Alright, I noticed this the first day, but went on with the assumption that it's normal.
I need you to turn off your Desire HD, go to a quiet room (as quiet as possible, perhaps home, at night) and boot it up. You'll hear a strange noise... not too loud... not many seconds after the bootscreen has appeared. At least... you'll hear it, if this is normal, and not only MY device is affected.
There's also something awkward about the screen, when booting up. The image shifts a bit, like it's being distorted for a fraction of a second, then the screen goes brighter (or whiter? my bootscreen is the default one, but it has 3 skate droids at the bottom). If it happens, you can't miss it, given you're paying attention!
This is not occuring EVERY BOOT, but every boot out of 10, for example, it doesn't happen. Boot the device several times to see whether it is happening or not. PLEASE!
So... please put that to the test. I'm beginning to believe that my device is somewhat faulty or something (that, in addition to the battery suddenly aging) :/
can't test sound issue, but when that pic gets distorted, than it means it's starting to boot and it won't be stuck on boot.img

Oh, okay. Good to hear. That sound is occuring just after the... boot.
I was expecting it to be the boot, cause right after that distorsion, the white would get brighter, and... well, that sound...
This wasn't happening when I had the Desire. Or it could have been because I was having a similar stock splash screen, just that it was white text on dark background... But I also had the stock splash screen for a while, and I did not notice it happening. Also, no such sound back on the Desire...
Please test that for the sound, when you can!

Is "that sound" the sound of the vibration motor?

Now that you brought that up, it COULD be. I doubt it, since I don't find any purpose in this whatsoever (or the BIOS (bootloader) is testing every hardware piece...? In which case, I suspect the speaker, earpiece and camera + LED would be "lit" up, as well?).
So... you tested it and it's the same for you?

I got my hermes from my friend, (HTC X01HT), she didnt want it because she dropped it and the ringer didnt work. it had only gotten unplugged, so i opened it, plugged it in, and had an awesome phone.
I dont think this is normal, but from the time she gave it to me, the screen made an awful highpitched ringing noise, (very uni-directional, it was weird).
Anyways...
now, the screen is just white. for a little while i could get the screen back, just by opening and closing the slider and hitting the power button a couple times.
Sometimes the today would display, then it would jarble up a little bit then fade to white, but i cant even get it to do that anymore.
Anyone else seen this issue? i'd hate to get rid of a perfectly awesome phone.
Thanks!
(also, if someone could post a picture of the device locked screen, where you have to enter a PIN to use the phone, that would be great, im trying to get into the phone with activesync, but its locked, and i dont know where to push the buttons.)
thanks!

Looks like the screen is unplugged, really. Maybe you need to disassemble further, like http://www.pdacenter.ru/razborka/razbor_hermes/ shows?
keep in mind, it worked fine for almost three weeks before the screen issue started... but i will try that when i get my hands on a small flathead again.
There's a whitescreen & D-Pad failure issue that can be caused by many things, including DROPPING the phone.
I wrote a guide about it which seems to be quite successful for many people.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=321163
so after trying a hard-reset, (which somehow displayed on teh screen), and clicking no, i was able to get the screen back... only this time with the moved screen problem, wrapping around at the top about 1mm.... and the buttons didnt work.
i tried your guide, but now im stuck at the white screen again... :/

A few days ago I succesfully (at least I thought so..) flashed my Desire to Cyanogenmod 7 using Amon-ra and it worked perfectly, until today out of nowhere my screen is black with a couple of white lines from top to bottom. One minute it worked as normal, and a couple of minutes later when I pressed the top button to unlock it, the screen was all weird. The touch functions of the screen seem to work as normal, I can unlock the screen, shut it down, power it up, enter my pin etc (blindly) but I see only the vertical lines so it's hard to check what's going on. I do see that the lines "move" when something changes on the screen, like when I unlock it, I see that the screen does react on it, but only some lines appear, move or disappear. For the rest, the sound works as normal when I turn op the volume, as does the vibrating.
I have a PVT4 S-on (thats all I remember) if it makes any difference.
Picture is from a camera, not a screenshot. Looks a bit yellow or so but the background is black, and the lines are white.
Does anyone know what it caused and what I can do to fix it? Maybe reset it or reflash it someway?
Many thanks in advance!!
Where's the picture?
You might want to give HTC a ring.
Request from puntchiel, a picture of his mobile phone:

Hm I forgot the picture, my friend len posted a link for me, for Im not yet able to do that cauz Im a nub
Thx len!
Yeh, send it to HTC or your carrier. It looks so ****ed
Well, sending it back and profiting from my insurance is my last option cuz I wont have it back for at least a month. Does anyone know what it could have caused or what could be a way to solve this highly annoying thing? I can't imagine that it is a hardware problem that occured this sudden... And the screen is reacting to my input but it only shows the frikkin lines! So I hope that it is a software problem. I just have no idea how to solve it, so thats why I'm asking the pro's on this forum
And btw, if I'm sending it back I need to make sure that they don't find out of the custom software on my device. That leaves me only two options I quess, fixing it or completely smashing it... So if someone at least knows how to use a RUU or something via my PC (without having to use the screen of my desire), your help is very much appreciated!!!

Ohh yeah thats helpful; i am sure he did not think to contact htc himself
That picture recalls bad experience with my ex Nokia 5800xm. I had to replace display.
Maybe it is not same case but it looks same.
I have exactly the same problem, flashed cm7 on my desire a few months ago.
Worked all fine.
Then yesterday all of a sudden i had a black screen with white lines.
Maybe you, puntchiel, have found any sollution?
I'm sorry Hanswurst, I had my ensurance company pick up my device and they replaced the screen, so I asume it was a hardware problem. I wish I could help you buddy. Good luck with it!
Hi. I have, ofc, nokia lumia 900, and it was working fine for some time. But then screen decided to go black (first some stripes showed, and rest of the screen kind of faded out, but not all the way, then it went black. Everything else worked, touch, tones etc. Firstly, reset after some time worked, but only shportly, but after 2-3 tries, it didn't work as well. So I sent it to repair, and all they did was reinstall system and it worked again. For some time, maybe 2-3 months. then it went again. But this time service guy replaced screen, and it, again, worked fine. For maybe month. But recently when i lock the phone, i cant wake it up. Again, sounds, touch etc. works, but black screen. Although, this time it works fine while using phone, problem comes after locking phone and leaving it a bit. So reset firstly also worked, works until locking. I downloaded lumia recovery tool, and reverted it to 7.5...also worked after reinstalation, but after I locked it...well, same thing. So, anyway, anyone knows why this happens? Also, was previous screen broken? It worked fine awhile after reset...
Also, with this new screen my navigation keys light is a lot weaker, and works only on back and search, not in the midle... anyone knows what that might be? Screen problem?
And also there is onther issue (of course...). Sound from earpiece is distorted. It's loud enough, but if you turn it up, you cant really understand anything. When turned down, it's ok, but too low to actually hear much. On diagnostics, I can't hear anything when on testing audio loopback on earpiece, and when testing dtmf, sound is distorted again. On speaker and on headpones both work fine...no distortion, mic also fine.
So, any help?
Sorry that my first post is that long, and also for seeking help in first post...but, it is how it is
So i have my girlfriends m8 here, a golden one , and my gun metal m8. My problem is that the speakers sound completely different. The m8 of my GF has no bass at all, its actually a little louder on high frequencies, its squshing in my ears. But it sounds thinner and not so full as my m8 does. I dont know if there are different versions of m8's but she is all set up because she thinks my m8 sounds better.
I did take off the speaker-covers. I heated them up and slowly lifted them because i thought there is dust under the covers. But there is nothing. Everything clean.
So hers is sounding thinner and higher-pitched. And mine are rich full with more bass.
What do you guys think
Rma it if possible; oh wait you opened it?
Sent from my HTC One_M8 using Tapatalk
Well its very easy to take the speaker cover off. And trust me nobody would notice it. Besides that i took off just the bottom one.
I dont know, maybe i really should return it. Hell knows.
HOLY MOTHER OF GOD
I think i just found a pretty revolutionairy thing.
So this morning i thought it could be some software-issue and maybe i have to reboot the phone. i did that and nothing changed, still this squishy sound and with no bass. my girlfriend wen to work and came home in the evening when i again started to compare it to my m8. guess??? NOTHING, still sounding bad. As i compared it to some ACDC back in black suddenly the phone`s battery went against 1% and it shut down, i left it alone for a while. Then i hooked it to the charger waited until i coud boot again and GUESS WHAT??????
EVERYTHING is allright, the m8 is beautifully sounding right now just like my m8. so it seems to be some software-issue.
so there is this fast boot option in the battery options, which i think does not allow the phone to completely shut down, it just puts it somehow in a standby-mode to boot up very quickly afterwards. thats why even after rebooting the phone the issue was still there. just after it shut down completely and rebooted completely as the battery went against zero, the issue is gone.
this could be some interesting point for some guys who expierience crackling or squishy distorted sound on their m8. they should wait untill the phone shuts down by itself or turn down the fast-boot option or boot from the bootloader.
so my girlfriend is happy now, i am even happier that i dont have to send it to HTC :good::laugh:
Oh wow didn't see that coming. Glad you were able to fix it!

Were you "rebooting" by selected Power off (after holding power button), then power on again? If so, then yes the "Fast boot" option in settings is just a fake "sleep" mode, and doesn't flush memory, restart processes, etc. (does not allow a true reboot).
However, if you chose the Restart option (after holding the power button), this is in fact a try reboot, and not affected by the "Fast boot" setting. I know this for fact, as its often how I access bootloader (possible with "Fast boot" setting selected, while going to bootloader after "Power Off" does not work under this condition).
In any case, I agree with the above comment, this was not what I was expecting. Thanks for posting the update. Seems like maybe Boomsound process got stuck "off" or something like that?

yes exactly i just powered it off from the menu after holding the power button.
it really seems that the boomsound process got stuck or maybe somewhere where the audio.process is running something went wrong, because even the microfone is working better ( i can hear her louder and clearer now)
Ok - so some of you might remember my thread from a few weeks back.
I had an assortment of issues - notably a System 7 error when I tried to install CM11.
I read through some of the copious amount of threads on here, and found that Status 7 error may result from not having correct radio installed - or some other software component that is required for the installation to go through properly.
So - I thought - what about trying CM10 again, rather than CM11.
This time, it seems as if the ROM has installed fine.
No errors in installation log etc.
Booting the phone throws up a problem, and this makes me think there's a hardware issue.
Sometimes it will boot to the CM10 welcome screen -and hangs.
Sometimes it hangs on the HTC quietly brilliant screen.
Sometimes it hangs during the CM10 boot screen.
Sometimes the CM10 boot screen animation runs as though the screen were a CRT with a dodgy signal coming in from the aerial.
Once - it loaded to the welcome screen, crashed and the phone emitted a loud, very high pitched squeal, and wouldn't stop until it was switched off...
So - any ideas what could be the problem here?
Hardware? I could take a look inside it, if this thing is a lost cause otherwise...

Are people completely stumped with my device and what it's doing?
Is this thing just fit for the bin, or being ceremoniously destroyed with a mash hammer?

Ared you flash the boot.img from rom archive. Maybe the phone is to hot and reboot try cooling the phone while boot maybe faulty battery
Yeah I've flashed the boot.img from the ROM.
Ok - something interesting happened there just there.
It's not been switched on for a few days - booted up great - got to CM10 set up screen - clicked Great Britain English - and on next screen it froze - horizontal lines across the screen, and high pitched scratchy sound (sort of similar to dial up modem sound, only higher pitched).
Just tried to flash boot.img again, and erase cache - crashed on HTC screen.
When it's cool - the phone def seems to boot up better - gets to the CM10 welcome screen ok - but when I try to do anything it then crashes - those weird horizontal lines through the graphics.
The more times the phone is rebooted, the less likely it is to get to the CM10 screen and just hang on HTC screen.

Yeah - just tried all of this again - let it cool down - tried to boot it up - got to CM10 welcome screen -then got through to the 2nd screen where it came up with an error relating to the lack of SIM card.
And then a screwed up screen with that sort of white noise thing.
I then restarted - and each time it would proceed less and less - eventually just getting caught in a boot loop.
Curiously, the boot loop eventually kicks out and phone goes into recovery by itself?
Where do I go with this people?
Any ideas?
