I am completely stock, haven't rooted, and have experienced the LOS issue. However, every time it has occurred, I will get service again automatically once I get into a more bars area. Do others with stock experience the same thing? Are the people flashing a custom kernel experiencing LOS but unable to get signal back automatically? And have to resort to a reboot? Perhaps this is the issue with custom kernels, they aren't able to get service back on once it is lost. Feedback, please...

Haven't had one all day, running the Starburst ROM.
I had a couple when using Zedos OC kernal, and one so far with Starburst using the stock kernal. None before root, but I know a few people that have had LOS completely stock. It's pretty puzzeling...

I am stock and have never had LOS knock on wood
I had 'em stock...I had em with a rooted kernel. I'm not stock rooted and I haven't had one in like a week or so.
My LOS issue appeared 1 time last week. Then 2 days after that I have been PLAGUED with the LOS issue. I took it to the Sprint store today and the technician said, "This is a known issue from Sprint and Samsung. There's no date on when it will be solved. The iPhone 5 comes out next week, just trade this phone in at BestBuy and get that." -_-
It always happens to me when network communication is happening (google voice sync, webpage load, music buffering, etc) and then a network switch occurs (wifi to 3g, 4g to 3g, etc).

You guys are missing the point. Does the signal come back for you automatically if you are stock? Because with a custom kernel the only way to get it back is restart the phone.

For me when I was stock it came back on its own(happened a lot). Rooted 4 days ago and only had 1 Los since then and had to restart to reconnect.

Previously I could get service back simply by toggling airplane mode. Was messing with my phone few days ago (kernels, roms, mods, etc) and now only way get out of LOS is a reboot. Yesterday this issue almost got me killed, literally. Was toggling all the switches I could find trying to get service back and while doing that I accidentally ran a red light and nearly totalled my and some chick's car... Next time I'll just reboot the dam phone, lol
I'm running Androids Erection Version 3.5, ZedomaxEpicTouchKernelStock, (I thought it was the overclocked kernel initially that was the issue), just happened to me twice today. The first time, the person I was on the phone with was able to call me back, even though when I tried calling them back first, I had the "Mobile network not available" message. This is getting frustrating... :'(

On stock, it happened to me just once and it would not come back until a reboot. (Even toggling airplane mode did not fix it.)
Happened to me a lot before when I was on zedo's earlier kernels, have since switched to stock kernel and Androids Erection. Still get LOS.. maybe not as often, but a few times a day at work (where reception constantly crosses from service to no-service areas).

Only experience for me was after root, it would hard lock out data/service. Did it 10+ times a day. Only way to get it back was a phone off/on cycle. Airplane mode did nothing.
Not the case for the past 2 weeks with a replacement phone and no root(knocks on wood).

LOL well now I have experienced my first two LOS being on stock no root. Im sure (however its because I'm at work and we have those buildings where only Verizon really can penetrate for signal). I only had to use airplane mode to get out though no reboot. Well, looks for me I actually need to root my phone tonight since I get very terrible service with drainage and Roam Control + 11115 prl was helping very much ( i had no LOS on that as well)
I was on stock rooted kernel and experienced LOS once/twice a day...my bars would switch to a circle with a line through it. Switched to Midnight's ROM and got LOS, but my bars DID NOT change...so I never knew I had lost service. The only way I would find out if is I tried to text/call someone...VERY FRUSTRATING, for sure.
on the latest starburst and im getting it a good 5 times a day.....when i was stock i never once got it
Here's my experience. Was on ZedoMAX'S KERNAL since V1. No significant LOS (maybe 2 or 3 during the 2 weeks). Then this past Friday, non-stop LOS while on V3. Switched to V4.1. LOS continued non-stop. Phone almost unusable. Wifi still worked great. Switch to stock kernel on Saturday afternoon. LOS continued unabated. Losing my mind slowly. This morning, switched back to V4.1 just for the heck of it. Not a single LOS all day.
NONE of it makes sense.

Also my Nexus-S has pretty crap WiFi signal already, in my house with a great WiFi setup, it drops way too often, my EVO 4G was rock solid always connected.

Honestly, I haven't had ANY of these problems. Maybe I got one from a different batch because I was backordered.
My phone seemlessly goes from WiFi to 3G and back again without any intervention from me, in weak OR strong coverage areas. To my knowledge, all my texts have gone through.
I just rooted late last night (with the stock kernel), and so far I haven't had any issues, either.
No issues what so ever trust me. Ask stock phone. Always on wifi when at home. Wifi turns on and connects super quick. text calls come thru right away.

I agree 100% with your sentiment IRT the thread...but, I had 2 LOS in the 5 or 6 days I was rooted. I rooted and had another 2 over 2 or 3 days. Stock kernel reinstalled and I've been good so far, but, I think blaming the kernel is foolish. The problem occurred before I rooted and after I rooted.
Does the fact that I am now rooted with a stock kernel and haven't had the problem suggest to you that only rooted stock-kernels are without fault?
You guys know that you can have everything stock, including kernel/rom/recovery, except the rom would also be rooted by addition of su binary/apk/busybox?
I haven't had any los or any other severe issues before or after I rooted the phone.
It may be that since I live in a small university town, my towers aren't getting upgraded to rev b, but yours are. These issues may not have anything to do with the phone at all. Maybe it has something to do with the sprint maintenance timing.
Or maybe it's because some people bought their phones from third-party retailers, and the phones weren't properly activated.
Or maybe it's some commonly used app that people with problems have installed, and I and others don't have installed.
I've had minimal to no issues personally. And I've had none while using stock Kernel. Using i9000 kernel I had a few LOS, but infrequent.
I also owned the Nexus S...and this is BY FAR a better device from a connectivity comparison.
Remember that the complaints you see are misleading...in that people are more apt to post about an issue, versus those that don't. It's human nature.
rooting or not has NOTHING TO WITH THE ISSUES!!
- I have had a stock phone since the day it came out, and have "watchdog lite" installed, watchdog alerts me about 10-15 times a day that "suspend", "events/0", and "base system" in my phone are using over 50% CPU while the phone is sleeping... LOL, it JUST happened again while i was typing this...
- also had the LOS issues 2 times, has to restart the phone to get signal again
- once, i was in a call, and when i went to "end" the call, i could not click the end button... the other side wud NOT hang up because it was customer service, they r not allowed 2 hang up on a person... so i had 2 restart the phone to fix this
- sometimes i click the power button to wake the screen, n nothing happens for about 5 seconds... so i click the button again, and the screen turns on and back off right away... n den i have 2 click the button a 3rd time to wake the phone...
- sometimes app just close randomly, and if you try to open the app again, its begins from the VERY BEGINNING, so w.e. u were doing in the app is lost... this sucks for games, and if ur in the middle of something important
- when the phone is on charge, the keyboard sometimes acts weird, typing letters u never click... and also u have 2 touch the screen 2wice sometimes 2 make selections... only happens when on charge, u take it off charge, n its back 2 normal right away
cant think of anything else as of right now... but there are some issues in the phone that can most likely be fixed either via root, or thru a sprint update...
I had the nexus s 4g and due to the antenas that phone was practically unusable especially on wifi. The gs2 doesnt have any of those issues. This is the first phone since the evo 4g that has impressed me snd i have owned the evo 3d and photon as well.

I'm not rooted, my phone is 100% unmodded. I haven't even installed a different launcher.

LOS can occur with or without the root. I've only experienced it once but it was in an area with good coverage and no one else with Sprint phones at my office encountered it when I did. It only happened once but I do NOT have a modified ET4G - it is stock. There is a detailed thread on this on android forums and it can occur with or without a root. Apparently it was listed on android forums or android police that this is a known issue. I don't use wifi but it seems to be a common issue for people using wifi from what has been reported.
That being said, I would highly recommend this phone to anyone looking to get a phone.

Yeah... you would think that being unable to handle games for more than 10 minutes would have been something that the engineers would have caught during development...
I have had no issues either. I had one LOS after I flashed the rooted kernel. Went right back to stock kernel and no issues since. And none before the rooted kernel either.
Has it been COMPLETELY confirmed by those that only get LOS on custom roms...when you return to stock does everything go back to normal completely? I STILL havnt rooted my phone and installed a custom rom but I think im ready for some custom rom and black and blue themed goodness. Is it becoming more worth it now?
It has been mostly proven that neither kernels nor roms cause los. It is simply the phone itself and the network area you are in. Not all phones are created equal....

Right, this of course is one of those things thats still SLIGHTLY shrouded in I guess whats classifiable as a mystery. Im really just trying to verify that those who DID have problems only when on a custom rom, that those symptoms were remedied by going back to stock. Im really more a less trying to convince myself that even if i wade out into the waters of custom roms and i by chance DO encounter a problem, a stock flash would be the cure all.

Then I flashed to Viperboys ROM, and started getting them again. Went back to my Nandroid backup, and now I am 2 days without LOS again...... So not sure it is strictly the Phone itself.

BAH, this is what I keep throwing back and fourth in my mind. Lol I havnt had a LOS yet...and im just afraid that after i root and do stuff to the phone....itll be a bug fest :\
I had LOS a few times before rooting (I was only stock for about a week, if I remember correctly). After Rooting and using custom kernels, it got worse. depending on which custom kernel, it could be between 5-20 times in a day. I was very frustrated. I never did go back to completely stock. I tried every kernel that was in these threads. I found 2 that work for me flawlessly. I haven't had a LOS issue since I switched to either of the 2 "Stock Pulled Kernels". I am currently on and have been since flashing the one with CWM. I am still rooted and running the Midnight ROM. I am also rocking the v6 supercharger script with setting 6 and the ACS AIO Mod. I have had the Android OS bug since day one and today I formatted my internal and external sd cards to see if that improves. More than one user claims that it has for them so, my fingers are crossed. I still get decent battery life for how I use it, anyway. If you flash a ROM or kernel, you can always go back to completely stock or partially stock. You really have nothing to worry about. Get a usb jig for a few bucks and it will put you even more at ease. Good luck and happy flashing.
No offense but this is asked daily, a little reading.
Developers have stated that it is a problem with the phones firmware.
It has nothing to do with rooting.
Or Sprint's network.
Or the color of your shoes.
LOSt Kernel is recommended until Samsung gets off their ass.
Doing well here. No LOS ever since purchase on launch day. Rooted a week ago with stock rom and root and no change to kernel. Still no LOS. I work by traveling all over the US and no issues there either.

I know this has been said before, but I just wanted to get my opinion in! I have flashed almost everything out there on my phone, and read everything on the LOS issue and I'm pretty sure it has very little to do with the rom/kernel. Maybe the rom/kernel could make it worse...but I haven't seen any actual cases of that with the current selection of custom software. It's gotta be the modem software, no? Which I'm pretty sure is totally separate from the rom/kernel.

Everyone has there own opinion on the situation. My opinion is once you root this phone, going back to stock right now is not the same as a stock phone that has not been rooted.
On my first SGS2 I did not see an LOS until the day I rooted. Exchanged for a new phone because of it and I have had my replacement for 2 weeks now and have not seen an LOS on it.
I will not be rooting this one unless I see an LOS pop up to prove to me it happens on un-rooted phones. I know people have made the claim but I have not seen it.
Who knows, maybe on stock, LOS does happen but maybe signal comes back on it's own so that is why I haven't seen it. Anyway, this phone is still amazing running stock. I get great battery life and it is zippy as anything. Now if an ICS working Rom pops up soon, that will be one tough decision on what to do.....
Also, I though after about 2 weeks a a device is out a true stock Odin from either Sprint or Samsung leak out. I do not believe we have seen this yet and correct me if I am wrong, but isn't that truly the only way to return this phone like it was out of the box?

If you Odin this and do a factory reset, you will be back to complete stock.
ran mine stock the first couple days with no LOS. tried a couple of Zedomax's roms, and started getting daily LOS. Went to the pulled stock kernel, over 3 weeks now, not a single LOS.
My wife's E4gT is stock.. mine is on Starburst 1.7 which includes the LoSt Kernel. She gets LoS about once a day... I have had 2 since switching to the Lost Kernel over a week ago.
I got LOS within 4 hrs of receiving the phone (stock obviously). Searching the forum reveals that this issue affects all phones, rooted or not. With all the purported solutions, YMMV.

First of all let me point at that I am currently still a OG EVO user. This will probably be my next phone on DEC. 1 once I am due for a upgrade with Sprint. I really love the design and specs for this phone but I have been turned off by all the LOS talk.
If a phone can't maintain a working signal it isn't much good no matter how nice the screen or specs are.
After doing some research on what I hope will be my next phone, I've come to the conclusion that this is a hardware problem. From what I can gather these phones have some kind of defect with the internal antenna which is causing this problem.
This probably isn't news to anyone on these forums but I just wanted to get some confirmation on this. I'm hoping that if this is in fact that problem the next batch of these phones released around the holiday season will have this problem fixed.
Assuming this hardware problem is not fixed; is there any rom/kernel combination that is known to be most effective in terms of this LOS issue?
Na don't think it's a hardware issue, if so I believe it wouldn't be so random. With the LOStKernel I haven't had any more issues but others have. That being said, if it were a hardware issue i would've had los as well already.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
I agree If this is Hardware issues that say the Antenna get low signal and then won't pick it back up. Then That Pickup is what needs to be fixed (and that is software). We've all had low signal or switched to Roaming. This is where the issue is, at least to me. The Low Signal strength maybe a 2nd issue but that may need a Power adjustment.
I also agree with the LOSKernel. I was averaging 1-2 a day and haven't had one in 3 days (I installed 3 days ago).

Yeah, it's not hardware. The way the bug pops up is extremely circumstantial...so much so that we still don't know the parameters of the circumstance that triggers the bug. Having a low signal seems to have something to do with it but it has also occurred with full signal...but software changes seem to have a gigantic impact on it. I haven't seen one in weeks. I dunno....
I wouldn't be too concerned. I have the phone and I'm not.
...and it is a pretty bad-ass phone. If you are already a Sprint subscriber you'll love it, especially coming from the Evo4G.
I have never had LOS.

I'm thinking this is definitely software related, I personally didn't have a LOS problem until I started flashing kernels.Even on the Loskernel I was experiencing several LOS a day, flashed back to stock rom/kernel and haven't had a problem. From what I have experienced, Los seems to correlate with the phone roaming off of the sprint network and unable to connect back.

Its a modem issue the kernel can only help so much. Samsung will be releasing a new modem.bin when they give us the maintenance update.
No it's a sprint problem my phone is fully flashed to ntelos and I have been trying to get los since monday even trying different kernels and roms I just cant produce los
Sent from my Galaxy S2 using Tapatalk
I've seen a couple posts saying the LoS issue is related to roaming off/on the Sprint network...this may be true to a certain extent but I sit 5 feet from an Airave and I'll get LoS a few times a day when at home. Happens just as often if not more when I'm out and about.
On a more related note, OP: this phone is great and they will fix the phone somehow or make good on it. If for some reason they haven't solved the problem and you are over the 14-30 days (maybe even waaaayyyy past that...months!) then they will take the phone back. If you can't get them to give you a free Photon or basically whatever you want, then you are a pushover! Just have to start making a papertrail for your issue, that is all really.
Would that necessarily rule out that the air wave itself is not roaming or losing/regaining signal throughout the day affecting your phone?

I have an Airave in my house and do not have any connectivity issues at all to it. I am also using a phone that has not been rooted and have yet to get an LOS either.
My point is that if the air wave is losing connectivity at all, then your phone is as well forcing it to roam

I was getting once per day utill the Lost kernel came along, now I've only had 1 LOS in the 10 days or so since the kernel has been out. I definitely believe it's software or modem related.
Bad ass phone nonetheless...dont hesitate!
Love this phone. Got it launch day and have never experienced a single LOS. I've never tried to root it or install a custom kernel.

I only have had LOS when I installed a ROM a long time ago.. Have had no problems on stock rom, stock kernel, rooted
About 6 times a day, the capacitive button on my phone will randomly get pressed by the phone. I'll be holding the phone, and the phone will go crazy. There is no rhyme or reason why it occurs; it just happens. other times, it will just vibrate, and menu items will open and close. I can also feel all the haptic feedback when this is happening.
Sometimes it ends calls, sometimes pushes the menu button like crazy, and eventually locks the phone up for 5 seconds. I can remedy the situation by turning off the screen.
I took the phone in, but was unable to replicate the issue for the rep to see. He tried for 10 minutes and gave up. I wanted to let him know I wasn't just making up stuff, so I tried in store for 75 minutes. (Just so you know, its not related to too many running apps. I have already tested this) He then told me on my way out to brick my phone so sprint would be forced to repair it, which I do not want to have to do.
So I called up tech support. and whats typical of Sprint is to find everything else to assign to blame so they can just call it a day and not have to do anything. The newest blame is being put on the Network Vision upgrade since I live in Chicago. I have 6 lines on my family plan, and none of the other 5 phones are having any issues. Now tech support is telling me to go back to the store. The phone is driving me crazy now. I've reset and reflashed the phone to stock EL29 numerous times and the issue wont go away. I've also deleted everything on the internal SD card. I've reset via ##786# too. The phone is just plain screwed up.
I have TEP. What should I do at this point? Is anyone here a tech?
Thanks.
I'm not a tech and not trying to be smart, but have you tried flashing non-stock EL29 based roms, like Calkulin's or Blazer's? I would try other roms Gingerbread or ICS, just to rule out any software issues.
yes. i used to be on Calkulin's when this started happening (about a month ago), so i went back to stock, and the problem persisted.
So you're saying this didn't happen before flashing Calkulin's rom? I would keep trying other non stock roms (even ICS roms) to make sure. To install ICS roms, you need to flash EL26 CWM5 kernel (Gingerbread), then the rom. Also flash Calkulin's format all.zip (you may have already done this), because it wipes data, cache, as well as system partition. Factory data reset does not wipe system partition, I believe (I might be wrong)

Took it to the local store (was a corporate store at the time) guy was super nice and swapped it out without any hassle. Man do I miss that store. :-(
I have the same issue with my phone. I thought at first it was some sort of corruption on my blazer Rom, so I flashed multiple other roms with the same outcome. I haven't tried taking it to a store yet, but if this problem gets any worse, I might just have to use my tep for once.

This was happening like crazy when I was on the latest Calkulin ROM. I switched to CM9 and it was still happening. Menu kept popping up, phone would randomly reboot and sometimes the screen would just go black without shutting the phone off and I could not wake it up without a manual reboot.
Today I used sfhubs One-Click for stick FD19 and haven't had any issues at all. So far my phones been rock solid for at least 12 hours, whereas before I would have seen these issues pop up several times within that time frame.
lets just hope it stays that way
I've heard this was happening in low signal areas. What was the signal like when it started?
Yup mine is doing this too. I bought this phone used on craigslist about two months ago and it started acting up about a week ago

Messed up
I am a lead tech at a corporate store fairly close to you (a few hours). If I find no evidence of corrosion or other liquid damage, I would be happy to order a replacement for you. Your disadvantage would be time to get here, and since seed stock is incredibly rare for this device, the trip would likely have to be made twice. PM me for further details.
This happens to me too on blazer 4.0 and blazer 4.1.... ITS very annoying

Just got mine replaced and the brand new one is doing it stock. Usually when the battery gets below 30%.

You beat me to the post. It still happens on ICS in low signal areas..on 3g and 4g. It must be a flaw. I have tried it in known dead spots on about every ROM since launch. As soon as you get on the edge of a dead or very low signal spot, a random vibration then menu Popup or recent tasks on ICS.. its frustrating

i am not in a low signal area at all, and I have tested this theory
My phone did this once a few weeks ago. It was only the menu button and I was on the main home screen so it kept popping up the menu options. Shut it down and restarted and it hasn't happened since.
I have the EXACT same problem! I have concluded that it only happens in low signal areas, and it only affects some phones. Its EXTREMELY ANNOYING! I mite get mine replaced, being that my sprint store is very reasonable. What I do is put the phone in airplane mode when I'm on wifi and use Google voice for texting. This fixes the problem immidiately but only works until you turn off airplane mode. Let me know if that works.
I'm pretty sure this is a Samsung phone issue in general. It happens in low signal areas. My E4GT does it occasionally, and my fascinate used to do it as well.
Though, I will say the e4gt is not nearly as bad as the fascinate was. If you were in a low signal area with that phone, it was literally unusable because it would back out of everything you tried to do, or the settings menu would keep popping up and closing.
I've had the menu button pop up on the e4gt and a few phantom key presses in low signal areas, but nothing near what I experienced on the fascinate.

I flashed a rom 2 days ago. Ever since then, if my phone sleeps for a while in my pocket, it will not wake. I have to hold power to reboot. Anyone heard of this? Know a fix?
Not on cm9 or 10. TW based from here.Thought I had heard of this before.
Thanks in advance for any and all help!

I am having a similar issue. After flashing to Phantom Blazer ICS ROM, I inadvertently ran ROM Manager and tried to flash CWM 5.0.2.7 that way. Since then I've wiped numerous times and flashed several other ROMs, even performing a nandroid restore to GB Blazer ROM, but to no avail. The phone screen and buttons still flash a bit as a precursor to my phone shutting down, and upon reboot my battery drains down to 2% and goes to shut off again. This happens repeatedly unless I leave my phone on a charger. This has lead me to believe that it may be a battery problem, but I cannot confirm until I receive my new battery in a few days. Hope someone can shed some light on this.
Anything odd with the wi-fi?
Those that seem to be having these issues seem to also have wi-fi issues.
For example, my phone freezes at work due to the wi-fi config. If I drop it, no problems whatsoever.
I just get the cheap ones off eBay you get a lot for a couple dollars.

Which is awesome if you like having extremely shoddily made potential bombs/incendiary devices in a $500 phone in your pocket close to your gentelmans area... me? I pay the ~$20 for an OEM battery... lasts longer than those things too

Sleep of Death or Hardware?
I too am having this problem. Long story short a few days ago I flashed CM10 Alpha4 and noticed out of no where my phone would just turn off. No boot off ani, nothing. It drains my battery to 1%. I did several wipes, formatting, clearing, stock GB, many different ICS roms with TONS of different kernels (i thought it was kernel related). Nothing helps. My phone does this while charging too. It also does it when the screen is on and I can predict when it's going to shut off because the backlight starts pulsing, then BAM RIGHT IN KISSER! It. Sucks.
Currently on FH13 Wicked Sensations with Kuban kernel .0.5, I guess it's betetr. But, idk.
I hope there's a fix, but I'm thinking it's a hardware dealy.
I guess..least with the cheap ones you mess them up putting them on you just wasted that money lol..

I had SOD for 3 days and just before my screen started fading in and out, I locked my phone. When I unlocked it, it saw that Maps.Process.Whatever stopped responding. I thought that was weird bc I haven't opened Google Maps yet with this new ROM flash. So, I went into Settings > Location Services > and UNCHECKED location and google search. Since then, no SOD. I have no idea if this works for everyone. Maybe you can try that...idk

I will give this a try this tonight and run it through tomorrow, see if it helps with my issue (which sounds a whole lot like your issue). Will report back tomorrow night, thanks for the tip!
i was so fed up i use the el29 stock tar file went back to it and now i received a official 4.04 update imma afraid to update lol...battery suck..now batter life on this el29 in fine for now..
Tried turning off all location, but SoD still happening very erratically. Still have light pulsing and loss of signal right before shut down. Perhaps it is hardware, but could it really be the battery? Will find out soon when battery arrives in a day or two.
