Removing touchwhiz? - Samsung Captivate Glide

Now that i am rooted, i would prefer to use ADW launcher, can i completely and safely remove touch whiz?

I wouldn't. Just check the box to use adw as default. If you remove TW and for some reason ADW freaks out and doesn't launch, you will be hosed without the stock launcher.

touchwiz isnt just a launcher, it is built into samsung android versions. best to just leave it.
you are free to install and use any other launcher you want.

You'd need to flash an aosp rom to get rid of it.

Why would you want to remove it? You can have both TW and ADW at the same time.
If it were possible to remove it, it would b recommended to keep TW as a backup launcher for in case things break..

there are no ASOP roms for captivate glide... there are no roms...
ASOP is complete source build android for a specific device. there is no ASOP built for glide at the moment.
as i said in my previous post TOUCHWIZ IS BUILT INTO the android system on samsung phones.
that is why you cant just delete touchwiz. the rest of the rom expects it to be there.

yeah...true tw is samsung's overlay of android...BUT you can remove tw LAUNCHER without an issue. i can't remember the last time i had it included in a rom...but it is a good idea to have a backup launcher incase your main launcher commits suicide. get a lite launcher like go, and paste it in /system/app then if adw launcher decides to be a jerkwad, you're still good, and twlauncherless

Alright. I'll leave it for now.

I would be somewhat interested in this as well (removing TouchWiz).
Although, my reasoning has to do with a post I read somewhere about using the MAP Bluetooth Profile while using TouchWiz, and it not working (for use with the Ford M$ SYNC system in my car).

I just had a thought, if i remove it and ADW goes down, couldn't i just log into market.android.com and install another?

Just a scenario I've experienced. When we first got custom roms for the regular captivate, they were Samsung Roms just tweaked a bit. First thing I did was install ADW and then with Tubu I froze the TWlauncher.
I can't remember if ADW crashed or what, but for some reason one day after a reboot, ADW wouldn't launch. When the phone came up I was stuck in an endless force close loop and had to flash back to stock.
Save yourself the trouble and leave it. You're not going to gain much by removing it.

what is the recomended launcher ?

Remove TouchWiz Safely
Yes, TouchWiz is needed for a lot of apps to work properly and even for the alternate Launcher to work properly, as well. But i am pretty sure its running on the background when switched to a different launcher.
This is what i did to save the memory that TouchWiz has been using.
**Note: Before you start, its highly recommended to install Root Explorer to make things easy.**
Move your alternate launcher to System/app/ (i am using ADW)
To do this:
In Root Explorer, copy the apk file you want to put in /system/app
Navigate to the /system/app directory
Tap the Mount R/W button on the top right
Tap Paste
Scroll down to the pasted apk, long press on it and select Permissions (you'll see 9 check boxes when you do this)
Check the Read and Write buttons for User, and only the Read boxes next to Group and Others, then tap OK (once you're done, the read/write permissions under the app name should be the same as all the other apps listed (rw-r--r--
You Must Reboot the phone now.
Now, you have 2 launchers in your system folder, which is kinda safe.
Then navigate to system/app/ and remove TouchWizManager.apk (i guess this is the apk name, but you can recognize it with the icon if you are using Root Explorer)
Please use Root Explorer since, i forgot the exact APK name, much easier to use than Terminal or ADB shell.
Reboot again.
Now, TouchWiz will not run in the background, but all the needed touchwiz files are intact for the phone to work properly.
Hope this helps.

Recommended by me: Go Launcher.
I've tried various launchers and this one is just the best. Loads of features and customization options and very stable.
There is also a new type of launcher called SweeterHome where it's possible, through hard work, to customize nearly every aspect of the Launcher, AppDrawer and so on. It also has loads of interesting themes made by creative developers.

The only problem with SweeterHome is it is no longer being developed. Great launcher, though.

[Q] Multiple launcher question

please forgive me if this sounds silly or has already been asked/answered. I have searched the forums but couldn't find anything related, maybe due to it being either a given or silly question.
What's the rule-of-thumb when it comes to running multiple launchers? If one is currently active, are the others running in the background? Should I be concerned with battery and memory resources?
I currently main Go Launcher EX, but have also purchased ADW Launcher EX (loved it on the Eris), and Launcher Pro Plus. All are installed... I switch between them occasionally, and tend to go back to Go Launcher EX.
Rom = Magnolia 1.3.2
no takers??
thanx anyway.
I'm not sure either, but I use titanium pro, and it lets you freeze the launchers or apps you aren't using, so they don't appear in the app drawer. When you want to use it again, just defrost it. Hope this helps.

Thanx for the advice! I'll use Bloat Freezer to disable the ones I'm not using!
I'm not positive but once you set one as your default launcher I'm pretty sure the others you have installed do not run in the background. So you shouldn't have to worry about battery life if you have more than 1 downloaded and installed. I am using Go EX now but I also have adw ex installed. Have you checked out the honeycomb theme for go launcher ex? I like it a lot.
I use LauncherPro and I know when I switch over to rosie every now and then, the HTC loading screen appears for a few seconds before showing my home screens, so it's not running in the background (at least not at any capacity worth noting). If you switch constantly without ever rebooting your phone it may be a different story.

awesome! Thanx for the replies! I've removed Launcher Pro and kept Go EX and ADW EX. At the moment, I haven't figured out how they're different, but like Go EX better because it doesn't do the 180 degree screen flip thingy. I remember ADW having an option of disabling that on my Eris, but I haven't been able to find it.
I am not familiar with Launcher.
If I have multiple launcher on my phone, do I able to switch between them from time to time?
Do I need root rights to do this?
I am using HTC sense and would like to try android default launcher or others.

Yup you can switch between them as often as you'd like no root permission are required.
Home switcher for froyo works great.

[Q] Default Launcher Setting not saved on Fresh EVO 4.3.1

I updated my EVO to Fresh EVO 4.3.1 everything went smooth but when I hit the home button it asks me to select launcher ( I have Go Launcher and Sense) I select Go Launcher and click on "use as default" but after a min or so the setting gets turned off and I'm prompt to pick launcher again when I press home. Anyone else having this issue?
I've never had this issue.....but I use AOSP ROMs so I don't know how that works with sense. For me, I download whatever launcher I want to use and then I install it into the ROM's default system app location. I then delete the launcher that was baked into the ROM and voila! I have my new launcher that is always set as the default. Like I said though, I don't really have much experience with sense ROMs so I do not know if this process is an option. If it is then I highly suggest it because it makes life so much easier.

Did what you said. I backed up Sense and then uninstalled it. Now Go is the only launcher available so by default it's the one I want.

[Q] How to change the middle apps button?

Hi all,
Is there any way to change the middle apps button in the bottom button bar of the launcher?
I really hate that cannot be changed while the other four buttons can.
Usually, I always put the Phone app in the middle.
Probably gonna have to wait till you can get a custom launcher to put on there.
My assumption is that they don't want people moving around the "app drawer" button for fear that they'll accidentally remove it completely and not be able to access the drawer again.
Good point, but at least give us a way to move it to other spot on the button bar.

I love the look of the stock launcher but also wanted to remove the bottom icons and also wanted to use an LCD Density of 240. Unfortunately, with the stock launcher, the workable space on each home screen reduces proportionally with the screen density. I am now using Launcher Pro and it looks brilliant with smooth widgets.
I have one question about ADW Ex launcher. How do you get rid of the bar at the top of the page? I can remove some icons from this "top bar" but I can't remove the whole thing.
I am using Launcher Pro on my Nexus S.
It is nice, but crashed occasionally.
The development seems dead ...
The ICS launcher is good enough, but somehow that restrictions are bad

I have been in that situation with ADW Launcher lol, that really panicked me but it was easily added back on to the launcher just like a short cut probably the same thing will be done for the next ADW launcher for ICS or maybe the CM9 one will be really customisable too
Not the easiest method.. but it works..
adb pull /system/app/Launcher2.apk Launcher2.apk
using 7zip extract - right click - extract to /Launcher2
inside /Launcher2 go to /res/drawable-xhdpi and modify "ic_allapps.png" and "ic_allapps_pressed.png" as required..
then back to Launcher2.apk - right click open archive - navigate to /res/drawable-xhdpi then drag in your modified files
adb remount - adb push your modified Launcher2.apk back to system directory (or use Root explorer)..
your phone will probably freeze and then reboot and you will see you rmodifed icons..
Yeah, that's for changing icon.
What we need is also changing the app.
Seriously though, Google must implement so it can be moved ... at least.

AppWidgetPicker 1.2.3 (Confirmed) Works on ICS

I have confirmed that AppWidgetPicker work on ICS on Galaxy Nexus. If you are using a third party launcher. You should use AppWidgetPicker to better organize your widgets.
APK Link below.
That is all...

Push APK to your /System/App directory. Give all R/W permissions.
Someone should modify this for stock launcher. I can buy a coffee/beer for anybody who does

+1
Will definitely donate if someone gets this working on the stock launcher
Android's permission system means that apps cannot normally bind widgets themselves. (This is part of the reason you sometimes see missing widgets when you restore a launcher or WidgetLocker from Titanium Backup or similar). Instead the method third-party-apps use is to call another app (AppWidgetPicker, or a replacement for it like this one) which DOES have the permission because it's a system app (hence the unusual install process for this replacement).
The stock launcher is also a system app, and does have the needed permission to bind widgets itself. It's built to ONLY bind itself, rather than use a third party app. This means that the AppWidgetPicker replacement cannot be modified to make it work, however the launcher itself could be.
Curious, what don't you guys like about the widgets-in-drawer? The grid view versus the list, the lack of grouping-by-app compared with boombuler's mod? Both?

Yeah the lack of grouping by app is the worst thing, because certain apps have dozens of widgets and it takes ages to find the one you want. The iPhone style page-by-page side scrolling doesn't help either. I actually like how we can see previews of the widgets but the navigation is a bit of a nightmare right now.

Oh dear, there's a long list of reasons:
1. I now have 5 pages of widgets!!
2. It's visually shocking because everything is a difference size
3. You don't consistently get a view of what widgets will look like
4. It takes longer to get to and then find a widget
Add and app with 20 widgets built in and you'll see. It sucks in my opinion. We need a list based picker for sure, ideally one with a preview mode.
Since you're here... any chance WL can have an option to hide the soft keys on the Nexus so it runs full screen? Also the 'recent apps' button isn't deactivated by WL so it still pops up...
Thanks, works great with the new Nova launcher

Question - Custom ROM

Hi All,
I'm pretty new to all this Android customization. I bought a Nexus 5X for development purposes, I already changed the Bootimg, which was nice and got the hang of that. With the custom ROM's I now found out how to remove the .apk's in the ROM to lighten it up.
Currently I've been experimenting with xTraFactory due to that it is light and removes alot.
Though I want to make it even lighter, Gapps that are in it, I want it all out, all of it. Calculator, other apps, just keeping the core functions of the device, phone, messages. and I have 2 apk's that I want installed a SIP client and a openVPN app.
The thing that annoys me the most is the Google search bar on the homescreen. I cannot seem to get it away. I've tried the SU Uninstaller thing, made the thing crash so I have to start over in recovery
Anyhow, do you guys have any tips for me on how to take this task on?
Much appreciated!

Only thing you can do is to use a different launcher. You can install nova launcher than use titanium backup to uninstall which ever launcher is installed. (Usually its Launcher3 on an AOSP ROM)
