grabbed an app (vibeMassage + Sound) to test the vibration and experimented with holding each of the buttons and removing the sim card. The rattle isn't coming from anything on the outside of the device, so something internally must be loose.
It honestly sounds like its coming from the headphone jack, when i squeeze that area it gets less noticeable

Volume Rocker or Power button WOBBLY

I have the white one
My volume rocker is wobbly and whenever my phone vibrates it has that sharp sound vibrating as well
As if theres a piece of plastic that is bouncing around inside the phone
But of course its just the volume rocker that is wobbling like mad whenever the phone vibrates
Anyone have this?
If I hold my finger to the volume rocker it doesnt make that nasty sound
I go into settings and I tap "vibration intensity option" and I tried selecting different vibration levels and I can definitely hear the difference
With the wobbly volume rocker
Anyone else?
The fascinate had this as well. It caused allot of concern when it was first released. They all held up like champs though. I think they are actually designed this way for longevity. I've had many Samsung phones, and never had any problems with their buttons. Try not to worry about it unless it starts to cause problems. Mine feel lose just like how you describe yours.
I would take it back for exchange if you still can. I just bought a tablet with the same problem and I am going to exchange it. For the money, that's not something you should have to deal with. My s3 definitely does not have the same problem.
Weirdly my S2 and S3 both have the sane issue. It has stopped bugging me though.

I have the exact same problem, went back to the store the day after, the rep said it isn't wobbly... and told me to test the demo ones and the demo devices also had the same volume rocker problem.
Now that I have it in a case, the weird sharp plastic moving up and down during vibrate is gone but it still bothers me to know that it's wobbly.
I tried returning it the guy said it's fine so I just lived with it.. my powerbutton isn't like this at all tho, very sturdy.
I've had three Galaxy S IIIs so far...
The power button was very loose/wobbly. AT&T replaced it for me.
The screen was separated from the bezel. They gave me a hard time about replacing this, saying that it's against policy to replace a phone multiple times unless it has a serious issue, but eventually replaced it. The power button was solid on this one.
This one has a looser power button than the first. It does not stick out as far as it did on either of the other two, and does not click when pressed. I also have to press it in just the right spot in order to get it to register. The AT&T store said that the button seemed to be working and they can't keep replacing it for "cosmetic issues."
On the one hand the button does work 90% of the time, it's just a little finicky. On the other hand, I don't expect this poor quality out of a premium device. I'm a little conflicted as to whether I should live with it our escalate to AT&T customer service.

I had a similar issue with Apple recently. My iPad 3's buttons were scratched and looked like someone tried to chew on it (mind you this is a replacement for a faulty iOS iPad 3 I had). Fortunately, Apple replaced it right away for its cosmetic issues.
My power button seems to have a similar issue to yours, in terms of not being as sturdy as the volume rockers, however it's bearable and hardly noticeable.
Given that I've heard so few horror stories about Android phones as opposed to iPhones, a not-so-sturdy power button isn't the end of the world!
However your provider or Samsung at the very least shouldn't be refusing to give out replacements for such issues...
The power button and the home button? Were really wobbly on my first gs3 (white) I exchanged it when the red one came out, this one I might say is perfect from cosmetic issues.

Well, the rep at the AT&T store said that her GS3 was like that as well, and even though I showed her that it was not like that on the floor model she insisted it was normal variation. She did offer to waive the restocking fee on a different phone if I was unhappy with it. I considered taking her up on it and going with the One X but the smaller, built-in battery and no removable storage just kills it. I'd say as long as the button keeps working I'm fine with it as-is. It actually makes it harder to accidentally turn on the phone, to be fair.

Creaking phone?

So a few days ago I began to notice that the back of my phone is now creaking, I first heard it when i went to pick my phone up the other morning and it sounded like an old hardwood floor creaking sound, it's progressively gotten worse to where now when i hold my phone during a call if i shift my hand at all the person on the other line can hear it. I was wondering if anyone else had this problem. The creaking seems to be isolated to (if you're staring at the back of the phone) the left half of the phone just below the power button and stops creaking above the phone model number beneath the glass.

So this makes me curious as to what other defects its going to have, but I'm on to a different issue, phone dropped about 2" and the digitizer broke, so when my new screen comes in i will do a walk through tutorial on how to replace it... starting to wish i had gone with the GS3...
Mine is also doing that. Just started to notice it today. Kinda makes my opinion of the build quality a little less. But still love the phone. Minus the messaging bug. LOL.

If I use my shoulder to hold the phone to my ear I get a creaking sound too. That's the only time I've heard it though. I imagine it has to do with the glass back.
Here, too. It's the camera side, right below it, that creaks. Fortunately, it's only noticeable when I deliberately squeeze it.

Hey, so I just noticed that if I flip the phone over and orient it so the camera is on top, then it will creak when I push on the left side. You can also see the casing move in slightly. It's almost as if it's broken somewhere but you can't see any crack.
I thought the people at Best Buy had said the back was glass but it's looking more like cheap plastic at this point. Is it different on AT&T maybe?

The replacement screen was $130 went with 2 day shipping (Digitizer/LCD Assembly). Just the digitizer was only $60 but it's a good thing I went with the whole assembly because when i was trying to pull the glass out of the housing some of the shards came off by themselves, and revealed that LG "fusing" the glass to the lcd is literally glue covering the entire LCD making it damn near impossible to just replace the digitizer and make it look nice.
Also a few warnings to those disassembling their phones:
1) The battery isnt solid, more like cased in an extreemly soft metal so it will dent if not carefully removed (it's glued into the housing)
2) The chrome edge dent's very easily, have a small ding where i got impatient, TAKE YOUR TIME!
3) When removing the back cover don't cross over the volume rocker, power button, or USB port with the spudger. for the top of the back removal gently push the back cover forward dont try to shove your spudger in their, it wont work lol.
I'm going to be doing a full disassembly guide that's a lot easier to follow than the "engrish" version korea put out for us english speaking techs when my new roll of 3m tape comes in. =P
This cracking is caused by a small piece of sticky under the back cover you can either remove the sticky or ad some more this would prevent the cracking...
I posted a service guide here on XDA search my name for it... It will show how you can remove the back cover... just when taking it off remember the back can crack easy and the plastic can ding or dent rather easy and make sure you don't mess up the power button or the volume buttons
