Serious stability issues unrooted Galaxy Nexus - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I've been having some pretty big issues with this phone ...it's unrooted running stock ITL41F still on 4.0.1 in the UK
Its been 7 days that I've owned this phone now. And few times it has just crashed. I could be in the middle of typing something, or anything else just coming out of an app, and the screen will freeze go black. And done! Crashed.
And crashed such that it doesn't start I have to take the battery out and reboot. It just dies. It happened a few times but I was setting my phone up so I let it go but now this is just downright annoying. It happens once in two days or so.
Second, and this is even worse. The phone is not dying but goes in a sort of coma. The screen becomes unresponsive.. and the keyboard doesn't work!! And in most apps only selective touch input works...let's say in whatsapp I was talking to a friend and it was working okay but suddenly it stopped accepting my input for a new mesg. And then I couldn't open another chat. Lots of things started being unresponsive...
I went to the home screen and even the Google search bar ..when I clicked on it the keyboard came up ( which it wasn't coming while middle of whatsapp chat) but it didn't accept any input.
I tool the battery out. Rebooted. And it worked initially but then after a few minutes. Exact same problem.
Rebooted again. But again same problem !! That was a bit of a horror really
Right now it seems to be accepting my text input but ... really don't know what the heck is going on for both these issues above. Any advise will be appreciated
Also yeah I do have quite a few apps installed on this device ... considering its stock ROM this should be safest against a vulnerability but any advise on if I should install one of those anti virus apps on it? Or any sorts of apps that I should avoid which cause such major stability issues with ur phone ??
Cheers
Dhruv

I've only experienced few of your issues.
Coma and reboot happened a couple of time while I was on 4.0.1.
But since getting 4.0.2 a few weeks ago those issues went away.

4.0.2 ftw.
My grandma beat me down and took my nexus. Sent from a jitterbug with beats by dre.

There are a few threads here with people experiencing similar problems. My screen goes black and also requires a battery pull.

4.0.3 ftw. Either flash a custom rom or get the 4 0.2 update to help with your problem.
Definitely a software issue that you're having.

I refuse to believe it is 4.0.1 it has been long delayed in the UK
That wouldn't be the case by Google if it was fixing such serious stability issues with the phone
Why do you come here doling out suggestions when you have no clue?
I am having the same problem again now everything is very slow and even the keyboard doesn't open in even Google search most functions unresponsive

And now most apps are force closing on me
IMDB and now xda app too. The phone is half dead the back buttons don't work either
This is the same thing that happened earlier in the day when I posted, and then the phone worked okay but now its back killing my phone
Anyone has any clue what could be going on ? Also this is the GSM version in the UK on 4.0.1 so only if you have a clue please respond else thank you very much

Now even settings page says its not responding
I can post on xda and it works but when I press back that doesnt.
Back doesn't work in any screens. The settings page not working was a classic screenshot will attach here from a PC.
Sorry for the continues rant folks. Just giving as much info as I can to those knowledgeable folks who might be able to help

The crashes arent stopping ..and the 4.0.3 isn't coming to the UK for some reason either ( which leads me to believe that it has some fixes for LTE which isn't available here anyway)
Aren't other users in the UK facing this crash problem - like once in 2 days or so??

Uninstall some of the apps you've downloaded that run in background. Battery Monitory was causing my phone to randomly reboot every other day or so. I uninstalled it and it was fine.
If that doesn't work, there's always Factory Reset.

Random reboots

I had the Photon so random reboots aren't to surprising to me. Hell even on my old T-Mobile htcs I flashed so much random reboots were the name of the game. But with my phone rebooting at least 6 times in the past 24 hours, I'm not too thrilled. It happens doing the most random tasks. Stumble upon, trying to open Gmail once, internet browsing. I'm wondering if this is because of root or just the phone. Anyone else experience this?

No random reboots here. Did you flash any kernels or are you stock?
I got my phone Friday 9-16, still 100% stock no root and I have not had one random reboot. If you are on stock without root you should return your phone, sounds like it is defective to me. When I saw random reboots in the title I thought I was in the Old Epic section
random reboot = probably a dud
manufacturers manufacture thousands of these devices a day, and flaws unfortunately occur

I am rooted. I first rooted with the Zedomax method, and then tried v5 of the ACS method two days ago, which is when I started getting the random reboots. I now switched to the Zedomax Overclocked Kernel (not using the overclock) to see if that fixes anything. If not maybe they'll release the stock kernel soon, and find a way to reset both flash counters.
Im completely stock and have had 2 reboots today. At first I thought maybe my hip case was pressing buttons but I had it out on my desk and then I hear it reboot. Im like WTF? I remember it did this on day one a couple of times and maybe a couple since then now I get 2 today damn near back to back. When the update comes out to fix known issues, hopefully this is one of them!
just got one today. Running Stock..
I am completely stock. No root. I've had 3 already.
I've reverted to the stock kernel with root and no reboots so far. I'm making sure to keep my number of open apps low though

I've had 2 random reboots tonight. One was while uploading photos to facebook, the other was while it was just sitting in my cupholder in the car. The cupholder one was weird though, the screen was on, and it made the reboot noise. It was like it lagged on it, but the phone was still semi usable for about a minute, then it finally shut off and came back. Another thing is random keyboard freezes, and again tonight, my settings menu wouldn't come up until after I restarted it.
So far in the week of having this phone it has rebooted twice

Well, it's been 4 days now without a reboot. I'm guessing stopping services makes this thing go crazy. I thought stopping maps, turning off background data, etc would make battery life better (like it did on the Epic)...well, it doesn't, and like I said earlier, freaks this thing out. So, don't stop anything, and it'll be fine.

Mine is going to be 1 week old tomorrow, and I am currently stock (so weird for me I root as soon as I get a device), but I honestly havent felt the need to root, and I also wanted to run a stock device for a while.
Anyhow, no problems here phone is running solid, no reboots or anything.
I had to do manually restart yesterday in order to get the camera working again. Went into the camera, and it was just a black screen with the controls around it. I love Android, but I hate that it isn't as stable as BBOS, or even iOS.

dissapointed!

Ok so heres my experience over the first week of having googles flagship phone...
1) When i first got the device home and turned it on It auto downloaded like 50 apps that i had installed on my sgs which i didnt want it to do...
2) when ever i scrolled through the app drawer the first 2 pages was fine but when i scrolled to the 3rd page the launcher would force close every time. A battery pull didnt fix the problem either... Luckily i got an update to 4.0.2 about 30 minutes after the device was on which got rid of that problem...
3) Now that im on 4.0.2 sometimes when im leaving the app drawer to go back to the homescreen the launcher will freeze for a few seconds between the zoom out transition so i see half of thr app drawer and half of the homescreen. This happens completely random and i cant reproduce it.
4) I have just been looking on the market and my screen just shut itself off... I couldnt turn the phone back on through the power button and i had to long press the power button to turn the phone back on. Basically the phone just died for no reason.
I love this phone and ICS but i just wish it would work how its supposed to.
Each of these little things is adding up and starting to ruin the experience.
What makes it worse is that i have seen other people with these same problems.
This is googles latest and greatest phone to the world to show what they can do and it just doesnt work.
I understand that ICS is brand new and that its the biggest rewrite to the OS since its birth but they shouldnt be releasing phones in this state.
If this continues i will be returning my device. I hope the next update brings some majour fixes.
And BTW im 100% stock.
Stock 4.0.2 GSM version have not experienced a single issue you have.
The one thing I can say is this is a developer phone and its just gonna have bugs. Its probably not what you want to hear but that's kinda how it is : /

Yeah i understand that.
When i first read about other people with random reboots and stuff i was like damn that sucks im glad that hasnt happened to me... But alas it has happened along with the other issues mentioned.
I might have to return it but even then they will probably just sen it away for 2 weeks and reflash it.
I just want it to work to its full potential.
As i said i know its the first versions of ICS and i expect a bit of problems until they iron out the creases but the list is just getting longer. Ive only had the phone like a week.
first off... put down ur phone...

look... no android device is perfect... you knew this buying the phone...
android is a work in progress... it is still one of the newest OS's out there.
of course ics has faults... its not near perfect yet... no worries... slowly it is going to get better and better...
look... unlock that bootloader of yours... and install a custom rom
most people and my self are using AOKP, install a custom kernal... Lean kernal and franco kernal are great choices...
custom roms usually preform better than stock...
relax... try it out...
im 100 percent sure this will fix your problems or any doubts u might have.
It sounds to me like the OP should just get rid of the Gnex and buy and iPhone. ICS is new! It will be buggy at first. Each update will bring a more stable and better all around experience. Like Radsolutionz said, unlock the bootloader, install Clockworkmod Recovery, and get to flashing a custom Rom. Most custom Roms are 4.0.3 which works better than 4.0.2. Just be patient my friend. It will get better as Google releases updates to ICS.
Yeah i know i know.
I just hope it gets better soon lolz.
Im trying to keep this one stock as long as possible.
Dont get me wrong im no stranger to flashing roms. I flashed hundreds on my sgs but i just want to keep this one stock for the first few months.
fingers crossed that the next update isnt too far away and this will fix these problems.

I would rather go back to a nokia 3210 then get an iphone!
As i said in the post above im no stranger to flashing roms and kernels and playing with the build props etc but im trying to avoid that for the time being.
I would just like to point out that #1 is not a problem at all, it is a feature all android phones have, when activating a new phone it automaticly syncs everything from the last phone to the new one, if u didn't want that to happen then u shouldn't have checked the box to restore all Google information or whatever the message is when u first setup the phone, should probably delete it...
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
#1 is your fault, when you sign into your Google account, it specifically asks you if you want to backup your data (app data, wifi passwords, and other settings) and/or Automatic restore apps and user data.
Don't give him such a hard time he loves his phone. I was disappointed to I also had random stuff happen but now its all settled down and battery life is great. Give the phone time to adjust and delete as many apps as you don't really need. It could be a bad app that's causing the problem.
If you still don't like it sell it and get something else .

i dont know but i just had to reply.

as said by other member, do that. OR go quickly to market > my apps, and press the 'X' to stop all progress. yeah it stops all.
2) when ever i scrolled through the app drawer the first 2 pages was fine but when i scrolled to the 3rd page the launcher would force close every time. A battery pull didnt fix the problem either... Luckily i got an update to 4.0.2 about 30 minutes after the device was on which got rid of that problem...
i'm sure you have this rare problem as others did not but glad it worked out.
3) Now that im on 4.0.2 sometimes when im leaving the app drawer to go back to the homescreen the launcher will freeze for a few seconds between the zoom out transition so i see half of thr app drawer and half of the homescreen. This happens completely random and i cant reproduce it.
same as number 2. if you got a slight lag opening the app drawer, its normal.
4) I have just been looking on the market and my screen just shut itself off... I couldnt turn the phone back on through the power button and i had to long press the power button to turn the phone back on. Basically the phone just died for no reason.
This is very normal in many smartphones. Even iphones have this. Had to do hard reboot for my gf's iphone 4 a few times since she buy it a year ago. so with ICS/Android or whatever still a new OS, its understandable. i dont know what OS you use on your PC/laptop, but if you use Windows, you know this is normal. hehe.
anyway, to my experience, I had this while on SGS2, and Desire while on Beta builds. Never had any trouble with stable builds with Nexus S, Gnex, SGS2, TF, Desire unless I played around with UV/OC. oh and while on AOKP Gnex, i had it once(just remembered now).
I think OP needs to update to 4.0.4. That solved allot of software issues for me. The whole thing with apps installing happens on any android phone if you select the option when setting up.
No no i mean im 99.9% sure i unchecked the box because i didnt want it to download all of my old apps, It downloaded superuser and titanium backup and adfree and all the rest that i didnt want it to lol.
maybe i didnt but im pretty sure i did.
As i said i LOVE this phone and im still happy with it despite these things and have no trouble keeping it for 2 years. Its just a bit dissapointing at the minute with the bugs.
I was just thinking maybe i got one of the "dodgy" devices and would be better of taking it back for a new one.
I will wait for the next update first and see if that fixes the problems.
I dont want to mess flashing custom kernels etc just to mess undoing it all.
by the sounds of it 4.0.3 and 4.0.4 are a big improvement over 4.0.2 so i look forward to get that little you have an update window on my phone
thanks for replies guys. Made me feel a little better
Don't worry, I unchecked the box too and it downloaded everything I had on my Xoom instead of my R2D2 D2. My gnex rebooted randomly and is nowhere near as stable as my Droid 1. And for all of you apologists exclaiming that this is a developer phone, well guess what? 6 weeks in, Googlerola decided "not anymore because CDMA is too hard."
Screw them. I'm going back to a phone that isn't so smart that making calls is beneath it when my contract is up and getting a decent laptop. It's a nice phone when it works but I didn't pay the development community to fix the gross design flaws and production oversights that the people I did give my money to caused to such a device with so much potential. I don't want have to rely on some kid in a basement somewhere to make my $600 phone work. Google/Samsung/Motorola should actually cut these modders a check for cleaning up their messes.
Sent from my Xoom using xda premium
As for 2 and 3, have you ever considered that your phone could be a lemon? I am running stock 4.0.1 and the worst I have experienced was random reboot once a week.
Hey.
I totally get where the OPs coming from. I've got multiple posts on issues I've had. Just some really annoying **** that has really made this a flaky experience. I love this phone just like you man and I'm trying sooo hard not to return it. I've had 3 replacements now and its been like a month. I'm probably just real picky but he's got some points there, why release this if its clearly not ready. I had a 3gs once and I really don't want to go back. The iPhone 4s combined with the latest ios is, and I even can't believe I (me) is saying this but, not toooo bad. I mean, you can actually change your SMS tone now!!! Nice work apple, although other phones have had that option standard for like a billion years! Haha. Anyway, going off track here... yeah dude, I'm not sure if the problems I'm having are just gremlins (which by forums they are) or I have a 4th faulty unit. My other 3 were for the most part probably fine, that's the problem, YOU DONT KNOW!
But by the sounds of it, and I'm sort if happy to hear it is that it is gremlins. I do also want a phone that just f'king works and does what its told. It this phone did that, it would probably be the best phone I've ever owned.

1.) YOU CHOSE to "backup/restore apps to/from Google's servers". It was a check box when setting up the phone.
2.) That is strange, never had this problem. And I didn't make it out the Verizon store w/o the 4.0.2 update so I really was never on anything before that.
3.) I also experience a little lag here and there with 4.0.2. Now that I'm on 4.0.4 I NEVER have a problem with it. Also, install spare parts, set screen transitions and other things like that to "fast" for a little added speed boost.
$.) Nobody likes the sleep of death, fortunately I haven't had this problem. Again, most of my time with this phone I have been on 4.0.4. I highly recommend you upgrade if possible.

So not true. I love my GNex, but the reboot issues are very annoying. And it's not because it's a 'developer phone'. If that's the case they need to stop plastering advertisements in major media outlets and TV commercials saying how great the phone is and instead putting disclaimers that it has annoying problems and 'we'll fix them when we get around to it'.
I love nexus phones and Android and I've stuck by them since the launch of the G1, but they still have problems and making excuses for them using these silly arguments is not how they should be addressed. I seriously hope they did not release this phone to the public knowing about these reboot issues. But it seems that way. Either that or the QA process is badly broken.

I don't understand all the "it's a developer phone" posts.
It is marketed as consumer device and for me, it's a very good consumer phone.
I may be totally lucky, but I never had a single issue with this phone so far.
My Desire HD used to have issues like freezes, gps problems etc. The GNEX does not. At least for me...
I agree that an Iphone is even a little more polished. But that doesn't mean you need to be an android developer or cook custom roms every day to like the GNEX.

Several issues with JB

Recently I bought myself a Galaxy Nexus after owning a Nexus S for 1,5 year.
I never had issues with the Nexus S (even with JB), however this seems a different story on the GNX.
My issues:
- Youtube doesn't play videos and crashes
- Gallery crashes when looking at videos. I get a black screen when playing a video but it doesn't start to play, when I press back the system doesn't react, pressing home returns me to the home screen.
- Face unlock doesn't start it's process and I'm redirected to enter my PIN
Any ideas? I noticed the factory JB 4.1.1 image is released, maybe I should place a clean image on my GNX?
Thanks for all comments!
Are you currently on a stock or custom ROM?
I have this problem here many and many times too with a stock rom.. Yesterday I reinstalled the factory ROM 4.1.1 but the problem persists, I think it's a bug in this version because in 4.0.4 doesn't have this problems..
I don't have this problem and I very much doubt many do. I suspect you may have a hardware problem. Probably faulty memory.

I don't think is a problem of faulty memory, it is difficult to reproduce this bug, you must open a video in the gallery or on youtube, watch the video and pause, after a few minutes reopen a video and do that sometimes and you have the problem ..
I've never had anything like this happen on jb.. .
I don't have this problem - did you try deleting the Youtube app and reinstalling it?
It might be worth trying to do a total hardware reset if you have a couple hours.

I've done it already, I've deleted the cache's app and the problem continues, it does not happen right the first time, occurs after about 10 times you watch a video and then watch again ..
It's a new phone. It came with ICS 4.0.1 which went to the OTA upgrade path: 4.0.2, 4.0.4 and then 4.1.1. So completely stock.
I also notice that the camera app doesn't come up (the same problem which does occur when unlocking with face unlock).
Pictures from the gallery show up without problems.
What are the best steps to have a complete hardware reset? Flashing the stock JB 4.1.1 factory image via fastboot?
If it's hardware defect, is there a offline diagnostic tool I can run on my GNX?
I appreciate all replies!
For me the only way to solve that is using the 4.0.4 stock ROM

Today I returned my Galaxy Nexus to the shop. I will get a new one as soon they're back on stock.
I returned to my Nexus S which has JB, unfortunately it seems JB is still not as stable as ICS. Had some Google Talk crashes today.
Never had a crash on my Nexus S on ICS.
Edit: Nevermind I didn't read your last post completely.
Glad to see you're getting a new one
I'm also waiting for a replacement for mines (kept crashing randomly). It will arrive on thursday.

I think I figured out how to solve these bugs, here they stopped to occur after disabling facial recognition, use another way to unlock your phone and make sure that they stopped
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
Probably the people who reported not having the bug doesn't use face recognition, I think this is the reason for very few people reporting this bug.

I've never had these issues and I used face recognition since the first day I got the phone.
Meanwhile I got a brand new Galaxy Nexus, however after one week of use the same problems returned!
I wonder if an app or something else is causing these problems.
I have not had these issues, you probably have a faulty phone.
It can't be that I have two times a faulty phone? First one was delivered with the Google ROM, the second one with the Samsung ROM which I changed immediately to the official yakyu ROM.

Weird issue: Root=Random Reboots (or possible radio issue)

I am not new to android by any means, but this weird issue has stumped me. When my GNex (toroplus) is stock unrooted with bootloader locked, the phone is very stable, no reboots. Once I unlock bootloader, root and install either CWM or TRWP, I will begin to have random reboots even on the stock rom/kernel. The reboots mostly happen when arriving back to my house after classes (very poor reception at my house if that matters), or just when I'm out and about with the phone in my pocket.
I've looked at the last_kmsg, and it shows "Boot info: Last reset was MPU Watchdog Timer reset". A google search gave me some direction that it is not a kernel issue, but I didn't find anything really definitive on what would cause it. I would love to get to the bottom of this as this issue is really bugging me. I've rooted with both the Nexus Root Toolkit by WugFresh (which worked great for my N7), and the Galaxy Nexus Toolkit by MSkip, both with the same result. Reboots. I've used both the FC12 radios and the FD02 radios, same result. I've tried with both CWM and TWRP recoveries, same result. If anybody has any input I would absolutely love to hear it. Thanks in advance
Well, it just happened while completely stock unrooted and locked. Guess I'll have to get a replacement. Anyone know if Sprint will replace it under warranty?

Your post count indicates you have at least been active in XDA for awhile- So that I don't sound condescending, I would do a fresh backup and wipe the phone completely and see what happens after re-setting it up (I wouldn't use TiBu or ROM Toolbox Pro to restore apps, just let em download from Google Play). If that corrects the issue, you just had a snag with an app somewhere or a system file, if not then you might have bad hardware, but unlikely since it worked before you were rooted. I've had this happen so many times, it usually is because of a dirty flash, restored apps or apps and data. Try using a different Custom Recovery as well. I prefer TWRP over CWM (much fewer problems with ICS and JB).
Forgot to say, that if you haven't upgraded the bootloader to JB bootloader, this causes problems too.

I am not new to android by any means, but this weird issue has stumped me. When my GNex (toroplus) is stock unrooted with bootloader locked, the phone is very stable, no reboots. Possibly similar issue here. Using toro and getting random reboots, typically in low signal situations. I work near the Canadian border where I'm often picking up Verizon international and flipping back to U.S. signal. Periodically the X boot animation shows and does a reboot. Usually associated with a data transfer of some type. I am not rooted and these began while locked, using stock mysid 4.1.1. Tried flashing radios, boot.img, and bootloader, and after 98 hours of uptime it rebooted. Planing to flash the system image next and see if there are some bad bits in there. If no success calling Verizon for a replacement since I'm not a full year into this phone.
Love to know if you find any other solutions for this.

I have been suspecting a radio issue too, because if I recall correctly the toro on ICS had issues with no reception/reboot. I ended up taking my phone to Sprint, and of course could not replicate the issue so they did the standard factory reset and update profile + prl (which of course I've done), and possibly a few other things. Now for some reason it has been up for about 20 hours in low/no signal situations and around town, where it would normally have rebooted at least once, usually a few times. I'm going to keep letting it ride stock and locked for today as well, and if it doesn't reboot today I will be tempted to say whatever they did fixed it (which is hard for me to admit).
Likely a system.img issue. I reflashed the stock system partition not once but three times this morning, doing a fastboot reboot (back to bootloader) between each flash. I no longer have the Google boot logo sitting there for several minutes before seeing the boot animation, and the total boot takes less than a minute. Something must have been retained during an OTA flash or a factory image flash. I'll see if it does any random reboots over the next several days, but thinking this might be the fix. System is a bit snappier also.

I stand corrected. Definitely a radio issue. All was well until we were in a few stores where there is no signal. Upon arrival back home I woke up the phone and then set it down to let the dogs in. Picked it up and there screen wouldn't turn on, though I could hear my words with friends tiles shuffling. Soon enough the X boot animation showed. Not a full reboot, as the uptime didn't change. Only been occurring since 4.1.1, so thinking 4.1.2 or better may have a fix. Toro and toro plus ate similar enough due to the hybrid CDMA/LTE configuration that I would expect this issue on both.
My biggest issue with this is the media scanner running down the battery at reboot.

The weird thing is that after the sprint store did what they did my phone was up for over 60 hours in no signal areas and traveling to a different state (where I would surely normally get a few reboots). I decided to root again, and after rooting I began to get the frequent reboots again. They always seem to happen when the phone is either in my pocket or when there is poor reception, or both. I've tried different roms, rooting processes, and it just seems while rooted, I am plagued with these reboots. Unfortunately as well, the sprint store wouldn't do anything for me unless they could recreate the issue in store

I've been getting full reboots, but I have also been experiencing this bug with the screen not being on but the phone is functioning, followed by a reboot. Definitely a weird issue. Do you happen to do any prl changing?

I haven't changed my prl (at least not manually), and never rooted. But now WiFi and location services may be somehow related. My wife's nexus did a soft reboot yesterday while she was taking a series of photos at home while connected to WiFi (we have Dropbox set to auto upload on WiFi). Most of my reboots happen shortly after arriving home and reconnecting to WiFi. And our home picks up LTE from a nearby locale due to our elevation-me thinks the location services are getting all screwed up and the default correction is to restart. In some ways I feel better knowing it's not a full reboot back top the Google boot screen, but would like to nail down the issue while waiting for the 4.1.2(or even 4.2) update to roll out.

I'm at my home now for thanksgiving break so I am going to unroot completely again and see if I get reboots in the basement where reception is non existent. If so I am going to try to get a replacement at my local store where they know me. It doesn't seem like a widespread issue, but it is odd that you get it too.

Well they were able to reproduce the issue at the sprint store so I'll be getting a replacement next week. I'm just hoping its not toro/toroplus issue in general, and I can finally be rid of these reboots

Glad they could reproduce the symptoms. Best of luck.

I'm having reboots while using Chrome. For example, if you go to the Play store and attempt to manipulate that navigation box in the upper right corner Chrome either crashes or causes the Nexus 7 to reboot.
Kitkat will fix it

Happening to mine too... Never rooted. 4.4 kitkat did NOT fix it ....
ASUS you suck. Google please use Samsung for your devices k thx..
I still have random reboots on my unmodified Nexus 7 2013. I've been running KitKat since it was OTA'd to the device a few weeks ago.
It is excellent when I'm in the middle of something and the screen freezes for about 4 seconds, then the device reboots.
EDIT: Hilarious. It randomly rebooted on its own just now. The device had been sitting unused for a number of minutes. Usually doesn't happen more than once/day. It just happened twice in 45 minutes. Usually it happens about once a week...
Anyone have any update/luck with solving it? I'm making a nandroid backup just in case the worst case is I need to have it sent back to the store for a replacement..
I posted this in another thread, with someone asking if a custom kernel will fix the reboot problem plaguing this otherwise superb device. It seems to hold its relevance here.

So, here's my experience with this. I bought my first nexus 7.2, at a best buy in north Dallas, in October. I experienced random reboots, right out of the box, about once a day, usually when I was browsing chrome, or when the tablet was sitting on the home screen without being touched. My gf bought a nexus 7.2 as well, at the same store in November, and she was not experiencing any random reboots, hers has always been stock, to this day (my suspicions began). I figured it was a software, or app problem, and waited for a fix from Google, or my app developers. Tried various custom Roms in the meantime (cm11, dirty unicorns, silmrom, and many more). I also tried various kernel's, in combination with said Roms (Franco, ElementalX, glitch, bulletproof). I had random reboots with all combinations of Roms and kernels. Did a factory data reset after every update from Google, and tried it for a week or so every time. Still experienced random reboots. I finally got fed up and took my table back in early January, to the same best buy in north Dallas. After receiving my second tablet, I kept it stock for a week, and then restored my preferred twrp backup, that I had taken with the rebooting tablet ( stock 4.4 krt16s, xposed framework, ElementalX 2.2 @1.7 and 450, with the motoX dalvik and bionic patches). With the new tablet, I have not experienced one random reboot, either with the stock software, or the custom software.
So, long story short, if your experiencing random reboots, if you have the ability to, I would take it back. Maybe you can fix it with software enhancements, but IMO it just shouldn't do this, stock or otherwise, and warrants a return.
Whatever you choose to do, I hope it works out for you, the reboots were personally driving me crazy, and I'm glad my second tablet doesn't reboot like its got a mind of its own.

With my personal experience, it definitely seems to be a hardware problem.
Thanks for reminding us. Seems to be a hardware problem. Mine still random reboots intermittently. Usually when it does, it will happen maybe 2-3x/day, then go a few days without happening at all. As is the case with me, it happens most often while sitting at the home screen, not in use. I've always been stock.

Same thing with me ... hate this problem, it make it unreliable especially for work and collecting data ...
Mine has been doing it lately also. I noticed it happen the first time about 2 weeks ago. It has done it on 2 different ROMS.
mine does it as well - as well as two other friends of mine who have the same exact models, all purchased at different times. it must be a device issue. there is no point in returning your device if its randomly restarting because youll just get another one that does the same exact thing.
however the longest uptime ive gotten so far was 200 hours with franco kernel r12 and then opened chrome and got a reboot.
also the same thing happened on my nexus 5 in the same day, maybe it was just an incident with google chrome. both devices rebooted.
but im having better luck without random reboots using a custom kernel (franco r12).
I turn off my device every night, so I do not have any random reboot issues. I think a simple restart every 2-3 days will fix this issue
You should always reboot a wireless device MINIMUM once a week to clear out useless data and avoid problems.
Nexus7 2013 Random Freeze ànd Reboot
Old thread still relevant. My Nexus 7 (2013) 6.0.1 randomly freezes and self reboots. Problem doesn't occur in Safe Mode. I don't know how to determine whether or which app(s) are causing the problem. I don't want to Reset until I've tried other ways to troubleshoot cause. Help welcome.
