Hey guys, I've seen a lot of folks out there posting screen shots of 20+hrs with battery still remaining. I'd consider myself a heavy user, so maybe I shouldn't expect that... I run the Juggernaut ROM with Bullet kernel... Just recently switched to 4.1.
I've seen folks say that Faux's kernel is better... and tons of them are under volting? I'm not sure if they're over clocking AND under volting, or what...
Some are using SetCPU, some System Tuner, others using Faux's CPU app...
I see some users swearing by Juice Defender and other software too...
So my question is, for someone like me who wants to get better battery life without sacrificing connectivity (I use push for my gmail/exchange and want to keep it that way) what have you guys had the best luck with?
I use a lot of widgets (agenda widget, facebook, and Google News, Beautiful 4x1 Weather widget, and large Gtask widget) but I've been very careful to set them to refresh at reasonable intervals to avoid hammering my battery.
I run mostly with WiFi on at the house, but if I'm out on the road or at work, I keep it off.

Each device and set up is different. The only way you will be able to find what works best for you is trial and error. With what you have going on it will not be easy.
For faux kernel I uv 100mv and set my Max at 1512 and min at ~300. I use scripts and not Apps like setcpu or fauxcontrol.

I need educated on a few things, I'm concerned with the performance of my phone so I have it rooted and I have installed system panel to monitor things, autokill memory optimizer for ram of course as well as watchdog to alert me if any apps are outta control. Am I crazy for having these or is it a good idea? Also is there anything better I should use rather then what I already have? I just want my phone to run smooth and my battery to last bc I use my phone all day long

A lot of that is unneeded. I have System Panel, but only use it if I'm having problems with an app. Rarely is there a use for watchdog. On stable ROMs, I've never seen an app get out of control, and rarely on betas. So it justs sits in the background eating battery itself. Also try, using a stock speed, undervolted battery with SetCPU. If I'm trying to make mine last, I have a screen off profile of powersave 384/245, and regular of 700-800ish (I forget)/245 conservative.

ok thanks, i installed setcpu and have two profiles set, one for when screen is off with settings similar to yours and another set to when my battery is >30%. could you please tell me what the governor options of on demand, userspace, or performance mean ?? also should i set priority's to anything other then the default 50 % ? thanks for the help
When I first joined this forum, I was very impressed with how responsive the XDA community was to answer my questions. I have gained loads of valuable information that has helped me along my way with my EVO. I had one goal in mind; I wanted to customize and modify to increase my battery life. the Q and A forum was the first one that I turned to. I would instinctively try searching for things such as "best battery saving kernels" or "Which rom will provide me with the best battery life" and etc. Of course there are hundreds of threads with people asking these types of questions, the only problem is that they are outdated! I have only been active in this forum for a better part of 2 weeks and it seems like there is a new or beta out every other day!
Developers are quicker than ever releasing new kernels and roms so it makes it difficult to get a defined answer! I figured that the best solution to this would be to have a stickied thread with the community posting there results through testing or just opinion in general, that way it will help stop all of the "best rom" or "best kernel" threads. It would be a great resource to not only people that are new to the forum but for those looking to stay up to date with the best of the best.
Now onto the purpose of this thread.
I realize that everyones phone is different. And that what is best for one phone, may not be best for another phone.
Still I think that a generalization would be very helpful when trying to decide what's best.
Here goes:
Kernel Testing Reports: AOSP and Non AOSP Kernels here: http://home.comcast.net/~ttechnology/htc.html(Not my work, all credit goes to Skyler.
What are your favorite kernel/rom combinations for saving battery life?
Feel free to report your testing results and attach screenshots of juice plotter and etc!
Hopefully the whole XDA community can help keep this updated for reference at any point in time!
With all that said, hopefully I will catch a mods attention and have a chance of this getting stickied.
11/2/2010Myn's 2.2 with Baked Kernel #6
This was my first day testing this combination with moderate to heavy usage. Battery life was not very good for me. I will be trying this again tomorrow to give my phone time to adjust better. Screenshot attached.
Bump...report your kernel/rom history and what has worked best for you!
Well I thought it was a good idea anyways

I used it sparingly. Some twidroid, some browser, some freecell, a call or two and EVAC(great game). Yea its launcher pro. I grey'ed out everything like the status bar and notification bar. Made it gingerbread like. Or what rumors say gingerbread will look like.....
fresh 3.4, nets 4.2 bfs agressive , been getting 90ma screen off and around 200ma screen on.
i'm really interested to see other battery draw compared to mine.

Very cool, hopefully more people will become involved with this thread and it can stay up to date. Thanks for you input!
i just got 1d 6hrs out of my evo.
I would categorize my usage as moderate (facebook, texting, phone calls, some game playing, maps, music playing)
Fresh 3.2 w/ launcherpro mem set to high (sense removed)
Stock Kernal 2.6.32.15-g3a8614e
Underclocked w/ SetCPU (screen off 245/screen on 652 max)
Autokiller set to "Extreme"
4g turned off most part of day since i dont get a signal at work.
Turned airplane mode on the second night (went to bed with 6% left...woke up with 6% haha).
Forgot to add
I have always on mobile turned off and background data disabled (only thing noticed with these settings is that 3G wakes up a lil slower when turning on screen and you cannot go to the market unless you turn background data which is okay for me because i pretty much have all the apps i want.)

autokiller...like the old autokiller app used back with the sprint hero. I don't think thats needed with froyo.

Sounds like Fresh 3.2 stock is very good battery life. I have heard this before just never tried it out. 30 hours is a long time on a single charge with moderate usage.

I've heard the same thing, that Froyo does a great job of managing background apps and etc. However, when I look in my systempanel app I still see a lot of background stuff running that I didn't even know about, and a ton of apps running in the background.

I don't get many apps running wild in the background for me. Um...
I'm pretty new to all this and just recently started trying a non-stock setup and it has been giving me really nice battery results. I don't have have any graphs or screen shots, but the first time i tried to fully drain it on purpose had me laughing hysterically. I was running 100% brightness, wifi, gps, bluetooth and pandora. The darn thing ran for like 5-6 hours straight. I couldn't believe it. seemed ridiculous.
took it to disney yesterday on a full charge. made a handfull of calls and a bunch of texts. checked the weather and a few other misc. things.
came home with 80-75 battery life. was very impressed.
i never got this kind of performance on stock.
Here's my setup:
Myn's TwoPointTwo RLS2
netarchy 4.1.9.1 NoHavs Universal

Very nice to see others having success with the battery tweak! It is still my primary go-to for when I know I count on good battery life. Did you happen to check out my guide in my signature?
well from what i read autokiller is not like a "task killer". It modifies/improves how android kills processes if that makes any sense.
been working for me...
We need to be using more descriptive scripts/apps to be comparing such.
For example my ROM is heavily stripped down/modded.
Also consider that everyone should be clearing caches and allowing them to rebuild before testing.
Not to mention anyone who has a flush active (use "top -m 5 -n 1" to see) will have much lower performance.

How long do think your phone needs to rebuild a clean cache? A couple days or so?

Probably a couple hours of usage with some reboots in-between.
I am a newbie on rooted phones. Just rooted the phone to CM7.0.3 Stable and found out that we have a setting to change the Govenors, currently set using SMARTASS with 245/729.
One question, is it nessesary to install apps such as Setcpu to overclock? or it is just adequet to use the setting in CM7 ? Will both conflict each other? Many thanks
Its useful I think, because you can setup CPU speeds for certain things, such as when your screen is off or when the battery drops below a certain threshold.

depends on you need dude. playing games/ watching videos/ hearing music/ simple phone usage/ battery conservation etc. stock one dont have profiles. but 3rd party like set cpu have it. so that it auto switches profiles according to ur present phone status.

SetCPU is much more useful than the cyanogenmod CPU functions, I did use the cyanogenmod one but I didn't see any changes

yes, the good things are the profiles! but I'm not sure if underclocking the processor really saves battery since i've heard that its just a saying/placebo

Yeah I think your right, strangely enough I think it's the same with overclocking, I put mine up to 700ish MHz and the battery still lasts just as long, I expected a reduction in battery life!

How can I improve the battery life of my play with rooting? I don't want apps that kill every background app though as I may want to go back but it would be killed
Sent from my R800i using XDA App
Assuming you're on a stock rom theres a couple things you can do. The easiest would be to root and use Titanium Backup to either freeze or remove the bloatware from your phone as it runs in the background and causes drain. Another would be to look into using some of the tweaks found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1227269
Another option is to try running different firmwares, personally I found the older ones to give me better battery life while others found the oppisite to be true, so try a few till you find one that suits you. A more extreme approach which will yeild far better results is to unlock your bootloader allowing custom ROMs and kernels. With custom kernels you can over and underclock your phone while choosing more effecient governers (like the smartass governer). You can also undervolt your phone which will probably lead to the biggest saving. Custom ROMs can also increase or reduce your battery life, again, try a few. Personally I run at 1.5ghz on smartass, undervolted as much as possible with version 7.1.0.1 of CM7 and have great battery life. Also keep in mind the obvious tweaks such as turning off wifi, gps, 3g, brightness, etc to prolong battery life.
-EDIT- Also on older firmwares there was a problem with using "Automatic" under time and date where it would cause a lot of battery drain so you may want to turn this off if you think it might be a problem
Thanks, but I'd rather not root my phone yet. Thanks anyways

I would say update to .62 firmware it should be up for all around the world yesterday i updated my arc s to it.I was setting up the phone after (flash before the update) and i had to set up everything again and my battery is still on 70% from yesterday (im talking downloading apps, connectin accs and stuff, like 3-4h of usage and around 8h on idle while i was sleeping). My phone isnt rooted and its with stock rom and stuff
I use juice defender ultimate. It allows me to easily get a days usage out of my phone when before i barely got a day

When I'm not using the internet or playing games, I literally set my max speed to half stock using the OnDemand governor, I always keep WiFi off unless I'm home and keep 3G unless I check my facebook or upload an image, 3G usually reactivates then deactivates itself with MMS I believe, not exactly 100% on that, correct me if you'd like. My stock battery lasts for about 30-35 hours under constant texting plus the way I use my phone. When I play games, I set clock speed back to stock and keep 3G off, whether I overclock or not depends on the game.
The UI loses a little FPS but I'm cool with that, and onscreen keyboard response is a little sluggish but that doesn't bother me either. I might try setting my max clock a little higher and try a different governor. My ROM and Kernel are in my signature.
Never really had to "try"... on stock 2.3.4 I usually get incredible game time/usage time just from keeping auto-brightness on.
I am going pretty minimalist on widgets though; nothing but LP Sense's own widgets and a clock., so that may also contribute.

I keep the bar on maximum brightness, but AFAIK, that setting is ignored by the auto brightness.
And no tweaks. TBQH, only tweaks I know how to do is maxing camera quality and spoofing R800a to be an R800i.
