So I bought my first ever android device the other day, an Xperia Arc S. Love it to bits, however I really am paranoid.
I haven't bought a case yet, so I dont take the phone outside (use my old phone) and I haven't got a screen protector yet either.
I was looking up screen protectors for the Arc S online and I came across a post that said apparently the phone comes pre-installed with a screen protector. Is that true? I know I have a spare set of screen protectors that came with the box, along with the HDMI cable, USB cable, Mains adapter and Headphones. However, no leather case as I've seen people mention!
I'm in the UK so it's a UK phone, and bought it Sim free and it's the white one.
If it does have a screen protector on, is the protection enough? Should I put on another screen protector, just to be safe?
yeah they come with screen protectors on. look at the corners/edges in the light and you can make it out. i've found the screen protector is enough protection, although if you are prone to dropping your phone often, you may want to consider purchasing a case/pouch.
also before you put another screen protector on, remember that screen protectors tend to dim the display as it creates another layer for the light to go through. also this extra layer means you may have to press a bit harder on the screen.
I even removed the factory applied screen protector as it was scratched up a bit and so far no scratches on the screen.

Thanks guys, so I take it it's a global thing, rather than it being region specific?
I've bought a case and pouch (hasn't been delivered yet)
Since you guys are owners of the Arc S, how do you feel about the bottom 3 buttons? Do they feel a bit loose and flimsy to you?
Got the Arc without S and the buttons don't feel lose.

Hmm that is a bit worrying. What I mean is that the other 2 buttons (back button and settings button) seem to only have one connection point (in the middle of either buttons) and because the buttons are long, as they move towards the Home button, it feels really loose, and I can press that part of it quite inwards without the phone responding?

Also I have a question, don't need to make a new thread for it I reckon:
The top of my screen (statusbar) burns in a bit, probably because of water (leaving it unprotected in a damp bathroom, I'm a dumbass). But there's another issue. I've got a lot of dead pixels in the top half of my screen, maybe ten of them, they're easy to spot on a black background. Could that be caused by suspected water damage too?
I've contacted support, and they said their logistics partner would call me to let them get my phone, but after two missed calls they haven't called in weeks (suckers).
The sticker on my battery hasn't coloured btw, and no other issues on the phone too.

That is the normal protectors installed from factory, during manufacturing for product quality reasons. I admit that they really protect the plastic from getting scratched. But as mentioned in the manual, you should remove it from the phone itself (both glide stickers, the upper sticker in the keyboard, near the hidges, the back screen cover sticker and the front sticker protecting the screen). To substitute, I must say that problably you should cut some plastic clear sticker (same used to protect book covers) with the size and format of the sticker removed and attached in the glide sections to protect it from scratches of opening and closing the keyboard.
thank you very much for your info.
but can you say me where exactly did you find info about removing this protectors? I just looked in manual what was on CD with my phone for word "protect" and not found any info about that.
and yes, I saw that those protectors had scratches, they were noticeable - but with time they will become more and more visible (more scratches, dirt around them e.t.c) + I don't think I can cut them so accurate as they were...
so all owners of T2? did you remove these protectors? did you got there scratches after removing them?
P.S.: Black Phoenix you leaved your protectors also? just on keyboard?

At the moment I have all the protectors, because I'm waiting for my Screen Protector from Proporta. The others in the keyboard I will keep, mainly because I bought a phone with the keyboard but I only use the screen one, not the physical one (so If I had open the keyboard 10 times since I had the phone was too much).
If it is a clear sticker than obviously you remove it once it wears out and live with it....
yep, I got it. but hope to hear from other owners who already removed them, what experince they got - any scratches or nope?
Mine is sliding off on the left side only. I was just going to slice off the part that is crinkling up and keep the rest of it on. I don't want to find out if it will get scratched or not.
I removed the ones on the sides as i knew they were merely their from the factory and not actually their to protect during use. I dont have any scratches on the keyboard.
The back one, under the middle of the screen i havent removed because it looks like it would be too much of a pain to try. So im just waiting till it starts to come off on its own.
if you're concerned about being able to cut them as precise as the originals just use an exacto knife. Just put the plastic piece over the plastic you will use to replace it and trace it with the knife.
i just cut off the tips on both sides as it was crinkling up, kept the rest of it

just rip it off and live with it dude... I took the film cover off of my Xperia and nothing happened to my keys. If you are worried about the glossy back scratching than you obviously have too little things to worry about.
And if you are that person than obviously you can afford a second one because taking it off won't damage any phone.

well if really, I don't worry about back side scratches and about other minor things all I see now it's two stickers what are located on the left and right sides from the keyboard (i don't see so space in xperia), this space is used for gliding - so every time you are opening keyboard, two small stands from the back of the screen sliding in this area, where these stickers are - and after two days of using this device - this stickers are pretty scratched. so I decided to ask, if it's safely to remove or it's they needed to be replaced and seems like I'll finish by removing them both.
but anyway other owners experience is welcome

Just like I said........ the back side get's scratched....
unless you are talking about the sticker that is most likely found on the bottom half (the half that is on the same plane as the keyboard).
If so, then I hope it only scratches everything but the qwerty keys.

I took it off within a couple days, cause thats when i noticed they were even there lol. Its hard to say how often i open it. I generally text with the keyboard all the time (vs using the on screen one). Some days ill send 4 or 5 text messages, some i wont send any.
I dont think any of us has really had it long enough to even accumulate scratches from simple wear and tear. What you have to realize is that plastic film, is the same kind they wrap EVERYTHING up with. It was on my 46" LCD (the frame i mean) as well as both of my 19" monitors (also the frames). They wrap electronics up in that crap to keep it from getting scratched during manufacturing and shipping, but it rarly ever looks good left on.
My point? it isnt meant for long term protection. Just rip it off and run with it. The plastic housing is the same material/texture as what they use on laptops (least on mine) so it will take the wear and tear. I suspect over time it will develop 'slide' marks on it, but it wont take anything away from the device itself.

I'am sure that we are talking about the same things but anyway I attached photo to this post, with marked RED scratches on the sticker, and marked in BLUE came off part of this sticker.
all my previous HTC phones herlad and wizard had special sliders - where the display glides, here it glides on the viewable area and it don't seems really very scratch resistance, so it's confused me.
the protector at the middle top of the keyboard, and the one behind the screen
i wonder whether sliding is affected by the 2 protectors?
I had 4 protectors: screen protector, behind screen one, and two at keyboard - on it's sides (on of them you can see on my photo), so while gliding only these 2 protectors are affected.
i removed the small one at the middle top of the keyboard
now the sliding is smoother!
i am left with the one behind the screen... should i remove..?
ok... i removed the one at the back
and now the sliding action is super smooth
Well i assumed one was'nt fitted as standard because they provide you one in the box. but after today, i decided to get rid of the horrible temporary screen sheet thingy and apply the provided screen protector, but upon closer inspection, there seems to be something already on the screen. but if it is a screen protector its been put on really really well.
have any of you noticed this? is it a screen protector (look near edges) or just the default way the screen face is? i've tried picking at one of the corners but i cant get it to lift, but it seems i have kind of maybe slightly frayed the edge, but not sure :/
what do you guys think? have a close look.
EDIT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING MORE -
All xperia plays come with a screen protector fitted. some come with an extra one in the box! some dont! i am guessing this is a region and carrier dependant thing!
i would not remove the factory screen protector. I personally think that this is not a cheap screen/shatter proof protector! this is the real deal, i cant comment about older protectors on x10 or whatever but so far i have zero scratches on this screen protector and i do not use a case and i take my phone everywhere and it is in and out of pockets all day even pockets with zips. i'd keep it on until it does end up horribly scratched then remove it! why remove it before? makes no sense.
From what I remember the xperia x10 came with 2 "shatter glass proof films" One pre-installed and an extra one in the box. The xperia play might have the same thing. Makes sense tho why a lot of reviewers think the screen is plastic and not glass.
I did also think that before I put my protector on. Since you have mentioned it, I took a closer look and it definitely seems that there is something on there.
Hmm I see, confusing. But how would we find out for sure? I deffinately dont want to end up wasting the screen protector and end up fitting two on at one time!
It has a default screen protector on it
I can confirm it you get one extra like the X10

Mine is from the Netherlands.
And I fitted a bought screen protector as i`m not convinced the protector looking thingy on the screen is actually removeable. Dont want to end up with a scratched screen and then finding out its part of the actual screen. Maybe i`m paranoid

Got the same as awoken. Also dutch. Want to add the wall charger is a unit that plugs into a wall socket(duh) and then let's you insert the usb cable into it.
With my docking station (bought from amazon.de) I got a usb charger that had the usb cable integrated with the adapter. Not a bad deal for 25 euro's.

The Dock is a lot more expensive from Amazon.co.uk (33.80 EUR) - cheapest place here is Play.com at £17.99 which works out at 20.26 EUR
Amazon have dropped their price this evening to £19.99 (22.50 EUR) but still not the cheapest.
On the german amazon site it also seams to be lowered in price to in the 22 euro range.

i have always been confused since my X10. The Arc and the Play both seem to be a screen protector BUT IT IS NOT. Let me repeat IT IS NOT A SCREEN PROTECTOR.
Let me share my experience, I had initially when i got my Arc, pasted the additional screen protector. Then, after reading in the forum someone mentioned, that there is already one. Upon closer inspection realize that there seem to be one, so took out the one i pasted, so as not to affect the touch sensitivity. (note - i wasn't suffering from any touch sensitivity issue in the first instance) . A few days later, the one of the edge got a bit chip off and i told myself that should be an issue as i can easily replace it with the spare from the box. To my horror when i tried replacing, it seems that the whole original "so called screen protector" is permanently stuck on the screen. I gave up trying to peel the old one as pushing it further would mean damaging the screen.
Please someone prove me wrong and show me that you can pull out the original screen protector.
So when i got my Play, i saw the same thing bit this time, i just pasted the screen protector that came from the box.
Like i said. if there is a screen protector, try peeling it off. I cant no matter what i try.
For everyone info.
put a hair dryer on it for about 30 seconds make sure battery is out and phone is off (Obviously) then you will be able to remove it. because it's factory fitted, it's a lot more "snug" than normal ones.

Not personally no but ive seen a few posts on t'internet, it's a shatter proof screen protector and it can be taken off but with a little work.
here is one of the posts, you will have to search the thread:
http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1636089
A screen protector came with my R800a. An easy way to test is to take a piece of tape, put it on a corner of the device, and slowly peel it back. If there's a protector on your screen it will lift off with the tape. You don't need to pick at it or use a hair dryer. You can use more tape to 'dab' off bits of dust, hair, crap too before letting it settle back down. Just squeegee out the bubbles and you're in business.
And, just FYI... I took mine off and put on a ZAGG full body shield and it's a piece of ****. I wound up peeling it all off (except the back because I don't care). It's ugly, it marks easily (I put scars on it with my fingernails without even trying), and it has a weird rubbery/slimey feel to it. I'm glad I saved the original because I put it right back on this morning. Terrible waste of $24.99.
Stick with the OEM protector if it came on your device. In fact, I want to find out how to order more from SE. It's probably one of the better ones I've ever seen for a device like this.

Good move,
iv also done the same with the Zagg, sent it back to the shop, it made my phone look 10 years old on the 1st day, very sticky and did not go to the ends of the screen so there was a build up of crap every day around the edges.
the back was not bad as it helps with grip, but definitely would not recommend using the Zagg screen protector
Hello, found a few scratches on my Xperia Arc screen and got very disappointed, I thought it had scratch resistant screen, later I took a close look to the screen and found out that it had one more screen layer, could anyone tell me if it can be removed or not, because when I asked SE support team, the operator told me that it can be removed, I just wont a suggestion, help guys.
I would not touch that layer it is part of the capacitive sensor on the screen if I'm not mistaken
yeah, I'm afraid of that too, but support team convinced me in opposite
Yes, you can remove it without problems. I did it in December without problems so far.

Anyways..it's just a screen protector..if got scratched,replace it with a new one..
And in this case,i would suggest you to seek some professional help as you might end up making new scratches in order to remove the protector. It's a tough job and needs a lot of love and care d(^_^)
Thank you all, I did it, it really was a screen protector, if found layer like this on your arc , you should peel it off, as a result you get Better colors, touchscreen enhancement and sharper image.
I dont think that we should remove the screen guard. SE provides two screen guards with the handset. One comes already pasted on ur handset and other comes in the box. we need not remove it as it keeps the main screen safe from scratches..
I really agree with your, but that screen protector makes touchpad less sensitive and colors are less vivid, so I prefer being extra careful with my phone then looking at Less Attractive screen
Last time I checked the screen protector I have on doesn't change the quality, clearness or the color of the display. Just saying.
Protect your screen with one. Most of them now a good and leave your screen feeling normal.
i know its an old question but anyway i have one question.how hard is it to peel of the screen protector? im trying it right now and im afraid of braking something, should i force it off or what?
It is glued there so you may have to use some force to peel it off.

Is it safe to use it without a case (in case of a drop from like belt height), have you has drops like this and no signs of damage, or you have broken the screen or damaged something from less than that height.
And what about the trident case will it protect good from drops from belt height?
thanks

Screen is scratch proof basically, I dropped mine 3 times already at waist level still working fine and im not using any case protector as there is no available stuff like that here on my country yet. I advice you use I-shield for your phone.
I've dropped my play from a bit higher than belt height. The battery case popped off and the battery fell out, but once I snapped it back together, it's like it never fell
I have found that the R800x has been no more fragile than any other phone. I had one of those silicone covers on mine for a while but I had to take it off to use the docking station. So after a while I quit using it, and I haven't had any problems. YMMV.
I dropped mine and it fell face down and it hit the screen. It hit the corner of my desk where the those sharp corners are.
Still the screen works fine!

Wow thanks, i didn't expect it to be so resistant, especially with a big glass screen.
On the other hand, the white plastic is not so fragile.
On my first drop, it hit the ground on the bottom right corner (the Search button area), and a small piece of the white plastic fell off.

What white plastic? The part that the battery back locks in to?
And I believe your choice of words should be "the white plastic is very fragile," indicating that it breaks easily.
It's not that good, I dropped mine on concrete and the digitizer broke straight away, LCD was fine though, before that i also dropped it on the bus and they have that special gritted rubber floor and it scratched the case and the bottons on the back (L1 and R1)

Well digitizer registers screen touches and lcd displays everything, the digitizer is made from glass so it shatters, in my case it shattered but still registered touches
Dropped from belt level, Just some scratches on one corner, otherwise no damage.
I drop mine several times a week. Never from above 2 or 3 feet, and on carpet, but it's like I never did.
I also regularly wake up and find I'm lying on it.
The most I've dropped previous phones is once or twice (the whole time I've had them), if ever.
I don't know why I drop this phone all the time. Every time I do I think, "That's it, that's the one that ****s it up". Not yet though...
It's a tough phone.

It won't be as durable as keyboardless phones, I find the Samsung Galaxy phones to be much more durable with Gorilla glass. I can press against the screen to distort the liquid crystal. I have dirt under the screen also, which never happens with the Samsung.
I think all slide out phones require extra care so I will definitely get a case for it, especially the plastic seems easy to scratch.
Well my friend dropped it on the screen at sitting level. It worked fine. I threw it out of my hand once and it fell flat on the screen and it slid down the car ramp on the sidewalks. It survived with only one tiny scrape on the corner, close to the screen. Ever since I took my case off two weeks ago I've been dropping my phone many times. My friend knocked my phone straight out of my hand yesterday and I had chance to catch it. I got lucky.anyway tthis week has been the worst week for my phone because it has been dropped more than any electronic I ever had in aa year!!!

In my opinion it's a pretty ****ty build quality. Yeah the screen does survive falls from waist height but you should be expecting that from any phone. The hard buttons on the front are quite badly scratched on mine just from normal use. Also I have some scrapes on the corners from the odd drop. And the game pad is scratched I think from sliding the screen up and down so I'm not impressed. I also hate how wobbly the screen is.

Hello everyone,
Is it just me or the new M8 have a fragile screen? I've had quite a lot of HTC phone in the past and never had a scratched/broken/cracked screen with any of them (they had invisible shield but it still was very clear). But my M8? A different story. My first one last 1 month before cracking near the middle on the left. I changed it and immediatly (as in remove from the box and install) an invisible shield glass. Now, the protector, 8 weeks old, is cracked at 4 places.
The phone never droped or hit anything and is alone in my pocket, far from anything, like all of my other phone... Is it because it's bigger then the other, thus making it "warp" in my pocket, adding pressure on the screen? I don't know, but I really feel like I'll be forced to by a case with front flap to prevent that, something I really wanted to avoid.

You've invested in this Awesome phone, but you don't want to spend money to protect it? Personally I bought an otterbox. These days one hast to have a protective case, as all the newer phones screens are fragile. I am glad the rep at the T-Mobile store talked me into getting the case. I have a bit more peace of mind now. If you get a case I highly recommend an otter case, I don't think there is a case better than an otter case, then again this is the first time I have bought a case for my phone so I could be wrong.
Hmmm... Haven't had a case since one x, gorilla glass are suppose to be tough and I like the aluminum finish on the phone. M7 didn't had this issue neither. Right now I'm waiting for my invisible glass replacement, but still, this phone never dropped, never bump on something, always rest on his back and still, screen broke. It's super fragile and it shouldn't be like that
Never had this problem at all. I hammer my phones too. I've dropped it numerous times, and it has marks and chips in the aluminium and two very small scratches on the screen.
Nothing at all fragile about this phone or the screen, although you said the screen protector shattered too so it's something you are doing.
I really don't see what I'm doing differently then with all my other phone. It's in my pocket, screen side on my skin so if it bump, it bump the back, always rest on his back, never droped or bumped.... The first one cracked from the middle of the screen (left to the middle), this one, the screen protector cracked from the top middle to the right. Really weird...

Perhaps it's getting twisted from being in the pocket. The phone is quite tall, so when it's in your pocket and you move around, it could put stress on the phone and make it crack. For instance when you sit down and your pants gets stretched out etc. I've broken the volume buttons of another phone by keeping in the pocket while im on a bike, and in time the stress on the buttons caused them to malfuntion.
That's the only explanation i can think of, when you say that you haven't dropped it and it hasn't bumped into anything etc.
