Hi All,
I'm pretty new to all this Android customization. I bought a Nexus 5X for development purposes, I already changed the Bootimg, which was nice and got the hang of that. With the custom ROM's I now found out how to remove the .apk's in the ROM to lighten it up.
Currently I've been experimenting with xTraFactory due to that it is light and removes alot.
Though I want to make it even lighter, Gapps that are in it, I want it all out, all of it. Calculator, other apps, just keeping the core functions of the device, phone, messages. and I have 2 apk's that I want installed a SIP client and a openVPN app.
The thing that annoys me the most is the Google search bar on the homescreen. I cannot seem to get it away. I've tried the SU Uninstaller thing, made the thing crash so I have to start over in recovery
Anyhow, do you guys have any tips for me on how to take this task on?
Much appreciated!

Only thing you can do is to use a different launcher. You can install nova launcher than use titanium backup to uninstall which ever launcher is installed. (Usually its Launcher3 on an AOSP ROM)

So as I then understand, Nova Launcher would become the native launcher after that process?

Yes it would. Like you, I don't care to have the search bar on my home screen, so I use Apex launcher. Works very well!

For personal use I like the features of those launchers, but for this little project I am working on I need as little features as possible

So Apex is lighter than Nova? (and it removed searchbar and everything)

you can deactivate apps/bloatware on the system level and completely prevent them from running in the background or showing up in any appdrawer

Hey,
I found this video on youtube:
On the left it shows the Galaxy S without TouchWiz.
So it seems possible to disable TouchWiz.
Can you confirm that?
could that be one of the launchers installed?...looks nice though
I think like the poster of the video has written, it's the app LancherPro
thanks for confirming that u need to read up more.
Just an alternative launcher as ADW or LauncherPro...
Touchwiz is still probably running in processes...
oh thanks,
I havn't read the comments.

But will it disable touchwiz, or will that run in background and eat power from the battery, if so, it's no point running an extra UI on top of touchwiz.
for now, just remove all widgets from TW, and reduce all the screens available. Then run ADW or LP...the battery drain from TW is actually pretty negligible.
LauncherPro works great
I have installed LauncherPro. Works really great. I made it default application for home button and killed the default launcher service in the taskmanager. After rebooting all lag in opening applications was gone and the default launcher didn't started Now only LauncherPro working...
I'm expecting my phone tomorrow and I'd also like to get rid of the samsung interface. Launcherpro looks good. Does anyone know if Beautiful Widgets will work on this phone? (levelupstudio.com/widgets/weather)
Will you lose things like swipe and layar when you you install an app like that? And sorry for the noob questions, this is my first android phone.
Beautiful Widgets is running great on mine with launcherPro.

Then you need to get yourself a better task manager My recommendation would be an app called task killer.
Launcher Pro really is amazing.
Hmmm, and how to enable the TW Launcher again in case it's not automatically started after a reboot?

Thanks
I'm using LP and after i read this topic i went to
Setteing > Applications > Manager applications
then change the filter to all and scroll down to TwLancher
then u can Force close it BUT! i think this will effect other parts coz as we all know we use TW in the contacts list, call log and the dailer.
So after u close it u cant use this features like swipe to call or swipe to msg and i cant live without them , well thats wt happened with me, i swipe but it do nothing! and after i relaunch it it didnt work also so i restart my phone and its ky now
so if u use them "there r diffident dailers if u like to use" dont swich off ur TW launcher.
Now that i am rooted, i would prefer to use ADW launcher, can i completely and safely remove touch whiz?
I wouldn't. Just check the box to use adw as default. If you remove TW and for some reason ADW freaks out and doesn't launch, you will be hosed without the stock launcher.

touchwiz isnt just a launcher, it is built into samsung android versions. best to just leave it.
you are free to install and use any other launcher you want.
You'd need to flash an aosp rom to get rid of it.

Why would you want to remove it? You can have both TW and ADW at the same time.
If it were possible to remove it, it would b recommended to keep TW as a backup launcher for in case things break..

there are no ASOP roms for captivate glide... there are no roms...
ASOP is complete source build android for a specific device. there is no ASOP built for glide at the moment.
as i said in my previous post TOUCHWIZ IS BUILT INTO the android system on samsung phones.
that is why you cant just delete touchwiz. the rest of the rom expects it to be there.

yeah...true tw is samsung's overlay of android...BUT you can remove tw LAUNCHER without an issue. i can't remember the last time i had it included in a rom...but it is a good idea to have a backup launcher incase your main launcher commits suicide. get a lite launcher like go, and paste it in /system/app then if adw launcher decides to be a jerkwad, you're still good, and twlauncherless
Alright. I'll leave it for now.
I would be somewhat interested in this as well (removing TouchWiz).
Although, my reasoning has to do with a post I read somewhere about using the MAP Bluetooth Profile while using TouchWiz, and it not working (for use with the Ford M$ SYNC system in my car).
I just had a thought, if i remove it and ADW goes down, couldn't i just log into market.android.com and install another?

Just a scenario I've experienced. When we first got custom roms for the regular captivate, they were Samsung Roms just tweaked a bit. First thing I did was install ADW and then with Tubu I froze the TWlauncher.
I can't remember if ADW crashed or what, but for some reason one day after a reboot, ADW wouldn't launch. When the phone came up I was stuck in an endless force close loop and had to flash back to stock.
Save yourself the trouble and leave it. You're not going to gain much by removing it.

what is the recomended launcher ?
Remove TouchWiz Safely
Yes, TouchWiz is needed for a lot of apps to work properly and even for the alternate Launcher to work properly, as well. But i am pretty sure its running on the background when switched to a different launcher.
This is what i did to save the memory that TouchWiz has been using.
**Note: Before you start, its highly recommended to install Root Explorer to make things easy.**
Move your alternate launcher to System/app/ (i am using ADW)
To do this:
In Root Explorer, copy the apk file you want to put in /system/app
Navigate to the /system/app directory
Tap the Mount R/W button on the top right
Tap Paste
Scroll down to the pasted apk, long press on it and select Permissions (you'll see 9 check boxes when you do this)
Check the Read and Write buttons for User, and only the Read boxes next to Group and Others, then tap OK (once you're done, the read/write permissions under the app name should be the same as all the other apps listed (rw-r--r--
You Must Reboot the phone now.
Now, you have 2 launchers in your system folder, which is kinda safe.
Then navigate to system/app/ and remove TouchWizManager.apk (i guess this is the apk name, but you can recognize it with the icon if you are using Root Explorer)
Please use Root Explorer since, i forgot the exact APK name, much easier to use than Terminal or ADB shell.
Reboot again.
Now, TouchWiz will not run in the background, but all the needed touchwiz files are intact for the phone to work properly.
Hope this helps.

Recommended by me: Go Launcher.
I've tried various launchers and this one is just the best. Loads of features and customization options and very stable.
There is also a new type of launcher called SweeterHome where it's possible, through hard work, to customize nearly every aspect of the Launcher, AppDrawer and so on. It also has loads of interesting themes made by creative developers.

Got my Fire phone last week and I'm trying to add widgets with no success.
I'm on the latest Fire OS 4.6.1 (461013820), with google apps added successfully. I've tried Nova Launcher, Dodol Launcher, and Everything Me Launcher. Every time I try to drag a widget to the screen, nothing happens. I can add apps and short cuts using these launchers but not widgets. Anyone have any ideas as to what I need to do?
Thanks!
Only certain launchers display widgets. The ones you tried evidently don't. Cheetah, lucid, Zen amongst others do.

Same situation for me. I'm running the latest firmware and when I add a widget to the launchers listed above, (Nano (formerly Zen), Nova, etc), the launcher crashes and I'm taken to the Fire launcher.
That said, I just tried adding one to Google Now Launcher, and it worked fine... so I guess I'll use that for a while.

Anyone know if making something a system app can get Notifyer Unread Badge Count to work on Google Now Launcher? I tried moving Notifyer and Now Launcer to Priv-Apps but still won't update Notifyer icon widget.
Moving Nova to Priv-App totally fixed widgets and Badge Counts work but I just like Now Launcher so much...

Here it is I had one made up for my mod pack. There's a couple of other tweaks in it. Faster led blink rate and no screen on for plug and unplug of usb cable. Clear launcher data after swapping out apk. You'll need root. Use a root file browser. Then reboot. Then clear launcher data and reboot once more. After that you'll be good to go.

If you try out the Android O beta 4 from Google that just released, it has 4 icon mod display options baked in....

Try lawnchair launcher. Is the same pixel launcher with added feature. One of them is using ur own icon pack. Also found that using latest beta (which support weather). Is actually SMOOTHER than stock pixel launcher. The developer did some tweaking to eliminate any lag or stutter on scrolling or swiping to google now page.
I've never encountered any lag or stutter on the Pixel while running stock. The phone hardware and kernel have been optimized for performance. Are you running any mods on your phone?

Thanks for the tip. I use Nova, the problem doesn't necessarily lie with whether or not the launcher supports icon packs. It's more that most icon packs lack support for every single app I have installed, and in that case I want to fall back on the app's default icon. However even if you switch launchers, on the Pixel those icons still get turned into these ugly white circles which is dumb. I have no idea who in Google decided that it was A+ idea to force that on people without leaving in an option to disable it easily. I mean for example I use the Acorn icon pack cause it's pretty af, but it stopped updating about a year ago and doesn't cover many newer apps. I don't wanna stack icon packs when the default icon looks just fine when not in this weird rounded mode that's forced on my phone. It's bizarre that we have to decompile and manually modify a value of a system app just to get rid of a "feature" that's not even slightly polished but is forced on everyone who owns this phone.

I'm using Mate 10 pro right now and I've bought Nova a couple of years ago. Nova is the best launcher for me, but huawei luncher is not bad either. I've used it for a year now heavy modified and westernised. I'll publish my review after I get the Mate 20 x next week.
Neato. I used Nova since I got my Mate 9, but it sounds like only the Default will work on the new Chinese versions.
Are you getting the China version?
It's very functional, but relatively slow and laggy - that's my experience on both the P20 Pro and Honor Note 8.
The HN8 is my main phone. I'm using Trebuchet at the moment, which is immensely smoother and faster.
There shouldn't be a problem using 3rd party launchers after 9.12x.xxx updates, but currently you'll have to go the adb method of removing Huawei Home to force the OS to choose your already installed preference, as Huawei had removed the option to select another launcher as default after complaints about malware etc - after an outcry it's now going to be reverted.

The Huawei Mate 20x launcher is A-OK. It is not laggy or problematic. If you want to use a third party launcher prior to the Huawei home manager fix, use Twisted Home Manager and gestures only for navigation in both the launcher and phone.

What did work for me was deleting the Huawei Home using adb:
adb shell
pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.huawei.android.launcher
After that, the system used the other launcher available (Nova in my case).
The only downside is that the swipe up for home using gesture navigation doesn't work anymore. The nav bar though, works perfectly. It bothers me because on the Honor note 10, with previous EMUI, you could change the launcher and the gesture still worked.
Thanks to mudnightoil who pointed this out before in this same thread.

Got it. From typical computer window. While phone is up and running and after saying allow for the ADB connection on the phone. My hold up was changing USB from Charging to MTP and resetting/checking that USB is really set on.
Now I wish I could kill the repeated "remove the malicious (all non-China) apps prompt.
I like the standard launcher. Just wish the would fix it so the home screen would landscape like my M10 Pro does
I saw someone reported the default launcher could be staggerring, though I would like to share my input.
I have been using Samsung phone from Galaxy S5 and I have been turned the animations off in the Developers mode. I didn't see the difference turning them off nor the need of keeping them up. If you were willing to try without the animations for a few days, you probably will like it that way.

Same as in many, go to about phone and tap on the build 5 times. It shows up under abnout phone, but under ther bottom advanced drop down menu. (I don't know why it seems the most useful items are under the last entry on menus with a "v" indicator). It is often easier to just search from the top of settings.
