Strange restarting at boot up - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

So recently im getting a strange restarting of my phone right after a restart or a boot up.
It doesn't fully shut off and start up..it seems to be like a soft reboot and it just starts up the entire home screen again.
I've noticed 2 weird things on when its happening...usually when the automatic time and date update...or when USB media scan is running or is about to be complete.
I've fixed permissions ..kept my clock speed at stock.
I'm running BeastMod 4.2 with the latest Synergy kernel ...and Go Launcher Ex.
I've flashed other kernels too and it's happened with all.
Eventually ..after a few battery pulls and a bunch of full blown restarts...it stabilizes and runs like it should.
Ideas?

I was having this problem with my first SGS2 and I tried every rom out at the time and nothing worked so I just exchanged it and I haven't had any problems with the new one I got.
Mine started doing since day one.
Did yours just start or did it have that problem from the get go.
Powered by the SGSII....

It happened pretty much after my first kernel flash...and was on stock rom too. That's when I pulled the trigger to go with a custom rom hoping it would fix it.
Dang it...I don't want to have to deal trying to get it back to stock.

Haven't fixed it, just showed him how to go back to stock.
Sorry!
Do you have this problem too?

Do you mind sending me the same message too? I'm having this problem with a few different mods. I had it with Domination 2.0 and with Juggernaut 4.1. It happened really badly when I was at the airport. After I changed my phone from airplane mode to non-airplane mode, and when I started trying to do stuff soon after it started, it would go into an endless reboot loop. It wouldn't restart fully, but the screen would go off for a few seconds, then I would see my lockscreen again. It would go through this process about 4-7 times before finally stabilizing.
I really don't want to get a new phone because I just paid to have an invisible shield installed around the full body less than a week ago. Thanks!

Did you have this problem being stock or just after flashing roms?

Interesting enough.. I did a test.. I restarted WITHOUT my external SD card... and guess what... of booted up fine. Looks like I have something going on with my external card.. but it works just fine... so a conflict somewhere. I went through the card last night and deleted some stuff... but after I put the card back in... boom...started to happen again.
I'm either going to try to copy things over and format the card.. or just get a new card.
Try it out and let me know what you guys get too.

Getting a new card wont do much if the data on the card is what's causing your phone to go haywire.
Do you have apps stored on your SD card?
Sent from my Hercules using XDA App

I'm sure I have some on there... app...but I've checked any folders that seem "off"...and delted a lot of those... so mainly what's left are pics and music... haven't had a chance to format the card to see if that works... and I could be totally off base with this too. Just trying different things before the last resort of getting a replacement phone.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA App

I have been having this exact same problem for a while now. I have tried it on three phones that I've had (original, replacement, and another new one). No matter what rom/kernel i've tried, same thing all the time. I have wiped many a times, fresh installs, formatted memory card, tried without memory card, and same thing. I have never had this problem with HTC phones and really have no idea what to do anymore. Just how weird that everything works well on stock.

Well... mine for sure is my SD card gone wonky... I've done 5 seperate no SD inserted tests... and then insert SD after its already booted up and working fine.
Once I inserted the SD... it would go through the scan and crash.
After a bunch or retries... battery pulls etc.. it finally settles down and works fine.
For yours that its not the SD... call T-Mobile... they were ready to replace mine.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA App

If the memory card was corrupt, wouldn't the phone have issues even on a stock non-rooted phone? I'm asking cuz my phone works great on stock non-rooted, but once I root and upload a custom rom, everything goes haywire. Im trying to find out what the problem may be.
Sent from my iCrap killer

Actually this problem for me started even when I was on a stock ROM...I'm not sure how long after rooting... I wonder if rooting had something to do with it? This issue is one of the reasons why I went ahead on to a custom ROM thinking it would fix it... it was fine for a while.. then started up again.
I'm not sure. I haven't bought a new external SD yet to test my own theory.. haha

Phone continues to lock up

Alright so ive used the search and couldnt find anything. I have a rooted s2 running eagles blood v1.1 and last night i flashed over lite'ing theme and now my phone screen will shut off and wont allow me to turn it back on, i have to hold the power button and it restarts. Ive reflashed eagleblood even recovered back to stock with just root and it continues to do it.
Any help would be much appriciated :/

Probably best to post this in the rom developer's thread. Any number of things can cause this behavior.
I would but my post count is low and i am unable to post there, so for now i am seeking help here.
ive tried un-rooting the phone, flashing the stock rom and no root, but have the same issue.

I'm having the same problem on rooted stock rom. It's getting more and more frequent. The phone just refuses to come back on after going to sleep. If I plug in the power/usb cable, it actually makes the connected noise as if it's actually awake but the screen stays off.
I've uninstalled all cpu and memory tweaking apps and am still experiencing the issue.

ive tried everything, flashed over and over, un rooted, different roms etc nothing has worked so i just used zedomax's stock rom to restore the phone ( problem still continues) called tmobile and will have my replacement within a day or so, nothing else i can do i suppose.
though my problem did seem to start right when i flashed lite'ing theme for eaglesblood (not saying that caused it )

im starting to think it is a phone issue myself, going to find out Tuesday when my new one arrives though i am hoping it was an error on my part because this phone has the chance to be fantastic.
I was having random shutdowns with my 1st phone, the thing is I never did have stock long enough (rooted after 45min of gettjng) to see if it was the phone or root/rom(s).
My second phone is working great without any random shutdowns, but I'm still stock(running on second day of testing).
Gonna root and flash tomorrow and hope everything remains the same if not back it goes before my remorse period ends.
I really think it's phone related rather then a rom because I've never had this problem with previous phones.
So I would suggest on exchanging it.

Can someone help me pinpoint why my phone is constantly rebooting?

I have had my epic for about a month now and I love it but sometimes it will reboot like 5 times a day and sometimes it will not even go back on unless I pull the battery for a couple seconds. It is rooted and I am not going to lie it NEVER did this before I rooted it. I have tried plenty of different roms and after a while they all reboot. Most run fine for the first couple days. I will say that it never reboots when I am using it its funny but it seems to only do it when it is in my pocket. I always know when it rebooted because my headset gives the disconnected beep then I look at my phone and sure enough I see the boot screen. This is becoming very annoying any help would be greatly appreciated.
What rom/kernel/radio are you using?
I am using the Phantom Hacker blazer rom v 3.4 with the stock rouge el26 kernal. Not sure about the radio because I never touched that. I am also running the venum minimal black theme.
Its funny because sometimes it will go days and run great then one day boom 5 restarts before the afternoon hits.
Restore to stock and see if you still have the problem, if you do, take it into sprint.
My phone hasn't rebooted but I have experienced the sleep of death a couple of times in the past week. I don't understand what's causing it either but meh, it's not been to often.

Could a bad sd card be causing this? I ask because one time when i went to use my phone the sd card was not detected and i had to reboot to get it back. Thats probably a problem with the phone too.. I love this phone but i am getting real tired of its bull****.

When I first got the phone I didnt root it for about a week and there wasnt a reboot in sight. As soon as I rooted it, this crap started. Is this just something people with rooted phones need to put up with?
Well my sd card just failed and upon some research I have learned that a failing sd card can cause the phone to reboot so I am going to run it for a while without it and see if the problem still persists.

I have been rooted for over a month or so and have not had a single reboot. So no, that is not normal.
I am guessing something is wrong with your root or your rom install.

I believe it was rebooting because of a bad sd card. I took it out and have not had one reboot since. Also the sd card was messing up all day. I tried to acess it and it says sd card damaged. Do you know if a bad sd card can cause reboots? From my research allot of people say it can.
Yea, if its giving your errors, and the phone is rebooting, and removing it from the phone corrects the rebooting issue, that seems logical that the SD card was causing the problem.
Reformat the card and see if that resolves the issue.
Well I took the sd card out and no reboots in almost 24 hours!! I hope there is nothing wrong with this phone because man do I love it. Just a question though, could the fact that it was rebooting with the card in there be caused by the fact that I took that card out of my old Evo 4g and just put it straight into this phone without formatting it or anything? Or you think it's just a bad card all together?
I took my sdcard from my old epic,no reboots, im rooted only, no clockwork yet, I have had the phone about two weeks, I would be very upset if it started rebooting, that's one of the reason I upgrade I was flash happy with my old epic, new rom runs great for a couple days than here comes the problem

of course you should put a "clean" sd card in your phone, when you change models...there are all sorts of useless files from your evo on their, and no doubt that would cause weird behavior in your current phone..

Ya I see what ya mean. I am going to run the phone for a couple days just to make sure it isn't a problem with the phone and if all is good I will format the card and put it back in the phone and see what happens. You all have been very helpful though as always, I appreciate it!
I wouldn't go that far. I had the same BS when I first rooted. I've been using Strongsteve's blue ROM and haven't experienced ANY problems since ie. Ghost rebooting, Los, nothing. Its made me love the phone again....trust me I was ready to throw the thing in the garbage.

Having mine for only 20 hours and Rooted with Darkside ROM installed, I have not had this issue.
p.s. It took only 10 minutes of playing with Stock ROM to decided that it needed to go.
I still have that issue on my device. I have them off and on but far between. It tends to happen if I am using a app to over or under clock my device.
Mine randomly did this. Your /data partition may be corrupted. If thats the case it will get worse and worse to where it will just reboot as it trys to start almost immediately over and over again...
There are some tutorials how to fix it

HTC DHD freezes up!

Hi all!
Since a couple of days my HTC DHD has been freezing up. Most of times it happens when i take it out of sleep mode. The bottom buttons (home, menu, back and search) do light up, but the phone doesn't respond at all. Sometimes this also happens when using the phone. The screen moves slowely, like a frame every couple of seconds before it freezes up completely. Only way to get it back on is taking out the battery and put it back in. I have installed Cyanogenmod 7.2 about a week and a half ago so i thought the problem might lie there but i switched back to Cyanogenmod 7.0 (which i have been using for the past 6 months or so without any problem at all) and the device still freezes up. This happens twice of more every day! I have wiped everything and updated all my apps and the problem still occurs. I'm really clueless on how to solve this problem.
I can provide a logcat but i have never used that before so i'm not sure on how to do this. Even then, how can i make a logcat when the device freezes up and i need to take out the battery?
Any help would be much much appreciated!!
Thanks!
Did you do a full wipe; all caches, Dalvik e.t.c

The best way to get a logcat is using adb and perhaps a terminal emulator.
Try using the phone without the sd card to see if the problem persists.

Thanks for your replies! Sorry for the late response but had to install SDK and get it up and running.
@ GuyInTheCorner, Yes did all that except for a full wipe. Don't want to loose all my data.
@ Teichopsia, Ok did what you said and i have Logcat running now. Just tested it and it seems to be working. It's huge tho with only a couple of seconds running! Now i have to wait for the device to freeze up again and i can get to my computer while it doing it. As soon as that happens i will make a logcat and post it here.
Thanks for you help so far!
You've changed roms without full wiping? Try it without the sd card to see if there is something in the sd card causing the problem. However, you will probably need to full wipe. If after the full wipe problem persists, check without the sd card, if so, wipe the sd card.
The logcat will help figure where the problem is, but I don't know how to read one.

Ok, so it took a while but my DHD finally froze up again while i had acces to a computer. So i did a logcat. Results are in the Logcat.txt file. I hope anyone out there can read it and figure out what the problem is. Many thanks in advance!!
I started a thread for a similar problem ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1734707 ) but the behaviour you describe is identical to what was going on with my DHD.
Try disabling Wifi and see if it stalls up on you - Mine runs great so long as Wifi is turned off. With it turned on I get random freezes, and the screen not turning on with the backlit buttons lit. Removal of the battery is about the only way to get it to respond again.
I tried changing ROMs, kernels, recoveries, radios and bootloaders with varying results but nothing seemed to fix it.
I ALWAYS full wipe and clear any files relating to the previous ROM off the SD card when changing ROMs.
On 2.2 ROMs Wifi would just turn itself on and off, the phone would not freeze though. Wifi was mostly un-usable as data didn't seem to transfer 80% of the time that it was turned on.
On 2.3.x ROMs Wifi started out doing the same thing as on Froyo, but after about a week it started to freeze the phone and would not return from sleep.
On 4..0.x ROMs Wifi would generally cause a complete freeze of the phone almost as soon as it was turned on.
I hope you find a solution. Mine is the 24 month warranty.

Sounds exactly like my problem. I see you have done way more research on this problem then me looking at the thread you started. So i guess the problem lies in the WIFI hardware then. If so, i could send it back for repairs. I also have 24 months warranty. Problem i have, my device fell into a bucket of water when i had it just 3 weeks (about 16 months ago) It never gave me any problems tho! Worked just fine until now. All my warranty labels turned red. I could pull them out and replace them of course. Or tell HTC that it got wet during rain and it was in my pocket. But that wouldn't be honest now would it. A friend of mine has a DHD as well but he tells me he never has this problem which makes me guess the problem only occurs with some builds of the device.
I have been using my WIFI a lot lately for tethering on my laptop. So i will try your solution of turning WIFI off first and just see what happens. Also i will go back to stock rom when ICS becomes available. See what happens ten.
For now thanks a lot Max-E-Moose for your help. I will update this thread if something occurs or i find a solution. :good:

Nope didn't try that. I just ordered a new Samsung 32gb class 10 SD card. Should arrive tomorrow. Will try that first. Maybe it helps.
Thanks anyway.
Any luck ONeils? Updatey?
Due to where I am situated, I have not had the opportunity to bring my phone in yet so am still using mobile data almost all of the time.
I didn't mention before, because I forgot about it, but have you tried using WiFix Manager from the market? I read in another thread that this solved a similar problem for some people.
I think the process is: install WiFix, install the fix from the app, then restart the phone. It should be that simple, if it works - it does nothing for my poor DHD.
Currently using JellyTime Beta 7 and I have noticed that I can turn my WiFi on, and use it for a while, but if I forget to turn it off then the phone doesn't want to wake up once the screen turns off. Wifi hasn't froze the phone entirely on this ROM... Yet.

Battery died and now my phone stays at the booting without starting?

As described at the title.
The Phone ran out of battery and when I plugged back the charger and turned it on... it stays in the AOKP *swagger activated* logo running there forever without booting.
Please help, I hope I don't have to wipe anything because I don't have a late backup
Turn the phone off by pulling out battery. Plug in charger, and leave it for an hour or so. You should be good.
Yeah, can you get into Recovery? If so, just try wiping cache & dalvik. Also make sure to charge your battery at least an hour as stated.
My phone gets goofy when it completely drains.
I tried and still the same

If you took the time to create a nandroid you could just restore. If not, and wiping cache doesn't help, try a dirty install of your current ROM. Last resort is full wipe and reinstall.
A 100% battery discharge won't kill phone OS. Turn off the phone, kill your instinct to check it, keep it on charger for a couple hours, until it says battery full. And only then turn it back on.
What if the battery didn't died actually and it just shut down and now it's having problems to run back normally?
Because I'm pretty sure I saw the battery low but not over kill low, then the phone shut down and didn't wanted to power back on.
Anyways I'm leaving it charging... now.
Ok in worse case scenario, can I do a back up from recovery and then wipe it all and reinstall AOKP and run the backup recovery and get back to exactly how it was before? right?!
Don't worry too much. Normally batteries don't deep discharge. For some reason, looks like yours did. I let mine shut down by itself once in a while. Its perfectly alright... At the most you might need a new battery.
But like you said, if its a system problem, and you are able to get into recovery, copy another ROM zip on your external SD, boot into recovery n flash it.
Did you apply any CPU settings like UV or OC?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium
Nope, the phone havent had any other software, just the rooting process and AOKP and the recovery files.

The only other problem im having is that my contacts tends to go away, like if it's bugged.
I import them with GO CONTACTS and then today for example I go to my contacts and it's all blank.
What it's happening with this phone?

Search the q & a forum for a missing contacts/contacts disappeared thread. It was up a week or so ago. Not sure if it was resolved but it's worth finding and reading over. I only use Gmail to backup/restore contacts
I have seen at times that if the system runs the battery dead that it will corrupt Some files making the phone get stuck in a boot loop with a need to reflash.
As for your contacts try using a different backup program. Like super backup.
Try opening the XML file (exported contacts file) in excel. You should be able to view so your contacts there and make sure its all in place.
