Hey there all, I originally bought the good ol' Samsung Epic a few months ago with a bad ESN and a slightly cracked touch panel at the bottom. I have since activated on PagePlus (am looking for a replacement carrier, see page 2 of this thread if you would like to help with that ) which makes the ESN problem semi-moot for now, but I have noticed that what was only a minor crack on the "menu" key seems to have morphed into three hairline spiderweb cracks going up and across the lower half of the display. They're not too distracting, but it seems they are getting worse without "turbulence", and after my experience attempting to replace the touchpanel with the same problem back on the HTC Diamond, I am now very very leary of screwing this up again (I tried peeling the touchpanel off the Diamond and discovered that it is stuck to the stupid screen so tightly that you destroy the screen by attempting to remove the touchpanel).
What I want to know is, has anyone tried this, and is it feasible to replace just the touchpanel without breaking the screen? And please, before you ask (because I've seen this in every other thread I've looked in), a warranty repair is not an option. One thing I had been reading about was that some Sprint stores had been doing a sale where it could be fixed for $35, I was wondering if that was still going on, but it's okay if it's not.
Thanks in advance.

There are youtube videos that make the process easier. The EASIEST way would be to replace the whole top half with this http://item.mobileweb.ebay.com/viewitem?itemId=370562568610&cmd=VIDESC&index=23&nav=SEARCH&nid=96831014597 and you don't have to de-attach your glass, just the back part to get to the flex cables. You might be able to get the sprint store to replace for $35 but not likely.

If you can point me to exactly where on YouTube it tells how, that would be ideal 'cuz I already searched but came up rather emptyhanded.
100+ dollars is quite a lot to pay for repairs on a machine I bought for fifty anyway. I'm thinking more in the five to ten dollar neighborhood.

You didn't buy it from Sprint, it's not activated on Sprint and it's got a bad ESN, so it's unlikely that a Sprint store would touch it (Bad ESNs often mean stolen, so taking it to Sprint might mean a big mess). Your best bet is to find a parts donor on EBAY or sell this as a parts donor. The 35 dollar thing isn't a sale, that's what Sprint charges for repairs on their phones in most cases.

This, plus we'll only work on phones that are activated.
Trying to remove the LCD from the glass is next to impossible; the samoled display is so thin and glued so tightly to the class that I've never been able to do it successfully. Your best bet is to just buy a whole screen unit as the previous posted mentioned. Replacing it is a cinch.

I've been dealing with the same situation on my wifes phone (cracked glass, not the ESN/unactivated issue). Bottom line, the YouTube link posted above is a very good tutorial on tearing down the Epic, and the vendor who posted it also sells the parts needed. What I've found, as others alluded to, is you basically need to replace the whole screen and digitizer in this situation, due to the SAMOLED LCD technology. something like a 120 dollar part from the vendor I mentioned.
this next part is moot for you because I also doubt Sprint will touch your phone without an account/activation etc., but...for those who are curious...
the best I could get from my local Sprint repair center the manager agreed to replace the screen (I do have the TEP plan btw) on my wifes phone in exchange for buying from them 100 bucks worth of accessories. Reason being, technically a broken screen is an insurance issue, something not due to hardware or software failure/malfunction, unlike the speaker/vibrator module that just went out on my own Epic and they replaced for free (would have been 35 bucks if I didn't have TEP). So instead of my paying my 100 dollar deductable on the insurance and getting a reman. phone, I can get my wifes phone fixed and get something for my 100 bucks. He called it "win-win". While that is true in one sense, it still kind of rubs me the wrong way. But what choice do I have? Fix it myself for more than the 100 dollar deductible, live with it, or buy 100 bucks in accessories from them? Ah yes, business is business I guess..
The epic is really tricky to only replace the TSP. Not impossible, but it has a ton of adhesive around the entire inner lip of the front housing, so like previously mentioned, a heat gun or blow dryer is absolutely required. A pry tool and a small Phillips screwdriver is also needed. As well as patience and care.

Exactly, a little known fact is we will repair or replace any phone (except for things that would normally have to go through the insurance company) for 35 without TEP.

Interesting. With shipping it comes out to about 45 or 46 dollars, which is just below the going rate on eBay. I was hoping to pay a little bit less, but I'll keep this one in mind.
It isn't actually an LCD though - it is just the SAMOLED mislabeled, right?

Depends.
If you have the insurance, you have a $100 deductible.
If not, you probably have to buy yourself a new phone.

Have your misses pay. Determine which screen you need, then look on ebay or elsewhere. I've read it's not that difficult to replace.
First of all, to buy the parts would be almost $100 anyway, so there's no point to investing the time to fix it yourself (except maybe to save a FEW bucks). Second of all, if you have the insurance, I'm pretty sure there's no deductible for replacing the screen. The $100 should be for a stolen/lost/water damaged phone, or basically anything that can't be fixed, in which case they simply replace it. The screen is replaceable, and thus should not have a deductible. At least that's the way my local Sprint store explained it. Go to a Sprint store and find out for yourself. You may be pleasantly surprised.
What parts are needed for screen replacement? The screen I found is only 45.
Also can you add insurance to your phone after it breaks as long as they don't know?

Are you sure about this I looked on Sprints site and they said you can get it within 30 days of purchasing your phone.
You have 30 days from the date you purchased the phone to apply for insurance. But FYI, if you dont have it now, dont add it then make a claim the next day. You need to wait at least a few weeks, or they will deny your claim.

That's the exactly point I was trying to make.
well there's a couple of things going on here
1) Yes, there is a $100 deductible if you have insurance. A couple of weeks ago it would've been fixed free of charge but, Sprint did a "revision" to the new TEP policy and they're no longer covered
2) It's about the same to fix the screen yourself and to have it replaced through insurance with deductible, give or take a couple of dollars.
3) You can add insurance after 30 days if you speak to a cool rep, and make the claim within days, again if you speak to a cool rep.
4) That sucks!!
So last night I dropped my launch day EVO and cracked it. Brought to independent store just now and they said they can't fix it. Told to go to corporate store or file insurance.
CS guy on phone with Sprint told me it wasn't physically possible to change screen...lying &*&^(*&.
I DO NOT WANT REFURB!! Just my screen fixed! Will the corporate store do this or will I get runaround again???
i took my phone to a corp store when it had white spots on the screen. in about 45 mins i had my phone back with a new screen and cover installed
Corp store will be the same unfortunately. Ill fix it if you're from south Texas

It's costing me $40 less than my deductible with Asurion and I also don't want a refurb nor do I want to start over with my phone. The digitizer comes with peelable tape and the adhesive already on it, so no mission there. If you feel like this is something you can do, then here's something to think about.

This is true...they won't do anything for me. I went to corporate store and they won't budge. I am really mad. Terrible (change in) policy for Sprint especially since I KNOW they were replacing screens not too long ago and I was told my screen could be replaced with TPE in the past. All of a sudden I can't.
I have apps in development/testing on my phone and I would really prefer not to have to switch phones. It seems so easy to just replace the freakin screen and that is what makes this so frustrating.
Thanks to the poster who posted the "do it yourself" route but I would prefer to not have to go through all that myself...I would prefer to spend that time developing apps and spending time with my family.
Instead it looks like I am going to have to pay $100 for a pos refurb that I will have to start all over on.
To the poster I am replying to...I have protected this thing from day one but accidents happen. Mine just happened 1 month too late apparently.

It is was very hard to get the screen to sit at the perfect height, it was to close to the LCD causing a water effect. also if you don't get it right the first time, the tape that is included, if you could call it that, is not reusable, since you already ought it for 35 or whatever you said theres no point in my advice now but for anyone in the future, find out what LCD you motherboard takes and save yourself a bunch if time and stress by just doing a LCD and digitizer together replacement. My two cents
You're pissed at Sprint because YOU broke YOUR screen? Hardly seems fair.
I posted this in another thread, I'll post it here too:
The $35 repair fee does cover exchanges or repairs without insurance. However, the policy was slightly modified as of Feb 1st. Any LCD/lens/digitizer with multiple cracks or a single crack longer than 1 inch is considered damaged beyond repair (DBR). An insurance claim would have to be filed. If the digitizer simply stops functioning, it can still be replaced under insurance or the $35 repair fee.
For those that would want to do the repair themselves, be warned. There are two different types of Evo screens. One made by Sharp and one made by AUO. They are not interchangeable.

The policy changed due to abuse. Customers were coming in for 3 and 4 screen replacements because they kept butterfingering their phones. It got so bad that Evo screens were backordered throughout the entire company at one point a few months ago.

No, what hardly seems fair is that when I got the TPE replacing the screen was INCLUDED IN THE AGREEMENT. On top of that people with the same plan same insurance same everything had their screen replaced FOR FREE just last month. But for some reason I have to submit a $100 claim and recieve a refurb. That is why I am pissed at Sprint not because I broke my phone. I admit it is my fault that I broke the screen but Sprint changed the rules in the middle of the game and Sprint is treating me different than other customers who pay and have the exact situation that I do. NOW THAT HARDLY SEEMS FAIR.
I would be willing to pay extra on top of the insurance and everything else I pay for to have the screen replaced but it is no longer possible to have the screen replaced NO MATTER WHAT.

I agree with this. I told them I would bring the parts in myself and they could charge me for labor and they said they were "not allowed" to touch my phone because it had physical damage......even if I wanted to pay for it.
I have been a proud owner of an Epic 4G Touch for months now. I love android and I have been around it for a while. Heck, I love my phone so much I wish it were a real boy! ;-)
Sadly, I have been one of the unfortunate few who has had the lines on the screen when waking the phone and now after 3 plus months the egg has finally hatched. Two days ago after turning on the screen to read a text message the lines went down across the phone lock screen one more time for a bit longer than usual this time. This time I noticed a huge difference in the resolution or better put in the darker hues of the phone's display. The richness in color has faded to what seems to be on par with an early capacitive screen.
The darks aren't as rich as before. The blues aren't as blue. I mean even the screen on my old Samsung Moment looks better and I definitely won't compare it to the Evo 4g . To add to this when swiping across homescreen the display flickers. This may be an isolated incident, but I just wanted to let those who have the lines down the screen when waking it to be weary. This could happen to you.
P.S. My eyes aren't playing tricks on me. I took it in for an inspection at a sprint service center and the rep confirmed the noticeable difference.
I have harvested plenty of screens at my store if you live in the DC area, I can change it for you.
Why did you make 2 identical threads?
Why not just take it back? It has only been out for a few months. Surely it has a 1 year warranty. I am sure if it broke they would replace it. I have insurance but I am usually the one that breaks the phones. They don't like 1000 degrees or getting drinched in water.
On another note, I dropped my old Erickson from Cingular 110 feet one time and the battery popped out. I put the battery back in and it worked perfectly. It didn't even get scratched bad. I wish I had it on film.
I apologize to anyone who I have offended by the dual post. It was not my intention. I had problems with the browser I was first using.
I am sending the phone back to Samsung. My gripe is that it could take as long as 17 days to get it back, as per their estimates. But better a phone in good condition than one that is about to kick the bucket. I am under warranty so I don't expect to pay for repairs.
I would call Sprint and see if you can add TEP to your line.

Because TEP is mostly a rip-off. This was a warranty issue, TEP would have been a waste of $100 deductible plus the monthly fee.
It will be covered under warranty.

A warranty repair in a store still costs $35 bucks without TEP.
I used an analogy while talking in a spec filled virtual world. I should have said that the normal resolution of the Epic Touch went from 800 x 480 to what I believe was more like 320 x 480. There was a huge leap in display resolution.
I am exchanging the phone at a sprint service and repair tomorrow at no cost to me. I originally did not have insurance, but I was allowed to add it; I knowing that it would come in handy in this situation.
*The funny thing is that after a week of use with the poor resolution, I lent the phone to my sister-in-law so that she could email herself some pictures using wifi and the screen went back to 800 x 480 after she was done with it.* I'm still exchanging it, I don't want the phone to go useless on me anytime soon.
Correct me if I am wrong but you only pay that 100 dollar deductible if you lose the phone. Repairs are free with the plan.
On my Epic mobile phone.

Electrical fault, defect whatever not at fault are covered by the plan according to the paperwork. Not sure on the warranty exchange thing with TEP.
However not all repairs are covered by that. Lost or stolen is one part but smashed screen is the same if you broke it you pay the deductible.
I am actually curious I heard someone recently say the deductable was raised to 125. But paperwork said 100 and everyone here says it too so i dunno.

Im still confused as the others were. The screen is 800 x 480 whats the title all about.

It is still not a resolution issue. If it were, everything on the screen would have became much larger then they already are. Just because the colors are off doesn't mean that the resolution changed. Bad analogy and the reason why people are confused by the title.

Check warranty before anything
Before anything I would high recommend going on to Samsung's website and see if you are still under warranty.
My phone was "broken" too and before I did anything I was lucky enough to still be under warranty.
Please check before making any purchases

I actually work for Samsung and set up warranty repairs for phones the phone is OOW by condition. there will be a charge to fix, which is right about $160 to repair. but it creates a 90 day warranty on the device.
you can call
1-888-987-HELP (4357)
or 1-800-SAMSUNG
located on Samsung website

Who's your carrier and did you buy insurance ? For 7 bucks a month T-mo will replace no matter what or how something happens to your phone, including loss, (or kids). Last I checked $130.00 deductible, but for a 500.00 phone I'd say worth it. Just be sure they don't try to palm off a refurbished phone to you.

LOL, my kids are the same way with my phones and tablet, but I let them play on carpet and in the car ONLY! If there's a chance, they already know the answer.
I'm in the same boat with a cracked screen, does anyone know if there is a resin of some kind. Also I just had this phone swaped out by tmobile and I might be able to play a warranty card. This would be a really good bussiness if someone could come up with a crack screen resin . I have serched and only found one you tube video, but they are not selling a product.
My carrier is Telus..But when I purchased the phone I didn't need insurance cause it was for me.
Then comes the new Samsung galaxy nexus so I got it and gave my son my s2x...1 week later he.drops it
I'm waiting for a few friends I have in China to see what they can do

I just recently cracked my screen on my phone and I had it replaced. I had hd2 before that and I dropped on the ground and I had it replaced. T-mobile works with Asurion. I'm sure Asurion will ask you for the deductable which is about 130 dollars so go ahead and give them a call. They send you another phone by next business day. Make sure you explicitly request a new phone. 866-268-7221. This is Asurions number for tmobile clients.

Do you remember where you got the part? I am having a hell of a time finding one. I am looking for the lcd and a screen replacement for a decent price. The only one I found was $130 on ebay.
They go for about $65 used, grade B-C. New ones are $100+-, MAKE SURE U ORDER THE RIGHT ONE! These phones can be completely taken apart and reassembled in less than a half hour. Any questions, hit me up.

Yeah, u can buy NEW, but as soon as u turn it on....ITS NOT NEW ANYMORE! A "fully working" used one is just as good, believe me, I fix about 6-8 phones a week for fun and also so my friends dont take their phones in to get fixed just to get taken for hundreds and hundreds of dollars when IT DOESN'T REALLY COST THAT MUCH TO FIX PHONES.

Used display
Some S2 used displays have a dead pixels or gray lines. Which is getting worse with the time. Mine looks like "zebra" especially in the cold weather. So better to invest in a new one. Ebay has it for about $100 now.
Just FYI.
A new screen is roughly $90-100 on Flebay. I won't be fixing the t989 I found in my Pile 'O Junk, as it still works fine. Could probably buy a whole new one for that price.
However, the LG E970 with the broken glass and digitizer is going to get a new display... for only $75.
I got 2 t989's with serial numbers about 200 apart, both had cracked screens, I bought a new screen for (at the time) $145, then id swap motherboards once in a while for kicks, then my buddy wanted to buy one so I put one together all complete, damn near brand new condition, and noticed when people called they couldnt hear us (him), like as if the mute was on. Also, I shot some video with the camera and was saying TEST TEST 123 and played it back and couldn't hear anything. Any suggestions?

Sadly i've noticed from my old vibrant that the gorilla glass is not what's it's made out to be... When you take your phone apart you'll see.. If you bend the glass it breaks with ease, and if you put pressure in one small area it's done for. I swear plexiglass is stronger than the ****.

I was afraid that this would happen to my phone so I bought a Ballistics case for it (since Otterbox decided NOT to make a grossly over-priced case for the T989). Anyway, I'm sorry this happened to you
I would scour ebay for parts or see if someone is selling a defunct t989 you could buy and scavenge the parts. You shouldn't have to pay more than $200 including shipping.

I use to have insurance. But after paying ten bucks a month for 22 months, plus the 100 deductible, that's outrageous for a refurbished device. They go for 200 on Craigslist in my area. Insurance is a rip off.. in my experience

Not really because you get warranty for life you can have as many exchange as you want even when you brick your phone plus it works for any phone that is or was used to your sim card so I think paying my end 5 bucks is well worth it.
And by the way you are right, if i ever crack my screen I prefer to get a new one. people the repair cell phone screens never leave as it used to be. you can tell a lot that the screen been replaced

Hahaha the only phone I got from a warranty exchange that was new from tmobile was when my sensation got a power button defect and tmobile gave me the amaze brand new in box as a warranty exchange. then a few days later i guess they figure about the glitch because the amaze was not long since it came out and took it off from their system as a alternative phone lol.
but guess what I'm kinda tik off from tmobile is that I called to change a plan for my sons phone and the rep could hear an echo so we ketp talking and she said that if I wanted a warranty exchange, my answer was there is no point on getting the same phone that my have the screen bleed or else cause of samsung defect and she had the guts to gave me these alternative phone that I was like omg I better stick to what i have.
1. HTC AMAZE 4G I already had it sold it for the sensation
2. Sidekick 4g
3. Nokia Lumia.
4. Samsung Galaxy S 4G.
5. HTC HD2
Phones that are not even compatible to the S2
Warranty exchange and insurance claim is different. You can exchange as many times as you like but you can only claim insurance twice in 365 days.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda app-developers app
The other difference with an insurance claim is you have to pay a deductable of about 130 per claim when you have the TMOBILE US insurance. I had the insurance on my last phone the HD2 and never used it. Have it on the SG2 as well. Have no idea what you get when you have to file a claim, lesser phone if the phone is discontinued or refurbished?
I had coverage on other phones with SquareTrade and their servce was great. Bought a used phone off eBay, put on the coverage. If something happens, they basically refund the cost for up to two years. Not considering the insurance is dirt cheap compared to the TMobile monthly cost.

Ouch! Well, if this will make it feel better, I've had worse:
Phone + Pavement + Bus # 85 = I'll leave the state of the phone to your imagination. I will, however, say that the SIM card inside was also dead.
And if that didn't make you feel better, I hope it at least made you laugh (I can tell you I wasn't laughing when I saw the result of this combo). That was expen$ive.
Ok, here's the deal: the glass on your phone is just that: glass. What makes it strong is that it's laminated: several layers of glass at tension against each other. You compromise one layer, the entire piece of glass is garbage, it cracks in a spiderweb pattern like what you see. So your glass is a goner.
What about the digitizer under it? Test it very carefully: touch everywhere on your screen and test if the phone will detect it. If not, your digitizer is gone too, you do need that $180 screen assembly. What about the LCD? Any dead pixels / lines / areas?
HOWEVER
If the LCD and the digitizer still work, there is some hope yet: your glass is broken, but your phone still works! What you need to do now is find a way to glue it together again. It will never be like new. It will never be strong again, and your phone will probably die a nasty screen death within a year or so, but that's a year you don't have to buy another phone. I think Walmart has some service to repair broken glass (at least here it does). If the digitizer works, that is. IF it works. And IF your LCD is not damaged. And IF that service is what it claims to be.
Don't expect miracles, your best case scenario is a phone with visual artifacts from the broken glass.
Damn ...
Heard they were now selling our phone for $299 brand new. Not sure how much truth there is to that since I'm in Canada but worth looking into.
