The thing is everyone points a finger at light squared but its not their fault. The real problem is that gps is intruding on lightsquareds spectrum and not the other way around. The fcc and the gps makers want lightsquared to foot the bill for a problem they both have created. Its not fair and the fcc needs to step up take ownership and say sorry we fell asleep at the wheel and make the gps makers foot the bill and give them a timeline of when it needs to be done.
The real story is Falcone bought some property cheap that he thought he could build on, then when he went to build, found there were long-time squatters. He kind of knew about them when he bought the property but thought he could kick them off the land since they weren't supposed to be there, but the squatters were more organized than he thought. Also the other property owners around there like charging higher rents and Falcone was planning on charging lower rents, so those property owners got on the side of the squatters.
This is not taking sides who is right or wrong, just explaining the situation.

I agree 100% lightSquared not at fault but this outcome was expected.
Sprint played it down no big deal throwing LTE 2012 promises.

Either way Sprint will be bringing LTE to customers.
Losing LightSquared will just slow it down.
Losing LightSquared affects how much LTE capacity Sprint will have available.
It won't affect Sprint's LTE deployment schedule because Sprint was the one providing the towers for LightSquared, not the other way around.

Sprint has spectrum in 800 from Nextel and their own 1900 spectrum and finally whatever they can get Clear to convert on 2500.
800 doesn't really have enough for high-bandwidth apps, but they probably would use it to shift things around to make more room at 1900.

sprint was initially rolling it out on 1900 and moving it to 850 when they shut down nextel ..... but the first was 1900 .....they wont touch the 2500 **** ..... if you put lte on it ... it will be just as bad as wimax sprint wont do that they will try to keep the blame on wimax not the frequency

S&P 500 is virtually unchanged with runs up 20+% in between.
IMO there is a big difference between the performance of stocks "in general" and Sprint

There's nothing wrong with a tiered approach, using 2500 to offload data traffic for outdoor users and reserving your more appropriate lower frequencies for indoor use.
Clearwire issue is 2500 was the *only* spectrum they were using.

Even Microsoft has only recently climbed back up to close to "unchanged" for the past 8 years.
That really shows how the past 8 years have been.

Might have to return the phone until the October 7th announcement since this phone doesn't support Rev B. Sucks because I LOVE this phone, but I want it to be future proof, which by it not supporting Rev B it is NOT. The only phone out for Sprint right now that does support it is the EVO 3D.

The Photon I believe DOES have rev B support if they do infact have the Qualcomm MDM6600 like the EVO 3D, but I can't get confirmation on that.
Very disappointed they would use an older chipset that isn't compatible with rev b....

Sadly I agree. I will be getting the Photon 4g soon, not only to compare and contrast with the E4GT, but also so I can at least have that until October 7th and see if that actually is part of Sprints big announcement.
There was a story I read dont remdmber where that it said the evo 3d and the gs2 and the conquer have rev b support the photon was up in the air but I have both so either way I should be good.

According to everything I have read, the chipset in the E4GT does NOT support Rev B, but the chipsets in the EVO 3D and the Photon 4G do (they both have MDM6600).
I made a thread on this very subject yesterday.

So, does this mean the 3G on our devices will be rendered incapable? I get like 1.5-2 Mbps on 3G, I'm cool with that and I also live a 5 minute walk from downtown, so I'm also cloaked in 7-10 WiMax.
Could someone explain if this will make any difference to the way my device functions now?
Edit: Another question, if the ET hadd the 3D's chipset, would we be having the same signal woes?

That it does, but what good is a BRAND NEW phone if it isn't future proof for the next 2 years (now that there are no more premier upgrades and assuming that is Sprints announcement obviously). I will wait it out for another week (literally) and see if there are any leaks to the big announcement, but I will be returning the phone come next week just so I can delay some more for the announcement.

Not sure. There is EVDO advanced which is speeds beyond rev B. I suspect with the SDR's on the netowrk vision they will be able ot do it.
The CDMA radio image on phones is a real time operating system that fits into around 22MB. (The wimax chipset also runs a real time operating system.) I don't see why these couldn't be upgraded with a flash to support rev B or beyond, or why wimax couldn't be flashed to run LTE protocol.

We just got tips from two separate sources, so lets roll with this one. Sprints network vision press conference is scheduled for October 7th of this year, where they are reportedly going to discuss their 4G network plans going forward. What has not been rumored yet is any updates and future upgrades to their existing 3G network. We just learned from our two separate sources that Sprint plans on upgrading their existing EvDO Rev A 3G network to Rev B, enabling much faster speeds on both the up and down link. We were told to expect up to 9Mbps down and 2Mbps up, enabling them to surpass every other 3G network in the US including the “4G” networks T-Mobile and ATT like to say they have. Not all current phones support EVDO Rev B, but we do know at a minimum the Evo 3D and Epic Touch 4G both in fact have Rev B compatible chips out of the box. Lets hope this one pan’s out.
UPDATE: After receiving a few emails, we just wanted to stress something. Take all of this as rumor for now until official. You should always do that! Also we stated the Evo 3D and Epic Touch 4G will work if this all pans out, but its absolutely possible many other phones will. We only can confirm those two.

Yeah sprints network is getting worse by the day. I used to get 1 megs Down on 3g a year ago when I first got my epic. Now on going about 300-400 kbps on my original epic and my epic touch. It seems so slow.

This could very well be possible. I have heard that this is actually why Epic 4G Touch users have been suffering from the dropped voice/data, because Sprint has begun updating their towers. I heard this I believe it was on the Android Central forums by someone from Sprint. I'm too lazy to try to find it but it was a topic regarding the random radio drops on the E4GT. I thought the rep was referring to LTE upgrades but it might also be Rev B. I know they are killing off IDEN next year so who knows.. Sprint doesn't even know what they are doing half of the time.

My data usage sucks during the day. Just more people on the network LOL.
3AM data speeds (home) are about 800-1000Kb/sec
3PM data speeds (home) are about 90-240Kb/sec
4AM data speeds (at work / airport) are abut 800-1100Kb
2PM data speeds (at work / airport) are still about 500-900kb)
Where I live at home there are about 200 buildings all like 20+ floors in probably a mile radius. Wifi channels are cramped so I tend to run my wifi routers at the end of the channel spectrum since most people by default are killing channel 6.
It's really a tower to population issue.
I was told by a sprint employee they were, then here that they're not. Then I see this in a thread...

No they are not. Do not always listen to a Sprint employee 90% of them are flat out stupid. We will not have LTE support. There IS however a SPH-L710 that passed WiFi certs a few weeks back. My guess is that it's the SGS2 but with LTE support and WiMax removed.
Asking a Sprint call center employee to explain or elaborate on a technical detail of their network is like asking a McDonalds counter person to explain how they raised their cows.
They'll give you their 4th grade education mixed with overheard and misunderstood watercooler rumor as fact. "Could you turn off your phone, and pull out the battery? Now restart it! See its fixed, just like our network! Thanks for calling Sprint! Is there anything I can do for you?"***
Oh, btw, if for some reason our phones were capable, it would have been a selling point since release. So, sadly, no.

When it's worded that way, the guy probably thought he was asking if he can switch to an LTE capable phone. If current Wimax phones only needed a firmware update to work on LTE, Sprint would be doing some good PR work so everyone knew it.

I will look for the Doc about this,but I did read some investor fact sheets for sprint transfer to LTE. The big selling point for big investors to put money into sprints LTE was a wider spectrum that would include the bands needed for wimax phones to receive 4g in a sprint LTE only area.
They use a similar system in France, China and other countries where the gov stepped in and funded a super fast wireless broadband system. Are phones would still not be able to roam on LTE but on Sprints network we would still benefit from LTE.

Would that benefit not come from users going to LTE and getting off (for the most part) of the 3G however. If Sprint is in fact doing things somewhat like Verizon is most 3G data is being offloaded (iirc) to the LTE band which frees up 3G.

Those upload speeds look promising. Hopefully once they get LTE up and running smoothly we'll maybe get to see some speeds like these AT&T & T-Mobile guys are posting. :jealous:

I'm surprised there isn't more chatter about Sprint's LTE plans on this forum. I think the success or failure of the NV program will make or break this phone, and Sprint itself. For sure it affects my own decisions about both. The timing will be critical.
p.s. I second the recommendation about the s4gru.com site. It is must reading for anyone who cares about the Sprint rollout, and who wants to make an informed choice. There is also a deep font of knowledge there about RF stuff.

I agree 100%. The rollout of NV & LTE is the crux of Sprint as a network thus far. Def going to be a make or break time for Sprint in the next few quarters, especially with regard to timing. They need to make a significant impact, and soon.

Anyone know what to expect as far as battery consumption goes once LTE goes live? Will it be on par with what we see now on 3g or 4g? Better, worse? Ideas?

It will be the same as 3G. It will switch and run like it too. Just faster. It will be nice. Stronger and at 1900. Nothing like Wimax. They tested out at Alliance in Ft worth. Been playing with it a lot.

Someone in another thread was talking about Sprint's backhaul revisions & how much difference this was going to make during the rollout. Anyone with some insight in this area care to comment? What can we realistically expect to see?

Also, how are people seeing LTE testing? Did you get into settings and change your network to LTE/CDMA? I don't see an LTE radio option (yet) on my sammy. I'm assuming Sprint will push out some update with their LTE light-up (which is also why I'm holding off with root).

I'm averaging .2-.3Mbps in hawaii...disppointing. In San Fran when I was on vacation, I was getting 1.2-2Mbps in the Grand Hyatt. It felt like I was back on T-Mobile lol

Lol @ Silver Shamrock! Once in a while that song'll be going through my head and I'll wonder how it got there. Then it takes me forever to get it out of my head...like now! :banghead:
Not GS3 related, but the EVO LTE shipped with the LTE/CDMA setting enabled so some people with it (or who had it before the GS3) may be able to get the LTE signal in an area that's been going through testing.

Well, turns out that rumors of a MetroPCS and T-Mobile merger weren't completely off base. While we wouldn't expect Deutsche Telekom to announce the sale of its US property any time soon, the German giant has confirmed that its holding talks with America's sixth largest mobile operator to combine the two networks. The prospective deal would involve combining the two into a single entity, with Deutsche Telekom as the majority shareholder. Of course there are significant obstacles in the way, including divergent network technologies and distinctly different marketing strategies. This is, of course, just the latest scene in the ongoing piece of corporate theater that almost saw the struggling magenta carrier absorbed by AT&T. We'll of course be following closely to see if such a move would sit a little better with government regulators. The complete statement from Deutsche Telekom confirming the talks is after the break.

Shares of MetroPCS were up 18 percent at $13.54 as of 12:32 p.m. in New York, giving the company a market value of $4.9 billion. Deutsche Telekom closed 1.3 percent higher on the Frankfurt exchange, after surging as much as 4.4 percent. The former German phone monopoly has a market capitalization of 42.1 billion euros ($54.5 billion). Sprint Nextel slumped as much as 7.1 percent in New York.

Ironically I had JUST heard at work today from someone that late October MetroPCS would be selling the SGS3. I figured he had no idea what he was talking about. About 30 minutes later, I saw this posted on Facebook by Androidandme.
Pretty interesting.

Couple of weeks ago my boss had a meeting regarding about the GS3 LTE they gonna relase it somewhere before the year is over ...
Makes sense for T-Mobile for a couple of reasons.
1. MetroPCS has quite a bit of PCS (1900 MHz) and AWS (1700 MHz) spectrum, both which are needed by T-Mobile now, especially with the refarming and imminent LTE roll out.
2. MetroPCS' customers are all prepaid, so T-Mobile can eventually wean them off of CDMA phones.
3. MetroPCS has already begun rolling out their LTE network, so it will give T-Mobile a nice boost.
4. Gives T-Mobile about 10 million more customers, something they desperately needed.
Nice to see DT is trying their best to improve T-Mobile and make them competitive. Sad to say (being an Android fan), but the next logical step would be getting a deal done with Apple for the iPhone.
Might take a while. Antitrust laws can be degrimental to their plans
I don't think antitrust will be a problem, this is a lot different than the AT&T merger. The reasons pointed out ^^^^^ are great ones. I think the nearly 10m new users will help bring more services/quality. Looks like tmo is making the right moves, getting a new CEO and now this. It's definitely bad news for sprint/boost/virgin though. If all 5 carriers ended up under the tmo banner that could be pretty awesome :good: Consolidating to less carriers could be bad or good but I think the added competitive strength and compatibilities to take on Verizon and AT&T would be good in the long run.
News like this always excites me because it shows tmo is making big moves. This is much better than them being acquired by some evil giant :laugh:

I think this move will definitely help with the push for LTE so I'm happy.

You mean they did already. Money paid and working on implementation of both networks as we speak. For those excited for LTE you got your wish it just depends on when their done setting it in stone, they are already testing in 5 states one of which it Texas.
