Epic 4g Touch vs Verizon Galaxy Nexus... - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Hello everyone,
Like most of you here I bought the Epic 4g Touch soon after it came out after waiting for quite a while for the Galaxy S2 to be released domestically. I was aware of the Nexus being released but I chose not to wait. I am still happy with my phone, but I want to know if anyone could do an honest assessment of how these phones stack up. I have a few questions. I think on balance, I am still happy with the E4GT, but I am wondering if I am missing out on much.
1. How is the hardware different? From what I have gathered, the chips in both phones are nearly identical. Technically, both phones are very close in terms of capabilities. Is this correct?
The screens are about the same size but the Nexus has a higher resolution screen. Is there a great advantage to a 720p screen on a phone of this size over what our phone has? Is it really noticeable?
I have heard that the camera on the Epic 4g Touch is superior to the Galaxy Nexus. That being said, is the camera on our phones pretty much the best on all smartphones? Do you agree that the camera on our phone is solidly superior to the Nexus?
Overall, which phone would you say has the superior hardware?
2. I think the network is one major reason for getting the Galaxy Nexus. I think we all know that Verizon's internet speeds are great and the coverage is pretty much the best. And we know that LTE speeds are amazing. However, I am wondering if you think that having unlimited data is more important than faster speeds?
Where I live, I don't usually have 4g coverage. Call quality is quite good for me. Where I did get 4g coverage, speeds for me were about 6-7 mbps. That seems very fast to me. Maybe if LTE offers something like 15-20 mbps, I cannot see how one would appreciate this difference relative to normal data requirements.
Do you think that the speed difference between the Epic 4g Touch on Sprint and the Galaxy Nexus on Verizon is dramatic enough to overcome the data cap?
If I had access to consistent Wimax 4g speeds would that be preferable to Verizon LTE with a data cap given that wimax is more than sufficient for all normal cell phone tasks? Maybe I don't understand, but I find it hard to see how the increased speeds for internet on a cell phone is so important to so many people. Isn't speed beyond say 5mbps really overkill for a cell phone? What are people doing on their phones to warrant greater speeds?
I am sure I would appreciate faster 3g and more consistent speeds, but I am not sure whether the Verizon network with a hard data cap would, on balance, be a much better deal than I am getting with Sprint.
What are your thoughts on this?
3. For certain, the greatest selling point for the Galaxy Nexus is Ice Cream Sandwich. I already know that it is far superior to Gingerbread. But if and when we are able to get it running on the E4GT, would that render the two phones mostly identical in all important areas? Do you anticipate Sprint releasing an official update soon?
If not, what will it take to get a talented developer to release it for our phones? What is the current time frame for a release? Judging from past experience, is an unofficial release of a major OS update lacking in any significant way from an official release?
In conclusion, what are your thoughts on our phone, the Epic 4g Touch, and how it compares to the Galaxy Nexus on the issues I laid out here? And, given we have seen a number of impressive phones being released in the past couple of months, are you happy with your phones still? Do you wish you had waited?
And, one final question that is probably bothering me the most:
We all know that LTE is the future for cell phone companies. But will Sprint still continue to expand coverage of Wimax for those of us with Wimax phones? The speeds of Wimax 4g have been quite excellent in my experience and more than sufficient for everything that I would want to do on my phone. The problem is that it is not available enough places. If they have a commitment to continuing to expand coverage even as they roll out LTE coverage, I would be more reassured. Sprint 3g can be spotty. It is perfectly sufficient for internet browsing, but media streaming like youtube can be frustrating.
Thanks. I still love this phone but I wanted to see what you all thought of how it compares to the Galaxy Nexus and other new phones on the issues I mentioned.
I look forward to hearing your responses.

The screen is Super AMOLED non plus meaning its resolution is not true in the manner you are used to. Instead of having a Red Green and Blue sub pixel for each pixel counting to the resolution its usually a little more like having 1280 x 720 total sub pixels (varies by the design) It wont look as good as a true 1280 x 720 screen but its terrible either.

I hit average speeds of what your getting as well. Peaks of up to 15 Mbps but from what I hear verizons upload speeds on LTE are better than the 1.4 im getting. I too am worried that I will be stuck with a phone that if I move into a non 4G area will never see 4G till I get an LTE phone.

The Exynos processor is much better for gaming on the phone.
Just because theyre both 1.2ghz doesn't mean theyre the same.
You can see more of a page on a higher resolution screen of the same size. The sensor on the Nexus is better its just less megapixels.
The Nexus also has NFC.
Verizon is more expensive with a data cap. Im on Wifi 90% of my day so the only thing i need is coverage and a lighter bill so for ME sprint would be better.
As of right now. ICS breaks some apps and also has its own issues. Though it is supposed to be faster will you really notice the difference on an already buttery smooth phone with amazing battery life? If they can implement little things into gingerbread like how they did the rotation animation i'd be happy.

if you can get 4g you should be fine
10 MB is normal for me and for the last year I thought there was no 4g around where u live but a bout a month ago I going 4g in a ton of areas close to me
Who needs a 40 MB speed if you get capped to 2gb per month
If you wanted to switch December was the only good time cause you would have 4 gb for the same price

Started having doubts on my purchase.....

So, I've been reading so much on the charge and thunderbolt. With regards to the 4g and started feeling like I made the wrong choice. Well, i popped in the Verizon store to see these two phones and found the Charge felt very cheaply made. The Home buttons felt very "loose". Also did a small test with the speed and my dinc2 was barely slower than the 4g bolt on loading websites. I do like the feel of the bolt, as it's very similar to the Dinc2 screen and software. Long story short my after playing with all 3 phone, I feel very comfortable with my choice. The 4g as I saw it doesn't save much time at all with regard to web surfing. That could all change in time though lol.

me too...I really need wireless tether and netflix....only reason I got this phone to replace my inc1 was for the global since I'm out of the country often
I have to admit, I have not yet once doubted the purchase of the DINC2.
The TB didn't interest me because of some of the issues it had. I did briefly contemplate the Casio G'Zone (or whatever it's called). And I've sworn up and down there was no way in hell I'd ever buy another Samsung phone, so that left the Charge out. Plus, I don't need 4G. So the DINC2 just made sense.
Yeah, I paid full price for it the day after it was released, but after nearly six months of the instability and bugs of the Droid 2 Global, it was an investment well worth it to get a stable phone.
Love my Droid Incredible 2...with or without root.
The Charge buttons were ridiculous. Very big and felt like they could fall off. It might be because it was a demo. If thunderbolt didn't have all the issues, i would definitely want it. I feel better after going in and trying the other phones out, since buying the Dinc2 was a bit of a whim

I love my Dinc2 its my first smart phone and i'm in love with it. Although i am a little hesitant about not being on the 4g network. The things i'm reading about the TB Charge and Revo make me wanna stay with the Dinc2 plus it was 50$ cheaper and I didn't have the extra money at that time. Just afraid in the two years i'm contracted to it i'll regret not being able to use 4g.

One of the bigger reasons that I didn't go 4G/LTE is my concerns about reliability on that network still. 3G is still rock solid.
I guess I still don't understand why people need/want [email protected]/s over [email protected]/s? What do you do on your phone that would need anything over 2MB/s?

I could see it from a tethering perspective. Beyond that, everything I've bothered to stream has usually streamed just fine over 3G.

Good question. Tethering is an obvious answer, but with Verizon cracking down hard on tethering, I'm staying with 3G.
LTE is still very much in its infancy. I'd rather have better battery life.

The only reason I'd want 4G is for tethering. Still, I've tethered with my Eris and didn't feel like it was terrible speed. Using the internet on my I2 has been significantly better than my Eris simply because the device itself is faster. My roommate still has his Sprint Hero (equivalent to the Eris) and watching us browse websites shows completely night and day differences in experience. The 3G didn't slow me down on my Eris, the hardware did.
Verizon is going to have issues in some area's anyway. My area has some older switches and won't see 4G for quite some time, and it's the 2nd biggest city in Illinois. I'm opting for the Dinc2 as soon as the bootloader situation gets figured out. I'll hold off for a 2nd gen 4g chip that doesn't make the phone bulky and drain batteries to death.
I had a T-bolt and returned it after 14 days. It was fine in Mexico where I had limited data access, but as soon as I got to the US and it got within range of 3G or 4G, the battery drained far too quickly. I got 30+MB/s at one point (RDU airport, terminal A), but most places were in the 20+MB/s range, like Detroit and a couple of other places that I forget.
I returned it for an iPhone4, which is not a bad phone (aside from having to deal with Apple and the idiotic form/function design issues), and gets great battery life. After three weeks I got assigned to Bahrain support duty, so I eBay'd the iPhone for $515 picked up a Dinc2 as a global phone because I had a Dinc1 for a while and really liked it. So far it hasn't been bad. I did the temp-root/bloat-freeze to get rid of the most annoying stuff and loaded AWD Launcher to get the screen like I want it, as well as a Seidio 1750 battery for a bit more usage time.
I'd really like to have more ROM options like my Dinc1, and if I wasn't assigned to a global support role I'd probably go back to the Dinc1, but the Dinc2 is a decent phone.

4G Service Sucks....

Mine barely ever connects and then when it does, its like it doesn't know because no pages will load(connection error). Got my azz handed to me by Bionic yesterday. My coworker and I were out for happy hour and did a little speed test on 4g...yep he definitely got me.
I need some WIMAX tweaks immediately!!! LOL..but not really LOLing. Im serious
Verizon's network is better. (fact)
Sprint's phones are better. (fact, with minor opinion)
It's a hard choice, but Sprint's network is fantastic in Florida, so I can't really complain.

Sprint's 4G & 3G suck!
My 4g inside my house on first floor also sucks but verizon 4g also sucked at my house. In fact verizon dropped occasional calls and I needed to get a network extender. Sprint's network will get better but will probably need lte phone in the future to take advantage of it.
Try the wimax tweaks http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1265990&page=6
Basically lets wimax latch on to a weaker signal
im pretty sure its dependant on area. I have no issues with 3g. I get usually between 700kbps-1.3mbps. on 4g i usually get between 7-12mbps. Not too shabbby for a guy like me

Its one thing to try to fix this issue (via tweaks, etc) its another to whine.
Feel free to leave any carrier whose network is not performing to your standards.
I haven't even had the chance to experience 4G yet here in my area (not available yet). Still having to pay the $10 a month "premium"data fee though.
That's what truly sucks!

Yes, it sucks but the $10 premium is even for smartphones that do not have 4G.
Sprints 3g speeds have been pretty bad. Anyone I meet on other carriers have like 3mbps while mine has like 1mbps. One bar of 4g signal and I am at 3mbps, two or three bars and I am at 6mbps or more.
Sprint 4g works pretty well for me up and down the east coast anyway in major cities. I travel a lot and spend a lot of time in airports and hotels near airports. The only place I find Sprint to kind of suck is oddly New York.
I had T-mobile which worked most places but their service sucked for speed especially at my home, solid bars but only .4 Mbps with whereas I get 1 Mbps 3g and 8 Mbps 4G with Sprint. Almost as fast as my Comcast cable internet.
Anyway YMMV. Probably VZW is the "best" but their data plans suck with 2Gb limit and they're expensive as hell with poor customer service. Instead of complaining how about doing a little research, ask friends, and take advantage of the trial period and figuring out which works best for you in your area.

[Q] T-Mobile data speeds on HSPA for GSM Nexus

Hey everyone,
What kind of data speeds are you getting on HSPA+ with your Galaxy Nexus? For some reason mine won't hit more than 3mbps, even though my old G2 can. I know I've seen people hit much higher than that on their Nexii. At this point I'm wondering if there's problem with my phone or if I'm overreacting.
What have other people been seeing? Have your speeds been better or worse than your previous phone?
I had a G2 previously on T-Mobile, and my HSPA+ speeds are about 50%-75% faster overall on my GNexus (ie 5mbps/2mbps on G2, 8mbps/4mbps on GN).
There are huge threads on this already though, with people specificially reporting T-Mobile speeds in different areas.

Interesting... Sounds like I need to track down those threads and read up then. I just thought it was weird that I always seem to cap at 3.
I'm Galaxy Nexus has very unimpressive speeds on T-Mobile too.
Most of the time I'm around 2-3Mbps. Once in a while it does reach up to 6MBps, but that's more the exception. Most of the time it's no faster than my Vibrant 3G. Except the Galaxy Nexus also has latency about twice as high, about 150-200ms (when it's not getting 1600-1800ms from the 3G to H flip).
Here's the other thread on the subject. Seems we are not alone.

Just replace the _h with _4g
Here in NYC it looks like they finally uncapped the upload and 5.76mbps max theoretical is now the limit versus the old 1.8mbps.

Man, 2.5mbps in San Fran is abysmal compared to what I was getting when I was out there last October. I was pulling 8 down and 2 up consistently on my G2.
I flashed UGKL1 and the results are slightly better than XXKK6, but nothing noticeable (hit 3.04 instead of 3.00). At home I was hitting 1.5 to 2, where I could only pull down 0.5mbps in the past.
I also tried flashing XXKL1, which was beyond terrible (0.09mbps up, 0.04 down). I also tried UGKK7, which was also unusable pulling down only 0.40mbps and 0.20 up.
So, I'm back on UGKL1 for now. I'm going to bring my G2 to work tomorrow and see how it fairs as well.
Additionally, I'm using the same SIM card that came with my G2 in the Nexus; could that be a problem? I know for the G2 it was imperative that I upgraded since my old sim was 4 years old. Have things changed enough in the last year and a half that my SIM could be restricting this phone?
Connectivity for me with my Galaxy Nexus on T-Mobile is horrendous. I've looked at maps loading for at least 2 minutes or more. High ping, timing out. etc.
Anyone have a good radio update that works well for them? It's especially bad when moving. I don't have problems with my Galaxy S 4G or Galaxy S II (which is dual cell so the radio works a bit differently)

I'm disappointed with the 3G speeds I get on T-Mobile, my Galaxy Nexus gets even slightly slower results than my 18 month old Vibrant 3G on Speedtest.
But I just got T-Mobile's $30 a month plan with 5GB of data. Which sure beats the AT&T plan with 3GB of data for about $60 (including the employer discount). So I guess I'll tolerate the slower speeds for the lower price.

Not quite science.
On the left: Epic 4G Touch on Sprint 3G in Scottsdale, AZ. Google Music streaming a 6 ½ minute song On the right: Galaxy SII Skyrocket on AT&T LTE in Scottsdale, AZ. Google Music streaming a 48 minute party mix.
Note the length of the medium blue buffering bar on the song. The phone on the left buffered numerous times, the phone on the right did not and loaded the 48 minute track faster than the Sprint phone did the 6 ½ minute track.
After this we both played a Katy Perry video (tits) on the Youtube app in HQ, started at the same time. The phone one the right played through with no interruptions, while the phone on the left buffered many times. By the time the phone on the right was done, the phone on the left was not even halfway. Take a look at the signal bars, the phone on the left was getting 'better' reception.
Anyone know wh Sprint 3G data so slow? I was told that towers had been upgraded and fixed in my area.
I was sold this phone and my last one on the promise of 4G being in the Phoenix area in the near future. My guess is that with the trouble that Clear is having, and the switch to LTE that Sprint is making, that I will never get 4G that works on my phone.
If you know something I don't, please let me know!
When comparing 3g to LTE, of course it's going to seem slow.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA
Lte should outperform 3g any day of the week. 3g is bogged down at sprint. Supposedly there will be less traffic on 3g and better capability on the towers part when lte hits for sprint as you will have people moving to 4g to browse. Don't count on that for a while. Look into a perl change. Koreyhas a thread on how to.

Sprint EVDO 3g vs. AT&T HSPA(+) 3g would be a fairer comparison. Still not fair imo but still same generation technology. It's like trying to compare vhs(2g) vs dvd (3g). Different generation technology. Plus don't hold your breathe for Wimax. You might not make it.
The signal bars has nothing to do with 4g LTE or 3G speeds...
Seriously you knew lte was 10 times faster than (sprints) 3G & any other right? You didn't need these nice gentleman to tell you that. Riiiight bad sprint joke, now hop in 85' DeLorean & "do not post"!
I think it's fair to compare the carrier's abilities in each location. Getting the best of the carrier from each side. It's obviously a better choice to go with AT&T in OP's location, and I wouldn't blame him if he left.
For me, Sprint's speeds are outstanding and I'm not in a hurry to transfer to another carrier anytime soon.
cdma has a max theoretical speed of like 3.something Mbps, of course it's going to be slower.
What Overstew said. Yes, I do know it's not an equal comparison. What I was pointing out is how I've been conditioned to think that not being able to stream music without buffering, or watch a YouTube video without it stopping multiple times is normal. I didn't realize just how slow it was until I compared the two. My speeds are below usable for any premium data type activities.

Take the phones to 64st and Greenway and use the sprint 4g. You'll get equal results. I've used it at 7th street and bell and its great. You can't compare a Ferrari and a gremlin.

Comparing Sprint EVDO-A (3g) with a theo max of 3mbps to a ATT LTE (4g) with a usual speeds of 10-40 mbps.....
How much more rigged can this be?
Apple and oranges...
I don't think I'm anywhere close to the theoretical maximum. I remember 3G with my HTC Touch Pro to be faster than it is today. Seems to only get worse over time.
Yes, apples and oranges. Note the first line, "not quite science".

Are any of you in other cities able to stream a track from Google Music without it stopping to buffer multiple times? Watch a YouTube video without it stopping to buffer multiple times?

I rarely end up on 3G so the answer would be I have no issues. 3G varies from .5 to 2 Mbps around here and as often as I am flashing firmware and modems it definitely varies. Add on various locations of people with old cell phones without wimax things can get a bit slow.

You do realize when touch pro came out there were very few smart phones. And the number is over 100 million now ...sprints 3g was not being raped by millions of smart phones like now.... Most people use more data than minutes etc ... But you also realize sprint wasn't the only one to fall behind on network upgrades but it will get better network vision is coming and lte

Anyone out there getting fed up with sprint horrible

We have the latest smart phones but cant use to its fulk capabilities because network is horrible anyone else getting ready to leave sprint it makes me mad that i have full bars and i cant not use web
Im on my SG3
Seeing as I just came from T mobile it is amazing to see how drastically different the networks are. I will tell you that the LTE is pretty amazing (I live in Kansas City) the few times I have been able to get it so it gives me some confidence that it will catch up pretty soon.
I used to have tmobile and it was pretty crappy im in chicago and i hope this network issue speeds up cuz its getting annoying
Im on my SG3

You knew this before you bought the SIII. Fortunately for me, I do live in one of the launch cities for their LTE. While it is still spotty where I live, I am seeing the 3G boost. I guess it's a matter of where you live. If the 4G speeds i've gotten is an indication, where it has tested as high as 28 megs, a little more patience will go a long way.
I think he is one of those never happy customers.
Complained about TMobile, complains about sprint. IF he went to att he would find something to complain about them as well.
If your unhappy with it do something about it other then letting us know your not happy.
IF you need the number to Sprint let me know, i will google it for you..
Im on Sprint. I am patient enough to wait out the issues and am finally seeing some improvement..
Sprint has best price and best phone selection.
Been with Sprint for more then 8 years...I've had my issues but they aren't enough for me to complain about and I can do everything on my phone with their 3G service.

If you posted this from your phone, logged onto this forum and made a thread. Is that not using the full capacity of the service provider on your mobile device?
Most people here have been with sprint prior to coming to the S3 and we just deal with it mostly because of price and unlimited data. It's pretty well known that sprint doesn't have the best coverage (could change in the future) and if this is a deal breaker for anyone then that person should've researched more before signing on.

Sprint was goid when i got it about four years ago im just saying in Chicago is getting worst and worst lots of people i know are dropping sprint what kind of **** is it that i have full bar 3g and my web doesnt work
Im on my SG3
Once again, did you but know this before signing a contract?
If it's that terrible pay the etf and move on. Complaining isn't going to do a damn thing about it.
And I'm willing to bet your web works. But not in the way you want it to.

I get mad then I think about how verizon and AtT are so expensive and how tmobile also doesnt have unlimited data. Then I become happy and say Thank goodness im with sprint.
I agree with the op no need to flame him I did speed test in at&t stores and sprint and sprint is so far behind its crazy

Sounds like it may just be you then. Our else we'd see a ton more users in your area reporting they can't connect to the browser.
I agree Sprint service is subpar compared to other companies.
If you are unhappy go fight with Sprint and tell them to waive your etf she to no service at your house.

Just left sprint for Verizon. I had the s3 but got tired of sprint basically I had a 3g so I switched to Verizon got s3 that I can actually use 4g on

If you're near Chicago it may be an issue with the pending upgrade to LTE.
I just came to Sprint from Verizon because Verizon is too expensive and because they (and the handset manufacturers whose phones they sell) lock everything down so tightly. I really got fed up with them when they claimed that the OG Droid (which I owned) was not capable - from a hardware standpoint - of wireless tethering when my Droid was rooted and I was actually tethering. Sprint's coverage is currently not as good as Verizon, but it is cheaper, it is unlimited data, and I think it will be much better coverage when the upgrade to LTE is done and they "turn on the switch." Until the upgrade is done why don't you just quietly "ride out the storm."
That being said, I get 4G about 80% of the time and am getting about 15M up and 1.9M . Maybe you can look forward to that.
Sprint does do things as- backwards,
Sprint was the First with the Best 4G device available, the Evo 4G, but most customers never saw Wimax to take full advantage of the Evo's capabilities.
I didn't see Wimax until over a year later, and I was one of the fortunate ones
All the promises by Sprint regarding Wimax coming to your city soon, were emptier than a pot full of gold left in the middle of Times Square at High Noon.
Now we have LTE, well most really don't, at least for now.
I do hope that LTE is not rolled out like Wimax Never was.
Hey, I got my S3 without LTE availability yet. Was this a smart choice? Probably not. But I like the S3 if it begins to have the ability to make calls without constantly dropping them.
Hopefully the LF9 modem takes care of this.
Yet I digress.
As I said, Sprint's track record has been poor regarding rolling out Networks. I will be happy if LTE proves me wrong........

You do know that Sprint is currently in a total rebuild of the Chicago system with the Network Vision/LTE upgrade. According to S4GRU.com they are about 40% built, with an estimated deployment of September 2012. When they rebuild a market there are disruptions.
I, on the other hand am in a market not even scheduled for LTE yet.
