please forgive me if this sounds silly or has already been asked/answered. I have searched the forums but couldn't find anything related, maybe due to it being either a given or silly question.
What's the rule-of-thumb when it comes to running multiple launchers? If one is currently active, are the others running in the background? Should I be concerned with battery and memory resources?
I currently main Go Launcher EX, but have also purchased ADW Launcher EX (loved it on the Eris), and Launcher Pro Plus. All are installed... I switch between them occasionally, and tend to go back to Go Launcher EX.
Rom = Magnolia 1.3.2
no takers??
thanx anyway.
I'm not sure either, but I use titanium pro, and it lets you freeze the launchers or apps you aren't using, so they don't appear in the app drawer. When you want to use it again, just defrost it. Hope this helps.

Thanx for the advice! I'll use Bloat Freezer to disable the ones I'm not using!
I'm not positive but once you set one as your default launcher I'm pretty sure the others you have installed do not run in the background. So you shouldn't have to worry about battery life if you have more than 1 downloaded and installed. I am using Go EX now but I also have adw ex installed. Have you checked out the honeycomb theme for go launcher ex? I like it a lot.
I use LauncherPro and I know when I switch over to rosie every now and then, the HTC loading screen appears for a few seconds before showing my home screens, so it's not running in the background (at least not at any capacity worth noting). If you switch constantly without ever rebooting your phone it may be a different story.

I have 4 currently installed and notice no difference from when I first got my phone.

awesome! Thanx for the replies! I've removed Launcher Pro and kept Go EX and ADW EX. At the moment, I haven't figured out how they're different, but like Go EX better because it doesn't do the 180 degree screen flip thingy. I remember ADW having an option of disabling that on my Eris, but I haven't been able to find it.
I am not familiar with Launcher.
If I have multiple launcher on my phone, do I able to switch between them from time to time?
Do I need root rights to do this?
I am using HTC sense and would like to try android default launcher or others.

Yup you can switch between them as often as you'd like no root permission are required.
Home switcher for froyo works great.

I'm debating going to launcher pro but was wondering a little something.
If I just change my default launcher to launcher pro, is sense then disabled or do I have to remove all the sense widgets from my current sense setup first??
I'd like to leave my setup as is and change over to launcher pro, in case i decide to go back to sense.
Thanks all!!
I haven't used Launcher Pro, but have gotten quite familiar with ADW.Launcher. In my experience, you don't have to do anything to Sense when you start using an alternate launcher. If you clear the defaults for your alternate launcher, you can pop right back into Sense and still have everything just the way you left it.
well i was wondering if i set LP as default, can i delete htc sense from phone? like the dock
You don't have to do anything with Sense. You can switch back and forth between the two (download Home Switcher in the market to easily switch back and forth). The only thing is Sense widgets only work with Sense (you can't add the Friendstream widget to one of your screens when using Launcherpro). The dock you see with Sense is different than the dock in Launcherpro.
Yeah, used to go from one to the other when I first started dealing with the different launchers. Can still have your regular "Sense" setup and switch between your "ADW" launcher (or even LPro for that matter). Pretty handy and quick. Just hit the home button when not checked as default. If you need that home button to display all screens at once, there are swipe functions for that.

If you are rooted you can delete /system/app/rosie.apk, but it wouldn't really provide any benefit. It doesn't start automatically and take up ram or anything.
Defaults wiped
I have tried this on a couple roms so far, same problem.
I have Fresh Evo running currently, with Launcher Pro as my choice for daily use.
Before it was Baked Snack.
Every time I reboot, or change battery, etc, I have to go through the default choice again. It won't save. I've checked through applications and once they're set all looks fine. I do know how to set them that way as well.
But once the phone has been cycled, I have to give the choice again at start and when exiting gmail or the first app I exit.
Anyone else know of this? Fix? Ideas?
I don't think it's a rom issue, which would be a lot easier to get an answer for.
Thanks.
Hi All,
Ive been toying around with the launchers, and i think there real good, only thinng i cant get though, which i thought id ask on here to see if its me being dumb or just dont work.
When using a launcher, can you not use any of the HTC installed widgets? Like sense clock, or weather, i feel when i go to the launcher on my handset half of my widgets disappear, but when in stock home, they are all there...
Anyway i can work around this? I really want to use another launcher other than HTC stock, as i feel they are so much smarter, the only thing holding me back is these widgets issue.
The Launchers i have used are: Launcher Pro, Go Launcher, Zeam Launcher, and ADW Launcher. Any other launcher that might do the trick?
Thanks in Advanced.

I have kind of the same problem, when i`m using a launcher the mail box shortcut never refreshes the new mail indicator on any of the home screens that i`ve tried, and i`ve tried a lot. I would gladly pay for a home launcher that would make that part work !!!!
If anyone knows of one that actually does it please let me know !
Thanks.

hi guys,
since we are on the topic of launchers. i have a question for the experts here. I am also using DHD. I running LauncherPro. When I first installed it, i set it to default and everything works fine. I press the HOME button it just do what the HOME button suppose to do. I restart or reboot my phone, it just goes into LauncherPro. But after awhile, out of the blue i started having this problem. Everytime I press on the HOME button, my phone will ask me to choose between HTC Sense or LauncherPro. I will tick default and select LauncherPro. The the HOME button will work fine. But after awhile it will ask me to select between the 2 launchers again when i press on the HOME button. Same whenever i restart or reboot the phone.
Tried to clear the default setting in HTC sense but nothing for me to clear. Can be annoying because I really prefer the LauncherPro. Does anyone encounter the same problem as me? Any way to overcome this problem? And also pardon my long winded post.

Is it everytime you restart the phone? Or does it seemed to have had an update. Launcher Pro Plus is the 1 i actually use atm, and i make sure the remember choice thing is checked and never have the problem...
Did any of you notice that when LauncherPro (and possibly other alternate launchers) is active, Settings -> Personalize menu does not work? It just goes back to homescreen. I never noticed it until this morning.
I got a call right after booting my DHD and it rang with one of the default ringtones due to SD card not being mounted yet and my standard ringtone was on it. So I went to check if it was fine once the card was mounted and behold. Then I switched back to Sense and could access the screen.
Yes. It happens everytime I restart the phone. I not using launcher pro plus.

Just a question I'v been wondering. My friends on the Droid x2 with (gag) motoblur and I advised using The launchers like ADW. But doesnt that just run OVER motoblur and slow the system down? I guess I'd just like to be pointed in the direction of how this works so I can explain it to him and understand it myself. Thanks all!

Launchers just replace your home screen and you can customize animations, transitions and their speed, bounce etc. effects. I use ADW EX In my Rooted with Liberty ROM Droid 2 and never slow or crash my phone. is pretty cool if you want to customize your phone and make it unique theres a lot options and cool stuff
Hope this help and give you an Idea I know is not the best answer but I try to help
Launchers do not run over, but certain aspects of motoblur will still be there (pull down menu, maybe app drawer)
The home screen area will basically kick out motoblur if you use a different launcher, and if you kill *that* launcher then it will start up the motoblur launcher.
it just replaces your homescreen and app drawer
you will lose the ability to use some motorola widgets though.
i tend to swap homescreens alot, (i just like the nexus deck, yet can't seem to find a non-AOSP rom with that deck)
Another question which has been bugging me....do launchers take more battery to run? I mean, when you use a launcher, youre using 2 separate homescreens. So am I wrong in this thinking or correct?

No, not necessarily. The other one falls out of memory and usage. Unless you're bouncing back and forth between the two, there's no problem
-My life is a shooting range, people never change-
Thanks for the info on this. I had been wondering the same thing. I've always used Sense Roms, but was thinking about switching to ADW EX Launcher myself.
Now that i am rooted, i would prefer to use ADW launcher, can i completely and safely remove touch whiz?
I wouldn't. Just check the box to use adw as default. If you remove TW and for some reason ADW freaks out and doesn't launch, you will be hosed without the stock launcher.

touchwiz isnt just a launcher, it is built into samsung android versions. best to just leave it.
you are free to install and use any other launcher you want.
You'd need to flash an aosp rom to get rid of it.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus
Why would you want to remove it? You can have both TW and ADW at the same time.
If it were possible to remove it, it would b recommended to keep TW as a backup launcher for in case things break..

there are no ASOP roms for captivate glide... there are no roms...
ASOP is complete source build android for a specific device. there is no ASOP built for glide at the moment.
as i said in my previous post TOUCHWIZ IS BUILT INTO the android system on samsung phones.
that is why you cant just delete touchwiz. the rest of the rom expects it to be there.

yeah...true tw is samsung's overlay of android...BUT you can remove tw LAUNCHER without an issue. i can't remember the last time i had it included in a rom...but it is a good idea to have a backup launcher incase your main launcher commits suicide. get a lite launcher like go, and paste it in /system/app then if adw launcher decides to be a jerkwad, you're still good, and twlauncherless
Alright. I'll leave it for now.
I would be somewhat interested in this as well (removing TouchWiz).
Although, my reasoning has to do with a post I read somewhere about using the MAP Bluetooth Profile while using TouchWiz, and it not working (for use with the Ford M$ SYNC system in my car).
I just had a thought, if i remove it and ADW goes down, couldn't i just log into market.android.com and install another?

Just a scenario I've experienced. When we first got custom roms for the regular captivate, they were Samsung Roms just tweaked a bit. First thing I did was install ADW and then with Tubu I froze the TWlauncher.
I can't remember if ADW crashed or what, but for some reason one day after a reboot, ADW wouldn't launch. When the phone came up I was stuck in an endless force close loop and had to flash back to stock.
Save yourself the trouble and leave it. You're not going to gain much by removing it.

what is the recomended launcher ?
Remove TouchWiz Safely
Yes, TouchWiz is needed for a lot of apps to work properly and even for the alternate Launcher to work properly, as well. But i am pretty sure its running on the background when switched to a different launcher.
This is what i did to save the memory that TouchWiz has been using.
**Note: Before you start, its highly recommended to install Root Explorer to make things easy.**
Move your alternate launcher to System/app/ (i am using ADW)
To do this:
In Root Explorer, copy the apk file you want to put in /system/app
Navigate to the /system/app directory
Tap the Mount R/W button on the top right
Tap Paste
Scroll down to the pasted apk, long press on it and select Permissions (you'll see 9 check boxes when you do this)
Check the Read and Write buttons for User, and only the Read boxes next to Group and Others, then tap OK (once you're done, the read/write permissions under the app name should be the same as all the other apps listed (rw-r--r--
You Must Reboot the phone now.
Now, you have 2 launchers in your system folder, which is kinda safe.
Then navigate to system/app/ and remove TouchWizManager.apk (i guess this is the apk name, but you can recognize it with the icon if you are using Root Explorer)
Please use Root Explorer since, i forgot the exact APK name, much easier to use than Terminal or ADB shell.
Reboot again.
Now, TouchWiz will not run in the background, but all the needed touchwiz files are intact for the phone to work properly.
Hope this helps.

Recommended by me: Go Launcher.
I've tried various launchers and this one is just the best. Loads of features and customization options and very stable.
There is also a new type of launcher called SweeterHome where it's possible, through hard work, to customize nearly every aspect of the Launcher, AppDrawer and so on. It also has loads of interesting themes made by creative developers.

I clicked on adw ex and clicked "always" and it seems to work fine, but everytime i reboot my phone, it makes me choose a launcher. I thought it was the rom I was running at first, but now I've switched from paraKANGdroid to a stock based Jb rom and it is still doing it. Anyone have any idea what i can do to make it remember after a reboot?

TiBu can remove it...
Thanks for the help, but so far no luck. Nova isn't installed as a system app, i just didn't want to remove it because I'm still deciding between the two launchers. I've had. Multiple launchers in the past but never had an issue. I suppose I'll just remove one or both and see if it works, then try adding it back if i change my mind

Apparently it's something about ADW. When i removed nova and reset ADW as the default and rebooted it again asked me to choose a launcher. So i did the opposite and uninstalled adw and set nova as default. Rebooted and it went straight to nova. It's strange, i use ADW on my tablet and it doesn't do it
Clear the cache and data for ADW... I don't have much experience with ADW, but I've had as many as four launchers installed with no issues... You could freeze Nova...
