Service issue - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I took my replacement phone into sprint today because the screen stopped working. They ended up putting the mother board from my new epic into my old epic they still had since it's screen still worked.
I had to take the phone into them rooted since I couldn't unroot it so my system updater was frozen. They ran some test on it and it failed them all. It was determined that my freezing system updater apk caused this. My phone number and msid were erased so they reactivated it. I was able to make a call while I was in the store. After I got home the phone works with my air rave but if I go outside I lose all signal. I also have only one to two bars when I'm sitting across the room from it.
I'm running sleeper rom 11 with shadow kennel 1.04.
I'm hoping some one will have some idea of what is going on. I can provide any other details if needed.

did you update the prl and profile and then turn it off then back on?

Odin back to stock ec05 and update to ei22 and reroot. This should get past the bugs they encountered.

What happen is if failed to update your prl and so forth when you froze the system updater so this will clear that and should give you back your connection.

I odined back to ec05 and rerooted with one click. Reflashed ei22 modem in cwm then my rom and kernel. Updated PRL and Profile successfully and rebooted. I got a 3g data connection back but signal strength is still weaker than before.
Could The antenna or something have gotten damaged when the tech repaired the phone or another software issue I can't come up with? Dialing *99 shows I'm connected to the air rave yet I can't get more than 2 bars even in the same room.
I'm also still curious if anyone knows anything about how the phone number and MSID would have gotten erased at the store.

Did they run an "rf transmit" test on it? All cellular radios have a frequency range like -100 - +500 for example. And if its anywhere outside that range, you will get that problem. That is caused from a damaged antenna.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium

Is that something I could run from my phone from a dialer code with my msl?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk

No..and if u haven't been taught how to do it, u can really do damage. U have to expose the board to do it.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium

Well I took it back today and it was the antenna. It failed all the tests for a reason after all. I don't blame him though I threw him for quite a loop when he couldn't update the prl or anything and I was in a hurry to leave.
This has been a funny experience overall. The tech and I got a good laugh out of my frankenphone. He had never had a phone come back within the 10 days they hold the broken phone and then have to give it back with the guts from the new one lol.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk

Actually, from my time as a Sprint Tech. You should blame him. It was directly his fault. He either damaged or reversed the antenna cable. But, all he would have to do is replace the speaker assembly, because the antenna is wrapped around it.

LOS, let's narrow it down

I am completely stock, haven't rooted, and have experienced the LOS issue. However, every time it has occurred, I will get service again automatically once I get into a more bars area. Do others with stock experience the same thing? Are the people flashing a custom kernel experiencing LOS but unable to get signal back automatically? And have to resort to a reboot? Perhaps this is the issue with custom kernels, they aren't able to get service back on once it is lost. Feedback, please...
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
Haven't had one all day, running the Starburst ROM.
I had a couple when using Zedos OC kernal, and one so far with Starburst using the stock kernal. None before root, but I know a few people that have had LOS completely stock. It's pretty puzzeling...
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
I am stock and have never had LOS knock on wood
I had 'em stock...I had em with a rooted kernel. I'm not stock rooted and I haven't had one in like a week or so.
My LOS issue appeared 1 time last week. Then 2 days after that I have been PLAGUED with the LOS issue. I took it to the Sprint store today and the technician said, "This is a known issue from Sprint and Samsung. There's no date on when it will be solved. The iPhone 5 comes out next week, just trade this phone in at BestBuy and get that." -_-
It always happens to me when network communication is happening (google voice sync, webpage load, music buffering, etc) and then a network switch occurs (wifi to 3g, 4g to 3g, etc).

You guys are missing the point. Does the signal come back for you automatically if you are stock? Because with a custom kernel the only way to get it back is restart the phone.

For me when I was stock it came back on its own(happened a lot). Rooted 4 days ago and only had 1 Los since then and had to restart to reconnect.

Previously I could get service back simply by toggling airplane mode. Was messing with my phone few days ago (kernels, roms, mods, etc) and now only way get out of LOS is a reboot. Yesterday this issue almost got me killed, literally. Was toggling all the switches I could find trying to get service back and while doing that I accidentally ran a red light and nearly totalled my and some chick's car... Next time I'll just reboot the dam phone, lol
I'm running Androids Erection Version 3.5, ZedomaxEpicTouchKernelStock, (I thought it was the overclocked kernel initially that was the issue), just happened to me twice today. The first time, the person I was on the phone with was able to call me back, even though when I tried calling them back first, I had the "Mobile network not available" message. This is getting frustrating... :'(

On stock, it happened to me just once and it would not come back until a reboot. (Even toggling airplane mode did not fix it.)
Happened to me a lot before when I was on zedo's earlier kernels, have since switched to stock kernel and Androids Erection. Still get LOS.. maybe not as often, but a few times a day at work (where reception constantly crosses from service to no-service areas).
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
Only experience for me was after root, it would hard lock out data/service. Did it 10+ times a day. Only way to get it back was a phone off/on cycle. Airplane mode did nothing.
Not the case for the past 2 weeks with a replacement phone and no root(knocks on wood).

LOL well now I have experienced my first two LOS being on stock no root. Im sure (however its because I'm at work and we have those buildings where only Verizon really can penetrate for signal). I only had to use airplane mode to get out though no reboot. Well, looks for me I actually need to root my phone tonight since I get very terrible service with drainage and Roam Control + 11115 prl was helping very much ( i had no LOS on that as well)
I was on stock rooted kernel and experienced LOS once/twice a day...my bars would switch to a circle with a line through it. Switched to Midnight's ROM and got LOS, but my bars DID NOT change...so I never knew I had lost service. The only way I would find out if is I tried to text/call someone...VERY FRUSTRATING, for sure.
on the latest starburst and im getting it a good 5 times a day.....when i was stock i never once got it
Here's my experience. Was on ZedoMAX'S KERNAL since V1. No significant LOS (maybe 2 or 3 during the 2 weeks). Then this past Friday, non-stop LOS while on V3. Switched to V4.1. LOS continued non-stop. Phone almost unusable. Wifi still worked great. Switch to stock kernel on Saturday afternoon. LOS continued unabated. Losing my mind slowly. This morning, switched back to V4.1 just for the heck of it. Not a single LOS all day.
NONE of it makes sense.

Well I had to call Sprint and the tech guy had to refresh my GPS from theyre side to my phone. They made me do a few dialer codes such as ##YOURMSLCODE# and re-enter my MSID. He asked my MSID, and on my phone it said 00000000..which was clearly wrong. So he made me re-enter it and then reboot. He did a lot of things on his end, that were notable on my side. Honestly, it's probably your hardware SOMETIMES but no one ever calls Sprint tech for this type of stuff.
Previously I tried GPS drivers, ##GPSCLRX#, reprovisioned my device, went to every modem/version out via ODIN. It was honestly Sprint who got me back and running. I really didn't want a refurb phone, so i had to work with them.

Has anyone ever seen/heard about this befor??

A few days ago I woke up and my phone was showing no signal. A circle Icon with a line threw it where the 3g icon usually is. Went to sprint alk they could say was "your missibg a file" phone was never rooted or anything. Its just took a crap. Here is pic. Im using a loaner for now. Samsung my best bet?

Should means there's no connection/reception to the tower. I get this when I'm underground in the subway.
And why does it say December 31?! Maybe the phone is defected.

No this post is not a fail, and yes there is a question hence the question marks!
If there is a low or no signal area that I'm in, I should at least roam right?
Well I DON'T which makes me believe that hardware is indeed failing.
Was looking for some insight on the situation not a bashing.
I guess I should of been more clear with the question,my bad, now can we move on with help possibly?
The phone is back on stock ma7 unrooted, the phone bounces to 4g to nothing but a circle with a slash through it.When the phone gets the circle with a slash there is no data or phone call capability, seems to bounce back forth every couple of minutes like somthing is turning off the modem.
Forgive me for being a noob and I hope that is a technical enough explination of what my problem is.
Ask around your neighborhood friends if they have horrible service if so change carriers if not take it in make sure you have screenshots of it happening so you wont have an issue replacing the phone.

Guys, there might be something to this. Think of the "bad apples" case.
My phone was rocking until I did the MC2 update. After that I stopped getting calls.
Updated profile, thought it was fixed. Next day find out the hard way it wasn't - almost with a side of divorce.
Spent the night trying to figure out what it was and best conclusion is something corrupted the EFS data.
Only true solution was to ##72786# and let it re-activate.
Even then I see it miss a call from time to time.
Don't think it's modem related, happened on MC2 and MA7.
Also know Billard412 had his EFS data hosed more than once with no explanation.

Now that you mention it I suppose that's what my issue was as well. I didn't even think about it that I had recently changed to Ma7(I attributed it to the LTE work they are doing all around my area, although it hasn't hit within 2-3miles of my place yet it is just on the out skirts of that) And I was getting chewed out constantly for not answering the call. Which to my knowledge had never happend

I just did the re-activate and will see tomorrow if it works.
Well after fighting with sprint for weeks they finally admitted that some early model note 2's have defective antennas and replaced mine with a new one free of charge
So if you have an early model original software LJC,I bought mine in january and are having problems like I did go there and state your case and hopefully you'll get yours replaced with a brand new one,not refurbished.
It is weird hearing my phone ring now, I almost thought it was on the radio!

Thank you guys for posting this! I have had terrible call reception as of late and data has been super spotty. I even flashed back to the MA7 radio at one point to see if it helped.
I did the HFA (Hands Free Activation) like 5x in the past 3 days. Still total crap. I did a speed test side by side with my wife's iPhone 5. She was getting 900kbps-1.1mbps, I was pulling 54kbps-65kbps. :/
So, I tried restoring just the efs backup from my prior older MA7 based nandroid. After reboot I was pulling 650kbps to 1mbps on my speed tests. I don't know if it's just a placebo, or if it helped etc. It seems to be making a difference so far though.

[Q] Epic in SUPER SLOW SLOW MODE. (kinda bricked)

Ok so a little after midnight i rebooted my phone cuz it was being flaky.
Then it got stuck on the Cyanogen SGS boot screen from PAC 20.1 I tryed to ODIN cwm-5.0.2.7-epic4g.tar.md5. I got that to stick but every time i would flash a rom it would get stuck and end up and the samsung boot screen again. i tryed to flach cm9.1 and it hang at the BLM MTD part for a very long long time. then it went to the gray screen(the backgound of cwm 6) so that didn't work. So i tryed to ODIN stock EL30 EC05 just like hear http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1052813
Well that ended with the phone booting up after about 40 minues. But i could not unlock the dam thing. So i did it again & left it for an hour & now its just siting there 12:19 on the clock but i cant unlock the phone. the sprint 4G boot aniy was/is all chopy and the sound cuts in and out. IDK i think my Epic is Epicing F(ced
(i'v been ODINing & reading xda all night:crying: )
Any ideas?
How about just going back to 100% stock FC09? Use re-partition, and you may even want to consider EFS clear (unless not on Sprint). Try that and let it run on that for a day. Note any issues that appear.
If no issues, then try to flash another rom.
Worst case scenario, your flash memory is on it's last leg and heading to become kaput. Flash memory only has so many reads & writes before it kicks the bucket. Constant flashing of roms over the lifetime of this phone diminishes the lifespan faster than a regular user.
A regular user wouldn't even come close to the read/write red zone for this flash memory, but a custom rom user/tester could (especially given the age of our phone).
Which is precisely why I find a somewhat stable ROM and stick with it for about 3 months, then i update/switch ROMs
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk 2
I typically only flash stable roms and stick with one for 4-8 months before doing a fresh Odin, re-root and new rom flash. I'm your normal user here; I stick with what I know works.

I really loved my Epic & i'l be back around the forums, my buddy has a busted Epic so maybe i can make one working phone out of the two.:good:
