HTC DHD freezes up! - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all!
Since a couple of days my HTC DHD has been freezing up. Most of times it happens when i take it out of sleep mode. The bottom buttons (home, menu, back and search) do light up, but the phone doesn't respond at all. Sometimes this also happens when using the phone. The screen moves slowely, like a frame every couple of seconds before it freezes up completely. Only way to get it back on is taking out the battery and put it back in. I have installed Cyanogenmod 7.2 about a week and a half ago so i thought the problem might lie there but i switched back to Cyanogenmod 7.0 (which i have been using for the past 6 months or so without any problem at all) and the device still freezes up. This happens twice of more every day! I have wiped everything and updated all my apps and the problem still occurs. I'm really clueless on how to solve this problem.
I can provide a logcat but i have never used that before so i'm not sure on how to do this. Even then, how can i make a logcat when the device freezes up and i need to take out the battery?
Any help would be much much appreciated!!
Thanks!

Did you do a full wipe; all caches, Dalvik e.t.c

The best way to get a logcat is using adb and perhaps a terminal emulator.
Try using the phone without the sd card to see if the problem persists.

Thanks for your replies! Sorry for the late response but had to install SDK and get it up and running.
@ GuyInTheCorner, Yes did all that except for a full wipe. Don't want to loose all my data.
@ Teichopsia, Ok did what you said and i have Logcat running now. Just tested it and it seems to be working. It's huge tho with only a couple of seconds running! Now i have to wait for the device to freeze up again and i can get to my computer while it doing it. As soon as that happens i will make a logcat and post it here.
Thanks for you help so far!

You've changed roms without full wiping? Try it without the sd card to see if there is something in the sd card causing the problem. However, you will probably need to full wipe. If after the full wipe problem persists, check without the sd card, if so, wipe the sd card.
The logcat will help figure where the problem is, but I don't know how to read one.

Meh, chalk one up for you
I agree with Teichopsia, do a FULL WIPE without SD Card to see what happens and take it from there

Ok, so it took a while but my DHD finally froze up again while i had acces to a computer. So i did a logcat. Results are in the Logcat.txt file. I hope anyone out there can read it and figure out what the problem is. Many thanks in advance!!

I started a thread for a similar problem ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1734707 ) but the behaviour you describe is identical to what was going on with my DHD.
Try disabling Wifi and see if it stalls up on you - Mine runs great so long as Wifi is turned off. With it turned on I get random freezes, and the screen not turning on with the backlit buttons lit. Removal of the battery is about the only way to get it to respond again.
I tried changing ROMs, kernels, recoveries, radios and bootloaders with varying results but nothing seemed to fix it.
I ALWAYS full wipe and clear any files relating to the previous ROM off the SD card when changing ROMs.
On 2.2 ROMs Wifi would just turn itself on and off, the phone would not freeze though. Wifi was mostly un-usable as data didn't seem to transfer 80% of the time that it was turned on.
On 2.3.x ROMs Wifi started out doing the same thing as on Froyo, but after about a week it started to freeze the phone and would not return from sleep.
On 4..0.x ROMs Wifi would generally cause a complete freeze of the phone almost as soon as it was turned on.
I hope you find a solution. Mine is the 24 month warranty.

Thanks a lot for your quick and thorough reply.

Sounds exactly like my problem. I see you have done way more research on this problem then me looking at the thread you started. So i guess the problem lies in the WIFI hardware then. If so, i could send it back for repairs. I also have 24 months warranty. Problem i have, my device fell into a bucket of water when i had it just 3 weeks (about 16 months ago) It never gave me any problems tho! Worked just fine until now. All my warranty labels turned red. I could pull them out and replace them of course. Or tell HTC that it got wet during rain and it was in my pocket. But that wouldn't be honest now would it. A friend of mine has a DHD as well but he tells me he never has this problem which makes me guess the problem only occurs with some builds of the device.
I have been using my WIFI a lot lately for tethering on my laptop. So i will try your solution of turning WIFI off first and just see what happens. Also i will go back to stock rom when ICS becomes available. See what happens ten.
For now thanks a lot Max-E-Moose for your help. I will update this thread if something occurs or i find a solution. :good:

Nope didn't try that. I just ordered a new Samsung 32gb class 10 SD card. Should arrive tomorrow. Will try that first. Maybe it helps.
Thanks anyway.

Any luck ONeils? Updatey?
Due to where I am situated, I have not had the opportunity to bring my phone in yet so am still using mobile data almost all of the time.
I didn't mention before, because I forgot about it, but have you tried using WiFix Manager from the market? I read in another thread that this solved a similar problem for some people.
I think the process is: install WiFix, install the fix from the app, then restart the phone. It should be that simple, if it works - it does nothing for my poor DHD.
Currently using JellyTime Beta 7 and I have noticed that I can turn my WiFi on, and use it for a while, but if I forget to turn it off then the phone doesn't want to wake up once the screen turns off. Wifi hasn't froze the phone entirely on this ROM... Yet.

[Q]Devastating HTC Desire HD Problem[Q]

After being on a few websites, I found a few people saying that this problem seemed to be hardware related, however I now know this is not true, as a hard-reset has managed to get functionality back again.
Anyway, I was taking pictures on my phone today, and I've only had it for two days. I took about 7 pictures with the flash on, and the saturation edited a little bit to give my pictures more colour, ect. Anyway on the 8th photo or however many it was my phone decided to turn off. This only happened if the flash was turned on, however if I went into the flashlight application the LED's worked fine... The only way to fix was by doing a hard-reset + the phone wouldn't turn on unless I removed the battery. As of now, my camera is working fine, but if this happens again, what should I do?
I heard of that. It seems to happen sometimes when the battery is low. Try charging your battery and see if this happens again

Ah, thanks. At the time u was suffering from a low battery, and I was out on the country roads about 20 miles away from my house, that's a big help because if it happens again I know not to reset my phone. Thanks mate.

OMW the drama of that title.
I was expecting a Bollywood script. Damn it, i want my money back
i had exatly the same problem on my desire hd with leedroid on.
i would take a photo, the first couple would be ok then bam the phone was off. to restart the battery would have to be removed. i cleared dalvik, etc and eventually reflashed with no change.
i gave up then all of a sudden i was getting sdcard unextpected eject on mp3 playback.....
this kept happening so i put the card into my pc and ran scan disk, no probs.....
i then decided to put my other 16gb card in and put that card into my archos a5a. when copying over i noticed the proccedure would freeze, then all of a sudden my open disk would show up. the card works fine when cool but as soon as fast moving data and lots of it (8mp pics for example) it would fail.
im currently waiting for a rma on that card as i have noticed it has a five year warrenty (pny) - could this be your problem?

Evo Issues Random Restarting and Freezing Power button not turning on Screen

I've been having issues with the phone turning off randomly and restarting, seems to do it when it gets hot. Also the phone not responding to power button. Doesn't matter which rom I flash it keeps happening. Thinking about converting back to stock to see if it helps. But I'm unsure why this started happening all the sudden any one else have similar issues??
How often is it happening? Often enough that you may be able to troubleshoot it? Such as.. turn of gps, mobile data, sync, then slowly add them back in one at a time to see what could be causing the problem.

My wife's Evo had that exact same problem, but hers is unrooted. We brought it into Sprint and she's getting a brand new phone tonight. They tried running diagnostics on it, but came up with nothing, so that was their last resort...
This seems to only happen to me on aosp roms and not sense.

[Q] My boot loops don't taste good...with or without milk...what is the reason?
My real questions are:
Has anybody experienced my experience and how did they solve the issue?
and
Can someone help me diagnose the issue?
I am seeking help on this topic also.
I have battled and one once before but don't know what was the actual fix.
I tried in the past, couple weeks ago, to upgrade to the new 2.3 roms and have had a lot of trouble with the ol' "random reboots". I don't recall what rom exactly that I tried to put on there but I don't believe that the rom was the issue in this situation do to flashing other roms and encountering the exact same reboot issues.
I originally undervolted using vipermod, updated to the new radios from the present "All Radios" post that was grouped together and then flashed a kernal over the rom that I was trying to use.
I got it booted up no problem, went through the setup and then when it was trying to get the reception and/or 3g established it rebooted...the white HTC boot screen appeared and rebooted over and over again.
I tried reflashing the rom, flashing a different rom and so on.
I sort of ruled out the radios after downgrading them and not getting any different results and started to think it was an overheating issue because when I would leave it off for a while it would work longer before the boot party began.
I read something on another thread that when you remove the battery for so long and boot it back up, it clears the internal memory or something similar to that. I searched the market for a boot logger program and found bootlog, I believe that was the name, and checked the log after pulling the battery and letting it boot up all the way. After reviewing the log I noticed that it had stuff like lowmem, deathpening, killing and what not. I then came to the conclusion that it was more than likely the memory, not a clue if it is internal or talking about the temporary stuff that it may store on the sdcard.
I then decided to check out the partitioning of the sdcard. I decided to raise the swap to something like 1 gig and the ext to 2 gig.
I loaded up CM7, nothing extra, and all was good besides maybe one or two reboots that ended up booting all the way up instead of doing the loop at the white HTC screen.
But now, I followed the instructions that was left on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1071547&page=1161 (no blame to the post or rom, just a reference) so I can try out a new sense rom...and...if you don't know by now...mayhem/boot loops. I cannot upload any of the logs because I followed the partition instructions.
I have upgraded and downgraded the PRI and the radios with no luck, I am now going to try the partition swap size again and report back.
I am writing this prior so I can get some helpful suggestions coming my way in the mean time, in case me and the Captain can't make this happen, or be able to post my method to fix my scenario so others may benefit.
Thanks in advance.
EDIT: I have S-OFF, HBOOT 0.97, radio 2.15.00.11.19
I still have been having tons of issues and I've gone back to roms I ran 6 months ago n still having the same problem. It just randomly shuts off and turns back on sometimes like 5 or 6 times in a row. This is getting very frustrating I'm gonna have to put it back to stock and take it in. I want to smash my evo with a hammer and then blow torch the sh*t out of it.
I'm having the same problem, only with the Inspire 4G though. I notice mine only happens when the screen turns off.. I'm thinking mine might be an underclocking issue or something because if I have an unread message or if the led is on or flashing at all, it works fine.. Wait, no, it just did it again fml
This is why I dont want to upgrade my radios, you say you ruled out those, but your phone is still jackin up on old roms.
It jus seems I never see an issue that cant be solved by reflashing the rom or a redownload the rom and flash, unless......you mess with the radios, then u get issues like this..im no expert, but this is what I see.
....Radios scare me!
If it was me I would proly unroot it and bring it in, or
Copy SD card to your PC.
Format SD.
Run an RUU that matches your original radios.
Copy SD card data back.
Re-root.
Should be brand new then....
EDIT: Scratch that I wouldnt unroot and bring it in. Easier to runn the RUU like I said

Never flashed a radio unless a rom came packaged with one... Couldn't tell you which one because I've flashed a bunch already seeing if that was the problem or not. I'm partitioning my SD card right now to see if that helps.. Oh, and I bought my phone off eBay cause AT&T sucks at life and it's not a year wait anymore to upgrade. God how I miss Cingular.
Think i figured it out on my end... I don't think my phone likes to be underclocked so I bumped up the mhz a little for screen off and I haven't had a problem yet

URGENT help with boot screen, how to log it?

[Warming up]
I've been having problems lately trying to figure out the problem..
So, first i suspected the SD card, doesn't seem like my original 16GB card was the problem, because i bought 2 new 32GB Micro SDHC cards already, same problem..
[Now the problem]
80% of the times when i reboot and go into recovery and flash a couple of roms, or reboots in general, i for the most part get stuck in Bootscreen, if i try to wipe Cache and Dalvik-Cache, it sometimes solves the problem and 20% of the times i can get into the system, the other 80% of the times that i actually succeed into getting the rom to load up, i mostly get stuck there aswell, untill it reboots the phone, and im back at the imfamous bootscreen...
So, i've figured, is there anyway for me to log the stuff that is happening at the boot screen? because im curious to what the problem might be..
[The things i've done already]
Everything is formated as EXT4, and has been so since Mike introduced it with his rom..
i've tried Mikes rom, Unity, Honey roms, Coredroid, RCmix, all the same on all of them.
I always wipe my phone fully before i boot the rom, mostly with Mikes Super Wipe Script, but sometimes with the wipe zip mentioned from the Rom Dev explicitly telling me to use that..
I always let the rom boot 2 times before i start flashing themes and stuff..
Just going Stock rom doesn't help either, i've tried that aswell, no change.
I've cleaned the phone, from top to toe.. (brushed and cleaned with special liquid)
I've tried different Micro SDHC cards, 1 of em was a counterfeit card, the newest one works just flawlessly, i've benchmarked, checked for errors and even done a Bluff check on it, all working 100% nominal.
CPU running at 998Mhz, just incase..
[Ending]
So, does anyone have any suggestions?.. Does anyone have any way for me to get logs of the Bootscreen (as its a wallpaper, i have no chance in actually seeing what is happening)
Are there any ADB commands i could use to check errors in bootscreen? Any diagnostics tests?
Maybe even a way to refresh the Bootloader with ADB commands?..
ANY help would be greatly appreciated!!
You have some pretty serious problems here. Not that I could diagnose it, but it sounded like hardware related problems to me. Btw, here's the link about boot log you've requested.

I'll run some logs tomorrow and see whats up with the phone, i actually got the phone running optimal again with yet another fresh rom flash and it all seems to work, have only restarted the phone 2 times, as im afraid of restarting the phone and get stuck again..
If i do get stuck, im stuck forever, and have to try above mentions i've done before, wipe cache and dalvik-cache, sometimes this works, most of the times it doesn't, and i end up fully wiping a couple of times and reflashing roms untill it works.. (I know this might sound like an SD card problem, but its not, i've gone thrue this with a couple of programs)
Anyway, a thousand thanks for that link, will probably help me quiet some..

Aye, this phone i have in my hands right now has already been in for repairs before and they changed the PCB of the phone, got a new IMEI number and all that..
But i do have warranty left for it, but i have to iron out the problem before i send it in, don't wanna risk being sent back to me and i have to pay lots of $ for their trouble (you know how HTC 3rd party repair centers works).. Plus they might actually scratch my screen some more as they did when i last sent it in...
Well, i have another "minor" problem with the phone aswell, not sure if its my phone or a general new cosmetic problem occurring on phones sent in for repairs, as i haven't noticed it on my earlier phone (Well theoretically the same phone).. Is that when i look at the screen in pitch black moving screens, i can see a distinct line going from Top Right to Bottom Left corner, and the Top Left side of the screen is black, and the lower right part of the screen is black/grey, you can see the difference, but not noticeable when your actually booted up, only in the Bootanimation part is it visible, i've tried different Bootanimations and everyone that has a Black background has this cosmetically problem.
Aah crap, Wall of text..
Haha just gonna add that i installed both apps you mentioned earlier, and the phone feels more like a Dev phone now, but anyway, it all worked great, not sure if it logged anything yet, didnt find anything in the app yet if it does..
I noticed something strange though, Gsensor Enabled, then right before bootup, Gsensor Disabled..
Have no idea why it does that, have no problem with Gsensor though..
Edit:
6 successful restarts!! That's something new!
I have no idea why its behaving this good.. Well time will tell..

Can someone help me pinpoint why my phone is constantly rebooting?

I have had my epic for about a month now and I love it but sometimes it will reboot like 5 times a day and sometimes it will not even go back on unless I pull the battery for a couple seconds. It is rooted and I am not going to lie it NEVER did this before I rooted it. I have tried plenty of different roms and after a while they all reboot. Most run fine for the first couple days. I will say that it never reboots when I am using it its funny but it seems to only do it when it is in my pocket. I always know when it rebooted because my headset gives the disconnected beep then I look at my phone and sure enough I see the boot screen. This is becoming very annoying any help would be greatly appreciated.
What rom/kernel/radio are you using?
I am using the Phantom Hacker blazer rom v 3.4 with the stock rouge el26 kernal. Not sure about the radio because I never touched that. I am also running the venum minimal black theme.
Its funny because sometimes it will go days and run great then one day boom 5 restarts before the afternoon hits.
Restore to stock and see if you still have the problem, if you do, take it into sprint.
My phone hasn't rebooted but I have experienced the sleep of death a couple of times in the past week. I don't understand what's causing it either but meh, it's not been to often.

Im using the hack that was built into the rom and none of calks scripts. I should also note that sometimes whsn it reboots it drains a good 50% of the battery.

Could a bad sd card be causing this? I ask because one time when i went to use my phone the sd card was not detected and i had to reboot to get it back. Thats probably a problem with the phone too.. I love this phone but i am getting real tired of its bull****.

When I first got the phone I didnt root it for about a week and there wasnt a reboot in sight. As soon as I rooted it, this crap started. Is this just something people with rooted phones need to put up with?
Well my sd card just failed and upon some research I have learned that a failing sd card can cause the phone to reboot so I am going to run it for a while without it and see if the problem still persists.

I have been rooted for over a month or so and have not had a single reboot. So no, that is not normal.
I am guessing something is wrong with your root or your rom install.

I believe it was rebooting because of a bad sd card. I took it out and have not had one reboot since. Also the sd card was messing up all day. I tried to acess it and it says sd card damaged. Do you know if a bad sd card can cause reboots? From my research allot of people say it can.
Yea, if its giving your errors, and the phone is rebooting, and removing it from the phone corrects the rebooting issue, that seems logical that the SD card was causing the problem.
Reformat the card and see if that resolves the issue.
Well I took the sd card out and no reboots in almost 24 hours!! I hope there is nothing wrong with this phone because man do I love it. Just a question though, could the fact that it was rebooting with the card in there be caused by the fact that I took that card out of my old Evo 4g and just put it straight into this phone without formatting it or anything? Or you think it's just a bad card all together?
I took my sdcard from my old epic,no reboots, im rooted only, no clockwork yet, I have had the phone about two weeks, I would be very upset if it started rebooting, that's one of the reason I upgrade I was flash happy with my old epic, new rom runs great for a couple days than here comes the problem

of course you should put a "clean" sd card in your phone, when you change models...there are all sorts of useless files from your evo on their, and no doubt that would cause weird behavior in your current phone..

I wouldn't go that far. I had the same BS when I first rooted. I've been using Strongsteve's blue ROM and haven't experienced ANY problems since ie. Ghost rebooting, Los, nothing. Its made me love the phone again....trust me I was ready to throw the thing in the garbage.

Random restarting can happen with custom ROMs. It's happened to me with CM a while back. With you being on a custom ROM, that may be what is causing your issue.
Only way to really determine the cause is to view your logcat, which is tricky because it is cleared on a reboot. This app: aLogcat (free) might be useful. You can set it to save your logcats to your sdcard in intervals, that way it is persistant through a reboot.
You can monitor that and see what exactly is causing your issue.
You can also flash back to stock and see if the issue persists.
If you are running stock rom then your main board might be going bad. Someone sent me an article the other day about this happening to people. Apparently Samsung fixes it for free.
